Medford, New Jersey

Medford is a township in Burlington County, New Jersey, United States.   History 9000

  sold to Samual Coles in 1670, it consisted of a total of 900 acres (3.6 km). ² ).   In 1820, when the post office opened, the area was officially called Medford in Upper Evesham, using a name coined by Mark Reeve, a developer who had recently visited Medford, Massachusetts. ^{[21] [22]} On March 1, 1847, Medford Township was “separated from” Evesham Township by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature. ^[20] The first village meeting was held at the Crossroads (County Route 541 and Church Road) on March 9, 1847.   Medford had a flourishing glass industry as early as 1825, in which the glass furnace made window panes. By 1850, William Porter was operating a glassworks in the triangle formed by South Main Street, Mill Street and Trimble Street. Glassmaking continued on the site through the 1880s under the names of companies including the Medford Glass Works and Star Glass, which at their height employed about 250 workers and built a sort of “company city” with houses for owners and managers and housing for workers. In the company store, workers could exchange daily allowances for food and basic necessities. Glass production ended around 1925, and by the mid-1940s the plant was demolished.   Medford’s location along the Camden and Atlantic Railroad, trade increased, and Medford expanded rapidly in the years following the Civil War.
