for the 2020-2021 school year. All Texas public school districts and campuses received the label “Not Rated: Declared State of Disaster.”
Our schools explorer shows the accountability ratings from the 2018-2019 school year when available.

      School Profile

From 1956 to 1962, DeSoto High School was located at 200 East Line Road Belt. In 1962, the new campus opened at 601 East Belt Line Road (now DeSoto East Junior High). As the county continued to grow, voters approved a $7.5 million bail by a vote of 445 to 366 in 19.73, which contained a provision for the construction of a new high school.

On February 15, 1974, the groundbreaking ceremony took place at the new site, 600 Eagle Drive. The construction contract was awarded to Central Texas Construction of Terrell at a cost of approximately $3,100,000. The school opened on August 16, 1976.

Adjacent to reduce crowding The Freshman Campus opened in 1997 to serve the area’s ninth graders.

In 2011 The Dallas Morning News reported that the school “had a lower-than-expected percentage of college readiness. [4] In 2011, the district built additions to improve school colleges and professional academies. [4] The State of Texas determines “college readiness” or university readiness by assessments of the ACT, SAT, and Grade 11 Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) tests.

DeSoto High offers International Baccalaureate, Early College and Academic Magnet programs to better meet the academic needs of its successful college students. [5]

      School Uniform

In the 2005-2006 school year, DeSoto ISD introduced a mandatory school uniform in all of its schools. Previously, the mandatory dress code was:

      • Shirt – yellow, green, black, white or grey.
      • Pants – khaki or black
      • On Fridays with jeans, you can wear a DeSoto shirt or student shirt.

DeSoto ISD changed policy in 2019 so students no longer need to wear uniforms.

      Student Demographics

In the 2014-2015 school year, DeSoto High had a total of 2,238 students in grades 10-12 (82% African American, 3% White, 14% Hispanic, 0. 2% Asian, and 0.2% Native American) .

In 2016, the varsity football team won the Division II 6A State Championship at AT&T Stadium. It was the first state football championship in school history. [10]

      Rivalry

For decades, DeSoto High has maintained a massive rivalry with its regional rival, the Cedar Hill High School Longhorns. The rivalry has been referred to as the “Battle of the Belt Line”. [11] DeSoto has an even longer rivalry with Duncanville High School. [12]

      Marching Band

The DeSoto Eagle Band is over 100 bands representing the school at sports games, group competitions, parades, and other events. [13]

      Student Research Award

In January 2005, the school district was investigated by the press for questionable hiring of an outside “gang consultant”. The investigation focused on whether there really was a “gang problem” in the area (the local police chief said it wasn’t) or if the consultant was creating a “problem” since the consultant should have been awarded a major contract if there was in fact a problem. The end result was that there was no real problem with the gang and the consultant’s contract was terminated.

A unique feature of the investigation was that none of the media in the Dallas area had anything to do with it. The investigation was conducted exclusively by Eagle Eye , the DHS student newspaper. For their roles in the story, four of the paper’s employees received the Courage in Student Journalism Award; The student advisor received the educator’s version of the award. Both awards were accompanied by $5,000 in prizes. [14]

Texas Gov. Rick Perry supported SpaceX founder and chief designer Elon Musk’s initiative to build the world’s first private spaceport 17 miles northeast of Brownsville.

The authorities intend to invest about $15 million in the project, which will be used to create the infrastructure of the cosmodrome. In turn, the construction of the spaceport will create more than 300 jobs and provide about $85 million to the state economy.

“This is a huge step forward for the future of our children, and our community is on a path to prosperity and awakening to life,” said Brownsville Commissioner Rose Gowen.

Perry and Musk, co-founders of PayPal and Tesla Motors, began discussing the possibility of building a SpaceX spaceport in the state back in the spring of 2011. The project was also supported by Brownsville Mayor Tony Martinez. The decision to build the facility was approved by the US Federal Aviation Administration.

Up to 12 launch vehicles per year are planned to be launched at the new site. The main customers of such launches will be private companies, as well as NASA. SpaceX currently launches its rockets from Cape Canaveral, Florida and Vandenberg Air Force Base in Santa Barbara County.

The FBI arrested on Monday Rowlett Texas resident Hong Minh Truong, suspected of mailing envelopes with suspicious white powder. Since 2008, the man has sent more than 500 such messages to schools, businesses and government agencies, as well as US embassies around the world, according to investigators.

In particular, 66-year-old Truong sent several letters to the office of the aerospace corporation Lockheed Martin in the Texas city of Grand Prairie. And in June 2013, messages were received immediately in 28 schools in Boston. Some letters began with the words “Al-Qaeda is back!”

According to CNN, a number of envelopes were addressed to President Barack Obama and members of Congress.

In addition, it was Truong who was most likely involved in sending letters with powder to hotels located near MetLife Stadium, which hosted the main sporting event of the year in February 2014 – the American Football Super Bowl game.

None of the letters contained toxic or poisonous substances. However, the receipt of messages caused panic, and in addition, the police and medical personnel were forced to come to the scene.

The FBI was involved in the investigation of this case. The next court hearing is scheduled for August 4. Until then, Truong will remain in custody.

Earlier this month, a court sentenced Texas resident former actress Shannon Richardson to 18 years in prison for making and sending letters containing the deadly poison ricin to Obama and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

A Texas landlord decided to sell a five-room apartment in Austin by posting, as is usually done in such cases, an ad on one of the real estate websites. But it looks like he made an unfortunate mistake.

In one of the photos of the interiors of a home valued at $389,500, he captured himself completely naked in a mirror image in the bathroom. According to The Daily News, it is likely that he did not plan it this way, and it was an accident that the man somehow did not see – well, for example, if he saw the resulting photos only from the phone.

In favor of the fact that it was an unplanned accident, says that the announcement soon disappeared from the site. But enthusiasts managed to save the retouched photo with the hero and made it into the public domain, perhaps as a warning to future sellers.

News commentators on The Daily News do not really believe that the photo is not staged, but someone advises a man not to despair and just post the resulting photo on a nudist housing resource.

On Saturday, July 26, the number of tourists rafting on the Guadalupe River on tires (tubes) exceeded the record! In order to break the previous record, included in the Guinness Book of Records, it was necessary to invite only more than 250 visitors. “We have thousands of people coming every weekend,” says Shane Wolf, manager of Rockin’ R River Rides in New Braunfels. – And one day we asked ourselves: “Why not have a party and try to break the record?” According to Shane, the result exceeded all expectations. So far, the exact number of visitors that day is being calculated, but about two thousand people came.

The event passed without incident. “Well, unless someone overheated a little in the sun,” Shane Wolf adds.

That’s the warning the Denton County Rangers, the Texas Game Wardens Association, addressed to Texas residents and tourists. And it’s not a joke! The fact is that alligators living in the reservoirs of Texas do not stick to citizens, but citizens should not stick to alligators, that is, avoid contact.
