Nannies and babysitters share the same primary responsibility of providing safe and enriching care for your child, but there are a few differences between them. Nannies are more commonly associated with regular work, whether full or part-time, offering daily or consistent care to a particular family. There are also several different types of nannies, including au pairs, house managers, doulas, live-in, and overnight nannies.
Babysitters, on the other hand, are typically hired for irregular or occasional work, either full or part-time. If you’re looking for last-minute care for date night, or the occasional few hours after school, a babysitter is a great best option.
Identifying the type and frequency of child care you’ll need is the best way to decide whether a babysitter or nanny is a better fit for your family.

History of Clermont-Ferrand, France – City Guide
The history of Clermont-Ferrand dates back to time immemorial: Clermont-Ferrand is one of the oldest cities in France, the first mention of which was made by the ancient Greek geographer Strabo, who named it Nemessos ( Nemessos ) , which in Gaulish means sacred forest.
The settlement of the territory of present-day Clermont-Ferrand is evidenced as early as the Neolithic era, as evidenced by the erection of several menhirs (Brezet, Sainte-Anne, Puy-de-la-Poix) and the Puy-de-Cruel dolmen. The Cardiac culture (ancient Neolithic), typical of the south of France, but also present in the Auvergne and the Lyon region, is attested at the Brezet and Rue de Quatre Passport sites.
At the foot of the hill on which the ancient city will be built, there are also some signs of primitive settlements.
Roman era
The ancient Nemessos was located on the site where today stands the Cathedral of Clermont-Ferrand.
The settlement witnessed the famous battle of Gergovia, in which the Gauls, led by Vercingetorix, a native of these places, temporarily defeated the Romans, led by Julius Caesar. Vercingetorix led the united Gallic resistance to the Roman invasion, led by Julius Caesar.
After the Roman conquest, the city was renamed Augustonemetum (in the 1st century BC), which combined its original Gallic name with the name of Emperor Augustus. The forum of the Roman city is located on the top of the hill of Clermont, on the site of the current cathedral and Place Victoire. Its population in the 2nd century AD was estimated at 15,000–30,000 inhabitants, making it one of the largest cities in Roman Gaul. It then became Arvernis in the 3rd century, taking its name, like other Gallic cities of that era, from the people who lived within its walls.
The history of Clermont-Ferrand in the early Middle Ages
The town became a bishopric in the 5th century, during the time of Bishop Namatius or St. Namac, who built here the cathedral described by Gregory of Tours. Clermont experienced a dark period after the disappearance of the Roman Empire and throughout the High Middle Ages, marked by the depredations of peoples who invaded Gaul. Between 471 and 475 Auvergne was often the object of Visigothic expansion and the city was often besieged, including once by Eureka. Although the city was defended by Sidonius Apollinaris, who headed the diocese from 468 to 486, and the patrician Ecdicius, in 475 the city was transferred to the Visigoths by Emperor Julius Nepos and until 507 became part of the Visigothic kingdom, becoming part of the Kingdom of the Franks.
On November 8, 535, the first Council of Clermont was opened in Arvernis (Clermont), with the participation of fifteen bishops, including Caesarius of Arles, Nisier of Lyon, Bishop of Trier, and St. Hilary, Bishop of Mende. The council issued 16 resolutions. The second canon reaffirmed the principle that the conferring of episcopal dignity should be based on merit and not as a result of intrigue.
In 570, Bishop Avit ordered the Jews of the city, who numbered more than 500 people, to accept Christian baptism or expel them.
Birth of Clermont
In 848 the city was renamed Clermont, after the castle of Clarus Mons ( Clarus Mons ). Clairmont was an episcopal city ruled by its bishop and is known to be the starting point of the First Crusade launched to liberate Jerusalem from Muslim rule. Pope Urban II preached a crusade in 1095 at Clermont Cathedral.
Clermont-Ferrand was repeatedly attacked by the Vikings during the weakening of the Carolingian Empire. The city was ravaged by the Normans under Hastein or Hastingen in 862 and 864, and again in 898 year. After the devastation, Bishop Etienne II built a new Romanesque cathedral, which was consecrated in 946. It has been almost entirely replaced by the current Gothic Notre Dame cathedral, although the crypt survives and the towers were only replaced in the 19th century.
Birth of Montferrand
In 1120, after repeated crises between the counts of Auvergne and the bishops of Clermont and in order to counter the power of the clergy, the counts of Auvergne founded the city of Montferrand, modeled on the new bastide cities in southern France. Until the beginning of the New Age, these two cities remained separate cities: Clermont, an episcopal city; Montferrand – Count. In 1551, Clermont became a royal city, and in 1610, an inalienable property of the crown.
Birth of Clermont-Ferrand
On April 15, 1630, the Edict of Troyes (First Decree of the Union) forcibly united the two cities: Clermont and Montferrand. This union was confirmed in 1731 by Louis XV’s Second Edict of Union. At that time, Montferrand was nothing more than a satellite city of Clermont, which it remained until the early 20th century. Wanting to maintain independence, Montferrand made three demands for independence in 1789, 1848 and 1863.

The history of Clermont-Ferrand today
In the 20th century, the construction of the Michelin factories and city gardens that formed today’s Clermont-Ferrand united the two cities. However, these two separate centers have survived to this day, and the Montferrand quarter has retained a strong identity. Interest in it began to recover from the second half of the 20th century, its mansions began to be restored, and its development as a tourist attraction began.
