| NYFA Los Angeles Welcomes New Head of Cinematography – Tony Richmond

The New York Film Academy is pleased to announce its new Head of Cinematography – Tony Richmond.

Originally from London, Tony Richmond started working as a courier for the British Film Association at the age of 16, later at Pathe – News , where he was transferred to the camera department. Then he worked as an assistant cameraman in such famous films as: “ Call Me Bwana”, “From Russia with Love”, “Devil Pirate Ship”, “Gorgon”, “A Ridiculous Incident on the Way to the Forum”, “Fahrenheit 451” (director Truffaut) and “Doctor Zhivago” (director — David Lynn).

The award-winning cinematographer continued to work as director of photography with director Nicholas Roeg, making five of his films: “ Don’t Look Now” , where Richmond’s cinematography was awarded the prestigious BAFTA award, The Man Who Fell to Earth , Impatience of Feeling , Spirit of Darkness and Full Body Massage . Other films by Tony Richmond include Playground, Candyman, Stardust directed by Michael Apted, Playing God, Dirty Dancing : Havana Nights, The Good Guys directed by John Milius, Silver Bears (Ivan Passer), “ The Eagle Has Landed” (John Sturges), “ Greek Tycoon” (J. Lee Thompson). Tony Richmond was director of photography on Tony Goldwyn’s directorial debut Moonwalking , Indian Runaway (Sean Penn) and Anjelica Huston’s directorial debut Carolina Bastard . He later worked with her again on projects Agnes Brown and Trips with Sister .

Tony Richmond made videos for the most famous British bands in the late 60s. He filmed the Rolling Stones’ Sympathy For The Devil” for acclaimed director Jean-Luc Godard, after which he worked with director Michael Lindsay-Hogg in the film “ Rock and Roll Circus The Rolling Stones” “and directed the Beatles’ music video “ Let It Be” . Some of his other notable works are the Who’s video The Kids Are Alright and the documentary Glastonbury Fayre .

Tony Richmond will direct the Department of Cinematography at the New York Film Academy, where the curriculum emphasizes hands-on learning.

“I believe that students learn cinematography only by making films, our master’s and one-year programs give students the opportunity to create many projects,” says Richmond. “They have access to the latest equipment and technology, while also gaining fundamental knowledge of visual storytelling.”

In recent years, Tony Richmond has trained a new generation of cameramen. He loves to inspire and mentor filmmakers and looks forward to meeting our students to discuss what they need for their upcoming projects. By becoming faculty leader, Richmond hopes to strengthen NYFA’s ties to the professional film industry and solidify its position as one of the leading schools for camera training.

“I want to share what I learned in my early days with David Lean, Nicolas Roeg, Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Blake Edwards, John Sturges, and pass it on to the next generation of cameramen and filmmakers,” adds Richmond. – Having worked as a cinematographer and director on projects of the highest level, I really understand what it means to build a successful career in the most demanding industry. Even though I started my career in a different era, I am confident that I can teach students how to become good cinematographers and how to keep working in a business that is constantly changing. The key to success as a filmmaker is still personal relationships.”

Richmond emphasized that while there have been many changes in the way movies are made, personal relationships and communication remain the key to doing so in the film business. To get a great story on the screen, you need to know how to do your job, you need to have a trained eye, and you need to get along well with the director and the whole team in general. He also strongly encouraged current students and recent graduates to use the Internet and social media to showcase their work. In the modern world of the film industry, this will serve as your calling card in business.

We are very pleased and honored that Tony Richmond has become NYFA’s Director of Cinematography in Los Angeles. We are confident that Mr. Richmond, in his role as Head of Faculty, will help the film school continue its development as one of the leading schools for cinematographers.
