4 External link there was only one high school in what is now the Southwest Urban School District. Six boards of education administered the individual school districts serving the area. The population grew rapidly and has continued to grow ever since. Schools were extremely forced to meet the needs.

Only the local county of Franklin had a financial base sufficient to meet growing needs. This situation arose due to the location of large industrial establishments in the years immediately preceding 1936, a committee of citizens representing six districts was formed and meetings were held with members of various boards of education, as well as district and state officials.

January 1, 1956 Southwest Local School District formed. It was an amalgamation of five local systems and one liberated village school system. These were the liberated village areas of Grove City and Jackson, Franklin Township Local, Prairie Township, Pleasant Township Local, Urbancrest Village, and Georgesville Local.

Consolidation was planned for: savings in operation; expediency to give adequate education to the children of the region; opportunities due to the newly consolidated school district’s larger financial base and the potential to support a quality school system.

Immediately after the creation of the new constituency, an additional transaction tax was requested from voters and approved. That same year, voters requested a bond issue to pay for the construction of additional school buildings, and they were approved.

The years from 1957 to 1960 were turbulent for the region. The population grew so that more than 1,000 new students entered the schools every year. This required huge financial outlays for additional buildings, hiring teachers to work in new classrooms, and providing proper services.

The county’s tax duplicate also grew rapidly during these years, which was fortunate as Ohio’s share of the county’s education funding dropped from nearly 40 percent at the start of the period to less than 30 percent of the required spending by the end of the period. During the same period, bond issues and taxes requested by voters were not approved time after time in the vote. Expenses skyrocketed as new students continued to attend district schools. As the area became more densely populated, in 19’58 Grove City changed from a village to a registered city. On August 19, 1959, the Southwest Neighborhood School Board took action as scheduled. in the law to change the status of the school system and the school district of the Southwest City.

By this time, public opinion had been so aroused by the apparent need for schools that a large tax on the operating school was approved, and shortly thereafter a bond was approved for the construction of additional buildings. From that point on, the city’s Southwestern School District began to gain a reputation as one of Ohio’s preeminent school districts. Over the next seven years, the district saw continuous improvements: kindergartens and special programs began, life-saving counseling and psychological services were added, and the Technical and Vocational Program was greatly expanded. The achievements of this period culminated in the construction of the Paul C. Hayes Technical Training Center.

Changes in laws governing government participation in school district funding led to financial hardship in 1968. During this time, cuts in staff and services created problems for the school district. Cuts continued in 1969 and 1970 as the government’s share of Southwest City’s school funding continued to decline. Voters turned down requests to approve additional transaction fees, even though school tax rates in the Southwest City School District have always been very low. comparison with other areas of Franklin County.

A major achievement of the district was the opening of two new high schools during the 1970-1971 school year: Westland High School and GroveCity High School. When the construction bills for the first four high schools closed, the projects completed were approximately 9$13,000 as part of the collective construction budget. In the summer of 2001, the Board of Education opened Jackson High School. Jackson High School replaced Park Street High School (formerly known as the Jackson Township/Grove City High School building). In line with district expectations, the project was completed with a construction budget of over $200,000, with more students per 100 students than originally planned.

The district’s fourth high school, Central Crossing, completed its first year of operation with freshmen, sophomores, and juniors only. In the spring of 2004, CentralCrossing High School had its first graduating class. The opening of the 272,000-square-foot school with a capacity of 1,800 students provided much-needed space at Franklin Heights, Grove City, and Westland high schools, which were critically overcrowded.

One of the unique community amenities provided at Central Crossing High School is the Central Crossing Southwest Public Library, which is available to the community when the school is not in attendance.

The Southwest Career Academy also opened in the fall of 2002. The full-service vocational/technical school serves the junior and senior high school students of the Southwest Urban District, offering them a wide range of traditional and non-traditional technical courses. Career Academy students have access to the latest programs and technology to help prepare them for a career or college. Southwest Career Academy is the nation’s first AAA sales and service office located at the school.

As a result of well-managed construction projects, taxpayers received one building more than expected. With savings generated from previous projects, combined with interest income from investments, the district had the resources to convert the Paul C. Hayes Technical School into an additional fifth school. and a sixth grade school, Hayes High School. In 2009, the district closed two of its buildings, Harrisburg Elementary School and Kingston School, as part of its cost containment strategy. Funding

SWCS has always had funding problems. Although they introduced a property tax school levy on their third attempt in May 2005, declining state funding, as well as other factors such as a spike in gas prices, forced the school district to cut more than $14 million after the levy passed. In November 2006, they tried to introduce another levy, a 1% income tax, but this failed. Fortunately, due to a relatively warm winter and a number of other things, they only had to cut the next year’s budget by just one million dollars. They decided not to attempt the May 2007 levy in the hope that the state budget, revised in the summer of 2007, would provide more funding. In November 2008, the district was again on the ballot for additional operating expenses and the Ohio State School Facilities Commission construction project, where the state offered the district almost $206 million in funds to settle the tobacco payment, and again this bond issue and fees were rejected , and the Ohio School Facilities Commission was again rejected. Grove is an unincorporated community in southeastern James City County in the Virginia Peninsula subregion of Virginia in the United States. The Grove occupies part of the narrowest part of James City County, bordered by the James River to the south and York County to the north. With the exception of the lowlands near the river, most of the Grove was originally covered in dense forests. Much of this remains.

Grove Creek and Skiffe’s Creek, tributaries of the James River, provide local drainage. The latter also represents the eastern boundary of the Grove (and county), which adjoins the Lee Hall area of the independent city of Newport News.

The former Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad (C&O) runs along the northern edge of the Grove. It is currently part of the Peninsula division of CSX Transportation.

Early history: 17th-19th centuries

Native Americans

Also: Powhatan

For millennia, various indigenous cultures have occupied territories along waterways. Prior to the arrival of Spanish and English settlers in the 16th and 17th centuries, they were semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers, although more complex civilizations arose in Mississippian culture. Scholars believe that a large historic American Indian village is located somewhere nearby, although the site has not been identified. A few miles to the north was the historic Kisciac Indian village, Chisciac. The Kiskiak were one of many historical Algonquian-speaking tribes at the time of the encounter with the British.

When English settlers founded Jamestown in 1607, the Powhatan High Chiefdom included most of the original tribes in the area. There were several people who were not affiliated. The paramount chief, known as Powhatan, built his powerful empire in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. He conquered or entered into an agreement with about 30 tribes, whose territory covered most of southeastern Virginia. It was called Tenakomaka . Capital of this confederation, Verovocomoco , was located near the north bank of the York River in present-day Gloucester County, about 15 miles (24 km) in a straight line from the Grove.

By the mid-17th century, the British forced the Native Americans who remained in the area to move to reservations north of the York River. Working and living together, some of them assimilated into the population of European colonists and freed slaves of African origin. Over the decades, white handmaids, African men and a few Indians married and created free mixed races before the American Revolution.

Martin’s Hundred, Wolstenholme Town

Initially, the English of the Virginia Company of London chose Jamestown for their first settlement in the Colony of Virginia. They arrived in 1607 in a fleet of three ships commanded by Christopher Newport. ( See main article Jamestown, Virginia ) After five difficult years, the new colony began to gradually expand. The settlers established plantations along the James River, mainly to grow non-native varieties of tobacco. This was introduced and successfully exported in 1612 by the colonist John Rolf who later married Pocahontas, daughter of Powhatan.

About 7 miles (11 km) downstream of Jamestown on the north bank of the river, east of Grove Creek, the Grove area was originally settled by English colonists in 1618 as part of Martin’s Hundred. The own plantation of over 20,000 acres (80 km ²) was the venture of Martin’s Hundred Society, a London-based investment group operating under the umbrella of the London-based Virginia Company. Not far from the waterfront, the new Wolstenholme Town, the administrative center of Martin’s Hundred, was founded.

Much of Wolstenholme Town’s population was killed in the Indian Massacre of 1622, one of the largest deaths by settlers in Virginia during the colonial years. The colonists rebuilt the settlement a few years later and protected it with a palisade built in 1634 across the peninsula to the west. They left Wolstenholme Town around 1643 after Williamsburg became the capital. The buildings fell into disrepair, and vegetation appeared on the site; he was lost before 1976 (see below).

Martin’s Hundred Parish Church was founded by the Church of England and served the area including Wolstenholme Town. It was later amalgamated with Yorkhampton County in neighboring York County.

Royal colony, creation of shires (counties)

When the Virginia Private Company lost its charter in 1624, Virginia became a royal colony. In 1634, the English crown created eight counties (i.e. shires) in the colony of Virginia, which then had a total population of about 5,000 inhabitants. James The city of the Shire, as well as the rivers James and Jamestown, took their name from King James I, father of the then King Charles I. Around 1642–1643, the name of James City County was changed to James City County.

Slavery, freedom

James City County received the first slaves imported by the British to Virginia. Beginning in 1619, the British brought Africans into the colony as indentured servants. Towards the end of the 17th century, they tightened the labor system to create a racial slavery caste for African laborers and their families. Dutch and British ships transported large numbers of slaves from Africa to the Virginia colony. On intensive labor tobacco plantations, planters replaced wage laborers with slaves who also filled the role of domestic and skilled laborers. In the late 17th and 18th centuries, economic conditions improved in England, so the number of wage laborers decreased.

Early Africans became free after serving their contract term. Some individual slaves were freed as early as the mid-17th century by emancipation. Some have earned their freedom by individual labor, while others have fled. By far the largest number of free African-American families in Virginia during colonial times were formed by marriages and unions between working-class white women and African men, whether indentured servants, slaves, or freemen. The children and their descendants were free because they had the status of a white mother under the partus sequitur ventrem principle, which Virginia passed into law in 1662.

Known as free blacks or free people of color, some of them stayed in the area. Others migrated to urban or frontier areas away from the plantations, where racial restrictions were more severe. Richmond, which was an economic center, and Petersburg, where there were industrial jobs, became the first centers of free blacks in Virginia.

During the American Civil War (1861-1865) there was a mass emancipation of slaves. Despite Virginia’s secession from the Union in 1861, the U.S. Army retained control of Fort Monroe on the eastern tip of the Virginia peninsula. It became a destination for slaves seeking freedom beyond Union lines. By 1863, many had heard President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation reading under the emancipation of the oak tree. This tree is now on the grounds of Hampton University, a historically black college founded shortly after the war.

After the war, many freedmen settled in the hinterland of the peninsula as landowners, tenant farmers or tenant farmers who worked as watermen. While the southern part of the peninsula along the James River has long been occupied by large plantations, the north side along the York River, west of Yorktown, has not been as heavily developed. Many freedmen moved into the area, establishing tight-knit communities in mixed towns as well as black-majority towns such as Lucky and Magruder.

Carter’s Grove

Carter’s Grove Mansion

More than 100 years after Wolstenholme Town was abandoned, Carter’s Grove Plantation was built on a piece of Martin’s Hundred land for Carter Burwell. He was the son of Elizabeth Carter Burwell and her husband Nathaniel Burwell. Carter Burwell was the grandson of wealthy planter Robert “King” Carter (of Lancaster County). He bequeathed the land before his death, requiring that it be called Carter’s Grove.

The new plantation house was completed in 1755. Since then, the Carter’s Grove mansion has been refurbished by several owners, with the last major change occurring in the late 1920s. The last private owner died around 1964. The plantation became the property of benefactors.

Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (CW) owned the plantation from 1969 until 2007. It is a furnished mansion in many parts of the period, mostly from the 19th and early 20th century. Some were antiques purchased in the 1920s at an auction at Westover Plantation, long home to descendants of William Byrd III. A landmark in the Grove community, Carter’s Grove Plantation has been opened to the public by the CW Foundation for tours and interpretation of the mansion and reconstructed slave quarters. Public access was discontinued in 2003.

In 1976, the Foundation conducted an archaeological survey of the area. Near the river, a team of explorers rediscovered the long-lost city of Wolstenholme Town. Renowned archaeologist Ivor Noel Hume has documented archaeological excavations that explored the site. The Foundation reconstructed part of Wolstenholme Towne and added it to the public tours and interpretations of the large plantation.

In 2003, the CW Foundation decided to focus on attractions closer to its Historic Precinct, near downtown Williamsburg. He closed public access to Carter’s Grove Plantation, which reduced tourist interest and income for the Grove community. Closer to the Historic Region, the CW Foundation has developed another site for interpreting the African American colonial experience in Virginia.

CW sold Carter’s Grove to private owners in 2007 with certain protective terms to help preserve the site’s nature. The Carters Grove Rural Road used to be a narrow one-way paved road into the Colonial Williamsburg Historic District. After it was damaged in Hurricane Isabel in late 2003, it was permanently closed to traffic. The main access to the plantation on U.S. Route 60 was opened shortly after the storm. The hotel has been closed to the public since 2003.

Location, early nature of the Grove community

The Grove Community is located about a mile from the coast and parallel to the waterfront adjacent to the large Carter’s Grove plantation. It was formed by freedmen after the Civil War and named after the nearby Grove Creek, which flows into the James River about 6 miles (9.7 km) east (downstream) of Jamestown. Grove Wharf at the confluence of Grove Creek and the river appears on some early maps of Virginia. Many freedmen probably continued to work on the plantation as tenants and laborers after the war. Under 19For 18 years, the Grove community was sparsely populated. Its inhabitants worked mainly as farmers and fishermen. According to the state atlas of 1895, the Grove had 37 people and its own post office. Today, it reaches approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) on U.S. Route 60, known locally as the “Pocahontas Trail”.

Grove station on the new C&O railroad

Near Grove station was established by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad (C&O) under the direction of Collis P. Huntington. In 1881, the C&O’s Peninsula Extension was built across the area from its previous eastern terminus at Richmond to reach the coal piers and the new town of Newport News at the southeastern tip of Warwick County. Although several local railway stations were built along the route, the main purpose of the railway was for coal transit traffic. This traffic pattern has continued into the 21st century under the CSX Transportation, the successor to the C&O.

Local stations have been established in James City County along the new railroad at Diaskund, Toano, Weiden Siding (Norway), Kelton (Lightfoot), Ewell, Williamsburg and Grove. While Grove Station was long gone by 2009, other former C&O rail stations to the east at Lee Hall and to the west at Williamsburg remain. The latter serves Amtrak’s intercity passenger rail service. Ewell’s former C&O station also survives adaptive reuse. Further to the west, a historic control and communications station built in 1908 for Norway. It was transferred in 2006 to the location of the slab branch of the Williamsburg Regional Library. Following the historic Norge surveys, the station was repainted in its original livery, featuring bright orange as its primary color.

20th century to introduce

In the first half of the 20th century, the Grove experienced two periods of rapid growth associated with military expansion during the world wars. It received African American residents displaced by the government’s acquisition of land for two large military reservations established by the US Navy in neighboring York County. With the compensation received, the new residents built new houses in the community with modern amenities, including electricity, running water and sidewalks.

Grove includes residential areas, churches, neighborhood retailers, a nursing home, day care centers, a state-of-the-art community center, and the Williamsburg-James County (WJC) Public Schools Magnet School.

Transfers from “Reservation” / Lucky.

Prior to World War I, many African Americans lived west of the present unincorporated town of Lucky, York County, where they (and their ancestors) bought land as freedmen or rented land on sharecropping terms and established homesteads, especially after the American Civil War. . Situated along the old Yorktown Williamsburg Road, this close-knit community was sometimes referred to informally as The Reservation, referred to as Lucky. After the Civil War, it was quickly settled by freedmen who wanted to create homes and institutions free from white oversight.

When the United States became involved in World War I in 1917, the US Navy decided to establish a supply and munitions base near Yorktown adjacent to the York River. Under an executive order from President Woodrow Wilson, the U.S. Navy occupied a significant piece of land to establish the necessary military base, originally known as a mine depot. Many houses were taken and three churches were moved. About 600 residents, mostly African Americans who worked as farmers and fishermen, were relocated to other parts of York County and nearby Williamsburg. Some crossed the York River and settled in Gloucester County. The largest part chose neighboring James City County, where a significant part moved to the Grove, which was located south of the territory of the fleet.

Notable among the area’s black population was John Tuck Roberts. Born into slavery around 1860, he was a farmer and self-taught. He “read the law” in an established firm (common practice for whites in that era) and became a Justice of the Peace. He was often referred to as “Judge Roberts”. Historians credit him with being instrumental in the growth of the Grove community. He helped some families displaced from the “reservation” receive financial compensation from the federal government. The Grove area is now part of what is called the Roberts Judicial District of James City County, possibly after Judge Roberts or other members of his family.

Camp Wallace

When the United States entered World War I, Abraham Eustis Camp was established in neighboring Warwick in 1918. It covered Mulberry Island and the adjacent mainland. A few miles upstream, also along the James River, an auxiliary facility, Camp Wallace, was established in 1918 as an Upper Ordnance Training Range. Camp Wallace was the first site of the Army Cable Car. In 1923 the camp became Fort Eustis. During World War II, when racial segregation laws were still in effect in Virginia, many blacks and other minority U. S. Army personnel stationed at Fort Eustis were prohibited from living in separate housing in the Grove area.

In 1971, the US Army agreed to a land swap with Anheuser-Busch in exchange for a larger site located directly across Skiff Creek from Fort Eustis (near the southeastern edge of the Greenmount Industrial Park). Along with the land sold by Colonial Williamsburg, the former Camp Wallace lands became part of a massive private development. Nearby is the theme park Busch Gardens Williamsburg, opened in 1975, as well as a large brewery and the Kingsmill Resort.

Highway

With the advent of the automobile as a common form of transportation at the beginning of the 20th century, the attention of the state and the country was directed to the improvement of roads. Because Grove was unincorporated and had a relatively small minority at a time when blacks were disenfranchised by the turn-of-the-century Virginia constitution and discriminatory voter registration practices, they were ineligible to vote when new highways were laid. In the 1920s, a new U.S. Route 60 was brought through the community from Williamsburg, displacing some homeowners and businesses. The construction was part of the Good Roads movement. It connected Skiff Creek, Warwick County and Leigh Hall. The state chose this route over the competing route through Halsted’s Point in York County (currently within US Naval Station Yorktown).

The east–west road that became US 60 was formerly State Route 9 . SR 9 was renamed State Route 39 in 1923. It became US 60 in the mid-1920s when the highway was built through Grove. Warwick County Treasurer and civic leader Simon Curtis held a ceremony at Lee Hall Depot in 1924 to celebrate the completion of the first paved (concrete) road between Newport News and Williamsburg.

Two-lane US 60 continues to form the main roadway through the Grove residential and district business districts. It runs parallel to the four-lane State Route 143 and Interstate 64.

Resettlements from Magruder

During World War II, the US Navy purchased property in another small town, Magruder, about 3 miles (4. 8 km) north of Williamsburg in York County, and hundreds of acres of surrounding land to establish a naval base US for Seabee training. The base was originally named Camp Allen and was later named Camp Peary. Like Grove, Lackey, and other post-Civil War small settlements in northern York County, Magruder’s residents were mostly African American. There were both landowners and tenants. The acquisition of property meant that the government also bought land from businesses and the church.

Residents migrated from Magruder mainly to the Grove. One community has moved to Mt. Gilead Baptist Church from Magruder to The Grove, where they built a new structure along US 60 in 1943. The church maintains cemeteries in its new and former locations. Although access to the base at Camp Pirie is highly restricted, families and other members of the church can obtain permission to enter and care for the old cemetery.

Magruder Avenue in the Grove was probably named after many of the new residents of the former town of Magruder during World War II.

A small but historic part of the northwest edge of the Grove is physically located in York County. It is listed in the Survey of Historic Resources for this county (as are the former sites of the “lost cities” of Lackey and Magruder).

Modern Times

The Grove community is made up of approximately 1,100 families that support many schools, churches, and retail businesses. It is located on a rural mail delivery route and has a Williamsburg, Virginia mailing address of 23185. This historic city is located approximately 5 miles (8.0 km) to the west.

Anheuser-Busch businesses and businesses are located between Williamsburg and the Grove, including the Williamsburg Company Brewery, Busch Gardens Williamsburg Theme Park, Office Park, and the Kingsmill Resort and Planned District. Grove has attracted industrial development related to regional business.

Residential

Grove is mostly a bedroom community. Housing in the Grove is generally considered more affordable than in many other areas of the fast-growing James City county. Many families have lived here for generations. The housing consists of older single-family detached houses located on lots, many dating from the two world wars’ rapid growth periods, as well as a number of newer houses. The latter are present both in the old quarters and in newer ones. Several major condominium projects and mobile home parks offer other options. The two larger mobile homes are equipped with modern amenities such as underground wiring, curbs and gutters, paved driveways, street lighting and community playgrounds.

As of 2007, residential development has continued with a new townhouse project and many new detached single family homes. While mobile home parks are not being expanded, in some cases owners are replacing units with new or much newer mobile homes on existing sites. The Grove has few vacant lots for additional mobile homes.

Public facilities

James River Elementary School and Abram Frink Community Center are located in a modern complex. This school is a magnet for the Williamsburg-James City (WJC) Public Schools, which offers the International Baccalaureate’s elementary education program, one of only five such schools in Virginia. There are five churches, two nursing homes, two kindergartens and a fire station. Grove Christian Outreach Center (GCOC) is an agency affiliated with Grove Community Church. Staffed by volunteers, GCOC helps meet family needs and coordinate community resources such as the local food bank.

Retail

East side of the Grove has a small shopping street, Windy Hill Shops, a gas store. A freestanding 7–11 store and campsite is on the north side of US 60.

Industrial

Near the eastern edge of the Grove, on the south side of US Route 60, in the James River Enterprise District Zone, is the Urban Enterprise Zone. The 5.6 square miles (15 km ²) area includes 2,400 acres (9.7 km ²) planned and zoned for industrial use. James City County is looking for additional industries in this prime area of the county. Lots in the designated “Enterprise Zone” offer state and local incentives for businesses to locate, invest, and create jobs in these zones.

Since the establishment of the James River Enterprise Zone in 1996, the James River Commerce Center and Greenmount Industrial Parks have added tenants such as Ball Manufacturing, an aluminum can manufacturing facility that supplies the Anheuser-Busch brewery in Williamsburg. The Wal-Mart distribution center and the Haynes furniture warehouse are also located there. Recently, a masonry supply company and a Volvo equipment rental company announced plans to build manufacturing capacity. Carter Machinery Company, a Caterpillar representative with 17 locations in Virginia and West Virginia, announced in May 2007 the construction of a new sales and service center on a 93000 m ² . Additional sites are available for development.

US Route 60 Relocation Project

For several years in the early 21st century, James City County worked to improve US Route 60 between Grove and Newport News. Officials wanted to improve access to Interstate 64 from industrial sites in the Grove, which generate a significant amount of truck traffic, and reduce it on the existing roadway.

Industrial access to I-64 requires driving approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) in either direction on two-lane sections of US 60 at non-highway speeds through residential areas. They must share the road with local transportation and school buses serving the James River Elementary School magnet program, or alternatively a large elementary school in the Lee Hall area of nearby Newport News.

In June 2007, the Virginia Commonwealth Transportation Board approved most of the funding needed for the US Highway 60 Relocation Project. The relocated divided highway will begin at its western end near the current intersection with Blow Flats Street. The new route will pass through the Greenmount Industrial Park to reach the city limits of Newport News. A new crossing over the Skiff Creek will be built there. The remainder of the roadway will continue on the new alignment and will effectively bypass the two-lane portion of U.S. Route 60 through the Leigh Hall Historic Community. It will join the current highway near the cloverleaf junction with Fort Eustis Boulevard, where there is four-lane access near Exit 250 of Interstate 64, as well as a preserved four-lane section of US 60. In separate projects, the portion of Warwick Boulevard east of Fort Eustis in Newport News expand to six lanes. Fort Eustis Boulevard was also widened to four lanes between Jefferson Avenue and U.S. Route 17 in Newport News and York County.

A similar road problem was previously discussed in the 1930s when the current parallel State Route 143 (Merrimack Trail) was built as part of a four-lane through route alternative to US 60 to increase east–west traffic in the area. . Once again, plans were made to preserve the two-lane, bucolic nature of Route 60 through the communities of Grove and Lee Hall, and to avoid the severe impact that would result from widening the road through these historic communities.

Public Transportation

There is little retail or tourist employment in the Grove, especially since the Carter Grove Plantation closed in 2003 Many residents use the Williamsburg Area Transit Authority (WATU) public bus system or complementary Paratransit services to cover employment, go shopping , as well as other businesses in nearby Busch Gardens Williamsburg, downtown Williamsburg and businesses along the way, or to transfer to other routes on the WATA network through a system hub at the Williamsburg Transportation Center. Amtrak, Greyhound Lines, and Trailways services, as well as taxis and car rentals, are also located in Williamsburg.

The Grove’s WATA bus route departs from the Williamsburg Transportation Center for an hour (and half an hour during peak hours on weekdays) and runs along U.S. Route 60 for the entire length of the Grove. It continues east to serve the Wal-Mart distribution center, Haynes furniture warehouse in the growing Green Mount Industrial Park, and provides an hourly, seven days a week connection to the massive Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) system on the western edge of Newport News. at Lee Hall. The WATA bus stops in an alley adjacent to the industrial park, returning to Williamsburg via the Grove, departing in half an hour (and an hour during peak hours on weekdays).

The HRT system covers most other Hampton Roads cities with extensive networks in the highly urban areas of Newport News, Hampton and Norfolk. Some of the more popular HRT routes trace their origins to street rail lines begun in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
