Day Care Centers Site
More and more in today’s world both parents have employment and need suitable day care centers for their children. These early stages in a child’s life are very important to their growth and development. Choosing a good child day care center is vital, one where the adult won’t just plunk your children down in front of a soap opera all day and feed them Top Ramen. You should look for day care centers that provide learning programs and playtime for your child, along with a safe and healthy environment.
There are many different types of day care centers, ranging from basic nurseries to preschools that will provide more of a learning environment for your children. Some day care centers specialize in a specific age range, while others are more open. When you’re contemplating placing your child in a specific day care center, you should visit each one with your child. In this way, you can see how your child reacts to the other children who are there and to the caregiver. You want your child to be happy and comfortable.
While some day care centers provide a greater variety of activities than others, any good day care center is going to encourage positive interaction among all of the children. They will also have rules that promote good behavior, learning, manners, and child development. You certainly don’t want to have to worry that your child is going to develop bad habits from day care.
Our Most Recent Additions to the Child Care Provider Directory |
---|
Wee Care Three809 Coldwater Rd |
While you don’t need to go overboard in choosing suitable day care centers, you should approach the subject seriously and with thought. Your child is going to be spending a good-sized portion of his or her life in day cares and you want to make sure it is going to be a positive experience. Family is the most important thing in the world and you should make sure that your children are your first priority.
When you are considering a day care center, you should look at where it is located and how much it costs. There’s not much sense in putting your son or daughter in daycare so that you can work full time and spending most of what you earn on the day care center’s tuitions and your travel expenses. If that’s the case, you might as well stay home with your child. However, if you do truly need the money, there are usually plenty of day care services available and it shouldn’t be too difficult to find one close by that is reasonably priced.
Different Kinds of Child day Care Centers
While child day care centers are common, there is such a huge demand for this service that there are now quite a variety of options available other than basic day care. These include the following:
- Home child care or family childcare
- Child care services
- Preschool
- Nursery
Home child care tends to be the most popular option because it is generally more affordable and a smaller environment. While some day care centers are quite large and can provide better early childhood education, it is also more difficult for each child to receive personal attention. Day care centers that are based out of someone’s home are usually more personal and your child can receive more care and nurturing. Most parents want their children to be receiving love and affection, the care that they themselves would give them. They don’t want a day care business that is merely going to make sure that their child is still alive and adequately healthy.
Home child care providers are also more adaptable, generally speaking. This means that if your child likes a certain song sung to them before they take their nap each day, the home care provider is more likely to be willing to do that than someone in a larger day care facility. Most adult home child care providers are parents themselves, making them better able to understand and love your child.
Other Things to Think About
One of the first steps you should take after picking out a family day care center that you think will be suitable for your child is do a little investigating. This can involve talking to the parents of the other children that use the child day care center to see what they think about it. You should also always check to make sure the child care service you are considering is legally licensed to operate in your state. Licensing officials check criminal records and ensure that the child care provider has emergency response training and a safe and healthy environment for the children.
As mentioned earlier, it is a good idea to visit the child day care center that you are considering. You should do this at least a couple of times, and try to go at different times of the day so that you can get a better idea of what kind of schedule they have. This will help you to see how your own child would fit in.
If you are having difficulties finding the appropriate child care environment for your son or daughter, there are some other options. Some people get family and friends to help out, while others hire a nanny. Adult nannies are a good option because they ensure that your child receives personal attention and quality child care. However, this also means that your child will not receive as much social interaction since he or she won’t have other children to play with like in a family day care center.
No matter what option you decide to go with, make sure that you know who you are leaving your child with. Meet them, get to know them, and let your child do the same. Do some research on the internet to make sure that no one has had negative experiences with the day care center you are considering. Check to make sure that they are legally licensed. Once you have done all of this, you can feel more confident and secure in knowing that you have chosen the right day care center for your child.
Switching Day Care Centers
Choosing Another Child Care Provider
So you want to switch day care providers for your kids but you don’t know where to start or what to choose among the plethora of options out there in this world. It is fittingly one of the most important decisions of a young parent’s journey due to the fact that a child’s first formative years up until the age of six is critical. It is important for parents to not just consider the monetary impact of these choices but also the emotional, intellectual, and social future impacts the choice of a day care provider will have on their kids in the long term future. So let’s discuss some general tips to consider for the parent and the child to consider when one is looking to switch day care providers within a short time frame.
First, you must consider the cost of attending some of the more prestigious and rigorous day care provider centers in your area. In some areas, let’s face the reality that the more money per month per child spent; the better the facilities and the educational value experience offered for your child. Things such as using smart boards and I Pad’s to enhance the learning experience is a very real possibility in these places. However, if a parent is budget conscious they can still afford this experience but it would mean cutting back on all or most non-necessity spending. This would include curbing your eating out habits as well as any leisure entertainment or travel activity and place that money instead into your child’s future day care home. If an expensive day care sees that you are making an effort to keep up with the payments; then they will be more willing to work with you and not let your child leave that place. For a child going to this environment, they need to consider whether or not they will fit into this environment, things like playtime, feeding time, and individual care of the staff- is it received well by the child? These will make the difference between choosing these ones or a cheaper alternative. Cheaper is not all bad if the quality and availability of care is there for your child in the first place.
Secondly, you need to consider your travel times and distance of day care relative to your work and other important places like the hospital, grocery store, bank, and places that you frequent on a daily basis. Is it near enough that you can get to your child should he/she become ill or need special attention so that the day care center can contact you and arrange a meeting with you the same day if needed.
Furthermore, you need to consider the overall cleanliness and friendliness of the day care center provider. Do not underestimate a clean environment for your kid to play and learn in with other kids. Your kid will enjoy making new friends in a clean and safe environment. Plus you as a parent will enjoy the peace of mind of knowing that your child will not be being home any unwanted germs and diseases into your house. Parents must also consider if there is a dispute over payment and care; how does the management and staff deal with such requests? If there is a lackadaisical approach to your core issues; then that is a bad prelude of things to come concerning your child’s care. Your child will probably feel like he/she is being neglected or not fed on time and will start to complain to you ever so slightly that something is not right. When they do, do not hesitate to take them out of that day care center and find another one immediately.
In a recessionary economy, it is okay and permissible for both parents and kids to demand the best care for their dollar. Make your day care dollar stretch by reading all of the material and brochures and visiting every day center on your list until you find that perfect fit for your child. It’s out there; it is just waiting on you to find it!
Child Care Options for Low Income Families
One of the most frustrating aspects of being a working citizen is not having the ability to afford childcare. The majority of day care facilities charge as much as $300 per week for each child. That amount is difficult for middle-class citizens to pay. Low-income families cannot fathom paying such an expense. Luckily, the government and the various states have developed programs that help low-income families get the childcare they deserve. The following is some information on those programs:
Extended Day Program
The extended day program can assist low-income working parents during the regular school year. Many school districts offer this program. The school keeps children before and after school hours for a small monthly fee. A parent can drop a child off as early as 7:00 a.m. and pick the child up as late as 6:00 p.m. This program is excellent for low-income workers with daytime weekday jobs. The cost is approximately $150 per month for before and after school. The weekly rate is approximately $37.50, which is extremely competitive.
The attendants participate in various activities with the children before and after school. They help the children with their homework so that the parents have less stress when they come home from work. They give the children a full breakfast in the morning program and a snack in the evening program. Parents can opt to pay for the morning program only, the evening program only, or both programs. The evening program is the more expensive of the two because it lasts so many hours after the school releases the children. The evening program is $100 while the morning program is $52.
The Child Care Assistance Program
CCAP is a special program that provides childcare assistance to certain low-income families. People who are collecting TANF are automatically eligible to receive this assistance. Teenage parents who are working on obtaining their educations are also eligible for CCAP. Those who are not collecting TANF can still qualify if they are pursuing education that will improve their work skills and job opportunities. Parents can apply for CCAP assistance with the Department of Children & Family Services. The financial guidelines for qualification are along the lines of a $3,000 per month income threshold for a four-person family. The applicant must have proof of income, social security cards, birth certificates, and immunization records for all children. Application processing can take up to 30 days.
Head Start
Head start is a program for children between the ages of three and five. The program provides childcare services and medical services to the children who qualify. It is funded by the Administration of Children’s Services. The Head Start program covers childcare from 7 a. m. to 5 p.m. Teachers work with the children to fine-tune their social and developmental skills. Those who are interested in the program may apply online. Applicants go on a waitlist until there is an available slot in the program. It is best for an interested person to complete an application as quickly as possible since the wait may be extended.
Child Care Voucher Program
The Child Care Voucher Program is in effect in many states throughout the United States. It provides a subsidy of up to 95 percent of childcare cost to low-income families. Subsidy recipients will choose an eligible provider from the list of licensed providers. They may also select a relative or an in-home provider. The Child Care Voucher Program covers the childcare from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Monday through Friday. This is known as the traditional childcare period. However, the program also covers non-traditional times for parents who work odd shifts. It covers nights, weekends, and evenings.
A wide variety of options is available for low-income childcare. Many stay-at-home moms also run small day care businesses in which they discount their services. There is a way to make working and taking care of your children affordable.

Our Story
Have fun with us!
Quality Pet Care
It’s a tale (tail?) as old as time: girl has crazy Wall Street job, gets married, has a kid and moves to the ‘burbs.
Girl goes through an insane divorce and wants to change her life. Enter doggie daycare.
What started as a simple marketing position in 2006 soon blossomed into a full general business management position, including learning dog behavior and training under master trainer Michael Gould, for the two original Hounds Town locations.
After working for Hounds Town in that capacity for 6 years, Marianne decided to take the plunge and buy the Port Jeff location on January 3, 2012. In June of 2021, Marianne opted to go independent and thanks to some creative naming friends, All Aboard was born.
Degrees and other fanfare include a BA from LeMoyne College and an Animal Behaviorist graduate degree from the University of Washington. She is an active member of the Port Jefferson Rotary, sits on the Women’s Advisory for the Town of Brookhaven and is a member of Decisions. We have won numerous “Best of” awards and boast having both a vet tech and vet assistant on staff.
The team is headed up by Kayla, also our groomer extraordinaire. Emily is our most senior canine wrangler and can be found working most any shift. Then we have Nick, our very own “dog whisperer”, who when not at All Aboard can be found hanging out with his own quad of four-leggers. We round it all out with Jennifer, Brianna, Lex, Aylin and Brendon! You may occasionally see our seasonal help Ben, Paul & Aaron depending on the time of year and how crazy we are!

All Aboard Lessons Overview:
Memory Verse:
“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. ’” John 14:6 (NIrV)
Lessons:
Ticket to Ride
Scripture: Matthew 9:9-13, The Calling of Matthew
In order to ride the train, you have to purchase a ticket. When Jesus invited the tax collector Matthew to ride along with Him, people thought it strange that Jesus would associate with someone so bad. Jesus doesn’t care what our past looks like: we are all invited to ride with Him. All we have to do is accept His free offer.
Objective: Kids will learn that Jesus welcomes us to follow Him, no matter our past.
One Way
Scripture: John 14:1-6, The Way, the Truth, the Life
Trains are designed to move in one direction. God sent his Son, Jesus, to be our one way to God. If we want to be with Him forever in Heaven, we need to ride with Jesus.
Objective: Kids will learn that Jesus is the one way to the Father.
Get Off at the Next Station
Scripture: Luke 18:18-23, The Rich Young Ruler
The rich young ruler was willing to follow Jesus to a certain point, but decided to stop when things got uncomfortable. In order to ride with Jesus, we must be willing to follow Him completely and not just “hop off” when things are difficult.
Objective: Kids will learn that we should be willing to give everything to follow Jesus.
Joy Ride
Scripture: Luke 19:1-10, Zacchaeus
Some trains are dirty and gross and not meant for fun. But some trains are just meant to be ridden for fun. Zacchaeus was an unhappy man. He was greedy and was not liked by his neighbors. But when Jesus came along and invited Zacchaeus to ride with him, Zacchaeus’ sadness turned to joy.
Objective: Kids will learn that following Jesus brings lasting joy.
Stay On Track
Scripture: Matthew 7:13-14, 24-29, Wide and Narrow Gates, Wise and Foolish Builders
We know exactly where a train is going because the train must follow the track. In our lives, it can be a lot harder to “stay on track” and know which way to go. But if we follow Jesus and build our lives on Him, we can have confidence that we are headed in the right direction.
Objective: Kids will learn that following Jesus means doing things God’s way.
Dining Car
Scripture: John 6:35-69, The Bread of Life
People gather in the dining car to enjoy a delicious meal during their train ride. When Jesus said, “I am the bread of life” many of the people who had gathered left because they did not understand. The disciples stayed because – even though they did not understand – they knew Jesus was the true Savior.
Objective: Kids will learn that just as we have to have food to eat, we have to have Jesus in our hearts to have eternal life.
Caboose
Scripture: Matthew 20:20-28, A Mother’s Request
The caboose is the car at the end of the train. In life, most people try to avoid being last. We want to be upfront and important. But Jesus showed us that we should live to put others first, before ourselves. Those of us who follow Him should follow his example.
Objective: Kids will learn that following Jesus means putting others first.
All Aboard
Scripture: Matthew 28:16-20, The Great Commission
Jesus came for everyone! He wants everyone to get on board with Him. Those of us who follow Jesus have a job to do: go out into the world and tell others the good news about Jesus.
Objective: Kids will learn that Jesus followers are called to go out and make more Jesus followers.

Soyuz MS-19 crew with film crew boarded the ISS – Russia |
The main events

© RIA Novosti. Ramil Sitdikov
October 5th. Interfax-Russia.ru – The crew of the Soyuz MS-19 manned spacecraft with the crew of the film “Challenge” boarded the International Space Station (ISS), Roscosmos is broadcasting the docking and transition.
After checking the tightness of the docking between the spacecraft and the ISS, the transfer hatch was opened, after which Roscosmos cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov, actress Yulia Peresild and director Klim Shipenko boarded the station.
The Soyuz MS-19 TPK landed at the Rassvet module at 15:22 Moscow time, starting at 11:55 from the Baikonur cosmodrome. Thus, the time of its flight to the ISS was 3 hours and 27 minutes. The flight lasted ten minutes longer than planned due to the failure of the automatic docking system. Cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov made the docking in manual mode.
On board the Soyuz MS-19 spacecraft, the film crew of the Challenge project – director Klim Shipenko, actress Yulia Peresild, and spacecraft commander cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov. They will be filming the first ever feature film in space.
According to Roskosmos, the crew will return to Earth on October 17th.
The film will be created jointly by the state corporation Roskosmos, Channel One and the Yellow, Black and White studio.
Earlier, the head of Roskosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, said that an American film crew led by film director Doug Liman discussed with the Russian side the possibility of filming the film in space. It was reported that Hollywood actor Tom Cruise was supposed to fly with the director.
On March 14, the head of the Glavkosmos company (part of Roscosmos) Dmitry Loskutov announced that the shooting of the film on the ISS would be financed by Channel One, and budget money would not be spent on them. According to him, part of the work will be financed by Glavkosmos, but at the expense of funds received from commercial activities.
In connection with the coronavirus pandemic, increased security measures were introduced in preparation for sending crews to the ISS. The cosmonauts and astronauts were almost completely isolated from others, the employees of ground services admitted to work with them were constantly monitored. In addition, part of the events was canceled, the participation of the media was limited, and press conferences of the crews were held online.
Earlier, the head of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency (FMBA) of Russia, Veronika Skvortsova, said that a special anti-epidemic regime was introduced at Roscosmos facilities, thanks to which “no infectious outbreaks were allowed during the period of the epidemic.”
Currently, the ISS crew consists of Roscosmos cosmonauts Oleg Novitsky, Pyotr Dubrov and NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hay, who arrived at the ISS on April 9 on the Soyuz MS-18 spacecraft, and also arrived at the ISS on the Crew Dragon-2 spacecraft On April 24, NASA astronauts Megan MacArthur and Shane Kimbrough, European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Thomas Pesce, and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Akihiko Hoshide.

Terrorism: how not to become a victim
Recently, a dangerous weapon has appeared in the hands of terrorists – sacrificial terrorism using suicide bombers. Participation in the sabotage-terrorist struggle of suicide bombers is intended not only to inflict maximum damage with a large number of victims, but also to create an atmosphere of panic, to sow uncertainty about the ability of the state to ensure the safety of its citizens. Methods of carrying out terrorist acts are extremely cruel, they are committed in crowded places with the use of explosive devices attached to the body and cars filled with explosives.
The primary task of a suicide bomber is to dissolve in the mass of people and not attract attention to himself. The Moscow events show that on the territory of the Russian Federation, as a rule, women are used by their organizers as suicide bombers-perpetrators of terrorist acts.
When committing a terrorist act, female suicide bombers dress in clothes typical for the area. Nevertheless, there are a number of characteristic features in their clothes and behavior.
Women have a headdress, while not only a traditional blind scarf is possible, but also light gas scarves, baseball caps. In the summer, the clothes of a suicide bomber do not match the weather: spacious, designed to hide an explosive device on the body.
Characteristic features of suicide bombers are:
• inadequate behavior;
• unnatural pallor;
• some inhibition of reactions and movements caused by a possible overdose of tranquilizers or narcotic substances;
• desire to avoid CCTV cameras (attempt to lower head, turn away, cover face with hand or handkerchief, hide behind taller person).
The terrorist usually carries a mobile phone with him to contact the leader in case of difficulties. Since terrorists, as a rule, are not residents of the capital, their characteristic features are uncertain orientation in the area, uncertain possession of a mobile phone, lack of skills in using cards for travel in the subway and land transport.
The nationality of the suicide bomber does not play a fundamental role for the organizers of terrorist actions. Meanwhile, an analysis of the latest manifestations of sacrificial terrorism on the territory of Russia shows a desire to use representatives of remote rural settlements in the southern regions of the country.
Be careful! If a suicide bomber senses the attention of others, he can detonate the explosive device immediately. Therefore, in order to protect yourself and those around you, try to remain calm and, without attracting the attention of a person who is suspicious of you, report him to administrative or law enforcement agencies or security services.

Hostage taking for ransom. What to do?
If someone close to you is taken as a hostage and some action is required as a condition for his release, first of all, make sure that he is alive and unharmed. It is unlikely that you will be given the opportunity to personally see the captured person, but it is simply necessary to talk to him on the phone. At the same time, the blackmailer should firmly state that you will not negotiate anything with him until you talk to the hostage.
While talking:
- First, make sure that the person on the other end of the wire is really the person in question. Telephone communication is imperfect, and it is not always possible to identify even a very close person by the voice, so in a conversation try to get information that will convince you that it is really him;
- secondly, conduct a conversation in such a way as to make sure that you are communicating with a living person, and not a tape recording;
- thirdly, try to calm the hostage by saying that you will do everything in your power to free him as quickly as possible;
- fourthly, ask if everything is in order with him, how he is being treated, whether they have caused any harm;
- fifthly, convince him that it would be better if he does not take any active steps so as not to aggravate the situation and not harm himself;
- sixth, in no case do not try even indirectly to find out who captured him and where he is. This kind of curiosity can be very costly.
After that, you can listen to the blackmailer and his conditions. Most likely, we will talk about a certain amount of money in rubles or foreign currency. Regardless of whether you have such an amount available or not, try to ask for a deferral of payment, motivating that there is no such money at hand at the moment (except for the situation when you are immediately told that this amount of money lies with you in the bottom drawer of your desk).
If the negotiations are in person, ask for a second meeting, if by phone – a call back. And during this time, you should quickly decide what to do: fulfill the conditions of the criminal without turning to anyone for help, or still resort to the help of law enforcement agencies or a private firm (keep in mind that at present not all firms that undertake the solution problems of this kind can really solve them).
As world experience shows, blackmailing gives a delay for a very short time, and if you decide to turn to professionals for help, you should do it right away, because in order to develop a plan of joint action and prepare a group specializing in the release of hostages, it is necessary for a while.
It is best to do this immediately, but by telephone, since the possibility of establishing surveillance of your movements from the moment of contact with the blackmailers should not be ruled out. Be prepared for the fact that when you call again, they can state with a confident voice that they absolutely know that you called the police and asked for help. In a personal meeting, such a question can also be asked, and here the matter is complicated by the fact that they only hear you on the phone, but they also see you in a personal meeting. You need to be psychologically prepared for such questions.
If the next telephone conversation with a person who has taken your loved one as a hostage will take place in the presence of law enforcement officers, try to discuss with them in advance the scheme and various options for talking with the criminal. This will eliminate the possibility of delays in answering questions, and there will be no suspicion on the other end of the wire that after each question you are getting advice from someone about what and how to answer.
It often happens that the blackmailer demands at any cost to speed up the exchange time. In this case, try, without losing self-control, to convince him that everything possible is being done, but due to circumstances beyond your control, you are not yet ready to give what is expected of you. Most importantly, do not forget to remind this person that you are much more interested in the successful outcome of the case than he is. You can justify the impossibility of obtaining the requested amount in such a time by saying that the person from whom you wanted to receive money is currently on a business trip and will return in a few days, but without even waiting for his return, you are trying to find this money through other channels. It is quite possible that the pause that you bargain for will make it possible to better prepare the operation to free the hostage, and increase the guarantee of his safety.
When you agree on where and at what time to bring what the extortioner demands, set the condition that this is possible only if you have guarantees that the hostage is not in danger. Either this will be an exchange, or before transferring the money, you will receive information that the hostage is already in a safe place at the moment.
Don’t be led by kidnappers in all matters. The firmer and more reasonable your position, the greater the chance of a favorable outcome.
Do not forget that as soon as you fulfill their demand, the hostage will no longer be needed by the attackers, it is possible that they will want to get rid of him as a dangerous witness, so the only right decision in such situations is to seek help from law enforcement agencies and strict adherence to the recommendations of their employees.
It should be clearly understood that attempts to hide something, play a “double game”, show unnecessary initiative, can significantly complicate or make it impossible to release a hostage, endanger both his life and your own.
Precautions in a situation where terrorists take hostages
Unfortunately, none of us is immune from a situation where we can be held hostage by terrorists. But still there are a few universal rules, following which you can avoid mistakes and save your life.
In a situation where there are signs of a threat of hostage-taking, try to avoid getting into their number. Leave the danger area immediately or hide. After hiding, wait for the terrorists to leave and leave the shelter as soon as possible and retire.
The exception is situations when you are in the field of view of terrorists or there is a high probability of meeting with them.
If you see an armed or suspicious group of people heading towards you, run immediately. If it was not possible to escape from the criminals, and you were taken hostage, try to remain calm and not show your fear. Do not offer resistance to terrorists, do not try to enter into conversation with them, do not seek to pity them or dissuade them from carrying out their plan. Fulfill their demands and do not react to their actions in relation to other hostages. You shouldn’t express your outrage. Do not violate the rules set by terrorists, so as not to provoke a deterioration in the conditions of your detention. You should not, for example, try to contact relatives or law enforcement agencies. This may be perceived by your captors as defiance.
When taking hostages, remember that only at the very moment of the capture there is a real opportunity to escape from the scene. If this was not possible, tune in psychologically that you will not be released immediately, but this will certainly happen.
If the operation to free you (assault) has begun, you must fall to the floor and cover your head with your hands; try to take a position away from windows and doorways. Stay away from terrorists because snipers can shoot at them during the operation. Explosions of walls, doors, windows, fire and smoke are also possible, therefore, it is necessary to determine for yourself the places of possible shelter from damaging elements, remove all synthetic clothing in advance, as it increases the likelihood of burns. It is also advisable to remove belts, straps from handbags and hide them in pockets – these items, if necessary, can be used as a hemostatic agent.
Do not take up arms in order not to be confused with terrorists. If an explosive device is planted next to you or directly on you, if possible, by voice or hand movement, let the intelligence officers know about this, who may approach you during a special operation. Record in memory all the events that accompany the capture. This information will be very important to law enforcement.
A person taken hostage at first cannot believe that this has happened and adequately assess the situation. As the analysis of the behavior of the hostages shows, some of them may have an uncontrollable reaction of protest against the violence committed. It is important not to lose your temper, as in this situation the terrorists often kill the rebels. Terrorists, as a rule, are in a state of extreme stress and therefore are extremely aggressive.
After the shock of the first hours of captivity, the hostages usually begin the process of adaptation – adaptation to absolutely abnormal conditions of existence. However, this is given at the price, first of all, of psychological traumas and disorders. The sharpness of sensations and experiences is quickly dulled, thus, the psyche protects itself. What revolted or led to despair is perceived as commonplace. At the same time, it is important not to lose the human face.
If possible, do not withdraw into yourself, try to look at other people, find out if someone needs help. Even a trifle – an understanding look, a word of support – will contribute to the fact that a contact will arise between you. If a person feels support, it becomes easier for him and everyone who is close to him. However, the hostages, as a rule, fail to avoid outbreaks of apathy and aggressiveness in their relations with each other. They are caused by a subconscious desire to relieve emotional overstrain, but this can further exacerbate the situation, provoke terrorists to aggressive actions.
A common misconception that people who are held hostage often fall into is the desire and attempts to “understand” the kidnappers and arouse sympathy in them. However, this is a harmful illusion. Terrorist sympathies can be your first step towards betrayal of other hostages. Do not think that the militants will perceive you somehow in a new way.
The constant threat to life and the awareness of one’s helplessness can lead to the development of other mental phenomena. It may seem that you hear the sounds of an assault that seems to have begun, the voices of absent people, you see something strange in the darkness. However, this is not a sign of insanity, but a disorder that will pass no later than two weeks after release.
One should not allow oneself to focus on experiences. There are many ways to get distracted: try to come up with some kind of game for yourself, remember half-forgotten poems, anecdotes, etc. For believers, prayer is a great help. It is very important not to forget about personal hygiene.
Being a hostage causes psychological trauma even to very resistant people. Those released are often burdened by feelings of guilt and shame, loss of self-respect, and various kinds of fears. Remember that this is a normal reaction for former hostages. It takes quite a long time to return to normal life.
Terrorism. How to recognize danger?
Most often, the fight against terror is a war without a front line. Terrorists can at any moment be among us under the guise of ordinary citizens. Are there signs by which it is possible to identify terrorists and their criminal intentions to prepare a terrorist act in order to take the necessary preventive measures?
The activities of terrorists are not always evident. But it may well seem suspicious and unusual. If signs of strange behavior are obvious, you must immediately report this to law enforcement agencies.
For criminal purposes, terrorists usually use typical factory-made and home-made explosives, ammunition, pyrotechnics, and other dangerous substances and mixtures capable of exploding under certain conditions.
Terrorists also actively use various improvised explosive devices: improvised booby traps; mines surprises imitating household items or things that attract attention.
Concealed under clothing and carry-on baggage is the most common way to bring terrorist items to the scene of a terrorist attack. Most often, this channel is used for the delivery of firearms. Firearms in assembled and disassembled form have well-known, quite specific and recognizable forms of units, parts and mechanisms. Explosive devices and radioactive substances can also be delivered under clothing and in hand luggage.
Carried explosive devices, both manufactured and improvised, can be camouflaged to look like household items. In practice, there were flashlights stuffed with explosives, hair dryers, fans, lamps, radios and tape recorders, electric shavers, coffee cans, canned food, thermoses, etc.
Be careful, try to remember the signs of criminals, the distinctive features of their faces, clothes, names, nicknames, possible scars and tattoos, speech and behavior patterns, etc.
Don’t try to stop them yourself – you could be the first victim.
Be extra vigilant and beware of people who are clearly out of season; if you see a person in summer wearing a raincoat or a thick jacket – be careful – terrorists most often hide bombs under such clothes; it is best to stay away from him and draw the attention of law enforcement officers to him;
Beware of people with large bags and suitcases, especially if they are in a place that is not suitable for such luggage (at the cinema or at a holiday).
Try to move as far as possible from those who behave inappropriately, nervously, frightened, looking around, checking something in their clothes or luggage.
If you cannot get away from a suspicious person, watch his facial expressions; experts say that a criminal preparing for a terrorist attack usually looks extremely concentrated, his lips are tightly compressed, or move slowly, as if reading a prayer.
Never pick up forgotten things: bags, mobile phones, wallets; do not accept any gifts from strangers, do not take things with a request to transfer to another person.
Actions in the event of a terrorist attack
Always be aware of the situation around you, especially when you are at transport facilities, cultural, entertainment, sports and shopping centers.
If you find forgotten things, without touching them, notify the driver, employees of the facility, security service, police. Do not try to look inside a suspicious package, box, or other object.
Do not pick up abandoned items, no matter how attractive they look.
Explosive devices (in beer cans, cell phones, etc.) can be camouflaged in them. Do not kick objects on the ground outside.
If the security forces and law enforcement agencies suddenly become active, do not show curiosity, go in the other direction, but do not run, so that you will not be mistaken for the enemy.
In the event of an explosion or shooting, immediately fall to the ground, preferably under cover (curb, market stall, car, etc.). For greater safety, cover your head with your hands.
If you accidentally learn about an impending terrorist attack, immediately report it to law enforcement agencies.
If you become aware of an impending or committed crime, immediately report it to the FSB or the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

50 years ago the first Salyut-1 orbital station was launched
On April 19, 1971, the first ever Salyut-1 orbital station was launched in the USSR. It was a new type of spacecraft, which allows automatically and with the participation of a person to solve various problems in long-term flight conditions. After the docking of the Soyuz-11 spacecraft on June 7, 1971, the crew consisting of Georgy Dobrovolsky, Vladislav Volkov and Viktor Patsaev moved to the station. The cosmonauts performed scientific work for more than 22 days, but died during their return to Earth due to depressurization of the descent vehicle.
In 1964 Vladimir Chelomey, general designer of rocket and space systems, proposed to the Soviet government the idea of an orbital manned station (OPS) that could stay in space for several years and was designed for a crew of two or three cosmonauts. Three years later, OKB-52, under the leadership of Chelomey, prepared a project for the Almaz OPS, which could perform both military and peaceful scientific tasks.
The main task of the station was to conduct space reconnaissance.
It consisted of four main parts: the aggregate compartment, the compartment with the telescope for observing the Earth, the working compartment and the return vehicle. Work on Almaz proceeded slowly, so in 1971 a simplified version was launched into space – the long-term orbital station Salyut-1 (DOS-1). It consisted of three compartments – aggregate, working and transitional, to which the Soyuz spacecraft docked.
The mass of the station was 18.6 tons (of which the weight of scientific equipment was 1. 5 tons), the length of the cylindrical part was 13.1 m, the maximum diameter barely exceeded 4 m. To provide the station with electricity, two sections of solar panels were attached to its body batteries with a span of 10 m and an area of 33 m².
Several buildings of orbital stations (OS) were transferred from OKB-52 Chelomey to OKB-1.
The purpose of the launch from the Baikonur cosmodrome was to test structural elements and on-board systems, to conduct scientific research and experiments in space flight.
On April 19, 1971, the Salyut-1 station was launched into orbit by the Proton-K launch vehicle with the following parameters: maximum distance from the Earth’s surface (at apogee) – 222 km, minimum distance from the Earth’s surface (at perigee) – 200 km, orbital period – 88.5 minutes, orbital inclination – 51.6 degrees.
“After 15 minutes of readiness, the State Commission and all the guests left the stuffy offices and went up to the observation post. On such a spring night with pleasure you inhale the air filled with steppe aromas. Pyatisotka (Proton-K launch vehicle – Gazeta.Ru ) is really beautiful in the spotlight when it stands at the start, freed from service towers and ground-based pre-launch fuss. Minute readiness! All at once the conversations ceased. I feel how everyone standing at the observation post tensed up internally. For seconds, the night steppe is flooded with dazzling light, and a deafening roar falls upon us. The Five Hundred takes off easily, eclipsing the stars with its bright torch. The first DOS is carried into space. At that time, we did not yet realize and could not foresee that with this launch we opened the era of orbital space stations,” recalled design scientist Boris Chertok in his book “Rockets and People”.
At the first stage, the flight was carried out in automatic mode. After separation of the orbital block of the station from the last stage of the carrier rocket, the solar panels automatically opened and took up the working position of the onboard radio systems antenna. On command from the Earth, the rotation of the orbital block, which began when it separated from the rocket, was suspended.
The Salyut-1 flight started not without problems. On April 19, the organizer and leader of the training of the first Soviet cosmonauts, Nikolai Kamanin, wrote in his diary: “According to the first reports, we were convinced of the successful launch of the station into orbit and the opening of its antennas and solar panels. However, at the end of the first orbit, it turned out that the lid of the scientific equipment compartment had not opened at the station. This defect excludes the possibility of carrying out a number of experiments, but it should not adversely affect the flight of the station, and therefore we decided to take the rocket to the launch site with a transport ship.”
The next day, April 20, Kamanin added: “The flight of the station is going on anxiously.” It turned out that six of the eight fans of the life support and thermal control system had failed. Nevertheless, it was decided to send the crew of the Soyuz-10 spacecraft to dock with DOS-1. It was planned that the astronauts would assess the situation on the spot and, after consultations with the Earth, decide what to do next.
The first attempt to create a long-term manned station in orbit was not successful. 24 April 19In 1971, an unsuccessful docking of Soyuz-10 with Salyut-1 took place: the cosmonauts could not go to the station due to damage to the docking port.
The ship returned to Earth, and DOS-1 continued its flight in automatic mode.
On the other hand, on June 7, 1971, the Soyuz-11 transport spacecraft successfully docked with Salyut-1, the crew of which, consisting of Georgy Dobrovolsky, Vladislav Volkov and Viktor Patsaev, moved to the premises of the scientific station. For the first time in history, astronauts were delivered aboard DOS-1.
The spacecraft docking process was carried out in two stages. At the first rendezvous between Soyuz-11 and Salyut-1 up to a distance of 100 meters was carried out in automatic control mode. Further approach was carried out by the ship’s crew. After mooring, a rigid mechanical docking of the vehicles and the connection of their electrical and hydraulic communications were carried out. Then the cosmonauts checked the tightness of the compartments and the operation of the onboard systems of the station, the parameters of the microclimate in the compartments of the docked vehicles, opened the covers of the airtight hatch connecting them, and through the passage entered the DOS-1 room.
The astronauts worked on it for more than 22 days and set a record for the duration of a human space flight.
The Salyut-1 flight engineer Volkov described his impressions of his stay at the station in his diary. So, in a message dated June 15, 1971, he noted among other things: “I am observing the Earth. Arabian Peninsula. A red, lifeless desert with visible traces of sand dunes. Sometimes some dark dots are visible, from which a train stretches. The European part of the mainland is immediately recognizable by the traces of aircraft, like white stripes running along the railroad track, as well as by the number of rivers and dense population. Almost the entire mainland is dotted with squares of different colors. America is beautiful with its night cities, which are very much scattered on the mainland. In the largest cities, even the highways of avenues are visible in the form of light strips intersecting in the center.
The crew performed a large amount of scientific, technical, biomedical, physical, astrophysical and other research. In addition, Dobrovolsky and Patsaev had to put out the first fire in OS history that had broken out in a manned pressurized compartment. The ignition of the power cables occurred in the presence of the astronauts, so it was not difficult for them to cope with the incident.
The initially successful expedition ended in tragedy. On June 29, 1971, undocking was carried out, and after the issuance of a braking impulse, Soyuz-11 began its descent from orbit. However, after the separation of the compartments, the descent vehicle was depressurized. Dobrovolsky, Volkov and Patsaev perished.
The flight of the Salyut-1 station gave the first experience in the creation and operation of heavy spacecraft, and made it possible to obtain useful data on the possibility of a long stay and work of man in space.
DOS-1 stayed in orbit for 175 days.
October 11, 1971 the station ceased to exist over the Pacific Ocean.
A total of five vehicles of this series were manufactured and put into orbit: Salyut-1, Salyut-3, Salyut-4, Salyut-6, Salyut-7. The Salyut-2 and Salyut-5 stations had a military purpose and belonged to the Almaz series of orbital stations. The Salyut program continued from 1971 to 1986, as a result of which a large experience of long-term presence of a person in outer space was accumulated.
Educational brainstorming – Education for a new era
A particularly interesting issue is the solution of creative, heuristic tasks in groups. Such tasks are usually called “open”, they most develop the “creativity” of thinking (in the West they use the term “creativity”). Therefore, we, dear reader, will not be too lazy to consider in detail the technology of educational brainstorming. (See Appendix 2 “About Creative Learning Problems” for details on what open-ended tasks are and “what they eat with”)
This promising form of learning activity is applicable to all ages. The author claims that there is no school subject on which brainstorming would be inappropriate. Unless, of course, the teacher is interested in developing the creative abilities of students.
A bit of history, or the legend of the torpedo
Nobody wants to be in a mess like the one that American Alex Osborne got into. Imagine: World War II, a caravan of cargo ships on the open ocean. And it just so happened that at some point they were left without protection. And suddenly a radio telegram: be careful – a German submarine is operating in your area. Alex – he was the captain of one of these ships – vividly imagined: here the periscope of the submarine is shown, and here is the torpedo, leaving small breakers behind it, rushing straight into the side. What to do? The task seemed to be unsolvable.
And then the captain remembered a practice used by medieval pirates in difficult situations. The whole crew lined up on the deck, and everyone, starting with the junior sailors, answered only one question: how to escape in a situation of a torpedo attack? You can say whatever comes to mind! – what if someone’s “wild” idea will serve as a key to solving the problem … For example, the cook gave the following idea: let’s all run out on board and at the same time blow on a torpedo. You look, and we’ll blow it off course – it will pass by …
They are lucky. The submarine did not appear. But after the war, Osborne remembered this incident and one day, in the company of friends, he decided to analyze the situation. I also remembered the chef’s suggestion. And calm analysis showed that the absurd idea of the cook led to the real solution! Of course, you can’t turn a torpedo with a “powerful blow”, no matter how you strain your cheeks. But on the other hand, it can be slowed down a little and knocked off course with a jet of a ship’s pump, which is on every ship. Of course, success is not guaranteed – but when life is at stake, it’s worth trying…
Why not use this way of finding new ideas in civilian life? In 1953, former captain Alex Osborne published the book Guided Imagination. It was with her that the popularization of brainstorming began in America, and then in other countries.
Educational brainstorming
We can talk about the classic brainstorming in its modern version for a long time. But we are interested in educational brainstorming (hereinafter – UMSH).
FORMULA:
creative task solution is organized in the form of educational brainstorming.
The development of a creative style of thinking is its main goal. We list the didactic values of UMSh :
- this is an active form of work, a good addition and counterbalance to reproductive forms of study;
- students train the ability to express their thoughts concisely and clearly;
- participants in the assault learn to listen and hear each other, which is especially facilitated by the teacher, encouraging those who seek to develop the proposals of their comrades;
- it is easy for a teacher to support a difficult student by paying attention to his idea;
- proven solutions often provide new approaches to the study of the topic;
- UMS is of great interest to students, it is easy to organize a business game on its basis (see the section “Business games”).
Technology
Usually the assault is carried out in groups of 7-9 students.
Before the assault:
1. The group is instructed before the assault. The main rule at the first stage of the assault is NO CRITIQUE!
In each group, a leader is selected or appointed by the teacher. He monitors the implementation of the rules of the assault, suggests the direction of the search for ideas. The facilitator can focus on one or another interesting idea so that the group does not lose sight of it and works on its development.
The group chooses a secretary to record emerging ideas (keywords, drawing, sign…).
2. An initial discussion and specification of the problem statement is underway.
3. The teacher determines the time for the first stage. Time, usually up to 20 minutes, it is desirable to fix on the board.
First stage. CREATING A BANK OF IDEAS
The main goal is to develop as many possible solutions as possible. Including those that at first glance seem “wild”. Sometimes it makes sense to abort a stage earlier if the ideas are obviously running out and the facilitator cannot correct the situation.
Now a short break in which you can discuss the assault from a reflexive position: what were the failures, whether violations of the rules were allowed and why …
The second stage. IDEAS ANALYSIS
All ideas expressed are considered critically by the group. At the same time, he adheres to the basic rule: in each idea it is desirable to find something useful, a rational grain, an opportunity to improve this idea or at least apply it in other conditions.
And again a short break.
Third stage. RESULTS PROCESSING
The group selects from 2 to 5 most interesting solutions and chooses a speaker who tells the class and teacher about them. (Variants are possible: for example, the group selects the most practical proposal and the most “wild”. ) In some cases, the goal of the group is to find as many solutions as possible, and then the speaker can announce all the ideas.
Recommendations:
1. The class can be divided into several groups. All groups can simultaneously, independently of each other, storm one task. Then you can arrange an idea contest. And let the jury also consist of students.
Example.
Propose science experiments aboard the Science Orbital Station. Experiments must be original and the results useful. If the same experiments are proposed by different groups, then the mark “for originality” is reduced.
2. Each of the groups can attack their task. It is better to unite all tasks with one, more general, problem.
Example.
a) Stairs, especially stone-cement stairs, are very dangerous in icy conditions. Suggest ideas to help reduce injuries.
b) Offer shoes that are not dangerous to walk in ice.
c) Ice is the cause of a huge number of car accidents. Suggest ways to reduce accidents.
3. There is nothing wrong with the third stage being separated by time, even in another lesson. If during this time the group members have new ideas, let them discuss them. After all, the main thing is to provoke intense mental activity on a learning task, and not to put forward a certain number of ideas in a strictly allotted time. And sometimes it is advisable to confine ourselves to only the first stage of the assault with the announcement of all the ideas found.
How to choose a task for UMS?
Brainstorming is guaranteed to be interesting if the problem has a large number of possible solutions. If this is a research task, for example, it is necessary to explain an incomprehensible phenomenon, then it should allow several possible explanation hypotheses.
Example.
For several years the world press has been writing about mysterious circles that mysteriously appeared in the wheat fields of Wiltshire, England. Within such a circle, the stems of cereals are for some reason bent and laid on the ground in a clockwise direction. Moreover, if at first just circles appeared, then they began to intertwine, making up intricate figures. Suggest hypotheses to explain this phenomenon. Which of the hypotheses do you think is the most true?
Here is an incomplete list of ideas developed by a group of high school students: uneven soil structure; uneven distribution of fertilizers; poison got into the soil; plant disease as a result of infection by microorganisms; flocks of birds land in rings; some animals, such as deer, trample crops in mating games; special meteorological phenomena such as mini-tornadoes or fireballs; jokes of students; the peasants themselves are slowly trampling down circles to attract onlookers from whom you can take money, etc.
Dialogue:
– Is it possible to turn on music during pauses that helps to relax from intense thinking?
— Of course.
– Listing the didactic values of the UMS, you said: “The proven solutions often provide new approaches to the study of the topic.” Explain this idea with an example.
— Please… The lesson “Germany and the USSR on the eve of the war”, history teacher O. V. Makarenko, suggests starting with the UMSh, where the children should make assumptions about the factors that led to the war. The teacher builds his lesson as an analysis of the developed hypotheses in a historical context. Another example: the analysis of the ideas received when solving the problem “How can Robinson lower a heavy boat to the sea?” made it possible to repeat a number of physical concepts and introduce students to new physical effects that they still had to study.
— How is UMS different from simple student work in groups?
– The fact that, as in “adult” brainstorming, the stage of generating ideas is separated from the stage of their analysis. Observe the basic rule of the first stage – no criticism! – very important. It allows you to unchain the initiative, remove the clamps. At the first stage, the facilitator should praise the participants for any, even “wild” at first glance, ideas. See for yourself that it’s not easy. You need to get used to it. We have been brought up in such a way that a “great critic” lives in each of us, and one wants to immediately discard other people’s ideas. UMS teaches patient attention to someone else’s thought. You know – this is a good property not only for study.
— Is it possible to conduct SSM to develop critical ideas?
– Yes! There is reverse brainstorming. Its essence is that the group tries to find as many flaws as possible in the solution, idea, hypothesis. Naturally, the shortcomings found are perceived as new tasks that can also be solved. Example: it is proposed to plug a hole in the ship’s side with an elastic sheath. The shell is inflated, and the flow stops. Find the disadvantages of this method.
– Will it not turn out that the guys will shout out, interrupt each other?
– It happens. This is how guys sometimes behave who have never worked collectively before. Yes, and with adults, at first, an interesting effect is observed: everyone thinks about his own, not hearing others. If such effects are observed, I recommend an “antidote”: the facilitator repeats his idea after each participant until he achieves a clear formulation and understanding, and only then the floor is given to the next participant. And let the facilitator remember to especially praise those who develop the ideas of previous participants. Teach facilitators and participants to name the authors of ideas. For example, in the following wording: “In addition to Serezha’s idea, I propose …” or “I want to develop Masha’s solution …” Another valuable note: each participant (if they are not kids) should have a sheet of paper and a pen at hand. An idea came up – immediately write down a keyword or make a drawing that will allow you not to lose it. The fact is that keeping your new idea in mind and listening to other suggestions is almost impossible.
– Is it possible to conduct UMS with the whole class at once as a single group?
Yes. Especially at the beginning, when students master this form of work. At the same time, it is important that the topic be “rich”, allow for many ideas and their variants. For example, I conducted immediately with the whole UMS class on the topic: “How can Roinson lower a heavy boat to the sea?” Eighth graders received 45 ideas in 20 minutes. By the way, he also performed the role of secretary himself – he recorded decisions on the board.
— What if the secretary doesn’t have time to write down ideas?
– Assign two, they will fix the solutions in turn – after one.
— What does the teacher do when the children work in groups without him?
— First, he observes to make his remarks later. Plays the role of a consultant to whom the facilitator and participants can turn for help or advice. And finally, he simply helps the less experienced presenters, throwing up a new direction for the conversation – if he sees that the brainstorming has “bogged down”.
— Are there any school subjects where UMS is inappropriate?
– Probably not. A little further we will look at exemplary UMS topics in various academic subjects.
– Where can I get tasks for the UMS?
— There are collections of creative tasks widely known to teachers. For example, a collection of P. Kapitza on physics or S. Smirnov on history. The TRIZ-CHANCE system also released several collections of creative tasks: in biology and ecology, from science fiction, fairy-tale tasks. It is planned to release other problems. A periodical collection of articles “Pedagogy + TRIZ” is published, in which new open problems are published. With some practice, it is not difficult to find topics within your subject on your own.
– Name TYPICAL ERRORS IN MASTERING UMSH .
– 1. The topic is poorly chosen – for example, it requires deep special knowledge or analytical reasoning.
2. When discussing solutions, the teacher accepts only the control answer to the problem known to him or harshly criticizes the proposals of the participants in the assault.
3. Regular intervention in the work of the group at work stages. Let the group make mistakes, violate the rules of the assault – this is inevitable when mastering a new form of activity. The teacher, on the other hand, will be able to say his comments during the “debriefing”.

History
According to all our ideas, an ancient man must be very strong and dexterous – these were the conditions for survival. But during the excavations, the skeleton of a one-armed man was discovered, who died under the collapsed arch of the cave. A study of the skeleton showed that the man was 50 years old at the time of death, and he lost his right arm as a teenager. How did this person survive? (UMS activates the already existing knowledge of students about the life of ancient people and provides rich food for further study of the topic).
