Frequently Asked Questions – Drop in childcare serving your community

Frequently Asked Questions

I can drop off my kids whenever I need? What’s the catch?

Absolutely!
Our mission is to provide guilt-free childcare for your children in a safe and fun environment. No catch or gimmicks, just an exciting time for your kids and a break for you!

What do I need to do to sign up?

We make the registration process easy! Navigate to our parent portal cust.adventurekidsplaycare.com

And select “sign up”. You can create your account and enter all of your family info, upload documents, make reservations, View our calendar and more! It typically takes 15-20 minutes to complete the process. Download our mobile app after creating your account on the parent portal!

Are immunization records required?

We must have current immunization records on file for all children who are not currently enrolled in school. If your child is enrolled in school or a daycare other than Adventure Kids, we require that you provide the full information, including name, address, and phone number.

Please note that if your child is not enrolled in school, we require immunization records to be up to date and accurate.

If your family has chosen to exempt your child from receiving immunizations, we ask that you provide us with the State Vaccine Exemption Form.

FOR WASHINGTON STATE ONLY:

We are required to have current immunization records on file for ALL children, regardless of their attendance in school, per our WA licensing requirements.

Where will my child be?

We care for children ranging from 6 weeks old to 12 years old. For the safety of all children in our care, we have separate age-appropriate fun-filled areas, that include:

Our infant room:

In this area, the babies are stimulated based on their developmental stage. Our caregivers meet your child’s needs by following their individualized schedules.

The toddler area:

This area is full of playhouses, puzzles, and plenty of trains: there is never a dull moment in this room.

The main floor:

The Playscape in the center of the room serves as anything ranging from a spaceship to a mansion. When your child feels a bit crafty, they can head over to our craft area to create a masterpiece. On any evening, you can find a majority of the kiddos battling it out in a Just Dance competition.

At any given moment, there is fun to be had in every area; if it still sounds too good to be true, bring your kids in for a tour!

What about food?

We provide a balanced breakfast, lunch, and dinner for an extra $4.00 per meal.

Upon check-in, we have forms at the front counter where you and your child can choose from a variety of meal options.

Snacks are served at 10:00 am, 3:00 pm, and 8:00 pm, at no extra cost to you. We know it is easy to get hungry while on such an exciting adventure, so snacks are also available at any time during the day, along with a refreshing cup of water.

For on-the-go hydration, we conveniently have pint-sized water fountains located throughout the center as well.

Can I bring food from home?

You are more than welcome to pack a snack from home as long as there are no nut products; we are a nut-free facility. All meals brought from home can be refrigerated and heated up upon meal time if needed.

Who can pick up my child?

Unless an alternate arrangement has been made beforehand, only parents on the account can pick up a child. Your membership ID card or a photo ID is required at the time of check-out.

After verification, we can store each parent’s photo in the account so that a photo ID is not required on future visits.

If an alternate pick up is needed in an emergency, please notify the center by phone of the change. You will need to verify critical information on your account to authorize pick up from someone other than a parent.

What about the staff?

The team at Adventure Kids comprises fun, caring, and passionate individuals with one common goal: to provide a positive and safe experience for all the kids in their care.

Finding team members who meet the standards set in place is both rigorous and thorough.

We set out to interview those who show a real passion for children and having fun!

Once past the interviewing phase, we perform extensive background checks, including FBI fingerprinting. If all measures have been met, our now “play crew” are trained in each area of the center and mentored by our best team members.

Many of our staff have children of their own and wholeheartedly understand how difficult it can be to entrust your children in someone else’s care. For this reason, all staff make it their mission to provide only the most nurturing environment for your children.

Do you change diapers?

Adventure Kids Playcare pays excellent mind to the different hygiene needs of each child. For this reason, we regularly change diapers throughout the day.

We have a diaper change and do potty breaks every hour and a half.

Children in diapers -and those who need a little assistance- will be changed and/or taken to the restroom every hour and a half.

We ask that you provide a diaper bag with diapers and wipes and extra clothes for those kids that are still training.

If you forget or run out of diapers or wipes, it’s no problem! We have diapers in-house for an additional $1.00 each.

What if my child cries?

Even if a little upset upon drop off, most children are quickly enamored by all of the activities and fun things to do at Adventure Kids. Crying and sad faces are typically gone within minutes.

If, for some reason, after about ten to fifteen minutes, a child is still uneasy, we will reach out to you by phone; this is not necessarily to ask you to pick up your child but to update you on their mood and ask for any advice in consoling them.

How will I know what my children did while at Adventure Kids?

Typically your child will come home with something that they have made while here and a story or two about all the friends they made.

For kiddos who can’t quite give you the full rundown of what they did, we take care of that.

For infants:

We ask that you fill out our “Infant Information Form.” The top half of the form is for you to provide us with general information about your child, including their next expected time to eat and any likes or dislikes. This platform allows you to set out your child’s schedule.

Our caregivers will fill out the bottom half with their activities, food and bottle times, diapering, naps, and even their mood during their stay. A copy of this will be sent home with you at the end of each visit.

For toddlers:

Parents can fill out a “Toddler Form.” The staff fills in the bottom with information on how well your child ate, naps taken, and the activities they participated in.

Is it just free play?

There is almost always a game or craft happening at Adventure Kids. We follow a written schedule that is full of fun activities and games. In between all of the activities we have planned, the kids are free to mingle and play.

There is a vast playscape, video game systems, computers, Legos, play kitchens, costumes, and much more! We are continually getting new and exciting things for the kids!

Weekends at AKPC are a blast as well!

Each Friday and Saturday night are theme nights. All activities are centered on the theme, which makes it easy for the kiddos to get involved. For dinner, we have a pizza party complete and ice cream sundaes for dessert.

What is the Family Savings Plan (FSP)?

FSP is a form of prepayment.

Put money into your account, and at each visit, the total for the stay is deducted from your balance.

The incentive for pre-paying is that you receive a discount of 15%-20%.

The $300 FSP yields a 15%discount, and the $500 FSP will get you 20%.

For example, if you choose to put $300 on your account, you will pay $300, but we will load $345 onto your account; if you spend $500, we will load $600 into your family’s account.

FSP never expires and can be used at any location. It is a great way to save some money!

Do we have to become members?

We have an annual registration of $40; this includes the entire family for a year starting the day you register. Once this is paid, you become a “member.”

All families are required to pay the registration and become members.

However, we do allow first-time visitors without paying the registration, but your hourly rate will increase by $2.00 per hour per child.

Will we need to make a reservation?

You are more than welcome to drop off the kiddos anytime you need us.

We recommend making a reservation to guarantee space for special occasions, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Because our infant rooms fill up fast, infant reservations are always recommended.

Do you offer camps or special programs?

Camps are one of our specialties! We have summer, winter, and spring break camps, with both half-day and full-day options.

The best part is that there is no weekly or monthly commitment to the camps; you can choose which days you want to bring the kiddos in!

Each week is a different theme, and each day is full of games, crafts, and activities.

During the school year, we offer a preschool program known as Adventure Kids University (AKU). Every Monday through Friday from 9 am-1 pm; your child can join us for a truly educational adventure. Just like our camps, there is no weekly or monthly commitment, only a daily rate.

Pricing for both camps and AKU may vary by location; ask a manager for details!

What is the AKU daily schedule?

Do kids nap at Adventure Kids?

Since many of our children have different schedules and are typically here for short periods, we do not have a designated nap time. If you let us know that you would like your child to nap, we will certainly do our best.

We have plenty of resting mats and soft blankets.

If your child will be here in the evening and get sleepy, you are welcome to provide pajamas/sleepwear for your child to make the transition easier upon returning home from an exciting night at AKPC!

Is Adventure Kids safe and secure?

Keeping the children in our care safe is a top priority of the staff at AKPC. Necessary measures are taken each day to ensure the safety of all children.

Our front entrance is a controlled access entry, and our staff and management will only open the door upon visual recognition. We encourage parents to stop by for information and tours; as a safety precaution, the front office may request a valid state photo ID.

Only staff is permitted in the play areas; parents may walk their children back if accompanied by a manager.

For additional security, our center is equipped with security cameras focused on the facility’s entry and exit and in each room, excluding private areas such as restrooms.

What happens if I am late?

If you cannot pick up your child by the centers closing time, there will be a fee of $1.00 per minute per child assessed to your total.

For example, if you have two children and arrive 10 minutes after the center has closed, there will be an additional $20 charged in addition to the total accumulated for the stay.

Our evening play crew appreciates your acknowledgment of this policy.

Average Cost of Child Care

Many new parents realize they should start saving for college as soon as possible. But there’s an expense that can cost as much as college and starts much sooner: child care.

Shocking but true: In the U.S, the cost of child care at a day care center, full-time, is about as much as annual tuition and fees at a public college in the same state.

The day care costs range from a state average of $5,547 for an infant in Alabama to $16,549 for one in Massachusetts. A full-time nanny can cost as much as or more than tuition and fees at an Ivy League institution. Yet unlike college, for which almost all students can get subsidies and loans, child care is usually paid out of parents’ pockets.

Average cost of child care

Child care costs can vary widely by type and by geographic location. And families may need different amounts depending on parents’ work schedules and other factors such as the child’s age and time spent in school. When parents can’t care for their children themselves, most patch together a variety of solutions from among the following:

For families who must pay someone to watch their little ones at least some of the time, the annual average cost of child care in the U. S. is $3,863 for a middle-income, two-parent family with an infant. This figure includes a broad array of child care arrangements, from occasional babysitting to nanny care. Single parents with lower incomes pay about $1,948 on average, while high-earning couples pay about $11,000 per year on average. Unsurprisingly, families with more than one child pay higher costs for their care.

Why is child care so expensive? In a word: labor. While technology has helped workers in other industries to be more productive in recent years, it hasn’t changed child care much. We still need human hands to pick up, feed and diaper babies; and human eyes to keep toddlers from eating sand or wandering off.

Child care workers in the U.S. earn relatively low salaries. In 2012, the typical child care worker earned $9.38 per hour, or $19,510 per year. While the cost of child care is typically borne in full by the parents who need the care, low-income families are eligible for child care subsidies in many states.

How much does day care cost?

The average cost across all states in the U.S. for an infant in full-time child care is $9,991 annually.

Most states require child care providers to meet certain standards, like specific staff-to-child ratios. For example, Maryland day care centers must have one staffer for every three infants, while in Georgia that ratio is 1:6. As much as 80% of a day care center’s expenses cover employee salaries and payroll-related expenditures, like taxes and benefits.

Day care providers might also have to pay for space, equipment, utilities, facilities maintenance, food, insurance, training and background checks for staff and other general safety and administrative costs.

About 35% of children under the age of five who need child care go to a day care center. An additional 8% of young children go to a home-based day care. In these, caretakers tend to earn less, and may not have benefits like health care or retirement savings plans. They often have lower expenses for things like rent or mortgage, and so cost less for parents.

The average annual cost for an infant in full-time care in a home-based day care center is $7,431.

How much does a nanny cost?

An in-home babysitter, or nanny, may be a better solution for some families, especially those with multiple children. About 5% of young children with a child care arrangement are cared for in their home by a babysitter or nanny.

The nanny market is competitive, with more experienced workers demanding higher pay. Families also try to woo nannies with good benefits, like health insurance, paid vacation and guaranteed pay on days or weeks when he or she isn’t needed, like when the family goes on vacation or a grandparent is visiting.

The average salary for a nanny is $19.14 per hour (that’s $39,811 annually for 40-hour weeks), according to a 2017 survey of mostly U.S.-based nannies done by the International Nanny Association. It ranges from an average of $14.08 per hour for a nanny with less than one year of experience to $21.98 per hour, on average, for those with 20-25 years of experience.

About 62% of nannies are compensated for overtime at time and a half, and 60% receive an annual bonus from their employer. More than 70% also get paid vacation and paid holidays. Only 17% of nannies get their health insurance costs paid either fully or partially.

U.S. families who pay a nanny (or any other domestic help) more than $2,300 per year are responsible for paying social security and Medicare taxes of 15.3% of the cash wages, according to the IRS. This amount can be split between the employer and the employee.

If your child’s caregiver earns more than $1,000 from you in any one quarter, you must also pay federal unemployment tax of 6% on the first $7,000 of their earnings. And depending on your state, you might also have to pay state unemployment taxes, workers’ compensation insurance and disability benefits.

How much does a babysitter cost?

Parents who don’t work full time, or who have nontraditional schedules, can sometimes provide more child care themselves and use babysitters to fill in the gaps. Parents in U.S. cities generally pay babysitters between $15 and $23 per hour, averaging $17.50 per hour (or $36,400 for one year of full-time care), according to SitterCity. The rate is highest in expensive cities like San Francisco.

Families with more children typically pay more per hour. And nannies or sitters with special qualifications, like a second language, many years of experience, CPR or First Aid certification, or who do some housework, such as laundry, might also charge more for their services. Most families provide food for the caregiver when he or she is in the home or offer a ride or taxi fare for travel to or from the home late at night.

Babysitter wages are also subject to the tax laws for domestic employees, as outlined above.

How much does a baby nurse cost?

New parents without access to maternity or paternity leave benefits might have to go back to work when their newborn is still waking up every three hours. Others, with cash to spare, might also appreciate the assistance of an experienced newborn caregiver. Enter the baby nurse, who can come to your home for 12-hour shifts or even round-the-clock help during those early weeks of your baby’s life. Some stay for just a week or two, while others for up to six weeks or longer.

New mothers report paying a baby nurse, or night nurse, rates that start at about $11 per hour in lower-cost-of-living parts of the U.S. Baby nurses hired through agencies tend to cost more. In some expensive cities, families pay up to $30 per hour.

How much does an au pair cost?

If you have a spare room in your home for a live-in caregiver for your child, you might consider hosting an au pair. Several agencies can help you connect with a young person from another country as well as coordinate their visa, travel, insurance and orientation. Several of these agencies include Cultural Care Au Pair and Au Pair in America, to name a few.

The average cost for an au pair for a full year is about $18,000, plus room and board. In return for this expense, you get about 45 hours of child care per week. It breaks down to less than $8 per hour, alongside your extra costs for groceries and other family activities, like going out to restaurants or traveling for a ski trips or summer vacation, since au pairs are generally treated as members of the family.

How much families pay for child care

The percentage of income paid for child care by a family with a working mother has ranged between 6% and 8% in the U.S. since 1985. In 2011, such families, including many who only require part-time or even occasional paid child care, paid an average of 7.2% of their income.

Those who require full-time child care tend to pay a much larger share of their income for the service. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services considers child care to be affordable when it is 10% or less of a family’s income. However, in 38 states, the average annual cost of full-time care for an infant at a day care center is above this threshold.

The cost of full-time child care can be a huge burden for low income and single parent families, as well as those who live in high-cost-of-living parts of the country.

Throughout the country, the cost of full-time care at a day care center eats up 40% of the state median income for single mothers. And in New York State, where child care is least affordable as a percentage of income, the typical married couple must pay 16% of their income (on average, $14,500) for full-time care of an infant at a day care center.

The IRS allows families a tax credit for up to 35% of qualifying expenses up to $3,000 for one child under the age of 13, and up to $6,000 for two or more children. This translates to a maximum of $1,050 in tax savings for one child (i.e., 35% of $3,000) or $2,100 for two children. The actual credit depends on your adjusted gross income (AGI) and decreases to 20% of allowable expenses for parents with an AGI of more than $43,000 per year.

The cost of child care may be as challenging to many families as sleep deprivation is during their child’s early years. Fortunately, it’s necessary for a limited time, until the children go to school and become more self-sufficient. If it allows both parents to work, they can reap benefits both in terms of salary and experience, which might pay off in higher wages down the line.

Child Care – A Day Without Child Care

Our Detailed Demands

The work of caring for our children is some of the most important work in our lives. Affordable, quality child care makes it possible for parents to go out and do what we do every day, knowing that the most precious people in our lives are in good hands. Yet, it’s some of the most invisible and undervalued work. Child care providers have been hit hard by COVID, following decades of underinvestment and disregard for their essential role in nurturing our youngest children and fueling our economy. And parents with young kids are struggling. The costs of essentials like rent and child care have skyrocketed over the last decades. We have reached our tipping point.

We are calling for a caring economy that values early education and care providers. We believe child care providers should have a powerful voice in the system that impacts them, that includes granting rights to providers to choose to have a union.  And we need a child care infrastructure that makes child care affordable and accessible for all families. .

We demand public investments for:

1) Living wages for child care providers
2) An equitable child care system built on racial justice
3) Affordable child care for all families

This requires:

  • Transformational federal investments in early care and education in an economic package passed through reconciliation that (1) guarantees child care for every family who needs it, whether black, white, or brown, and helps families pay for it; (2) pays a living wage and compensation on par with K-12 teachers to early care and education workers, who are disproportionately black and brown women; and (3) invests in a high quality and equitable system that supports child care in schools, centers, and home-based family child care.
  • Spending down of state CCDBG Expansion funds and Child Care Stabilization Grant funding from the American Rescue Plan (ARP) to improve access and affordability for parents and at the same time to raise compensation and benefits for the ECE workforce.
  • Creating a local vehicle for sustained investments in early care and education from city and county ARP funds to make early care more accessible and affordable for parents, support ECE workers, and expand the supply of child care in underserved communities.

What and Why

That’s why on Monday May 9th some providers are going on strike by shutting their doors for the day, others are calling out, some are working with families to join rallies, send letters, and make phone calls, and some are shutting down their centers just for an hour or two with support from the families they serve to send a message to our elected leaders that our country does not work even one “day without child care.

The COVID pandemic has reinforced the importance of child care for our families and economy, but it has also exacerbated a child care crisis that has existed for decades. And we’re facing the brunt of that crisis right now.

What’s more, our child care system is predominantly led by women of color who have one of the most important responsibilities: providing the foundation for all of our childrens’ futures. And yet, providers are among the lowest paid workers in the nation and are going hungry, struggling to pay for housing and our families’ other basic needs.

Parents, and especially women of color, are being forced out of the workforce as expenses like rent have skyrocketed with child care being one of the most expensive costs for families across the nation. We have reached our tipping point.

We are calling for a caring economy that values early education and care providers. We believe child care providers should have a powerful voice in the system that impacts them, that includes granting rights to providers to choose to have a union. And we need a child care infrastructure that makes child care affordable and accessible for all families.

For generations, our government has historically underfunded our child care system. This country has not recognized or valued child care providers’ labor, especially those providing care in low-income communities of color. And we have failed to address how vital child care is to parents’ ability to work and provide for their families. Unaffordable child care also impacts the small business community, in particular, Black and Brown small business owners, who are more often women and are already primary caregivers. Without a meaningful investment in child care, we are putting children, families, and the economic health of our communities at risk.

But now, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to acknowledge the incredible value that caregivers add to our economy, help create jobs that provide a living wage, and support families.

It is well past time that Congress makes meaningful public investments to raise wages for educators and guarantee child care with lower costs for parents. It is time to value people who provide the care that keeps our country running. And every child and family deserves access to high-quality, affordable child care, to be able to put food on the table, and to save for their futures. That’s why, on May 9th, the day after Mother’s Day, parents and providers are coming together across the country in solidarity to show our elected leaders that our country cannot function without child care. We’re taking action to say our economy does not work even one “day without child care.”

Caring for a newborn baby – Medical portal about health

The birth of a child is both a joy and a great responsibility. Newborn care is provided around the clock and includes feeding, changing diapers, bathing, caring for the umbilical wound, putting to bed and much more that new parents should learn in advance.

Development of the child in the first month after birth

In addition to meeting the multiple basic needs of the child, an important condition for caring for a newborn is the development of his senses.

It may seem that a child of the first month of life is not at all involved in what is happening around him. He only eats, sleeps and cries, signaling a particular need. Actually it is not. He perceives the surrounding information, but differently than adults.

Baby’s vision

Children of the first month of life are short-sighted. There is nothing surprising in the fact that they do not respond to movement further than 30–50 cm from the eyes. At this distance, they see the image blurry. The optimal distance for visual interaction with a newborn is 20-25 cm. At this distance, he clearly sees the mother’s face, her emotions, smile, eyes. At the same distance, the child is offered attractive things and pictures for viewing.

The baby should first be offered monochrome, black and white images, photographs, objects. They do not overload the psyche and contribute to the development of vision.

Newborns are sensitive to light. Therefore, during sleep, it is not recommended to turn on bright lighting, a nightlight is enough.

A child from birth should be able to follow the slow movement of an object at a distance of up to 30 cm from the eyes.

The eye muscles of a child at this age are not yet sufficiently developed, so rolling and squinting of the eyes is considered normal.

Newborn Hearing

A baby’s hearing aids start working in the womb. There he is constantly surrounded by the sounds of the work of the organs and systems of the mother. The monotonous beat of the heart, the murmur of blood and the digestive system, the muffled voices of the parents are favorite sounds for the baby from birth.

To soothe a child of the first month of life, sometimes it is enough just to immerse him in those soothing monotonous sounds that he heard before birth. White noise, soft speech or singing of the mother has a magical power.

After birth, sounds become more pronounced and louder, which makes the child react to them with increased interest at first.

Taste and smell

Taste and olfactory receptors of an infant are not sufficiently developed, but he can already perceive and prefer certain tastes and smells. So in most cases, children are supportive of sweet and flatly refuse bitter and sour food, water.

Children’s taste preferences begin to form from birth. Therefore, children who are bottle-fed with a mixture that has a sweetish aftertaste give preference to sweet foods and dishes in the future.

The taste of mother’s milk depends on the mother’s diet. Thus, she can adjust the future taste preferences of the child.

Tactile sensations

An equally important basic need of the baby is tactile contact, touches, hugs, kisses, stroking the mother. They soothe, give a sense of security, comfort. They seem to return to the womb, where it is warm, cramped and reliable.

Rigid seams on children’s clothes are uncomfortable for baby’s delicate skin.

For a newborn to feel comfortable, he must be surrounded by objects that are pleasant to the touch. It is through them that he learns the world around him.

Behavior of a newborn

A child of the first month of life should have basic skills, the presence of which parents can check on their own:

  • reaction to sound, light, movement – is expressed in turning the head or moving the gaze towards the stimulus;
  • crying as the main way of communication – they show the need for food, affection, cleanliness, sleep;
  • a positive reaction to the satisfaction of the need that has arisen – as soon as the child’s demand is met, he should stop crying. If this does not happen, you should make sure that there are no other unmet needs.

Frequent and prolonged crying of a newborn for no apparent reason should alert parents and become a reason to contact a specialist.

Baby’s motor activity

At an early stage of development, a newborn is limited in movement. He cannot hold his head and roll over. But he already has a set of reflexes that ensure his existence:

  • search reflex – with its help, newborns find the breast or bottle with their lips and provide themselves with food;
  • sucking reflex – the child independently obtains food for himself, applying efforts to this;
  • grasping reflex – the baby firmly squeezes the finger of an adult in his palm;
  • Moro reflex – an unconditional defensive reaction to negative external factors, expressed by fear, increased breathing and heart rate, and the production of adrenaline.

Parents can check the presence of all these reflexes on their own, but a doctor can diagnose them more accurately. Patronage of the child of the first month is carried out by the local pediatrician.

Cognitive and emotional development

The cognitive (cognitive) abilities of a newborn baby are still limited. He draws the main information from his parents, looking at their facial expressions, facial expressions, and movements.

The emotional sphere is actively developing. If immediately after birth, the baby experienced negative emotions due to the physiological separation from the mother and the appearance of many external stimuli and needs, then by the end of the second month of life, the baby is already smiling, responding to the voice or face of the mother.

The social development of a newborn is the basis of his future relationship with the outside world. Emotional connection with adults helps to lay a solid foundation for social interaction. Thanks to parents and other relatives, the baby develops self-awareness, he understands the fact of the presence of other people around him outside the family, joins the world.

Rules for caring for a newborn

It is better to familiarize yourself with them even before the baby is born, so as not to make mistakes in a stressful situation.

  1. The child needs cleanliness. But it must be distinguished from sterility. It is necessary to observe basic hygiene when interacting with the baby, wash hands, wear clean clothes, and exclude contact with patients with viral diseases.
  2. Newborns need to be cared for. Their musculoskeletal frame is still weak, so they need to support their head and neck.
  3. The baby of the first month of life does not tolerate sudden movements and shaking. Therefore, while traveling in transport, transporting in a carrier, motion sickness on your hands, you should avoid too active movement, which will not only cause discomfort to the newborn, but can also lead to intracranial bleeding with a fatal outcome.

Newborns are very sensitive. And if any action of the parents gives him discomfort, they should be stopped immediately. An exception is measures aimed at preserving and maintaining the life and health of the baby.

Feeding

The type of feeding the baby depends solely on the desire and ability of the mother. Breastfeeding will always be preferred.

The number of daily feedings is determined based on the individual characteristics of the baby. It is recommended to take a break between meals for no more than two to three hours, but if the child shows anxiety, gives signs that he is hungry, then he should be fed on demand.

The duration of a breastfeeding meal is 10-15 minutes per breast. With artificial feeding, the volume of the required portion is calculated according to the instructions and is not more than 90 ml at a time.

Adapted milk formula for feeding is diluted at one time and becomes unusable after 20-30 minutes.

To understand whether a newborn is full of breast milk, it is enough to pay attention to his behavior. If he is calm, sleeps well, gains weight steadily, urinates 5-6 times and empties his bowels several times, there is nothing to worry about.

Changing a diaper

Change the diaper when full. It is convenient to do this on the changing table, but everything you need must be prepared in advance so as not to leave the baby unattended for a second.

In addition to a clean diaper, you will need wet wipes, a sterile cloth and a container of clean warm water, ointment or diaper rash powder.

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after changing a diaper.

When changing a diaper, clean the genitals with wet wipes or a wet cloth. When washing girls, movements with a napkin should be carried out in the direction from the labia to the anus, so as not to infect the infection.

To avoid diaper rash and rashes in the genital area, change diapers more often, air baths longer without a diaper, and use zinc-based barrier products that minimize the negative effects of moisture on the skin.

Clothes

Newborns are suitable for natural, elastic, soft fabrics that are breathable. Clothing should be loose, not restricting movement, with wide sleeves, cuffs, ankles and a neck. All buttons and buttons should be located on the front side, as well as the seams. Nothing should make the baby uncomfortable.

If the child vomits frequently and profusely after eating, protect clothing with a bib.

Bathing

The first month of life, until the umbilical wound has healed, bathe the baby carefully, not completely immersed in water. Care products should be soft and consist of natural ingredients.

The first month a newborn sleeps up to 20 hours a day. The duration of sleep is 2-4 hours, then it is replaced by the wakefulness phase. At night, the baby wakes up every 2-4 hours to feed.

Caring for and caring for a newborn baby is pleasant, but at first it can be difficult. Having prepared in advance for the birth of a child, having bought all the necessary supplies for care and feeding, you can significantly simplify your task.

It is clear that the necessary minimum of things for a child depends on the possibilities and views of future parents on the upbringing and life of the baby. But still, some things are so universal that they will be useful to everyone.

Newborn baby sleep

It can be organized in different ways: someone puts the baby in the crib, someone gets by with a universal transformer playpen, someone prefers to sleep together (according to all safety rules!).

Bed, comfortable mattress according to its size, linen made from natural fabrics. Do not take bumpers, blankets and pillows – they pose a threat of suffocation and are not needed for a child under one year old.

What can be useful?

Sleeping bag (with or without handle holes) is inexpensive and replaces standard swaddling, which is uncomfortable for the baby. The handles in the cocoon are fixed, while the body is not squeezed. A cocoon for sleep and a smart swing delight some of the parents, but for someone they become unjustified waste – the child does not sleep in them and asks for pens. If possible, take a sample from a friend first. Also now on the Internet there are many services through which these things can be easily rented. After all, they are only needed for a few months.

What can you do without?

White noise toy stands like an entire bed and can be easily replaced with the same sounds that can be found in smartphone applications or simply turned on online.

A comforter popular in Instagram stores is, in fact, a rag with a mother’s scent. The design in the form of a toy is completely indifferent to a one-month-old baby, any mother’s T-shirt can easily replace this accessory.

Baby food

Mom’s breast is the most useful and affordable feeding gadget for any baby. And what is needed for comfortable breastfeeding by the mother herself?

Minimum requirement

Breast pads, nipple cream, nursing bra, comfortable nursing clothing.

If a mother has to express her milk to breastfeed or her baby is forced to bottle feed, you will need to buy several bottles with nipples and accessories for washing baby dishes. But do not rush to buy these items before the baby is born, postpone the purchase in case of emergency. Remember that even a few episodes of bottle-feeding in the first months can negatively affect the establishment of breastfeeding.

What can be useful?

The nursing pillow allows you to feed your baby more comfortably from a sitting or lying position. A breast pump is sometimes needed to avoid stagnation of milk in the breast or to stock up on the most healthy infant food in case the mother needs to go somewhere alone.

What can you do without?

A bottle with different compartments for water and formula powder, a self-warming bottle and even a bottle-feeding machine help speed up these processes and quickly feed a crying baby who, for some reason, ended up on bottle-fed. The main disadvantage is their price, so parents of babies on IV still often prefer to prepare the mixture on their own.

Beware of the word “special”. “Special” wet wipes for breasts and nipples are no better than regular wet wipes. As well as a special conditioner for baby clothes, and a special blender for making baby food!

!—>

Bathing a baby

Bathing is an excellent tempering procedure and an excellent home physiotherapy for a baby. You can take baths as soon as the umbilical cord residue disappears (before that, it is enough to wash the child with plain running water and wipe it with a damp cloth).

Minimum requirement

A cozy bath towel is enough to blot (do not rub!) the baby’s skin after bathing and baby neutral soap in case of strong contamination.

What can be useful?

Water thermometer. But usually it is used for the first five baths, and then you just learn how to check the temperature of the water with your hand.

What can you do without?

If you are confident enough, you will not need a small bath – you can bathe the child immediately in a large bath, supporting him with your hands. A whole range of bathing products, herbal decoctions and other cosmetics are not really needed by a small child. Also, do not take a bathing circle, which is not very beneficial for the health and development of the child.

First walks with a newborn

Which stroller to choose is one of the main questions for new parents. Many families use a recumbent stroller for no more than 6 months, but few completely manage to do without it at all. It is convenient to purchase a 3 in 1 model, where, in addition to the recumbent and sitting cradles, an infant carrier is attached (in such sets, it is placed on the chassis of the stroller and serves as a good pleasure vehicle). If the baby was born in spring or early summer, then 2 in 1 may well suit you: a seated stroller with a well-reclining back and a removable seat, instead of which an ergonomic infant carrier can be installed on the chassis. In any case, a car seat is a must-buy for anyone who is going to travel with a child by car. In the stroller you need to buy a small mattress, mosquito net, rain cover. In winter, a muff for mother’s hands is useful.

Buying a sling or not is a personal matter for everyone, someone cannot imagine life without it, and someone still fails to learn how to wind it. If possible, borrow a sling from a friend and try it out for a few days before buying your own. A convenient alternative to a sling is a baby carrier. Today, there are many variations of such backpacks on the market, you can choose a model for every taste and budget. The main thing is that the backpack is ergonomic (with the anatomically correct position of the child’s legs) and an insert for newborns is attached to it. But remember that almost all backpacks have age restrictions, as a rule they can only be used from 2-3 months of the child.

As for children’s wardrobe, it’s hard to give any advice, it all depends on the season and the preferences of the parents. The main thing is to repeat in the clothing store like a mantra that babies grow very quickly. Even faster than you think when you read these words.

This is a manifestation of care and attention, supervision, guardianship, service and satisfaction of the basic needs that a baby has.

Features of newborn care. What does the child need?

Each specialist will answer it from the point of view of his experience and field of activity. We will try to look at the postpartum period through the eyes of the baby himself.

What happened in his life? How has its environment changed?
Look at the table below and try to determine for yourself the needs of the newborn that arise in connection with the change in his environment, and find ways to meet them.

In Russia, children were swaddled not out of a whim, but out of necessity, identified over the centuries. A child who has left the cramped space to which he has already become accustomed is much calmer in conditions that mimic the uterus. Any good idea can be brought to the point of absurdity. Therefore, it is not necessary to go to extremes and shackle the baby with a diaper. The point is not in fetters, but in smoothing out the transition period.

Children were bathed in diapers for a different reason: before there was no plastic, paint, acrylic and other benefits of civilization. So they protected the baby’s skin from the appearance of splinters and abrasions with a cloth.

Typical mistakes of parents

  1. Silence. Sound deprivation scares children. The silence makes them uncomfortable. Children like adult speech, soft background sounds. Lullabies aren’t just for falling asleep. During sleep and wakefulness, they are also useful.
  2. Intricately tailored clothing. Children perceive dressing manipulations very negatively. They especially do not like things that have a closed neck. They remind them of their childbirth experience of the hardships of that journey. Therefore, minimizing such clothing will make life easier for parents and the baby.
  3. Lots of dress up activities. The more items of clothing and operations with them, the more irritable the baby. This is the law of the genre. Either tolerate his displeasure, or make changes to the wardrobe.
  4. Chest – as a way to close the mouth. Food reinforcement of negative behavior only disorients the baby. Imagine that all your needs come down to a table and food. Is it always necessary? Try to understand the cause of crying first. Chest is an encouragement of positive calm behavior, persistent expectation of reward. The mammary gland is a source of food, and not a multifunctional gadget for all occasions.

Hygiene of the newborn

Daily cleansing of the nose, eyes, ears can be considered an excess, if there is no discharge from them, the child is healthy and nothing bothers him.

To protect the nasal mucosa, nature endowed man and his offspring with a sneeze reflex. Therefore, sneezing is a completely natural mechanism for cleansing the nasal cavity, and the child has the right to do so.

To protect the eyes, there is tear fluid that is evacuated into the nasal cavity. Additional actions to clean the eyes of the baby are not required!

Earwax protects the external auditory canal. The use of cotton swabs to clean it is strictly prohibited!

Conclusion: do not touch the natural openings of babies without the need.

Newborn skin care

The peculiarity of the structure of the skin of children in the first months of life is the absence of sweat glands. Therefore, by and large, there is no need for a daily bath in order to cleanse the skin. An evening bath is more of a family bonding ritual and a pleasant physical experience for the child.

Another feature is increased vulnerability. Therefore, in the first month, you can not rub the skin with a cloth and apply rubbing movements on the surface of the skin after water procedures. Only light wet movements!

The high permeability of the skin of newborns limits the use of adult cosmetics. Only special baby foams, mousses, creams, etc. are allowed to be used.

A thin lipid layer imposes restrictions on the use of solid soap, even for children. For daily care, only liquid baby soap is recommended.

Baby milk is water based, moisturizes the skin and can be used several times a day.

Creams are oil based and therefore cannot be reused. You must carefully read the instructions for their use.

Emulsions, mousses, foams and other forms of cosmetics require careful study of the manufacturer’s instructions and application as needed.

About folds

Skin folds are not so many, but each has its own characteristics.

  • The neck is the deepest. Crumbs, threads, milk or mixture can get into it, which can lead to irritation and redness of the skin. Therefore, it is advisable to examine it and wash it 2-3 times a day.
  • The behind-the-ear crease is the most forgotten. It is often not mistaken for a fold. But it exists and requires attention and care.
  • Between the buttock and two buttocks – the most favorite folds of parents. Their condition is not left without attention and any changes are immediately noticed. The skin in the area of contact with disposable diapers can be protected with special diaper creams to prevent dryness and diaper rash. It is very easy to check the work of such a cream: apply it to yourself on the back of your hand. The cream should be easily and evenly applied, leave no white marks, and be well absorbed. The contents of the diaper will not irritate the skin, and the diaper itself will not be able to dry the skin.

How to cut the nails of a newborn

A detailed article on this subject can be found here.

They grow fast enough that the baby can injure himself.
Manicure set should be individual, only for a child: scissors, tweezers, nail file. Which tool to use depends on the skills and abilities of the adult. Tweezers are lighter, easier and safer to use, but it’s up to you.

Burrs require mandatory treatment with a solution of brilliant green or fucorcin. A solution of iodine 5% must not be used!

These problems can be hidden in mittens and forgotten, as many modern mothers do. But! The cam is also folds. The palm is an important reflexogenic zone that has a strong connection with the brain. Working with baby’s hands, finger massage is an investment in his future. Hide or develop – everyone has their own choice.

Drawing conclusions

The task of adults in the first month of life is to provide comfortable conditions during the adaptation period of the child’s transition from the water element to the air element. Extra worries and actions only complicate life. Spare yourself and the baby. Be in harmony with yourself and the baby.

When a mother returns with a new family member from the maternity hospital, she begins a new life. From the first moments in the walls of the house, the baby needs care, affection and love. But how to properly organize to be your child? How to organize your space so that everything you need is at hand and you don’t have to look for the right things in all the cabinets? How and what to treat in a newborn? Let’s try to figure it out.

Organize a place for baby and mother

The place where the baby will be should be comfortable and, most importantly, fully processed. A newborn needs clean clothes and sheets with diapers. Before any use of clothes or using a diaper, it is advisable to iron them on both sides. All nipples and bottles of the baby are subjected to daily processing. You can process both by boiling, and with the help of a small home sterilizer. The bath of the newborn needs to be washed after each use.

Everything you need to care for a child should be at hand. An excellent solution to the issue can be a changing table. The child’s clothes and everything necessary for personal hygiene are put in his boxes. And the reclining wide table top serves for swaddling and changing clothes of the baby.

The bed should be placed as close as possible to the parent’s bed at first. So mom will hear if the baby wakes up and can immediately take him to feed. And if he is just restless in a dream, then it will be possible to reach out between the bars of the crib and stroke the child on the back or on the tummy, calming him.

Baby care

A newborn needs daily toileting. The best time to do it is between feedings. Clean clothes, diapers, powder, cream, water, diapers and anything else you may need when washing your baby should be prepared in advance. Now you need to wash the baby, wipe it with a soft cloth or cotton, sprinkle or smear the crotch with cream to avoid prickly heat. After that, you need to clean the baby’s ears with a wet flagellum, the baby’s nose must also be treated from the inside with a wet, sterile flagellum to remove accumulated dirt, in the form of dust and mucus. If the baby’s eyelashes are stuck together, the eyes should be wiped with a cotton swab dipped in a warm, weak solution of furacilin.

When a child is born, the umbilical cord is first cut and then bandaged. The remaining segment of about half a centimeter dries out in a few days. After the umbilical cord falls off, a small wound remains in its place, which forms into the navel. To prevent infection from entering the baby’s body through the resulting wound, it must be properly looked after. One of the main procedures for caring for the umbilical wound is treatment with an antiseptic. If the skin around the navel turns red, then you need to see a doctor, because the delicate skin of the baby is very susceptible to various inflammations.

To prevent the baby from scratching itself, it is necessary to take care of his nails. With sharp scissors with rounded tips, you need to cut the baby’s nails. The nails on the hands are trimmed, rounding the tips, and on the legs, the nails must be cut in a straight line to avoid ingrown nail plate. The best time to take care of your child’s nails is after bathing.

A newborn also needs to be washed after each bowel movement. Girls are washed away towards the anus, boys vice versa.

If the baby was born with long hair (sometimes it happens), it is very important to keep his hair in order to avoid the appearance of tangles and crusts. The combing procedure should be carried out with a brush with soft bristles. It is important that the brush can be easily washed. The place of the fontanel is also combed, but with some caution.

What else do you need to know about a newborn baby?

When putting the child to bed, it is necessary to muffle the sounds in the room – turn down the TV or radio, turn down the volume on the music center. Daytime sleep in the open air is very useful and, if the weather and living conditions allow, it should be practiced. It is important that during sleep in the fresh air the air temperature is above zero.

Some newborns may develop a rash on the face. There is nothing to worry about, the rash will pass in a few days. If the parents wrap the baby too much, then a rash in the form of small pink pimples may appear on the baby’s skin. This is the so-called sweating. To avoid its occurrence, it is necessary to stop wrapping the baby too tightly. It is even useful for newborns to be without clothes for some time at room temperature – this is how you can begin to temper the baby.

It is very important to monitor your baby’s stool as it is the indicator of a child’s health. In the first month of life, the baby’s stool can be up to seven times a day, and this is normal.

Feeding your baby begins in the maternity hospital and the first advice is given by the doctor and the midwife. At home, it is very important to take care of the feeding place – it should be cozy, secluded and convenient for mommy. Wash your breasts before feeding. Before you give the breast to the baby, you need to express some milk. In time, feeding takes from ten to fifteen minutes, depending on the age of the baby.

Place the baby’s head in the crook of the elbow. The baby will feel the smell of milk and a touch on the breast, he will begin to open his mouth in search of a nipple. It is very important to ensure that the little one captures not only the nipple itself, but also the circle around it – the areola – in order to avoid swallowing excess air. It is important not to interfere with the baby during feeding. It is also necessary to ensure that the chest does not block the child’s airways. If the baby has eaten, but does not want to let go of the breast for a long time, using it as a kind of nipple, you need to gently squeeze the baby’s nose.

After eating, hold the baby upright for a while, stroking the back of the baby. It is possible to put the child to bed only after burping.

An important condition for the comfort of the baby is bathing in the bath. The temperature in the room where the baby is bathed should not be higher than 22 degrees. In order for the healing of the umbilical wound to occur faster in the water, it is recommended to add a few drops of potassium permanganate. The best time to bathe is before bed. This will help the baby relax and calm down after a busy day for him. The optimum water temperature in the bath is 36-38 degrees.

Walking with a newborn

Walking is very important for a newborn, and the first time it should take place no later than seven days after discharge from the maternity hospital. The duration of the walk depends on the air temperature outside. For example, in winter at a temperature of -10, a fifteen-minute walk will be enough for a baby. In spring, at a temperature of +10, you can walk up to 25 minutes, in autumn, when the air temperature ranges from 5 to 10 degrees, a walk lasting 20 minutes will be enough. In summer, the walk can be up to 2 hours in the absence of rain and wind.

It is simply impossible to enumerate all the rules for caring for a newborn baby. But it’s not that important. You need to know the main points, and everything else will be replaced by mother’s warmth and affection. Surrounded by care, the child will quickly grow and gain strength, and soon the first chores over the baby will be replaced by others, no less pleasant. And mommy will no longer think about how to properly wash her eyes or nose, but about how her little one would not dine from the same bowl with a cat or taste the earth from a flower pot!

Many mothers-to-be and those who have already met their babies cannot pass indifferently in stores past departments with children’s clothing. I want my child to be the most beautiful and elegant. MedAboutMe will share tips on how to choose children’s clothes and tell you if clothes affect children’s health.

Influence of clothing on children’s health

In humans, the skin is an important organ that performs a number of vital functions. The skin is a barrier that protects the body from the introduction of toxins and bacteria into it. The skin plays a significant role in thermoregulation, namely body temperature is one of the important indicators of human health. There is one more significant function &mdash protection against mechanical influences of the environment.

Children of the first year of life have peculiarities in the structure and functioning of the skin. She is very sensitive and vulnerable, easily susceptible to infections, the immune properties of the skin are immature. Clothing is one of the factors protecting the skin from adverse influences. Properly selected clothes for the baby help to maintain the integrity and normal functioning of the skin, and with it the health of children.

What to look for when choosing clothes for children

Nowadays, many children suffer from allergic reactions to various agents. These include dyes present in the fabric. Therefore, special attention should be paid to clothing that fits directly to the body of the baby. It is worth stopping the choice on clothes of light colors, it contains the least amount of various dyes.

Clothing made from natural fabrics (cotton or linen) allows the skin to “breathe”, which is very important for babies. Undershirts, shirts, sliders, bodysuits should be predominantly from these materials. It is no coincidence that many children’s things are sewn with the seams out. This prevents excessive friction of delicate baby skin on the fabric and creates comfort for the baby.

Intermediate layer is usually worn for walking or when the air in the room is cool. It includes all kinds of suits, sweaters, pants, sweatshirts. They can be made from both natural fabrics (wool, velor) and synthetic ones (fleece, acrylic, etc.). In order for the clothes to retain heat well, but at the same time the child does not overheat, it is important to dress him according to the weather. After a few walks, most mothers are well oriented on how to dress the baby.

As the baby’s outerwear, parents usually choose envelopes or overalls (regular and transformers). It should be borne in mind that in an envelope or overalls without legs it is often not possible to fasten a child with seat belts in a car seat, because it will not be possible to pass the belt between the baby’s legs. In this case, the child will need different clothes to travel in the car.

Clothing for babies in the maternity hospital

For many, the maternity hospital is associated with tightly swaddled babies. Currently, swaddling children in a maternity hospital while staying together is not a strict rule. Parents themselves choose whether to swaddle the baby or not. You do not need to bring diapers to the maternity hospital with you, they are given out in sufficient quantities.

If you wish, you can bring any clothes for your baby with you to the maternity hospital. It must be washed and ironed. Laundry in the maternity hospital is generally prohibited. Therefore, clothes should be in sufficient quantity, or you can give them to relatives for washing.

Immediately after birth, the baby is put on a cap and socks. This is necessary to prevent hypothermia (low body temperature), which has an adverse effect on the health of children. A cap and socks are usually worn by children throughout their stay in the maternity hospital, although this is not a strict rule. It depends on the temperature of the surrounding air and on whether the child maintains body temperature well.

It is good to have undershirts or shirts with you. The put on shirt provides a layer of fabric between the arms and the body of the baby. This is the prevention of diaper rash and irritation, which very often occurs in the armpits in newborns. In addition, a child dressed in a vest can be swaddled up to the armpits or to the waist, while freeing the handles. This is especially true when the rooms are hot (in summer or during the heating season).

Preference should be given to undershirts with sewn-in sleeves, or purchase “scratches” (mittens for a newborn) separately. They protect the baby from accidental scratches that he inflicts on himself by randomly moving his hands. Trimming the nails of children in the maternity hospital is strictly prohibited. This procedure is performed at home after discharge.

How to dress a baby from 0 to 6 months

In the first six months of life, children grow and gain weight very quickly. This is especially noticeable in the first three months of life. Some clothes they don’t even have time to wear. Do not buy a lot of clothes in the smallest size. In a couple of weeks, she will be small for a child. How much clothing is needed for the little ones?

It depends on how much the parents will use disposable diapers. In the case of their round-the-clock use, the child has to change clothes infrequently (1-2 times a day). Very comfortable for children in this situation are bodysuits, sliders with a breast and slips. Children in such clothes do not interfere with extra folds and elastic bands. It is very convenient for mothers to change the diaper without undressing the baby completely. You can only unfasten a few buttons between the legs of the baby.

If a mother prefers to do without diapers, then she has to change clothes very often (10-20 times a day). In this case, it is more convenient to purchase more sliders, panties and shirts. Some families prefer swaddling clothes. Then you need to stock up on a sufficient number of diapers (both thinner, cotton, and fleece) &mdash the bill can go into dozens.

It is not necessary to wear a cap at home. As a rule, children do not freeze at home with their heads uncovered. You can put on a baby cap after bathing. For walks, you usually need to wear a thin hat under a warmer one, especially in cool weather. For this purpose, a cotton helmet is perfect, which will cover the baby’s neck. It has no strings, which give children a lot of inconvenience.

Wardrobe for children from 6 months to 1 year

In the second half of the first year, a lot of very important changes take place in a baby’s life. He learns to sit, stand up, crawl and walk. Children spend a lot of time on the floor, exploring the world around them. He is teething, which is usually accompanied by profuse salivation. At this age, children are introduced to various complementary foods. All these events affect the fact that children often have to change clothes.

From 6 to 12 months, long-sleeved T-shirts or blouses are most comfortable for babies. It depends on the room temperature at home. If earlier the child wore sliders, now it is better to replace them with panties. They are easier to get up and walk in. When the baby starts to get up, you need to take care of purchasing the first orthopedic shoes.

What kind of outerwear a child will have depends primarily on the season. The weather tends to change quickly in one direction or another. In order for the baby to always feel comfortable, it is good to have a small blanket or blanket with you on a walk so that you can wrap the baby up when it gets cold and vice versa.

Features of the physical and mental development of the child from birth to 1 month of life.

Free classes with a speech therapist
Free ICT course for children

During the first month of life, a child quickly adapts to new conditions for him. The muscular apparatus improves, trains, the posture of the embryo disappears, various emotions appear. It is interesting for parents to observe the development of a child from birth to 1 month of life, because even in such a short period of time the baby manages not only to change outwardly, but also to learn a lot.

Physical Development

Every mother is looking forward to the birth of her child, whether it be a boy or a girl. Care and development of a newborn in the first month of life play a big role. If everything is done correctly, the child quickly adapts to the world around him, his body gets used to working outside the mother’s womb.

In the first 12 hours after birth, the baby is vaccinated against hepatitis. During the first week – BCG (tuberculosis vaccine).

Before the age of one month, the child’s circulatory system is rebuilt. The liver and brain are actively supplied with blood, the immune system begins to produce immunoglobulin. The kidneys are already working at full strength, but are still immature for up to six months. The respiratory system of the baby removes carbon dioxide from the body.

Normally, by the end of the month, the child already confidently controls his hands. He can put his hand up to his face. Lying on his back, makes attempts to raise his head. Some active babies try to carry out this movement even lying on their backs.

At the time of birth, you can notice small pimples on the baby’s face – milia. They pass on their own. The fontanel becomes dense. In rare cases, it overgrows only by the year.

The skin on the fingers of a newborn may peel off – this is a natural process. It can be moisturized with baby cream, milk. Mom should control the healing of the navel. It should be covered with a crust and not bleed. Treat it with hydrogen peroxide, brilliant green or a weak solution of potassium permanganate.

The sense organs also change. By the third week of life, the baby begins to attach importance to different sounds. He already reacts to the speech of mom and dad, recognizes their voices among strangers. During this period, the baby focuses his eyes on stationary objects. By the fourth week of life, the movements of the eyeballs become coordinated and smooth.

Sleep, weight gain and height norms

The child’s main daily routine includes sleep and breaks for feeding. Waking periods are still short. The baby sleeps in the frog position – lying on his back, arms bent at the elbows, legs spread apart. There are several stages of sleep:

  • Deep — the baby is relaxed, breathes evenly, eyes are closed;
  • Shallow – the newborn behaves restlessly;
  • Drowsy – the child half-closes his eyes;
  • Wakefulness – the baby is active and mobile.

There are two options for height and weight. From Russian pediatricians, they look like this:

Indicator Lower limit Upper limit
Weight of boys, kg 3. 6 5.1
Weight of girls, kg 3.6 4.7
Boys height, cm 51.2 56.5
Girls height, cm 50.3 56.1
Boys head circumference, cm 35.5 39.1
Head circumference of girls, cm 35.0 38.1
Boys chest circumference, cm 34.1 38.9
Chest circumference of girls, cm 34.0 38.1

The World Health Organization adheres to several other indicators:

Indicator Lower limit Upper limit
Weight of boys, kg 3.4 5.8
Weight of girls, kg 3.2 5.5
Boys height, cm 50.8 58.6
Girls height, cm 49. 8 57.6
Boys head circumference, cm 34.9 39.6
Head circumference of girls, cm 34.2 38.9

But you should not rely on these weight gain tables in the first month of a baby’s life. They are calculated on averages and do not take into account individual characteristics of development. In the first two weeks of life, the baby adds 150 g. For a month, the increase is approximately 600 g. 2 cm is added to his height.

Feeding basics

The main food for a newborn is breast milk. Some women have little of it, but you can try to restore lactation. For this child, they are often applied to the chest at the first sign of the baby’s anxiety. This mode is called “feeding on demand.” On average, up to 12 applications per day.

Mom needs to control nipple latch. The child should take the entire areola. Some babies get tired of suckling quickly and fall asleep. They need to be lightly patted on the cheeks or change the chest. After feeding, the baby is helped to burp in the following ways:

  • the child is placed upright and rested on the shoulder of an adult;
  • help lay face down on mom’s lap;

The first months of a child’s life are accompanied by colic and bloating. This is normal, as the gastrointestinal tract is only adapting to work. You can alleviate the condition of the baby with a massage: the tummy should be stroked clockwise (but do not rub with pressure). You can give the newborn dill water, a Sab Simplex suspension, or another remedy for colic.

Mental development

Young parents do not always have a good idea of what a child should be able to do at 1 month of life (it doesn’t matter if it’s a girl or a boy). Let’s talk about it.

A baby at this age is rarely awake, preferring to sleep and eat. There is a grasping reflex. If you run a finger or other object across the palm, the child will instinctively grab it. If you stroke his cheek, he will turn his head – this is a search reflex, the appearance of which is due to the instinct of searching for food.

Passing a nipple or finger around the mouth will purse the baby’s lips and begin to imitate suckling. Lying on his stomach, he is already trying to make movements similar to swimming.

It is worth remembering the individual development of the child. In 1 month he should be able to do not so much. The baby makes separate sounds (“k”, “g”) – this stage of speech development is called cooing. Crying attracts the attention of parents, shows emotional reactions, for example, smiles at mom and dad, mumbles happily.

Basic skills and abilities by the first month of life:

  • Cooing;
  • Eye fixation;
  • Development of vision;
  • Reaction to sounds;
  • Head hold.

We briefly analyzed what a child of 1 month of life should be able to do. During this period of development, any deviations from the norm cause panic among parents. But do not immediately worry, as small discrepancies are quite acceptable. If you are very worried, consult your pediatrician.

At this age, there is no point in actively developing the baby, because all he needs for now is to be with his mother, get breastfeeding, good sleep, and enough time in the fresh air.

Newborn Care Tips

Proper care of your baby is very important for their health. Therefore, it is important to know and be able to care for the baby at home immediately after discharge from the maternity hospital. The period from birth to a year is very important for a child, because it is at this time that he adapts to the outside world. Proper care, including balanced feeding, adequate sleep, fresh air, hygiene procedures will help your baby grow healthy, strong and strong. Parents must follow all the rules of hygiene of the child.

Daily child care includes several procedures. If possible, it is desirable to conduct them at the same time. It all starts with the washing of the hands of the one who toilets the baby.

Get your little one used to the morning toilet . Place your baby on the changing table. Start by washing. Pour boiled water at room temperature into a separate container. Slightly dampen a cotton swab and run it along the eyelid from the outer edge to the inner. Clear each eye. If dirt appears on the surface of the auricle, remove it with a cotton swab and oil. If necessary, clean the baby’s nose with thin cotton flagella. When washing, be sure to use separate swabs for each eye. Clean your baby’s ears only in visible areas. When cleaning the ears and nose, it is very convenient to use baby oil, as it helps to easily remove impurities. It is useful to undress the baby and put it on the tummy for 3-5 minutes. Such air baths are necessary for the skin and health of the baby. Then treat all the wrinkles on the baby’s body with a moisturizing baby cream or milk. Dress up your baby.

The main task of a mother is to properly care for a newborn, and an important part of caring for a newborn is keeping the skin clean and healthy. Therefore, you need to carefully examine all the folds on the skin – if cracks and diaper rash have appeared somewhere.

A newborn needs to be washed after each diaper change, it is recommended to bathe the baby every day. After all water procedures, you should lubricate with cream powder those places where diaper rash is possible.

Every used diaper should be washed and ironed. Diapers, like all children’s underwear, are washed only with baby soap or special washing powders designed for washing children’s clothes.

Do not use laundry soap, washing powders and pastes, as the smallest particles of these detergents left on the laundry after a normal rinse can cause allergic skin reactions. The number of rinses depends on how clean the water remains and how soft and sensitive the baby’s skin is.

How to properly wash your hair?

Pediatricians recommend washing a newborn’s head before removing it from the water.

Lather a small amount of baby shampoo in the palm of your hand and gently lather your hair. It will gently cleanse the scalp and help prevent the formation of dry crusts.

If dry scabs do appear, before bathing, you can lubricate the newborn’s head with baby oil, then wash the hair with a mild shampoo and, at the end of the water treatment, comb out the scales with a fine-toothed comb designed specifically for babies. The procedure will have to be repeated several times to get rid of the problem. Be sure to consult your doctor if the crusts still appear after this.

After bathing, the baby’s hair is not dried, but only lightly blotted with a towel.

Should I cut my baby’s nails?

Mandatory. Newborns often accidentally scratch themselves with sharp nails. But remember that children do not like this procedure. Therefore, it is better to do a manicure when the baby falls asleep. Use special children’s scissors with blunt ends. The nails on the hands are cut in a circle, on the legs – in a straight line.

Should I swaddle my baby?

It depends on the baby. Pediatricians recommend swaddling your baby before bed so that he does not accidentally scratch himself and wake up from his own movements. But if your little one feels anxious while swaddling, you can leave him alone and use a sleeping bag for babies.

Baby walk rules:

The first walk should not exceed 15-20 minutes. Frost, strong wind, heat and direct sunlight should be avoided. You need to lengthen the walk time gradually, adding 5-10 minutes daily, so that by the end of the week you can bring the duration of the walk to 1 hour. After that, in the summer, the duration of the walk can be increased arbitrarily, depending on the weather conditions and the well-being of the mother and baby.

In winter, the duration of the walk can be increased to 1.5-2.5 hours, and if the frost is below -10 degrees, you can refrain from walking until it warms up. Winter frosty air encourages baby to sleep longer, so the time for a walk can be used for a big daytime nap.

If mom has time, then walks are organized 2 times a day for 1-2 hours, if her time is limited, then one long walk is enough.

In a big city, it is better to go outside with a stroller once a day, but for several hours, so that you can walk in the park, and not walk along the highway three times a day for half an hour.

If you are already using a stroller, it must be high enough. In a low stroller, the child is at the level of the exhaust pipes of cars.

Dress your baby for a walk according to the rule: “how you are + 1 layer”

In the first four weeks, your baby’s life is not limited to sleep, crying and eating. If you carefully observe the child, you will notice how he reacts to external stimuli: the touch of his mother, the sudden switching on of the light in the room or the noise behind the wall. This is an indicator that all the senses of the newborn are actively working.

Touching, tactile contact with objects is one of the first ways a child has to know the world. Therefore, it is so important to make the surrounding reality friendly: to choose comfortable clothes for a newborn in the first month of life and then, a comfortable bed, to accompany every day of his life with soft and gentle touches.

Already at the beginning of the 1st month of life, you may be lucky to see the baby’s first smile. This will not yet be a meaningful reaction to the outside world, but a manifestation of reflexes. A real smile will appear only by 6-8 weeks of life.

In the first year, you will communicate quite closely with the local pediatrician.

Therefore, it is very important that you trust the specialist and follow his advice.

The frequency of examinations of a healthy baby depends on age – the younger the child, the more often he should be examined by a doctor. A separate group consists of children with any disease.

Their doctor’s appointments are scheduled individually.

Upon reaching the 1st month, you and your baby will be invited to the first scheduled check-up at the polyclinic. From now on, such visits to the doctor will become regular. It is best to do this on Healthy Children’s Day – every Tuesday of the week.

Baby skin care

Of course, proper care of a child under one year old requires skills and knowledge from the mother. Especially caring for a newborn baby. Let’s look at the main rules for caring for a child up to a year old at home.

Carrying out procedures.

The various newborn care activities are divided into those that take place every day and those that take place every week. But if necessary, then of course any procedures that the baby needs can be carried out more often.

Newborn daily care.

It is necessary to perform every day in the sequence of procedures for a newborn given below.

Wash your baby’s face with boiled water (warm), you can wipe your face with your hand, if you want, use ordinary cotton balls for this. Spend at the same time wiping the child’s ears. Treat the baby’s eyes also with cotton balls pre-soaked in boiled water. If you see that the child’s eye has become more dirty than usual, then you need to use a solution of furacilin. There is an opinion that you can wipe your eyes with strong tea. But if you want to wash your child’s eyes with tea, then you must make sure that there are no tea leaves on the cotton ball, as they can irritate the eyes. Flush only from the outer corner of the eye to the inner corner. Be sure to use a new cotton ball for each eye.

Skin folds can be lubricated with vegetable or vaseline oil, only sterile.

Treat the umbilical wound. By the way, the smaller the baby, the more often it should be washed away, especially after urination and defecation. Wash your baby only with running water, and not in a basin or in a bath, because otherwise it can lead to infection in the urinary tract.

How should I wash my baby?

Firstly, girls need to be washed from front to back, washing with the hand on which the stream of water is directed (warm). Before you start washing the baby, you must definitely check the temperature of the water, therefore, first you need to substitute your hand and only after this child. After the washing procedure on the changing table, you need to dry the baby’s skin with blotting movements using a clean diaper. After that, the skin folds should be smeared with a cotton swab previously moistened with sterile vegetable oil; baby cream can also be used for these purposes.

Carry out daily care for a child up to one year old in the morning.

Weekly care for a child up to one year old.

Clean the nasal passages with cotton swabs. It would be better to prepare them from sterile cotton wool. A cotton flagellum should be moistened in sterile vegetable and vaseline oil. Insert the flagellum into the nasal passage to a depth of no more than one cm, clean from the inside out with rotational movements. Clean both the left and right nasal passages with different flagella. When caring for a child under one year old, do not overdo it. That is, you do not need to perform such procedures too often. Do not use dense objects for these purposes, including matches and cotton buds. After all, they can injure the mucous membrane. Clean the external auditory canals with rotational movements using cotton flagella, only dry.

It is not necessary to wipe the mucous membranes in the oral cavity, because they can also be easily injured.

Trim your baby’s nails. It is most convenient to use scissors with rounded ends or nail clippers.

Preparing to become a mother, lovely women, of course, plan what purchases they need to make even before the baby is born. So, in addition to the “dowry” of the crumbs, you should also buy items that deserve even more of your attention. These items include “newborn first aid kit” . Of course, you can buy such a first-aid kit already assembled, but still, most mothers conclude that the items in the standard set do not meet their needs.

Of course, when compiling a list of necessary medicines and hygiene products, something is usually forgotten or, on the contrary, some items turn out to be superfluous. But do not be discouraged, because this is absolutely normal, since mom cannot foresee everything in advance.

In order to properly care for a child up to a year old, you need to stock up on the following items.

Products used for antiseptic treatment of the skin.

To treat an umbilical wound you will need 3% hydrogen peroxide, 5% brilliant green.

You can buy a solution of potassium permanganate in finished form, you can also make it from crystals. To do this, dilute several crystals in water so that the solution acquires a soft pink color. A solution of potassium permanganate should not be dark red, if you make a concentrated solution of potassium permanganate, you can “burn” the baby’s delicate skin.

Purchase sterile cotton and gauze pads. With the help of them, treat the nose of the crumbs, ears, any wounds and inflammations that appear on the skin.

Although it is more convenient to clean the baby’s ears with cotton swabs, it is still dangerous. Therefore, get cotton flagella.

You may also need chamomile for external use, as it is usually added to the water when bathing the crumbs so that the umbilical wound heals faster.

For internal use, fennel or dill seeds must be purchased. After all, they have a beneficial effect on the body of crumbs with excess gas formation.

You will need an enema and a gas tube. They are used when the crumbs have problems with the intestines, also with gases, by the way, which in the very first months of the crumbs especially bother him and his parents, since the baby is constantly crying.

You will also need a pipette to drop the spout, peephole, or to apply peroxide to the umbilical wound.

Thermometers.

Your home should have three thermometers: to measure the air temperature in the room, body temperature and water temperature.

Of course, every home has an ordinary body thermometer. Most often it is a classic mercury thermometer, which has been used since Soviet times. Although some mothers are now using new modern electronic thermometers, which are distinguished by both the speed of measurement and their safety.

Medicines for the child.

Remember that you should not buy a lot of drugs in advance. After all, a baby for one month can have strong immunity and not catch a cold, not suffer from allergies, and so on. But if you still want to make sure, then you need to make at least the minimum “reserves” of medicines. Can be purchased as an antipyretic, based on paracetamol (in the form of suppositories or syrup).

INTRODUCTION

When you see a small child, caressing words come to mind: “Baby, hare, sweetie…”. How many different words we come up with for our children! Of course, motherhood is the greatest happiness. But also the biggest responsibility.

The child is in dire need of care, love and devotion from adults, primarily from the mother. And, probably, every parent doubts the sufficiency of their knowledge and experience to ensure adequate care and upbringing of the child. Of course, a huge number of articles, reference books, and manuals have been published and continue to be published on this topic. It is worth adding the abundance of information received from friends, relatives, doctors. Unfortunately, in this “heap of knowledge” it is sometimes difficult to separate the “wheat from the chaff”.

Without claiming to be the “ultimate truth”, the authors of this guide have tried to present the issues of child care from a medical point of view, therefore, it is primarily intended for students of medical schools studying in the specialty “pediatrics”. But parents will also be able to figure out for themselves how to deal with some of the complex issues of child care when reading the manual.

Do not forget that proper child care is a prerequisite for its harmonious development. It must be borne in mind that the smaller the child, the more important general hygienic measures for his health. Care for young children has a number of features, the knowledge of which is mandatory for the pediatrician and for parents.

Chapter 1

CARE FOR HEALTHY YOUNG CHILDREN

Newborn

Newborn primary toileting is to be performed in the delivery room by specially trained medical personnel only. Strict adherence to the rules of asepsis and antisepsis is mandatory. For each child in the delivery room, you must have:

• An individual set of sterile linen (blanket, 3 calico diapers), which is stored in a special thermostat or heated cabinet.

• Individual sterile set for primary treatment by a nurse in the maternity ward of a newborn, which contains 2 Kocher clamps, a Rogovin clamp and forceps for applying it, a silk ligature, a triangular gauze folded 4 times, cotton sticks, pipettes, cotton balls, one-time oilcloth or paper centimeter tape 60 cm long and 1 cm wide, oilcloth “bracelets”, a rubber can or a pear.

The midwife, wearing sterile gloves, receives the baby and places it on a special sterile metal tray covered with a sterile diaper. Later, with the help of a rubber balloon, a disposable aspirator or a catheter connected to an electric suction, the mouth and nose of the newborn are cleaned from the contents.

After the end of the pulsation on the umbilical cord, at a distance of 10-15 cm from the umbilical ring, two Kocher clamps are applied with a distance of 2-3 cm between them. The surface of the umbilical cord between the clamps is wiped with 96 ° alcohol and sterile scissors are crossed between the clamps. The cut surface is cauterized with 5% iodine solution.

Immediately after an uncomplicated delivery, the baby is laid out on the mother’s stomach. This is usually done in two steps.

At the first stage , the baby is laid out on the mother’s stomach and covered with a sterile sheet before the end of the umbilical cord pulsation. After the end of the pulsation and the primary treatment of the umbilical cord, as well as rubbing, the child returns to the upper abdomen of the mother again. To do this, the mother’s chest and abdomen are wiped with sterile swabs with saline ( second stage ). The child, lying on his stomach, is held by the mother’s hand and covered with a sterile sheet or a sheet and a blanket. The search behavior of the child is gradually manifested – sucking movements, head turns, crawling movements of the limbs. When these reflex movements appear, the mother can direct the baby’s movements to the breast and nipple. The child should independently capture the nipple and areola with vigorous head movements that lift the chest. He captures his chest with his mouth wide open, placing his lowered tongue under it.

Being at the mother’s breast 30-45 minutes after birth, having experienced severe birth stress, the child restores connection with the past. He again hears his mother’s heartbeat, her voice, finds a warm home.

Skin-to-skin contact is very important, since the tactile analyzer is the leading one in newborns and is most developed in the womb. It contributes to the formation of close relationships between mother and child, stimulates mother’s lactation, has a positive effect on the further development of the psyche and emotional sphere of the child, and also enhances the feeling of motherhood.

Eye contact is also important in early breastfeeding. The face of the mother or father, which he sees for the first time, will remain in the memory of the baby for life.

If sucking at the first skin contact does not take place, then it is not advisable to keep the baby at the breast for more than 1.5 hours, he will sleep.

It is imperative to show the newborn to the mother, paying her attention to the sex of the child and congenital anomalies, if any.

After the first feeding, the baby is washed under running water (water temperature 37 – 38 °C), blotted with a sterile diaper (this step is skipped if there are contraindications) and transferred to the changing table, heated from above by a source of radiant heat. At a distance of 0.2 – 0.5 cm from the umbilical ring, a metal or plastic Rogovin staple is applied to the umbilical cord using a special clamp (a silk ligature is allowed instead of the Rogovin staple). The rest of the umbilical cord is cut off with sterile scissors. Using sticks with cotton wool, the umbilical cord stump is lubricated with 5% KMnO 9 solution0994 4 , apply a sterile triangular folded gauze dressing. Cotton balls, abundantly moistened with sterile vaseline or vegetable oil from individual 30 ml vials, treat the skin, removing excess primordial lubrication, mucus, blood (complete removal of primordial lubrication is not necessary). The surface of the folds is processed in a certain sequence (cervical, axillary, inguinal, knee, elbow).

Prevention of gonorrhea. Using pipettes and cotton balls, instill 2 drops of a 30% solution of sodium sulfacyl (albucid) into the eyes. After 2 hours, the procedure is repeated. Additionally, girls are instilled with 2 drops of the same solution or 2% solution of AgNO 3 into the genital slit.

The child is weighed in a sterile diaper, body length, chest and head circumference are measured using a disposable centimeter tape according to the general rules for anthropometry (methodology see p. 29). Oilcloth “bracelets” are fixed to the child’s arms, where the mother’s surname, first name, patronymic, date and hour of birth, gender, birth history number are indicated. The baby is swaddled (method see p. 19) and sent to the children’s department or the ward of joint stay with the mother, usually no later than 1 hour after birth.

Care of the umbilical cord and umbilical wound. Processing of the umbilical residue is carried out only with clean hands, strictly observing the rules of asepsis. After 12-18 hours after the birth of the child, the gauze bandage from the umbilical cord is removed and is no longer applied. “Stump” daily, until falling off (3 – 5th day), is treated with 96 ° alcohol and 5% KMnO 9 solution0994 4 . After the umbilical cord falls off, the umbilical wound is treated daily, until it is epithelized (usually 7-10 days). To do this, wash the wound from the center to the periphery with a sterile stick soaked in a 3% solution of H 2 O 2 , then dry the wound with another sterile stick. The wound is treated with a new sterile stick with a 5% solution of KMnO 4 or 1 – 2% solution of brilliant green. Since aniline dyes paint over the area of the umbilical ring and thus complicate the timely diagnosis of inflammatory diseases of the navel, it is recommended to treat 96 ° alcohol (a few drops are instilled into the umbilical wound).

For the prevention of purulent-inflammatory diseases of the skin and navel in newborns, the drug “Lifuzol” (“Statizol”) is used, the active ingredient of which is furatsilin and sea buckthorn oil. The drug is available in aerosol packaging, film-forming.

Newborn care. During the first 2 to 3 days after discharge from the maternity hospital, the child is visited by a pediatrician and a visiting nurse. In the first month, the doctor examines the child 2 more times. At the age of one month, a full anthropometric examination is performed in the polyclinic with an assessment of physical development, examination by all specialists.

According to the order of the Ministry of Health and Social Development of Russia dated April 28, 2007 No. 307, examination by a pediatrician is then carried out once a quarter in a polyclinic, where anthropometry, assessment of physical and psychomotor development, as well as examination by other specialists are carried out. Thus, a healthy child in the first year of life is examined by a pediatrician 6 times.

By the time of discharge from the maternity hospital (3-5 days of life), a healthy child should suckle well, daily weight gain is 20-30 g, stools up to 5 times a day, mushy, yellow in color, sour smell, skin integuments clean, slight icterus may remain (remains of physiological jaundice), umbilical wound without discharge, epithelialized.

Daily care of a newborn in a maternity hospital. Daily care of a newborn is carried out by a nurse on a special changing table, which is covered with a blanket, oilcloth, and a clean diaper on top. Good lighting is required, the air temperature is 20 – 22 ° C.

Always wash your hands with warm water and a brush for 2 minutes before going to the toilet.

Daily care of a newborn includes the following items: measuring temperature and body weight, caring for the umbilical cord and umbilical wound, toileting the skin and mucous membranes.

Determination of body weight (technique see p. 30) is carried out daily at the same time, usually before the first feeding.

Body temperature measurement (technique see p. 114) in healthy newborns is carried out 2 times a day – in the morning and in the evening. The results of weighing and measuring temperature are recorded in the history of the development of the child.

When caring for skin and mucous membranes pay attention to the condition of the skin folds, after each act of defecation, the child is washed, the nose, eyes, and, if necessary, the external auditory canal are cleaned (see the technique on p. 13).

The oral cavity of healthy newborns is not wiped, as the oral mucosa is dry and easily injured.

In cases where mother and child are cohabitated (currently admitted), the nurse provides training to the mother in care techniques.

Infant and young children

If you are expecting a baby in your family, you need to think in advance about the place where he will be and provide the necessary furniture for his comfortable stay.

Baby corner. For an infant in an apartment or room, it is necessary to allocate a separate corner, using the brightest part of the room for this, which must, if possible, be freed from unnecessary items (carpets, paths, armchairs, etc.). In the room where the child is, there should not be flowers and other plants. It is recommended to curtain the window with a curtain only in the upper third. The temperature in the room of a newborn child should be 20 – 22 ° C, from the second month of life 18 – 20 ° C. In the children’s room do not smoke and do not accept guests. It is recommended to carry out wet cleaning daily, airing is carried out for at least one hour 3-5 times a day, best during sleep. In summer, windows must be open all day and all night. The window should be tightened with gauze or mesh so that mosquitoes and flies do not fly in. In the cold season, a window is opened for ventilation, first during the absence of the child, then with him. Air flow and direct sunlight should not fall directly on the crib.

Place a cot, changing table, bedside table or shelf for care items in the baby’s corner. The table is used for swaddling, and later for massage and gymnastics. The table is covered with a soft flannel blanket, on top of which there is an oilcloth. The bed can be either wooden or metal, with side walls that allow air to pass freely. Instead of a crib, you can use a wicker cradle, a cradle, or, in extreme cases, a stroller. A stroller cannot replace a bed, since its walls do not allow air to pass through well, in addition, dust remains on the stroller after walking. It is not necessary to hang the bed with a canopy or curtain, as this disrupts the ventilation of the air and deprives the child of light and the surrounding space. The crib should be placed away from the heating system, as too dry, warm air causes dryness of the mucous membranes of the nose and mouth, and sometimes overheating.

The child needs a firm mattress, evenly flat and tightly stuffed, which can be made independently from cotton wool, a blanket. Coconut-filled mattresses also work well, you can use horsehair and sea grass. Do not use down and feather mattresses, as this can cause overheating, allergization with down components is possible, and due to the softness of the material, deformation of the skeleton. The top of the mattress can be covered with oilcloth. Currently, more often the mattress is not fitted, and the oilcloth is simply placed on top. A pillow is not needed for a newborn, you can use a folded diaper or a flat pillow, such a pillow adapts to the shape of the head and does not restrict the airways. If necessary (prevention of regurgitation), you can raise the head end of the crib. When laying the child to sleep, it is advisable to periodically change his position.

Bedding should be aired daily and oilcloth should be washed with soap or a disinfectant solution. Starting from the second half of the year, when the child begins to crawl, move on all fours and take the first steps, in order to protect the child and limit his movements, it is convenient to use the playpen. Mesh and rack arenas are produced. The area of the arena is usually one or one and a half square meters, the bottom of it must be covered with something soft so that the child does not feel pain when crawling on his knees. The child’s favorite toys are placed inside the arena.

Daily examination and toileting of the child. After discharge from the maternity hospital, care is taken by the mother in a specially designated corner of the children’s room, on the changing table, which should be covered with a blanket, oilcloth, and on top with a clean diaper. Good lighting is required, the air temperature is 20 – 22 ° C.

Always wash hands with warm water, a brush and soap for 2 minutes before toileting an infant. After laying out the undressed child on a pre-treated changing table, he is carefully examined, paying special attention to the umbilical wound, as well as to the places most dangerous for the occurrence of diaper rash (behind the ears, neck, axillary, inguinal folds). The eyes are washed with boiled water, in the direction from the outer corner to the inner. Separate sterile cotton swabs are used for each eye, first wet, then dry.

The toilet of the nasal passages is carried out in order to remove dry crusts, mucus, milk, which can get there when spitting up. The nose is cleaned with cotton flagella soaked in sterile vaseline oil, which are introduced into the nasal passage by 1-1.5 cm with rotational movements. To remove the crusts that form in the baby’s nose, first, warm vaseline oil is instilled into each nostril, and after 15 minutes the nose is cleaned with cotton flagella.

Cleansing of the nasal passages is carried out alternately, with different flagella (Fig. 1). To prepare a cotton flagellum, take a small piece of cotton, pinch it with two fingers of the left hand and rotate it between the thumb and forefinger of the right until a thin, dense flagellum is obtained. To make it elastic, it is better to roll the cotton wool with wet hands.

Fig. 1. Nasal toilet

2. Toilet of the ear passages

It is strictly forbidden to use matches, sticks and other objects with cotton wool wrapped around them for the toilet of the nasal passages.

The auricles are wiped with a well-wrung out damp cotton swab dipped in boiled water.

Once every 2-3 weeks clean the external auditory canals with wet and then dry cotton flagella (Fig. 2).

After the child begins to actively move (8 – 9months), when toileting the eyes, nasal passages and auricles, it is often necessary to fix the child.

The face, neck, hands are washed with boiled water using a cotton ball. The skin of infants is very delicate and thin. It is easily damaged by the slightest impact. Microbes freely penetrate through damaged skin, and the child’s body is not yet able to actively counteract them. Therefore, even individual pustules, redness and skin lesions can lead to generalization of the infection in a short time. In this regard, any skin diseases in young children require medical advice. The child’s skin is carefully examined and wiped with a sterile cotton swab dipped in sterile vaseline or boiled vegetable oil. You can also use baby cream to wipe the skin. Particular attention is paid to natural folds, which are wiped in the following order: behind the ear, cervical, axillary, elbow, wrist, popliteal, inguinal, buttocks.

Fig. 3. Baby washing technique

Wash children with warm running water at a temperature of 36 – 38 °C (Fig. 3). During washing, the child is held on weight, usually in the right hand, and washed away with the left. In case of severe contamination, washing is carried out with a soapy hand.

Girls are kept face up when washing and must be washed from front to back, this is done in order to prevent infection of the urinary tract with fecal matter (Fig. 4). Then, with careful blotting movements, the child is dried. Wash the child at the end of the morning toilet and after each act of defecation. Children with sensitive skin, with a tendency to diaper rash, are recommended to wash after each urination.

Fig. 4. Peculiarities of washing girls

Toilet of the genital organs in girls is carried out in the presence of vaginal discharge. The cotton wool is moistened in a solution of furacilin 1: 5000 or KMnO 4 1: 8000 and gently wipe the genital gap. The accumulation of smegma between the foreskin and the glans penis in boys should not be removed, as the mucosa can be damaged. With diaper rash and maceration of the penis, local baths with a solution of KMnO 4 1:8000.

The child’s nails are trimmed with small scissors at least once a week. Scissors are pre-treated with cologne or alcohol. To make the procedure less unpleasant, it can be likened to a game – to tell something about each finger. On the hands, the nails are cut in an arcuate manner, on the legs – with a straight cut (for the prevention of an ingrown nail). Nails are cut over an unfolded sheet of paper so as not to scatter them; trimmings should not fall into the child’s face and onto the bed. Hair cutting is a very unpleasant procedure for children, so it must be done carefully, using a typewriter or sharp scissors, after cutting, you should wash your hair with baby soap or shampoo.

Oral care for children. Before the appearance of the first teeth, the child’s oral cavity, without special indications, is not processed. However, already after the appearance of the first teeth (6 – 7 months), the child should get used to the hygienic skills of treating the oral cavity. Up to 1.5 – 2 years, this responsibility lies with the mother. It is recommended to wipe the first teeth with a cotton swab dipped in water. Special brushes are also available for sale, which are put on the finger, moistened in water and wipe the teeth. After a year, it is recommended to use children’s pastes that are not dangerous for a child to swallow (Children’s Pearls, Junior, Berry, Pinocchio, Winnie the Pooh, etc. ).

It is necessary to teach a child to brush their own teeth from 2.5 – 3 years, after the complete formation of the milk bite. The skills acquired at this age are retained for the rest of life. It must be remembered that due to the peculiarities of the development of psychomotor functions (up to about 6 years), the child is not able to clean his teeth in a quality manner.

When choosing a toothbrush at an early age, some rules should be followed – the brush should be small in order to freely manipulate it in the mouth, the length of its head should not exceed 20 – 25 mm, and the width 8 – 10 mm. The bristles of a children’s toothbrush should not be very hard, so as not to injure the delicate and easily injured mucous membrane.

It must be remembered that a toothbrush is an item for individual use, therefore it should never be used by anyone except a child, including close relatives.

Special children’s pastes are used for brushing teeth. In the case of using fluoride-containing pastes, a small amount (the size of a pea) is squeezed onto the toothbrush. With a larger volume and constant use, the risk of fluorosis increases.

Learning how to brush your baby’s teeth takes about six months. First, the mother shows how it is done on herself. Brushing your teeth in front of a mirror speeds up the learning process. In the future, parents should carefully monitor the implementation of this procedure by the child.

The most effective oral care regimen is brushing your teeth in the morning and in the evening after meals, with a mandatory mouth rinse after each meal.

When brushing teeth, brushing is usually carried out along the axis of the tooth, capturing part of the gum and simultaneously massaging the soft tissues (Fig. 5).

In order to clean your teeth well, you need about 300 paired (up – down) movements with a toothbrush. Clean successively all surfaces of the dentition: labial, lingual, chewing. The whole procedure should take at least 3-5 minutes.

Fig. 5. Teeth cleaning technique

According to dentists, along with proper oral care, it is important to limit carbohydrates in food, which, as a result of processing in the oral cavity, change the acidic composition, which contributes to the dissolution of tooth tissues and the formation of cavities. In addition to limiting carbohydrates, it is especially important not to consume sugar in dissolved form (tea, compote, etc.), not to allow the use of flour products and sweets in between main meals, as well as the categorical exclusion of sweets before bedtime.

Thrush (candidiasis of the mucous membranes) occurs on the mucous membrane of the oral cavity (cheeks, palate, gums, tongue) in the form of multiple dot plaques resembling semolina or curdled milk located on a hyperemic background. Plaque is easily removed with a gauze swab, exposing a moist, erosive, painful surface, which makes it difficult to move the tongue during sucking and swallowing. The following solutions are used to treat thrush: 1% gentian violet solution, 2% soda solution, 20% borax solution with glycerin, nystatin, ascorbic acid irrigation. Processing of the affected mucous membranes is carried out 3-4 times a day, before feeding. With a sterile stick with a cotton swab dipped in one of the solutions, the elements of the thrush are removed with careful rotational movements without pressure.

Bathing a child. Daily bathing of the newborn is started 2-3 days after the umbilical cord has fallen off, after the umbilical wound has healed. Bathing is recommended before the penultimate feeding. A hygienic bath is carried out up to 6 months of age daily, in the second half of the year – every other day, from a year to two – 2 times a week, after two years – 1 time per week. In the first month, it is preferable to use boiled water for a hygienic bath. For children with an unhealed umbilical wound, a solution of potassium permanganate is added to boiled water (the color of the water is light purple). With soap, the child is bathed no more than 1 – 2 times a week. More frequent use of soap can cause skin irritation. The duration of the bath for children of the first year is usually 5 – 7 minutes, the air temperature in the room is 20 – 22 ° C, the water temperature for children of the first half of the year is 36.5 – 37.0 ° C, for the rest – 36 ° C.

The optimal temperature can also be estimated by a simple “folk” method: dip your own elbow into the water. If the water temperature is pleasantly warm for your elbow, it will be good for your baby too.

The baby bath is washed with hot water, soap and a brush (if bathing is carried out in a children’s institution, the bath is additionally treated with a disinfectant solution) and rinsed with hot water. Before bathing, clothes for the child are prepared. It must be folded in the order in which it will be used after the bath. It is recommended to warm up the laundry, for which it can be put on a rubber or electric heating pad. The bath is filled with water so that the child can be immersed up to the shoulders (Fig. 6).

One diaper folded in four is placed on the bottom of the tub. The child is carefully immersed in the bath, supporting the buttocks with the left hand, the head and back with the right hand, while the child’s head is on the forearm of the bather, and the back is in the palm of the hand (see Fig. 6, and ). With the right hand, you can hold the child in another way: with a brush, the bather covers the right shoulder of the child so that the neck and head of the child rest on the forearm of the bather. After that, the left hand is released. With the free left hand, the child is washed with a special terry or flannel mitten or sponge (see Fig. 6, b, c ). The scalp is washed last, lathered in the direction from the forehead to the back of the head (see Fig. 6, g ). Do not wash your face with bath water. After bathing, the child is taken out of the bath with his back up, poured with water 1-2 ° C lower than the water in the bath. The bathed child is placed on an unfolded towel or sheet, wiped with blotting movements, while only the part that is being wiped remains open, the rest of the body remains closed to prevent cooling.

Caring for a newborn baby – Medical Handbook

Having a baby is both a joy and a great responsibility.

  • reaction to sound, light, movement – is expressed in turning the head or moving the gaze towards the stimulus;
  • crying as the main way of communication – they show the need for food, affection, cleanliness, sleep;

  • search reflex – with its help, newborns find the breast or bottle with their lips and provide themselves with food;
  • sucking reflex – the child independently obtains food for himself, applying efforts to this;
  • grasping reflex – the baby firmly squeezes the finger of an adult in his palm;

  • Deep — the baby is relaxed, breathes evenly, eyes are closed;
  • Shallow – the newborn behaves restlessly;
  • Drowsy – the child half-closes his eyes;
  • Wakefulness – the baby is active and mobile.

There are two options for height and weight. From Russian pediatricians, they look like this:

Indicator Lower limit Upper limit
Weight of boys, kg 3. 6 5.1
Weight of girls, kg 3.6 4.7
Boys height, cm 51.2 56.5
Girls height, cm 50.3 56.1
Boys head circumference, cm 35.5 39.1
Head circumference of girls, cm 35.0 38.1
Boys chest circumference, cm 34.1 38.9
Chest circumference of girls, cm 34.0 38.1

The World Health Organization adheres to several other indicators:

Indicator Lower limit Upper limit
Weight of boys, kg 3.4 5.8
Weight of girls, kg 3.2 5.5
Boys height, cm 50.8 58.6
Girls height, cm 49. 8 57.6
Boys head circumference, cm 34.9 39.6
Head circumference of girls, cm 34.2 38.9

But you should not rely on these weight gain tables in the first month of a baby’s life. They are calculated on averages and do not take into account individual characteristics of development. In the first two weeks of life, the baby adds 150 g. For a month, the increase is approximately 600 g. 2 cm is added to his height.

Feeding basics

The main food for a newborn is breast milk. Some women have little of it, but you can try to restore lactation. For this child, they are often applied to the chest at the first sign of the baby’s anxiety. This mode is called “feeding on demand.” On average, up to 12 applications per day.

Mom needs to control nipple latch. The child should take the entire areola. Some babies get tired of suckling quickly and fall asleep. They need to be lightly patted on the cheeks or change the chest. After feeding, the baby is helped to burp in the following ways:

  • the child is placed upright and rested on the shoulder of an adult;
  • help lay face down on mom’s lap;

  • Cooing;
  • Eye fixation;
  • Development of vision;
  • Reaction to sounds;

Mastering the care of a newborn is a task that every mother must cope with. Learning how to feed the baby, monitor the hygiene of the baby, change diapers on time, properly dress the baby – this is not a complete list of what will become the daily duty of a young mother. Read on to learn how to properly care for a newborn in the first days of life and after discharge from the hospital.

Newborn care in the maternity hospital

The birth of a baby is a sacrament, a test and great happiness. No matter how difficult it may be for the mother in the first days after childbirth, the baby should not be left without care and attention for a minute. Firstly, the newborn experiences tremendous stress, secondly, the baby adapts to the environment, and thirdly, the mother is the only person the child knows at the subconscious level.

Newborn care in the maternity hospital is not only timely feeding and changing diapers. Mommy should monitor the body temperature of the crumbs, be able to properly pick up the baby, not leave him unattended in the first minutes after feeding. If you have any difficulties or questions, be sure to contact the medical staff. The basics of how to care for a newborn are told by obstetricians, pediatric nurses, and doctors. Also, in the era of the Internet, it is not difficult to find literature on your own, which describes in detail the care of a baby.

No matter how solid the theoretical knowledge is, left alone with a newborn, most mothers fall into a stupor and do not know what to do with the baby and how to care for it.

It is important to highlight the main points, to systematize knowledge about how and what to do in the first days of a baby’s life. So:

  • Breastfeeding.

Proper feeding is the key to good nutrition, respectively, the development of the baby. A nurse or doctor in the maternity hospital will definitely show you how to properly attach the baby to the breast so that he can suck milk. They will tell you how and in what position to feed the child so that he does not choke on milk while eating.

During feeding, hold the baby in your arms, supporting the head – not in a horizontal or vertical position. Help your baby to completely take the nipple with his lips. If the baby sucks on the edge of the nipple, milk is not secreted in sufficient quantities, the child remains hungry, and the mother develops cracks and stagnation of milk in the ducts may occur.

After feeding, be sure to wipe the baby’s mouth with a cotton swab dipped in boiled water at room temperature.

Keep your baby in your arms after feeding. Hold it upright until you burp. The release of gases from the stomach is a natural process. The child swallows air along with milk. After the burp has happened, you can proceed to other procedures – the toilet, washing, changing diapers, processing the navel.

  • Navel treatment.

On the first day, an obstetrician or a children’s nurse themselves come and treat the navel of a newborn, telling the mother in detail about the features of the procedure.

From year to year, the standards and recommendations regarding whether and how to treat the navel need to be changed. The only thing that remains unchanged is the requirement to keep the umbilical region clean and dry. Mom should check the baby’s navel daily until it is overgrown. This usually happens towards the end of the first month of a baby’s life.

  • Nasal and eye hygiene.

While the baby is in the womb, he is surrounded by amniotic fluid – this is a liquid environment inside the membranes. After delivery, the crumbs are wiped, but the substance remains in the nasal passages, in the corners of the eyes. The task of the mother is to clean the crumbs’ nose daily and rinse the eyes to remove the remnants of biological substances, which are a favorable environment for the development of pathogens. In addition, the nose becomes clogged if the baby spits up milk abundantly.

Before leaving the hospital, be sure to contact the doctors and get instructions on how to care for your baby yourself. Procedures such as changing a diaper, washing, bathing, daily skin care for a child are fully mastered already at home.

Newborn care at home

In the first days after the hospital, all the instructions received, the acquired skills of feeding the crumbs are forgotten. It seems to mothers that they are left alone with their fears and are not able to cope with elementary tasks. Blame it on inexperience, fatigue. Despite this, it is important to pull yourself together and ensure proper care for your newborn baby.

At home, you will need to learn skills such as:

  • Changing a diaper.

At the maternity hospital, swaddling and diaper changes are handled by nurses. Not all mothers in the first days after childbirth are able to get up, take the baby in their arms, wash and change clothes. If you managed to practice in the postpartum ward, then changing diapers will not be a problem.

Change your baby’s diapers every 2-3 hours or after a bowel movement. Do not wait until the diaper is completely filled with bowel movements. High humidity will provoke diaper rash on delicate baby skin. Wounds will become an additional source of irritation and pain for the crumbs, who are already scared in a new and still alien world for him.

After removing the used diaper, wash your baby, pat your feet and buttocks dry with a soft, dry towel. If necessary, lubricate the skin with baby diaper rash cream.

When putting on a new diaper, make sure that it does not compress the baby’s legs and tummy.

  • Swaddling.

Swaddle your baby or not, decide for yourself. Modern mothers believe that diapers limit the freedom of the crumbs and give preference to vests and sliders. Some neonatologists and pediatricians call for swaddling babies in the first months of life. The main argument is protection from heat loss and providing a sense of comfort. Newborns may involuntarily twitch their arms or legs during sleep. It scares them and wakes them up. The diaper restrains sudden movements.

If you are one of those mothers who is for swaddling, choose diapers made from natural fabrics, do not fix the baby’s body too much and make sure that the baby is not cramped or hot.

  • Washing.

Wash your baby after every bowel movement and before every diaper change. For the procedure, use warm water with a temperature of + 37–40 ° C (a temperature that is pleasant to the body, not cold and not hot).

If the child is contaminated with feces, wipe the anus with baby wipes. Please note that not all products are of high quality. We recommend talking to your doctor about which baby wipes to choose.

Wash your baby under water after wiping. Pay special attention to washing the urinary organs. After washing, pat your skin dry with a soft towel.

  • Bathing.

Water treatments are an essential part of the daily care of a newborn. Bathe your baby between feedings when the baby is active. Use boiled rather than running water at a pleasant body temperature of + 37-40 ° C. In the bath, you can add a decoction of chamomile, succession. If the baby is capricious, add a decoction of valerian to the water.

Rinse all wrinkles while bathing. Do not rub the body with a sponge, wipe the skin with your own palm.

Prepare everything you need for water procedures in advance. Make sure the room is warm and free of drafts. To make it easier to hold the baby, install a baby slide in the bath or ask someone for help. The baby must be kept in a reclining position, holding the head.

After bathing, wrap your baby in a dry diaper: it absorbs water like a sponge. It is absolutely impossible to wipe the crumbs with a towel. After water procedures, dress the child, feed and put to bed: water relaxes, and for the baby it is the best calm.

Mothers are taught and shown how to properly care for newborns at courses for pregnant women, in the maternity hospital before discharge. If in doubt about something or are not sure that you are taking care of the crumbs correctly, do not be afraid to ask for advice from specialists who will give professional recommendations.

Keep your baby clean, learn how to feed your baby, don’t leave him unattended even for a minute, listen to the maternal instinct.
