Summer Camp Activities at Home

If you’re considering forgoing expensive camps and planning for summer camp at home, here are some budget friendly activities, tips and easy ideas to get you started!

I know summer is supposed to be fun and fancy free, but don’t you ever feel completely overwhelmed at the thought of no schedule and having your kids at home with you 24/7?

I’ll be the first to admit it. I do.

Which is why it’s good to have a backup plan to the simple declaration, “This will be a great summer!”

And I don’t mean the backup plan of sending them away to a three month summer camp. (Although, there’s nothing wrong with that! It’s just not very budget-friendly.)

I’m talking about a do-it-yourself, at home summer camp!

Lucky for you I’ve found lots of ways for you to make your own summer camp at home! And best of all, these summer camp ideas leave plenty of time for kids to roam free, catch fireflies, get their toes muddy and run you ragged. (Note: this post contains affiliate links that may earn commission.)

DIY Summer Camp Tips

Below you’ll find all the idea but don’t forget these very important tips for making the most of your summer with the kids!

Pick a Theme

Do your kids love getting outdoors? Perhaps they love to build things or paint pictures. Choose an overarching theme for your camp. It could be superheroes, science, books… whatever interest your kids.

You have to stick to the theme every day. After all, a little variety goes a long way, but a summer camp theme will help with planning.

Alternatively, pick a different theme for each week or each day!

How Long is Camp?

Will you be away for the summer and only need one week of camp activities? Or do you want to have some form of camp activity every day for the whole summer?

What’s the Schedule?

You’ll also want to decide how many hours in the day you want to devote to summer camp at home. Is this going to be a morning, afternoon or all-day camp? Write out a rough schedule that includes every day activities like meals and quiet time and decide what times you’ll save for camp activities.

Be sure to factor in whether your diy camp will include field trips and how many activities you’ll want to schedule per day. You can have as few as one or as many as 5 activities.

Remember: a little flexibility in the schedule goes a long way towards curbing frustration!

Who Will Be Attending?

Is it just your family, or will you coordinate with others? The more people involved, the more complicated scheduling can become so be sure to be thoughtful in how you designate responsibilities and plan the budget.

The age of the children also matters! All of the ideas below can be adapted for mixed age groups. Note: click on the name of the camp to learn more.

10 Summer Camp at Home Ideas

DIY summer science camp for kids. A fellow blogger and I put together this at home camp. 8 weeks of fun, with 2 easy projects per week so you don’t feel you have to do a ton of planned activities to have fun.

Camp KiwiCo. This camp is a little more expensive than the rest on the list, but still totally cheap compared to sleep-away camp! Each day kids put together an amazing STEM-based or craft based educational kit. They’ll make impressive projects like bottle rockets, window gardens or a levitating lantern (how cool is that!).

The camp advertises itself as “5 days.” However, this could stretch to 5 weeks because each kit includes bonus projects, ideas for further experiments and reading. That makes this at home camp truly budget-friendly!

We’ve constructed and adored numerous KiwiCo. projects in the past and I highly recommend them.

DIY math camp: 6 weeks of budget friendly learning ideas. Megan of Coffee Cups and Crayons and I put together two mathematics-based activities each week. Ideas range from snack-engineering (and eating) to games to art projects.

Library summer challenge. If you want a library or book-themed summer camp week, this challenge is perfect! It is a relaxed plan for parents and families to learn about all the secrets your local library holds, plus how to get more FUN out of library trips. It even includes a scavenger hunt!

How to Hold a DIY Summer Camp at Home!

We made the decision many years ago that we would spend our summers together as a family, and make it fun and festive by planning our own DIY summer camp at home! Mainly it was because we didn’t want to have to adhere to a set schedule of having to get out of the house by a certain time each morning after a busy school year of early morning band and orchestra practices in addition to getting to the bus stop on time.

Do-It-Yourself Summer Camp from Power of Moms

* Scroll to the bottom to watch a TV interview offering a summary of this post.

After a lot of trial and error, we finally got summer right.

We always spend most of July doing family trips and family reunions but it used to be that June and August were either boring or stressful.

One year we tried just lounging at the pool and doing whatever came up. After a week or so, we were all pretty bored and frustrated and started scrambling for more playdates and day camps to join.  The next year,  I ran the kids around to a bunch of classes to keep them busy but I found all the classes to be mediocre at best and felt we were wasting our time and our money while stressing ourselves out with trying to get to certain places at certain times so much.  Then the following year, I actually conducted classes for the kids and all their friends. Doing our own tuition-based summer school with classes of 10-12 kids was SO fun but SO much work!

So the next summer, I decided NOT to take the kids to classes all over town and NOT to invite the whole neighborhood over for classes.  Instead, the kids and I came up with our own plan for the “Loosli Learning Adventures Camp” that lasted throughout June and the parts of July and August when we weren’t traveling.

Together, we brainstormed a list of things that would be good to do each day to keep our bodies and brains active and our house clean. Then we brainstormed a “bucket list” of fun activities we’d like to do together. We ended up with a good list of six “MUST-DO ACTIVITIES” that the kids agreed to complete individually each day (usually in the morning) and a list of ideas for exciting group activities (or “DAILY ADVENTURES”) that we’d chip away at (usually in the afternoon).

Our Loosli Learning Adventures Camp worked so well that we continued the same plan (with tweaks here and there) every summer until the kids got summer jobs when they were 16. And since I first wrote this post about our family summer camp back in 2009, thousands of families around the world have created their own family summer camps based on the simple but powerful ideas in this post.

Following are some details on how we did our Loosli Learning Adventures Camp every summer:

DAILY “MUST-DO” DAILY ACTIVITIES:

Each morning, we got up whenever we woke up (usually by around 7:30 or 8), had a leisurely breakfast that finished by around 8:30, and then did our individual activities for a couple hours until lunchtime (they did their stuff on their list and I got a couple hours of computer work done – with a few interruptions here and there – but they became quite self-directed after the first few days).

Here’s what we decided together would be on the kids’ required individual “must-do” daily activities list:

  • READING: Read for 20 minutes (some read for longer – that’s fine!)
  • WRITING: Write a page in your journal (write about whatever you want, write a story, write about what happened yesterday, or pick a writing idea from a list of writing prompts we’ve got; younger children can work on learning to write letters)
  • PHYSICAL EXERCISE: Do a physical activity (can be individual or do it as a group – ride bikes or scooters, play tag, go for a walk, play at the playground, jump rope, shoot hoops)
  • PRACTICING: Work towards one of your summer goals by practicing a skill for 20 minutes (piano, basketball, guitar, typing – each child has their short list of skills they want to develop)
  • HOME: Do a job from the job list (we have a list of 5-10 minute household jobs that need to be completed each week – i. e. dust the living room, weed one flower bed, vacuum the stairs, wipe down the kids’ bathroom sink)
  • EXTRA: From the approved list of ideas we brainstormed together, pick an extra activity to do on your own or with siblings. Examples: work on Spanish (we’re loving the simple on-line free program Coffee Break Spanish – 15 minute lessons), do online reading or math games, play a board game with siblings, do extra reading or writing, paint or draw, etc.

The kids and I created simple charts that could be printed out for each week where they had checklist of what they needed to do each day and then on Saturday, they got paid $.25 for each thing they’d accomplished that week (so they could make $1.50/day for doing their 6 things or $7.50/week for doing the 6 things each day for the 5 week days). As they got older, we increased the amounts since they needed a little more money to be motivated!

During June, we’d usually have the kids save money for a big family activity at the end of June that they chose (an amusement park, a family trip, etc – we’d have them pay a certain amount of the cost from the money they earned from their “must-do’s”).

Here are the kids working on their reading point:

My daughter felt like writing a book report for her writing point one day:

The kids don’t always look THIS happy when they do their “home” point – but mostly, the home point has resulted in a pretty clean house through painless 5-10 minute tasks for each kid each day:

Here’s one of the kids’ favorite activities – we did a group bike ride a couple times a week that counted for their physical point and their practice point for those who had summer goals centered on increasing their mountain biking skills.

DAILY ADVENTURES:

One of our readers sent in a great idea for having specified days for different things. We used her idea to group our long “bucket list” of brainstormed activities into categories for fun family activities each day after the kids finished their “must-do’s”:

  • Make-it Monday (building projects with K’nex and legos or the wood we have in the backyard for the kids to use in building forts, craft projects, art projects, a visit to the library to learn about artists and inventors and engineering – art and building and invention are big things in our family)
  • Take a trip Tuesday (the park, a museum, a bike ride, a field trip to a historic place, a factory tour, a picnic, a friend’s house…We often invited other kids or other families along)
  • Wet Wednesday (swim/go to a spash pad/play in the sprinklers, often with friends and neighbors)
  • Thinking Thursday (research something from our “wondering list” – a list of things we’re wondering about. Last summer we had a great time finding out how to make yogurt, how cars are made, where baby carrots come from and how monster trucks work thanks to YouTube, Wikipedia and library trips)
  • Friend Friday (everyone can have a friend over – nice to do it all at once and protect our family time during most of the rest of the week.  Plus we always have Family Movie Night on Fridays)

One “Take a Trip Tuesday” with friends – went to the “Spiral Jetty” in the Great Salt Lake

A “Thinking Thursday” activity – they wanted to know how bread was made so we went to a local bakery

a “Wet Wednesday” – simple sprinkler time

I love being my kids’ teacher.  I mean all moms are their kids’ teachers in many ways – but it’s great to do it in a little more formal way sometimes.  I so admire moms who home school.  While I don’t know if it would be the right thing for us long-term,  I feel like summer’s the perfect time set up a special sort of summer “home school” where I can teach my kids about things I really value and love while we really enjoy each other’s company.

About Saren Eyre Loosli

Saren adores her five energetic, adventurous kids (ages 13-18) but doesn’t totally adore the mess and busyness and bickering that that comes with them! She grew up all over the world, got her Bachelor’s degree at Wellesley College and did her Masters in Education at Harvard University (these days, the diplomas on her wall mostly serve as visual aids when she’s trying to convince her all-too-smart teenagers that she DOES know a thing or two!). She went on to design and implement enrichment programs for kids and training programs for teachers. But it was only after she finally found her wonderful husband, Jared, and had five children in five years, that her education and work experience began in earnest!

When she’s not trying to answer five – or six – different needs and questions at once, she works on this website (she’s Founder and Director of Power of Families).

She currently lives in Ogden, Utah and loves reading, hiking, and biking with her family (or by herself when possible!). She often struggles with balance but finds joy in being involved in many things that are meaningful to her.

MAOU “Secondary School No.

2″ – School camp

Summer holidays make up a significant part of children’s free time. This period is most favorable for the development of their creative potential, improvement of personal capabilities, familiarization with the values of culture, entry into the system of social relations, implementation of their own plans, satisfaction of individual interests.

Summer is a time for games, entertainment, freedom in choosing activities, relieving stress accumulated over the year, replenishing spent energy, restoring health. This is the period of free communication of children.
The organization of school health camps is one of the most interesting and important forms of work with schoolchildren in the summer. The camp performs a very important mission of healing and educating children.

Haven’t figured out how to organize your child’s summer vacation? Sign him up for a school camp.

Dear children and parents!

School day camp will resume its work

during the summer holidays (June-July 2021).

What is a school camp? How is it good for parents? And what attracts children? The answers to these questions may be of interest to those who first encountered the problem of “where to arrange your child for the summer holidays.”

Dear parents, if you have not yet bought a ticket to a children’s summer camp or have planned a joint family vacation, but there is still a little more than a month to work before the vacation, there is a fallback option. Arrange your child in a school camp. In recent years, the popularity of the school summer camp has increased significantly and there are reasons for this.

So, what is a school camp, and what advantages does it have?

School camp, as a rule, is organized on the basis of the school and involves a day stay. This is his first advantage! Your child spends the whole day under the supervision of caregivers in the atmosphere familiar to him, and returns home in the evening. Therefore, after a hard day’s work, you don’t have to rush to go to the camp to see your beloved son or daughter, pamper yourself with something tasty and at the same time control the work of the counselors.

Another plus is that the teachers who work in the school camp as educators know well the characteristics of your child’s character, his habits and interests. And the child, accordingly, knows the teachers, so he will not have to get used to new people. This is especially beneficial for those children who find it difficult to adapt to a new society.

Is your child of primary school age? Do not worry that he will overwork and remain in the school camp without daytime sleep. The camp program for children under 11 necessarily includes the so-called “Quiet Hour” or “Hour of Rest”. To do this, folding beds are installed in specially equipped rooms, which, by the way, you will have to bring yourself along with bedding!

By the way, a school camp is an ideal vacation option for children of primary school age and for those who are not independent enough. Often children refuse to go to camp. They are frightened by the fact that they will have to live in new conditions unfamiliar to them, and they will have to create comfort and cleanliness themselves. If your child is not used to making the bed in the morning, if he has not yet learned how to wash his things, then in a regular camp he will face numerous difficulties and receive a lot of negative emotions.

Undoubtedly, an important advantage of the school camp is the low cost of the ticket. It may vary depending on how many days your child stays at camp and what is included in the

program

What attracts children to the school camp?

Firstly, children like the school summer camp because it is close and you don’t have to go anywhere. For most children, it is quite difficult to leave for a long time far from home, as they begin to miss their parents, friends, personal belongings and hobbies that are familiar to them. According to statistics, this is the most common reason why children return home from summer camps before the end of the shift. When a child is relaxing at a school camp, he does not experience such stressful moments, because he knows that in the evening he will meet his parents and play on his favorite computer.

Secondly, those children who do not really like to change their surroundings like the school camp and feel more comfortable in a familiar team, since school teachers lead the shift at the school summer camp and there are many familiar guys in the squads. Staying in such a camp becomes comfortable and enjoyable.

And, of course, every child is attracted by the rich program of the school camp. Each shift at the school summer camp has its own theme, and all activities are held within the framework of this theme. For example: “Ecological change”, “Fairytale change”, “Historical change”, “Sports change”. Every day, children take part in theatrical performances, sports game competitions, creative competitions, attend thematic circles and sections. During the shift, visits to the museum, cinema, circus, amusement park, as well as field trips to enterprises or other cities are organized.

Note!

  • School summer camp is open to students aged 7 to 14, and sometimes up to 16 years old.
  • The school camp operates on a 5-day working week.
  • A medical certificate and a parent’s statement are required to attend the school camp.

When enrolling in a school camp, benefits are provided to orphans, children from large, incomplete, low-income families, disabled children and children whose parents work in the public sector.

Training consists of regular daily classes from 9.00 to 13.00 (+ 2 hours in the afternoon for the “pro” groups of grades 9 and 10), as well as afternoon competitions in subjects, consultations, circles, lectures and electives. The size of the study group is no more than 20 people.

In the “Archives” section, you can find materials from the LMS from 1993 to 2021. You can get acquainted with the opinions of the LMSh of its students and teachers, see photos taken at the school in the community of the social network vk.com LMSh Kirov. Useful information about the biological department of LMS is also available on the website bioturnir.ru.

Why is LMS needed?

The tasks of LMS include the development of the schoolchildren’s style of thinking characteristic of the science being studied, the improvement of their general and professional culture, preparation for scientific activity, the education of intelligence and decency. At the same time:

  • priority active forms of study ; in particular, on the mathematical and physical flows, students “get themselves” many necessary theoretical results through the solution of expediently selected and arranged problems;
  • a cult of serious study is being created in LMS (more precisely, work): studying poorly, not being able to solve problems is not prestigious here; a sense of professional community is cultivated ;
  • each teacher is at the same time an educator in his study group : inevitable in such conditions, close daily communication between teachers and students allows the latter to perceive the style of thinking and behavior of their teachers.

So they study here from morning to night?

There are a lot of students at LMS. But they know how to relax here. After every four school days – one day off. For those who wish, there are various clubs, electives and circles: musical, literary, film club and others; The club of intellectual games is very popular. A newspaper is published, competitions, quizzes, etc. are held. There are many sports activities, championships in football, volleyball, table tennis, etc. are held.

LMSH – only for geeks?

But where do you get 400 geeks from? Anyone who loves and knows how to solve mathematical, physical or chemical problems, set up physical and chemical experiments, study wildlife can get into LMS: you just need to love your subject and want to do it. And for the most “advanced” students there are special groups of “pros” led by the most experienced teachers.

Who teaches here?

LMS has a unique team of teachers, made up, on the one hand, of high-class professionals working with gifted students from various regions of Russia and Ukraine, and on the other hand, former students of LMS – students of Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University and other strong universities. In addition, interesting guests happen at LMSH.

How to enter LMSh?

Recruitment to LMS is competitive. For admission, it is necessary not later than the deadline set in the introductory work to declare your desire to study at LMS and send to the competition the solutions of the tasks of the introductory work on the chosen subject. Those who have the right to out-of-competition enrollment just need to send a completed application form (the grounds for out-of-competition admission are published along with the text of the introductory work).

ABOUT FLOWS

Mathematical flow

At the beginning of training, testing is carried out, according to the results of which (taking into account the “Olympic biography”) in all classes, except for the 6th, a group of “pros” with an increased level of education is allocated. It is possible that this year the selection to the “pro” groups will also be carried out with the help of additional homework sent out in June. Training is differentiated according to the degree of preparedness of students, but even in groups for beginners, its level is quite high. At the same time, education is at the forefront not facts, but ideas and methods of their application ;

At the end of the shift, all students participate in the oral final Olympiad, and then, after an intensive three-day preparation, they pass the final exam, which is traditionally called “test” in LMS.

Physical course

Introductory testing and (in grades 9 and 10) selection of “pro” groups are carried out in the same way as in the mathematical course. Half of the lessons are devoted to solving theoretical Olympiad problems, and half is devoted to solving experimental Olympiad problems. The topics of most classes correspond to the school curriculum, but along with this, for example, the dynamics of rotational motion are studied (9cl.), thermodynamics of condensed systems (10 cl.), etc. In addition to classes, electives are held, including “Mathematics for Physicists”, physical fights, and olympiads. Outside of school hours, individual consultations are held for those who wish. Upon graduation, the rating of students is calculated, those who want to increase it pass the test.

Chemical flow

The purpose of the training is to deepen and expand theoretical knowledge in chemistry, develop skills in experimental work and research skills. The training program provides for lectures, seminars and laboratory classes. In addition to group work, individual work is also carried out. For ninth-graders, courses are held in thermochemistry, electrochemistry, the structure of matter, and the theory of solutions. Separately, the course of solving problems in the studied sections is highlighted. For high school students, courses are held in organic, analytical, inorganic and colloidal chemistry, as well as physical methods for the study of substances. In the chemical workshop, the children acquire the ability to work with chemicals and equipment, plan and conduct a chemical experiment and chemical research. At the end of the course, all students will have to pass tests for all courses.

Biological flow

The purpose of training is to deepen and expand theoretical knowledge in biology, develop skills in research work, skills in working with biological objects in natural and laboratory conditions. The training program provides for lectures, practical, laboratory classes, excursions. In addition to group work, individual work is also carried out. For seventh-graders, it is planned to conduct theoretical and practical courses on plant morphology and invertebrate zoology, including elements of research work in nature. For eighth graders – courses on plant anatomy, vertebrate zoology. In laboratory classes, children learn to make sections of various plant organs, biological drawing, prepare temporary micropreparations, identify plants, analyze their morphological structure, mount a herbarium, and identify invertebrates and vertebrates. For high school students – courses in human anatomy and physiology, ecology, embryology, biochemistry, genetics, plant physiology, molecular biology, evolution.
