Henderson County Public Schools

Henderson County Public Schools (also referred to as Henderson County Schools ) is a K–12 graded school district serving Henderson County, North Carolina. The district was formed in 1993 from the merger of Hendersonville City Schools and the former Henderson County Schools. As of the 2010-11 school year, 23 schools serve 13,472 students.

    History

    The system was created on July 1, 1993 by the merger of Hendersonville City Schools and Henderson County Schools. They adopted the new name Henderson County Public Schools. [2]

    Student Demographics

    In the 2016-17 school year, Henderson County Public Schools had a total of 13,521 students, 1,520 full-time teachers, 361 part-time teachers, and 1,155 substitutes. [3] In the same year, the student demographic of the total student population was as follows: Whites, 66.1%; Hispanics – 23.77%; Black, 4.09%; two or more races – 4.05%; American Indians – 0.16%; Asian – 1.27%; and Pacific Islander, 0.55%. [4] During the same academic year, 57.24% of [3] students received free and inexpensive meals. [5]

    Office

    The main governing body of Henderson County Public Schools is the Henderson County Board of Public Education. [6] This follows a council-governing government format with a seven-member Ministry of Education appointing a Superintendent to manage the day-to-day running of the system. The school system is currently located in the North Carolina State Board of Education’s Eighth District. [7]

    Ministry of Education

    The seven members of the Board of Education usually meet on the second Monday of each month. The current board members are Amy Lynn Holt (Chair), Rick R. Wood (Vice Chair), Michael Absher, Blair Craven, Mary Louise Korn, and Lisa Edwards. [6]

    Superintendent

    There have been five superintendents in the system since the merger. The first was Dan J. Lunsford, who also served as Superintendent of the County System prior to the merger. [2] He served from 1993 until 1999 when Tom Burnham was appointed. Burnham held this position from 1999 to 2004. [8] Stephen L. Page took over in 2004. [9] and served until 2010. David L. Jones was appointed in 2010 following Page’s retirement and served until 2016. The current District Superintendent as of July 1, 2016 is Hardy “Bo” Caldwell, who served under Jones as Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services. . [10]
