Ivashchenko-Vasiliev – Song about dough
And it’s not that blood played directly Or lead hardened in her fingers, But she arches her eyebrow And laughs like a tomboy.
Smart as Gertrude Stein, And sung in jazz, like this verse. But we will not have common secrets with her – We will remain with our own.
I’ll get tired of drinking and take up my mind, University and career growth, And my voice on the phone, yawning at two, Will be playful and simple with her.
After all, her gaze is transparent like cognac And friendly, like a grenade launcher – So if something goes wrong, I’m afraid she won’t understand.
Yes, her features express the blues Or bossa nova when drunk; If I accidentally fall in love with her – It will be my fault.
I’m afraid not to catch it at all, What has weight and leaves a mark, And she, with an air defense searchlight Emits a stubborn light.
This light does not let you sleep, Does not allow itself to be justified in anything, But on the other hand, it aims directly at the essence With its brown-eyed beam.
Night of June 28-29, 2005.

Our little rock club. Whiskey: A Taste Story
Our little rock club
As you have already understood from the text of the book, the Scots cannot imagine themselves not only without whiskey, but also without music and poetry. Modern independent rock music is on the rise here. The development of young people’s creativity is helped by large festivals, including Belladrum, T In The Park, Rock Ness, Go North! Many of them are organized by the government agency of the Highlands and Islands (HAIL), which employs very few people, and I am friends with all of them. One festival is hosted by Steve Robertson, the other by Sean Arnold. We decided to illustrate the book with songs from new Scottish bands. You have already seen some of them live at the concerts of the Moscow festival of Scottish rock music GoMoscow! which we have been conducting with my friend-surveyor Sergey Melnikov since 2006. Others will be completely new to you. Songs and recordings courtesy of the Scottish cultural agency HAIL. Well, if we are to thank those who helped, special thanks to designer Ekaterina Bykova for navigation and Masha Maltseva for patience and sober support. Scottish motifs: fire, peat, water. 2009

14. The Now – Modern Day Shakespeare
15. Call To Mind – Running with Scissors
Theater Fall – electronic post-punk band from Inverness with catchy female vocals from a girl named Lauren. They wear sneakers and tight jeans and seem to be very concerned about style. Therefore, they boldly mix a punk guitar with pop electronic keys. The rest is pure rock and roll.
Our Lunar Activities was founded by Charles Clark (vocals/guitar) in 2005 and his drummer brother Kevin Clark. In addition to them, the band includes guitarist Derek Healey and charismatic bassist and vocalist James Reeves (aka DotJR). The group is based in Stornoway, Lewis Island. The band recorded their first album, most likely to be called Fire, in Los Angeles. The album was partially financed by Russian entrepreneurs. The album was produced by Mark Hoppus (Blink-182). The band’s world tour is slated for fall 2009..
Saltfishforty is a folk rock duo consisting of Douglas Montgomery (violin) and Brian Cromarty (guitar, mandolin, vocals) from the Orkney Islands, where they make two types of whiskey, in particular Highland Park, which they sing about on our album. In 2004 they were nominated for the BBC Scottish Traditional Music Awards. They constantly give concerts all over the world – from Texas to Spain and from Brittany (2008 Celtic Colors festival) to Norway.
The Sean Harrison Band is a group from the Isle of Lewis, where two distilleries once stood. They play a catchy mix of electro-acoustic rock, with bright catchy melodies. Sean gave his song for the Russian book from his debut album A Silent Ovation, which he recorded in 2008, just when he turned 21. He was helped by all the rock musicians of the island. He is currently working on the double album A Spectrum of Colors.
Queen Anne’s Revenge is a project by composers Findlay Napier and Nick Turner. Napier played in the Grantown band Back of the Moon and even won some awards as a rising star in traditional Scottish music. Nick Turner played R’n’B. After graduating from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music, Findlay was one of the finalists for the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2002 Award. Since then, he has organized a series of concerts as part of the festivals of Celtic culture and has played in the bands Back Of The Moon and The Bar Room Mountaineers. Now also Queen Anne’s Revenge.
32 Miles to Breakfast formed at the end of 2005 and quickly rose to the level of such clubs in their home Glasgow as King Tuts, Classic Grand and Barrowlands. Critics believe that they are not in danger of disappearing from the musical sky in just a couple of years – they have a great future.
The leader of The Side – Vinnie – managed to create a nice gang that easily mixes rock-pop and punk in one glass without ice. The quartet is always in demand on shows with the likes of Tim Burgess (The Charlatans), From The Jam, The Bootleg Beatles or The Complete Stone Roses.
28 The Jacks is an Inverness-based band formed by hard rockers and Jack Daniel’s whiskey lovers. Within two years, they reached the point of playing with the likes of The View, Glasvegas, The Courteeners, The Wallbirds, The Jyrojets and The Rifles. Their second EP – Vicious (May 2009) – was highly appreciated by the legendary rock heroes of the Ocean Color Scene.
Willie Campbell is a singer and songwriter from the Isle of Lewis. Member and founder of the Astrid, Our Small Capital groups. The Moscow public knows him well. I gave a song for Igor Maltsev’s book from his solo album Down By The Head, which he released in The Open Day Rotation. In 2007, Willy signed with American studio Big Loud Shirt from Nashville.
Iain Morrison is the former leader of the Crash My Model Car band, well known to the Moscow public as a participant in the Russian Scottish Music Festival. Few people know that he is not only a singer and guitarist, but also one of the best bagpipers in Scotland. He started his career on the Isle of Lewis, then moved to Glasgow. Now Ian is performing with a solo project. His songs are distinguished not only by deeply personal, sometimes surreal lyrics, but also by beautiful melodies, and performed live, they turn into energetic rock anthems.
Lowtide Revelry is a band with two vocalists – Steve Obern with his mighty growl and Michelle Davidson with her sweet but strong voice. Many in Britain believe that their duet will be more powerful than Cave and Minogue. In any case, with more decent vocal data. The band was formed in 2004 in Inverness and is now considered a strong representative of the folk-rock wing of Scottish independent music.
Findlay Napier and the Bar Room Mountaineers are a union of charismatic musicians, talented melodists and star performers. The result is melodious music, a collection of songs about the life of ordinary people in the city.
Shutter is a band that might be better to watch than to listen to. Because the guitar show from Matt Campbell and Pete Macdonald is unique in many ways because they have been playing together for a long time, combining melodicism and very heavy music. Sometimes it seems to the audience that the Shutter band is very good for a dance party. Therefore, their audience in Scotland is very wide.
The Now was formed in Inverness with former Jyrojets bassist Munro. It is believed that their riffs are close to Oasis/Stone Roses, and the vocals bring the audience back to the rock of the sixties. These guys are growing very fast, drawing inspiration from the songs of Bob Dylan and the Kings of Leon.
Call To Mind is a band from Inverness, a worthy successor to the work of such musicians as Elbow and Doves. Vocalist Martin Ross translates all this music into the category of “ambient” with his voice. The track on our CD – Running With Scissors – was a great success in the greenest place on the planet – the Iceland Airwaves Music festival.
Steve Robertson,
Igor Maltsev
Igor Maltsev – journalist and author of fiction books, translator of Jeremy Clarkson and producer of many British rock and roll bands, traveler and musician, long-term fighter of the Kommersant publishing house. On the pages of Kommersant-Weekend, he led the columns “Wine” and “Grandfather”, at the same time being the editor-in-chief of the magazine “Autopilot”. A lover of strong and low-alcohol drinks. Not even an amateur, but rather a professional. It can not only drink, but also talk about what exactly is worth drinking. He truly loves Scotland. Her music, history and, of course, whiskey. A desperate love of life and a cheerful hooligan, Igor Maltsev is very different from his colleagues in the shop. He writes harshly, sometimes even evil, but always bright and exciting.
