Child Care Options for Low Income Families
One of the most frustrating aspects of being a working citizen is not having the ability to afford childcare. The majority of day care facilities charge as much as $300 per week for each child. That amount is difficult for middle-class citizens to pay. Low-income families cannot fathom paying such an expense. Luckily, the government and the various states have developed programs that help low-income families get the childcare they deserve. The following is some information on those programs:
Extended Day Program
The extended day program can assist low-income working parents during the regular school year. Many school districts offer this program. The school keeps children before and after school hours for a small monthly fee. A parent can drop a child off as early as 7:00 a.m. and pick the child up as late as 6:00 p.m. This program is excellent for low-income workers with daytime weekday jobs. The cost is approximately $150 per month for before and after school. The weekly rate is approximately $37.50, which is extremely competitive.
The attendants participate in various activities with the children before and after school. They help the children with their homework so that the parents have less stress when they come home from work. They give the children a full breakfast in the morning program and a snack in the evening program. Parents can opt to pay for the morning program only, the evening program only, or both programs. The evening program is the more expensive of the two because it lasts so many hours after the school releases the children. The evening program is $100 while the morning program is $52.
The Child Care Assistance Program
CCAP is a special program that provides childcare assistance to certain low-income families. People who are collecting TANF are automatically eligible to receive this assistance. Teenage parents who are working on obtaining their educations are also eligible for CCAP. Those who are not collecting TANF can still qualify if they are pursuing education that will improve their work skills and job opportunities. Parents can apply for CCAP assistance with the Department of Children & Family Services. The financial guidelines for qualification are along the lines of a $3,000 per month income threshold for a four-person family. The applicant must have proof of income, social security cards, birth certificates, and immunization records for all children. Application processing can take up to 30 days.
Head Start
Head start is a program for children between the ages of three and five. The program provides childcare services and medical services to the children who qualify. It is funded by the Administration of Children’s Services. The Head Start program covers childcare from 7 a. m. to 5 p.m. Teachers work with the children to fine-tune their social and developmental skills. Those who are interested in the program may apply online. Applicants go on a waitlist until there is an available slot in the program. It is best for an interested person to complete an application as quickly as possible since the wait may be extended.
Child Care Voucher Program
The Child Care Voucher Program is in effect in many states throughout the United States. It provides a subsidy of up to 95 percent of childcare cost to low-income families. Subsidy recipients will choose an eligible provider from the list of licensed providers. They may also select a relative or an in-home provider. The Child Care Voucher Program covers the childcare from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Monday through Friday. This is known as the traditional childcare period. However, the program also covers non-traditional times for parents who work odd shifts. It covers nights, weekends, and evenings.
A wide variety of options is available for low-income childcare. Many stay-at-home moms also run small day care businesses in which they discount their services. There is a way to make working and taking care of your children affordable.

Together with my family, I lived in Egypt for about two and a half years, from the beginning of 2018 to the second half of 2020. I work at one of the enterprises near the city of Alexandria and lived there nearby in a small village outside the city. I would like to share my experience of living in Alexandria, which is not very familiar to tourists, and tell you what life there might look like for a remote worker.

Climate

Alexandria is not a very popular tourist destination compared to the resorts on the Red Sea. When it comes to life in Egypt, they usually talk about Hurghada or Sharm el-Sheikh, where there are Russian restaurants and signs in Russian on the streets. In my opinion, the climate in Alexandria is much more comfortable for many Europeans. Here the temperature is from +25 to +30 from April to November, and the remaining four months the temperature is from +15 to +20 and it often rains.
You can swim in the pool from the beginning of April until the beginning of November approximately, and in the sea from June to October. In general, Alexandria has a Mediterranean climate, only slightly warmer than Greece or Italy. The average daily temperature in Alexandria is 24.9 degrees, compared to 23.3 in Athens and 21.4 in Rome, for example.
To the west of Alexandria begins the North Shore resort, popular among Egyptians. It is very beautiful here and, unlike the Red Sea, there are no crowds of foreign tourists. There are many great free beaches, we always went to the free beach right next to the house.

In the two and a half years we lived in Alexandria, we had no security problems. No dangerous situations, robberies, encounters with pickpockets or broken glass in the car – nothing at all. In general, Alexandria is considered the most liberal city in Egypt, at least I heard it many times from the locals. Alexandria also has quite a large number of Coptic Christians and there are a number of churches in the city. I think that such a mixture of religions also contributes to a more open atmosphere in the city.
Education for children

Our children attended a British school in Alexandria, located in the same complex as the British Consulate. Education is entirely in English, the main teachers are British, and the assistants are Egyptians. In general, a very good school, we were very satisfied. Education in secondary school cost about 7,000 British pounds a year, in kindergarten 5,500 pounds a year. Our youngest son came to this school with almost no English, and after 2.5 years he already spoke English fluently. There are similar schools in the city with English and French as the language of instruction, which are much cheaper. It seems to me that the opportunity to send children to an inexpensive school in English is one of the pluses of Alexandria.
British School, Alexandria
The school had compulsory Arabic lessons several times a week. After a year and a half or two, our son could communicate with the driver in Arabic better than we did and knew a little the Arabic alphabet and numbers. Now he has almost forgotten everything, unfortunately, except for a few children’s songs. Overall, I think it was a great experience for him – getting to know another culture and language at an early age, understanding that people of a different faith or nationality can be best friends and are essentially no different from himself.
Once there was a funny moment when his best friend Mohammed asked his parents to buy him a cross after school. It turned out that he noticed that Ivan went to school with a cross and he wanted the same “toy” as a friend 🙂 We laughed a lot about this together with Muhammad’s parents. It then reminded me that we are all people first of all, what unites us much more than what separates us. Religion, language, nationality, all this is secondary and there are no barriers for the boy Ivan and the boy Mohammed to be best friends.
Cost of living

I think this is an interesting and important point for everyone – how much does life cost in Alexandria?
Let’s start with the biggest expense item for most remote workers – real estate. We rented a fairly large house – three floors, four bedrooms, a swimming pool. Such a house cost approximately €1,250 per month:
In fact, it was even too big a house for us, and we could live comfortably in a smaller dwelling. After a couple of years, I got tired of controlling the gardener or the pool cleaner all the time, and would love to just live in a big condominium apartment with someone else doing it all.
For example, a three-room apartment of 100 square meters in such a condominium can now be rented for 500 euros per month. Most likely in the summer the price will rise during the season, but if you conclude an annual contract, the price will not be much higher than this.

We spent less than €1,000 per month on everything except rent, including all bills, shopping, frequent trips to restaurants and so on. Alexandria is a very cheap place to live. It’s probably the cheapest city we’ve ever lived in. You can go to a local restaurant for just a few euros per person. Fruits and vegetables are very cheap – I remember how we literally bought boxes of oranges for less than 50 euro cents per kilo.
At the same time, the advantageous difference between Alexandria and Hurghada is that you don’t feel like you are in a small village on the edge of the desert. Alexandria has good shopping centers, full-fledged cinemas, a promenade, historical monuments, a large selection of cafes and restaurants. This is a big city.

On the whole, with a budget of €1,500 in Alexandria, you can live very comfortably in a good condominium with a swimming pool and gym and nothing to deny yourself. This does not include the budget for the school, it all depends on the chosen educational institution and the number of children.
Pro tip: many places in Alexandria don’t have English menus, knowing the Arabic numerals will open up a world of really cheap cafes and restaurants for you!

Upon arrival in Egypt, you can get a visa for 30 days, which costs $25, right at the airport. After a month, it can be extended for another 30 days free of charge. After that, you need to apply for a visa extension by attaching a rental contract and, depending on the mood of the immigration officers, your visa will be extended for a few more months. In the end, you can get just such a card, indicating that you are a resident of Egypt and you will no longer have to pay $ 25 each time you arrive in Egypt.
In the event that for some reason you have overstayed your visa, you will simply need to pay a small fine at the airport during your next departure from Egypt. This fine has no consequences, you can pay it many times. Sometimes it is simply easier to pay a fine than to renew a visa. In two and a half years, I had a visa overstay three times, once for almost six months, and then I paid something around 60 euros in a fine per adult, children are not fined. This is the most liberal attitude towards a foreigner, if you are too lazy to get a visa, which is already given on the basis of a rental contract alone, then just pay a little and don’t worry.

I liked Alexandria because it combines a fairly large city with many amenities cuisine), a wide choice of entertainment and a wonderful climate that allows you to lead a beach lifestyle most of the year.
