nine0005 Britain by the Numbers – 16: University salaries

The Times Higher Education (THE) weekly published detailed information on salaries at 128 UK universities (data for the 2006-2007 academic year from the Higher Education Statistics Agency). For all categories of employees (including rectors).

First – the most interesting average numbers .

The industry average salary (per annum) for teachers and researchers (full-time) in all categories is £41,128. Compared to the 2004-2005 school year (£36,535) this is an increase of 12.5%. nine0062 professors earn more than members of parliament (MPs – £61,820, although they still receive very generous additional payments) and lawyers (solicitors – £55,000) civil servants – £23,000). It should be borne in mind, however, that in universities more people than in some of the professions mentioned are near the upper limits of their salaries (the same professors are usually very respectable people. But respectable lawyers of the highest qualification receive much more). nine0005 The conclusion is this: after a long period when the salaries of British universities increased more slowly than in many other industries (and countries!), the situation has changed. Which, by the way, did not happen by itself: a couple of years ago, there was a serious nationwide confrontation between university trade unions and employers about the size of the salary increase. Things came to the real threat of a long strike during the summer exams, which threatened a significant part of the graduates to be left without diplomas. In the end, a compromise was found. Although employers still argue that the agreed level of salary increases (together with increased payments to pension funds) will lead many universities to a financial crisis in the coming years. nine0006

However, the average salaries are reminiscent of the notorious average temperature in a hospital. What is interesting about the published data: it gives a detailed breakdown for specific universities. It is curious that the “ranking” of universities by the average salary (for all categories of employees) differs significantly from the generally accepted ranking, which arranges universities in accordance with the success in their educational and scientific activities. I will give a few examples (I will refer to the rating from the Sunday Times). nine0006

  • The highest salaries in London Business School (average – £104,862, for professors – £163,028), but here the specifics of the top MBA school apply. At the top of the list are such creative universities as Royal College of Music (3rd place), Royal Academy of Music (4th place), Royal College of Arts (7th place).
  • Among the “ordinary” universities, high salaries, for example, in London School Of Economics (LSE – 3rd place in the regular ranking) – 5th place: average – £50,143; professors – £79.142, Senior Lecturers £49,236, Faculty £41,865, Research Fellows £32,577.
  • Let’s take another university from the top (rank 4 in the regular ranking) – Imperial College London . He is in 14th place in the table, salaries: on average – £43,942, for professors – £75,475, for senior teachers – £57,519, for teachers – £40,858, for researchers – £31,851. It is immediately obvious that there are many (as a percentage of the total number) young researchers and teachers working here, who receive relatively little. nine0064
  • 2nd place looks amazing (average salary – £57,173) Kingston University (77 in the regular rankings). Despite the fact that professors there are not paid that much (£55,665). But it pays a lot (£61,284) to “other grades” employees – who seem to be a significant category there (unlike other universities, where there are very few of them).
  • On the other hand, the leaders of the traditional rating Cambridge and Oxford on the average salary of employees are as much as 88 (£39,896) and 115 (£38,339) places (128 universities in total)! Despite the fact that the professors there are paid very well (respectively, £71,009 and £75,527). Oxford officials explained in the next issue of THE that – in addition to a large number of young people at an early stage of their careers – they also receive special incomes related to the specifics of the college system, so working at these universities, apparently, is not so bad as may appear from this table.
  • Well, I will give data on two “native” universities. nine0017 University of Warwick (7th place in the Sunday Times ranking) – in a decent 15th place in terms of average salary (£43,849, for professors – £71,085). And Bournemouth University , frankly, does not shine: 120th place (average – £ 37,602, for professors £ 58,934, for teachers – £ 34,399, for researchers – £ 21,736; data on a group of senior teachers and s. .s for some reason not given).
  • Another interesting point: average salary of female employees across the industry is 16% less than male counterparts. Women professors are also paid less (£62,261) than male professors (£75,503). But at Oxford, female professors get paid on average more (albeit not much) than male professors!
  • In conclusion, about the salaries of rectors (I remind you that they are called vice-chancellors here). According to the table published in THE (compiled in accordance with Times Higher Education – Grant Thornton survey of vice-chancellors annual salaries ) rectors’ salaries (150 listed by name) range from £348,000 (R.Sykes, head of Imperial College London) to £87,550 (A.MacLennan, Bell College). For other universities mentioned earlier: LSE Rector 14th (£238,000), Oxford 30th (£210,000), Cambridge 41st (£204,000), Warwick 48th (£198,926), Bournemouth 82nd (£174,000) ), Kingston – by 72 (£178,000). It would be interesting to know real incomes of the rectors of Russian universities (the same Sadovnichy), but I think that this secret is more secret than many state ones …

Rectors’ average salary is therefore £177,844 (including benefits) and up 8%. These salaries are many times higher than other leaders, say, vice-rectors, receive. When compared to the incomes of heads of large structures in the public sector, rectors earn quite well (for example, heads of “primary care trusts”, serving more than a million people, receive an average of £ 144,000). However, in the private sector CEOs of large structures earn more on average (£214,000 – this is without any remuneration packages, which can be very high). nine0006

It would be interesting to compare the earnings of academicians here and in the same Spain or France in the context of local and local cost of living.
