What parents say about Westminster Preschool:

“Both our sons have gone through Westminster Preschool and we have nothing but good things to say about it! We love the teachers and the staff, and are thankful for a Christ-centered, safe place to send our kids to learn and explore new things. I definitely recommend it!” – Kristi

“Westminster has been wonderful for my son. They have early drop-off and late pick-up (both that I take advantage of). But past their hours; past their high state-regulated scoring; past the cleanliness; past the unique to each child, yet inclusive comprehensive developmental activities, is the staff. Every single staff person from the director to every teacher: is trustworthy, comfort, and dependable. One of the best decisions I have ever made was choosing Westminster as my son’s daycare and pre-school.” – Julie

“My daughter started here when she was 6 weeks old (she’s now 2) and we have loved every minute of our time at Westminster! The staff is always wonderful, and she has learned so much!” – Katie

University of Konstanz sets the tone – DW – 11.08.2011

11 August 2011

Combining family and studies is difficult. And students give birth to children with great apprehension. But at the University of Konstanz, the number of student couples with two or even three children is constantly increasing. What’s the secret?

Maria and Jörg, students at the University of Konstanz in southwestern Germany, got married a year and a half ago. Now the family has a new addition – the charming Adeline. The couple are happy: from the very beginning they dreamed of a child and are sure that they will not have to interrupt their studies because of their daughter. Moreover, at the university where they study, a large kindergarten will soon open.

Little Harvard on Lake Constance

Most families where the husband and wife are students have a lot of problems. Well, when a child appears, hands drop completely. There are more questions than answers: where and what to live on, how to combine family care and study? So student couples have children with great apprehension. At the University of Konstanz, the largest city on Lake Constance, the situation is different. The number of family students with children here is increasing every year.

“Founded in 1966, our university was conceived as a reform institution from the very beginning,” says Julia Wandt, Head of Communication and Marketing at University of Constanta. For a new concept of research that corresponds to the spirit of the times, the desire for innovative ideas in teaching, the university is even called “a small Harvard on Lake Constance”.

Family care as a brand

The University of Konstanz is distinguished not only by the fact that it is one of the elite universities in Germany, but also by the fact that it pays maximum attention to the daily problems of teachers, graduate students and students, creating optimal conditions for combining family with study and scientific work. Few German universities can boast of having their own kindergarten on its territory. And in the university campus of Constanta, a nursery has been operating since 1997.

“With the advent of the nursery, the number of undergraduate and postgraduate families with children began to grow so rapidly that it became necessary to create a large kindergarten,” explains Marion Woelki, an employee of the university, who heads the department of family affairs at the university. Judge for yourself: for 10,000 students and 2,000 employees of the university today there are more than 200 married couples with children.

Finishing touches

The kindergarten was designed by an architectural bureau from Salzburg. Everything is ready, it remains to apply the final touches. The notorious red ribbon will be cut in October.

Architects Georg Huber and Karl Meinhart are already adept at designing day care centres. They conceived their new “brainchild” as a rounded one-story building with a patio. The Kindergarten at the University of Konstanz is a complex of spacious playrooms, gyms and music rooms, craft and drawing rooms. Large windows let in plenty of daylight.

“But the main advantage of the new kindergarten is highly qualified teachers. We approached the selection of personnel very strictly. Moreover, we attached great importance not only to the availability of special education, but also to the individual qualities of a person,” adds Marion Wölki.

Saturdays and evenings

Every teacher at this kindergarten is also expected to be willing to work flexible hours, weekends and evenings. In special cases, parents have the right to invite the teacher home: if, say, the child is sick, and his mom and dad definitely need to attend a lecture or an exam. In such cases, one hour of the teacher’s work costs the parents 4-6 euros.

Well, how much do you have to pay for keeping a child in such a kindergarten? According to Marion Wolka, the amount of contributions will depend on the age of the child, on how many hours a day he will be in kindergarten. But, in principle, parents will pay no more than for an ordinary city kindergarten. The highest installment will be 320 euros per month.

Everything arrives

The kindergarten building was built with funds from the budget of the university and the federal state of Baden-Württemberg. And the work of this preschool institution will be financed from the treasury of the city of Konstanz, the Ministry of Education and Science of Baden-Württemberg, as well as through parental contributions. The university kindergarten is designed for 100 children aged from six months to six years. It is planned to create another 20 additional places – for children of school age. It will be something like an after-school group.

The University of Constanta does its best to attract talented scientists and students from all over the world. And the opening of a new kindergarten here is a great help. True, there are twice as many applications from parents to admit their children here as there are places. And it is possible that in the foreseeable future another kindergarten will appear here.
