  “The Y is only too busy if you go at peak times (like every other gym in the world)! I went over at 2pm and had the weight room to myself. I was traveling through Joplin and wanted a place to work out. They offer a day pass for $10.
  The weight room has precor and cybex brand machines. All In good shape. They have a good compliment of free weights and racks also.
  Other than weights, there is an aerobic room with a slew of machines. A large indoor rubber track with four lanes circles the upstairs.
  Large indoor pool.
  Locker room is large and they will provide you with a lockable locker. Floor was a little littered with some trash but overall clean.

Janis Joplin – biography and work

Janis Joplin was the first lady of rock, but this fact is unlikely to become a trump card in the hands of feminists, like once the first woman astronaut or president. Her voice scratches the eardrums, but these abrasions remain there forever. In general, it is strange to talk about her in the past tense, because the virtual network is full of her portraits and biographies.

The Ugly Duckling

As legend has it, moiras, goddesses of Fate, weave the lace of human lives until the thread breaks. Life’s work

According to her younger sister Laura, Janice loved not only to draw, but also to sing since her childhood. Perhaps she inherited this gift from her mother, who had a good soprano, she even participated in amateur performances. However, Janice preferred to sing in seclusion, embarrassed by her aggressive classmates.

It wasn’t until she entered high school that Janice really took up music. There she made new friends, with whom she made very popular trips among young people along the border of Texas and Louisiana with numerous stops in nightclubs full of tobacco smoke and genuine blues. Earning money by singing in Texas country and western clubs, Janis saved up enough money to buy a bus to California. It cannot be said that, having left home and traveling in search of odd jobs, she immediately found many like-minded people. It was early 1960s, and very few people heard the word hippie. One day, Janis noticed Chet Helms, a future faithful friend and producer, and invited her to join the San Francisco band Big Brother And The Holding Company . Culturally, San Francisco was already a fairly advanced city by that time. And Janice, having joined the group, instantly decides to join the local hippie community. Big Brother, along with a new vocalist, made an impression on the management of Columbia Records, and at 19In 1967, their first album was released, which very quickly made its way to the top lines in the charts, and Janis Joplin acquired the status of a national celebrity.

During these years, she realized that acne on her face, a tendency to be overweight and other physical disabilities did not prevent her from being successful with males. But several years passed, and the singer finally decided to leave Big Brother. A new group Kozmic Blues appears, the sound of which is very different from the previous one. Kozmic Blues is cool in the States, but very warm in Europe. Janis Joplin’s failure to change her image

She thinks that the image of a groovy white blues singer burning on stage is too cheap for her. It seems that she is tired of the motto “If you want – do it”, with which she lived all these years. In her interviews, frustration and fatigue are increasingly slipping. Now she talks about the dangers of heroin for young people. But the audience is waiting for the same tension of ligaments and nerves, and this tone must be maintained. On October 4, 1970, the body of Janis Lyn Joplin was found in a Hollywood hotel. That evening, Janice decided to take another dose in order to successfully complete the job, but, unfortunately, her regular dealer was not in town, and she bought a dose from an unknown dealer, whose drug turned out to be several times stronger. She died at the age of 27 from a heroin overdose, and thus ended up in the infamous Club 27. Friends and colleagues unanimously refute the version of suicide, albeit unconscious. Shortly after the death of Janis Joplin Rolling Stone magazine dedicated a special issue to her memory. “She chose the best time to die. There are people who are able to live only on takeoff, and Janice was just such a rocket girl … If we assume that a person has the opportunity to paint the script of his life, then I would say that she got a good script, with the right ending, ” wrote Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia.

The news of the death of Janis Joplin was a terrible blow to everyone involved in the work on the record. The album was almost complete, and Rothschild found himself in a dilemma: complete the work himself, or publish the record as an unfinished document. Clive Davis gave the producer the final say. He ultimately decided to finish the album, dedicating this work to the memory of the singer. Nick Gravenites’ song “Buried Alive In The Blues”, to which Janis Joplin did not have time to record the vocal part, it was decided to include an instrumental track in the album.

As a child, in her native Texas, Janice did not feel much joy about being born into the world. Nature endowed her with a not too beautiful, to put it mildly, appearance. Classmates laughed at a plump, pimply teenager with unruly, eternally tangled hair. In 1963, she ran away from college after she “won” a local competition for the title of the ugliest person in the dorm.

Janice tried to avoid mirrors so she wouldn’t get upset. And already in high school I was looking for salvation from problems in alcohol. She also locked herself in her room, plucked her guitar strings, and listened to the greatest folk, jazz and blues artists of the 20th century endlessly. Ironically, her last day at college was the day of her first mini-triumph. Joplin hitchhiked to San Francisco and got a job as a singer at a nearby bar. She spent two years among the beatniks, ardent fighters against bourgeois morality. They were close to her, because back in Texas, Janice boldly opposed the oppression of blacks.

However, the feeling of loneliness and own uselessness did not go away. She tried drugs for the first time. Janice understood that she needed to return home, sort herself out and decide what to do next. Someone at the bar gave her money for a ticket. But I couldn’t find myself at home either. Joplin has become crowded in a provincial town. It was clear that if she did not return to San Francisco, she would completely lose herself. At the Monterey International Music Festival in 1967, the unknown Big Brother And The Holding Company made a splash. A completely different life began: success, the release of an album, two singles, constant performances, money, as well as drinking and drugs. Columbia Records soon entered the fray for the rights to the works of Big Brother And The Holding Company. The album Cheap Thrills was released, several songs from which soared to the top of the charts. Meanwhile, the band members began to notice that the public loves and singles out only Janice. The posters said “Janis Joplin & Co.” The halls chanted: “Janice, we love you!” Newspapers shouted about the phenomenon of a white singer with a “black” voice.

At the same time, Janice managed to avoid star disease, she said to herself: “What a star I am to you! After the concert, broken, I come to the dressing room, my hair is tousled, my clothes are stained, my underwear is torn. I have a terrible migraine, I can’t find a second shoe. Joplin created her own group, the Kozmic Blues Band, which began playing classic soul. Then Janice began to realize that she had serious problems with drugs: “I am a prisoner of my inner world, I don’t know what to do with it, I hate this feeling. I have already learned to make it work for me on stage, but in ordinary life it depresses me. This was also said by Janice’s predecessor, her favorite jazz singer Billie Holliday. In July 1969, Joplin received news of her friend Nancy, the same one from whom she had taken her husband away for some time.Nancy was pregnant for the second time when she died of an overdose. Janice threw all the drugs out of the house.

At the same time, Joplin fell madly in love with Seth Morgan. True, he was not interested in her work and never listened to her songs, but Janice did not care. meant something to her.
