Why Does My Dog Have Bad Breath?

In the past 10 years, dental hygiene in dogs has changed from occasional tooth extractions to yearly dental examinations and routine teeth cleaning. Cloth materials tend to get stuck between the teeth, whereas sticks or other firm material such as chew toys may get wedged in the roof of a dog’s mouth. Some foreign bodies, like splinters, can get stuck under the tongue or in the cheek and may be hard to see. In some circumstances, strings or linear foreign material may get hooked under the tongue, and the bad breath could be accompanied by not eating and vomiting.

• Kidney Disease: The kidneys function as the body’s filtration system. When there’s underlying disease or kidney failure that causes the kidneys not to function, a dog may start to build up toxins called urea in their blood. The urea can make a dog’s breath smell like ammonia or urine, which may be an indicator of serious kidney dysfunction. Excessive urea, called uremia, can cause ulceration in the mouth as well, which your vet may see on examination.

• Liver Disease: Bad breath along with yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice) in conjunction with weight loss, poor appetite, and vomiting may indicate that your dog’s liver may be affected. In addition to the smell from the mouth, the disease can be indicated by a change in the frequency of urination, the amount of urine, the appearance of lethargy, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst.
3. The smell of acetone may occur during prolonged starvation, pancreatic diseases, diabetes mellitus, hyperthyroidism. In diabetes mellitus, the smell of acetone occurs at the stage of active development of the disease and indicates significant metabolic disorders. In addition to the unusual smell, the animal has increased thirst, weakness, skin itching, deterioration in the quality of wool, and decreased vision.
4. Metallic odor usually occurs in the presence of bleeding lesions. It appears as a result of the interaction of hemoglobin contained in the blood and fat oxidation products. The reason for the appearance of this smell from the mouth can be injuries of the oral cavity, gum disease, stomach ulcers. In some cases, the smell may occur when the puppy is having difficulty changing teeth.
5. Liver odor , often described by dog ​​owners as murine, is caused by poisoning, severe parasitic and infectious diseases, leading to damage to a significant number of liver cells. In addition to the smell, the pet may experience depression, loss of appetite, the appearance of icteric staining on visible mucous membranes.

How can you help your blind dog to adapt and feel safe?

Here are some helpful tips on how you can make the adjustment a smooth one for your best friend:

1. Speak Calmly

Your voice can have a calming effect on your dog. A change in a pet’s eyesight can be disorienting. Blind pets startle easily; avoid making sudden movements or loud noises. Alert your pet that you’re nearby.

When your senior dog becomes confused or disoriented, speak soothingly to your dog. Let them know you are near and able to help them if they need it. Use your voice to guide them. If they’re asleep, gently blow in their face or lightly touch them to wake them.

2. Stick to Your Routine

As your dog adjusts to their new blindness, stick to its daily routine. If you always start your day with a walk around the neighborhood, keep doing it! These activities are familiar to your dog and help give them a sense of normalcy. A pet dealing with recent vision loss will have difficulty adjusting to any significant change in its routine. Training tips to help a blind dog

If you have a blind dog, or your dog is starting to lose its vision, there are many things you can do to help them and you to adjust to their life in the dark.

Dogs can go blind for many reasons. From cataracts in old age to glaucoma, Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), accidents or other diseases that may see them progressively lose vision.

The list of possible causes is long, but many causes may be treatable if a dog is taken to see a Veterinary Opthamologist as soon as any irregularities are noticed. One of the key things to look out for is if your dog increasingly starts bumping into things, or they start to lose their orientation, especially at night time in the early stages of vision impairment.

Whatever the circumstances, living with a blind dog doesn’t have to be as daunting as it sounds…for either of you.

In fact, a blind dog can actually adjust quite quickly to life in the dark. Especially, if you tap into their most dominant sense –  smell, followed closely by hearing; and begin the training as soon as they begin to lose or have lost their vision.

By following the tips below, a blind dog can be fully adjusted in up to 3 months, particularly if you do start early before they have lost it completely.

1. SAFETY

Get down to their level & dog proof your yard

• Get down on all fours and crawl around your home looking for hazards.
• Put corner protectors on sharp furniture and baby gates at the tops of stairs until your dog can safely manoeuvre them.
• Check for any low branches or other obstacles in the back yard, placing bark a foot around trees, bushes or large objects to help signal an obstacle.
• Fence off the pool or any hazardous areas.

Stairs & slippery floors

• If you have slippery areas, cover with rugs and if any stairs are slippery (see Tip 3)
• Use strips on the stair treads as they learn to navigate.
• As your dog makes progress, you may want to use treats to help guide him or her to navigate the stairs.
• Place a treat on each stair and stand in front of your dog, do not pull them, allowing the treat to be the incentive to find their way as they make their way up and down.

Keep floors clear

• Keep the floor clean of toys, shoes, clothes etc. as they become tripping hazards, particularly the areas they most frequent.

Make a safe zone

• Have a comfortable, safe spot for your pet to be.

2. USE THEIR SENSE OF SMELL

Use Essentials Oils to mark locations

• Use different dog safe pure essential oils in different rooms to help guide them, but not too many that overwhelms them, ie: 2-3 drops of pure Vanilla in the kitchen, Lavender in the bedroom, Jasmine in the lounge room etc.  Make sure you know what essential oils may be harmful to dogs, cats or any other pets in your home before selecting.
• Scent the spot in these rooms that will help them distinguish important areas and items they will need to find such as their dog bed or sleeping area, next to the door that leads to the backyard, the water bowl etc.
• Reapply every couple of weeks.

Scented pot plants & directional smells

• Use scented flower-pots in the backyard, placed in strategic locations ie: near patio, doggy door, or back door. Again, make sure you know what plants are toxic to different pets.
• Make sure you go back to basic toilet training to help direct them to where you want them to go if you have had to change it for any reason due to hazards getting in the way.

3. MAPPING / GUIDING

• Use textured rugs / Location Cues to map out the house
• Use a carpet runner on well-travelled parts of the home. They can feel the floor and use it to correct their course if they got lost.
• Place rugs or floor mats of different textures near the outside doors and at the top and bottom of the steps. This will help your dog learn these locations.

Walk Him Through The House

• Leashing the dog and walking him around will help him familiarise and navigate through the house.
• Use a body harness and tight lead and keep him next to you so you can control and direct his movements.

Don’t Change The Floor Plan

• Once you have arranged the furniture in a way so your dog can easily pass through a room, try not to move it around again.
• Keeping everything in place will help prevent disorientation and injury.
• Push chairs back in after getting up.

Food and water bowls

• Always keep food and water bowls in the same spot or try a drinking fountain-style dog bowl that constantly circulates water and bubbles so they can hear it.

4. SOUND

Locating the back door

• Placing a wind chime or bell near the entrance to the back door of the house will help your dog with orientation.

Talk to Your Dog

• As dogs normally watch our every move, talk to your dog more than ever and ensure you have his attention before touching him so you don’t scare or startle him.

Introduce New Commands

• Teach your dog important safety words like “step up (use high pitch),” “step down (low pitch),” “left,” “right,” “danger” or “stop” to help him safely navigate the inside and outside world.
• Notify your dog as he or she heads towards a wall, using words like “watch, stop, careful.”

Use Bells

• You can attach small bells to your shoes, around your wrist or other pets that can act as a guide to help your dog and so they can hear you moving about the house, at least until he is more familiar with listening to the sounds of footsteps and vibrations from movement.

When leaving your dog alone

• When leaving your dog unattended, a limited space may initially work best.
• Keeping ambient noise like a TV or radio on while you’re gone not only orients your dog to different rooms of the house, but also reduces feelings of loneliness.

6. OUT WALKING

Keep a Routine

Let Others Know

• Get a shirt, bandana or vest for your dog that reads “I’m blind” and tell people about your dog’s condition so they approach slowly and let the dog sniff them first.
• Also, get a tag for your dog’s collar that says “I’m blind” in case she ever gets lost.

7. OTHER TIPS

• Signal to your dog when other people or dogs are approaching with a verbal cue, “dog coming” or “person coming” calm and relaxed tone and keep practising and repeating it so they can learn.
• They should be highly supervised around children so they aren’t startled or feel threatened and bite.
• The key to all dog training is to be clear, consistent and concise which is even more important than ever when helping a blind dog adjust.

– What are the causes of blindness in dogs?

– Causes of blindness in dogs include untreated eye injuries, severe eye burns, retinal detachment, congenital degenerative changes in the retina, cataracts and glaucoma.

— Probably the most common injury?

Yes. Being in large groups, walking unattended, in games with other dogs or cats, in fights, dogs can get serious eye injuries. Often these wounds are penetrating. Without treatment, severe wounds with bleeding and displacement of eye structures lead to blindness.

Another cause of blindness in animals is cataracts. Cataract is a disease of the lens, which is expressed in clouding of its fibers, an increase in rigidity, which results in blindness. All types of mammals and birds that have a formed organ of vision with a lens are susceptible to cataracts. In some cases, cataracts appear in young animals up to three years old. In such cases, it is possible to assume a traumatic or hereditary nature of the disease.

— What is a degenerative retinal disease?

– This is a whole group of pathologies that manifest themselves at different ages and in different breeds of dogs. These include: progressive retinal atrophy, stationary night blindness, rod and cone dystrophy. Unfortunately, when establishing such a diagnosis, one must understand that the outcome of such diseases is a significant decrease in vision or complete blindness.

– What is glaucoma?

— Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve, often accompanied by an increase in intraocular pressure.

— What happens to the organ of vision in glaucoma?

— Glaucoma is an eye disease characterized by increased intraocular pressure. The disease can occur with severe pain, an increase in the size of the eyeball. It is important to remember that heredity is an important factor in development. There are breeds of dogs that are susceptible to the disease due to deformation of the filtration iriocorneal angle. These breeds include Cocker Spaniel, Beagle, Dachshund, Boston Terrier, Dalmatian, Miniature Poodle, Norwegian Elkhund and Chow Chow.

Glaucoma is the destruction and death of ganglion cells in the retina and optic nerve, which play an important role in the functioning of the eye. In this case, the balance of intraocular fluid production and its outflow is often disturbed. The outflow of excess intraocular fluid through the iridocorneal angle is blocked, the pressure of the contents of the eyeball on the outer membranes of the eye increases, and the normal blood supply to the retinal tissue decreases. Fluoxetine, the generic name for Prozac, is in the class of medications called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) that are used in people to treat a wide range of anxiety disorders. Any dog owner who is considering giving their dog this drug should also know the potential downsides.

“[Prozac] is a very safe drug, far safer than a lot of other medications that people take without qualms,” Dodman says. “It is true, though, that if you take two serotonin medications together at high doses, the so-called serotonin syndrome theoretically could be triggered.”

Serotonin syndrome is the accumulation of too much of the serotonin chemical in the body, and symptoms include fever, muscle twitching, convulsions and more.

“I have never seen it, and I’ve never heard of it being reported in the vet literature, but it is a theoretical possibility,” Dodman says.

Something else to keep in mind: If you tell someone your dog is taking Prozac, it’s not uncommon to get a raised eyebrow, experts say.

“The stigma is that many people think it’s unconscionable to give human psychoactive medication to a dog,” Dodman says. “They clearly do not understand that it can be life-saving. The same people may shun that kind of medicine themselves, again, for no good reason. ”

What are the potential Prozac side effects in dogs?

Dodman, who has used Prozac on animals for more than 25 years, says dogs given the drug could experience the following side effects:

• Reduced appetite.
• Lack of energy.
• Pruritus (itch).
• Anxiety, tremors, restlessness or panting, if given too high a dose.

Before going the Prozac route, Petryk says it’s important to build a relationship with a veterinarian you trust, who knows both you and your dog. “There are many factors that need to be considered before reaching for a pill,” she says, all of which can be talked through with your veterinarian.

Petryk stresses that medications for behavior problems are not a one-stop solution.

“It is important to be aware that this medication may take several weeks to take full effect, and that drug therapy alone is not sufficient to control anxiety in the majority of cases without the addition of a strict behavioral modification program that may include training, desensitization or other methods appropriate for the particular pet,” Corr says.

What is fluoxetine?

Fluoxetine (brand names: Prozac®, Reconcile®, Sarafem®) is an SSRI antidepressant used to treat a variety of behavioral disorders in dogs and cats. The FDA approved form for dogs is labeled to treat separation anxiety.

Its use in cats, dogs, and birds to treat certain behavioral conditions is ‘off label’ or ‘extra label’. Many drugs are commonly prescribed for off label use in veterinary medicine. In these instances, follow your veterinarian’s directions and cautions very carefully as their directions may be significantly different from those on the label.

How is fluoxetine given?

Fluoxetine is given by mouth in the form of a tablet, capsule, or liquid. It may be given with or without food, but if your pet vomits when dosed on an empty stomach, give future doses with a meal or a treat. Measure liquid forms of this medication carefully. Do not stop this medication abruptly unless instructed by your veterinarian. Do not give this medication in conjunction with flea/tick collar use. Do not give aged cheeses to your pet while using this medication.

What if I miss giving my pet the medication?

The most common side effects include sleepiness and decreased appetite. Other side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, shaking, restlessness, panting, whining/vocalization, incoordination, hypersalivation, and weight loss. Serious/severe side effects include seizures, aggression, and excessive/persistent vomiting. In cats, behavior changes such as anxiety, irritability, lack of appetite, diarrhea, and changes in sleep and bathroom use.

This moderate-acting medication should stop working in a few days, although effects can be longer in pets with liver or kidney disease.

Are there any risk factors for this medication?

Fluoxetine should not be used in pets with a history of seizures or in pets that are on medications that lower the seizure threshold. It should not be used in pets that are allergic to it, pets taking MAOIs, pets younger than 6 months of age, or aggressive pets. Use cautiously in pets with diabetes mellitus, severe liver disease, or in pregnant or lactating pets.

Are there any drug interactions I should be aware of?

The following medications should be used with caution when given with fluoxetine: anticoagulants, aspirin, buspirone, cyproheptadine, diazepam, alprazolam, diuretics, flea/tick collars, insulin, isoniazid, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), methadone, NSAIDs, pentazocine, phenytoin, propranolol, metoprolol, St. John’s wort, tramadol, tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), or trazodone.

There is a lot of stress in America and your pets are not protected. That’s right, your puppy may be worried. In severe cases, medication may be needed, such as Prozac for dogs. According to Dr. Amy Pike, a Northern Virginia veterinary behaviorist and self-proclaimed psychiatrist of the canine world, the number of alarming diagnoses in dogs has increased over the past few decades.

In the US, 45 million homes have at least one dog. This is the highest rate of dog owners since the American Veterinary Medical Association first began measuring in 1982. There haven’t been any good studies on the prevalence of anxiety in dogs in general, but Dr. Pike says noise aversion studies show that 60-70% of dogs have noise phobia. This may include behaviors such as being afraid of garbage trucks and panicking during thunderstorms.

To help their pets, some owners turn to antidepressants such as Prozac (fluoxetine). The 2017 National Market Survey suggests that nearly 10% of dog owners give their pet anxiety medication.

What is Prozac for dogs (fluoxetine)?

When veterinarians give dogs Prozac (generic fluoxetine), it’s the same medicine you would get from your doctor for a similar problem, just in a different dosage. It is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), meaning it blocks the reabsorption of serotonin in your body. When levels of this neurotransmitter in the brain are higher, it is thought to improve mood. Does your dog need medication for anxiety?

The veterinarian must rule out a medical cause before prescribing a sedative medication. Dog anxiety can be caused by internal problems such as irritability caused by allergies or even pain caused by osteoarthritis.

Once an underlying condition has been ruled out, your veterinary behaviorist will evaluate your dog’s social and environmental history, as well as episodes of anxiety. Dr. Pike says it’s really not always about figuring out “why” but about how to move forward. Diagnosis—for example, fear-based aggression toward humans and dogs—is accompanied by a prognosis. For dogs with more severe anxiety: she recommends Prozac (fluoxetine). Lexapro or Zoloft are other widely used brand name psychotropic drugs. There is also an FDA-approved version of fluoxetine specifically for dogs called Reconcile. Dr. Pike likes this version because it comes in a flavored chewable tablet that most dogs will take as a treat.

How long does Prozac work on dogs?

According to Dr. Pike, after four weeks the medicine will work [and] begin to make the changes we need in the brain. About 30% of dogs will need to be switched to another medication such as Lexapro or Zoloft if Prozac does not work.

Any side effects, usually gastrointestinal—vomiting, diarrhea, and anorexia—which Dr. Pike says only last a day or two in psychopharmaceutical-positive dogs.

What should you do besides medication?

Dr. Pike warns that drugs are not magic bullets that can cure the underlying disease. To change the underlying emotion that drives a dog’s behavior, therapy is key. Dr. Pike says that without behavior modification, a dog is unlikely to ever go off medication.

Research confirms this. Daniel Mills, Professor of Veterinary Behavioral Medicine at Lincoln University, UK, wrote in the 2015 Prozac and Pet Study that medications and a behavior change program were important for effective treatment.

Dr. Pike, who is one of less than 70 certified veterinary behaviorists in North America, uses drugs to make change easier. The drug reduces the intensity of fear and arousal that govern behavior; So, once the dog’s fear threshold is lowered, the trainer can teach the dog alternative coping skills. Pike says a lot of the work she does is also teaching owners how to deal with their dog’s behavior.

The treatment schedule depends on how long the dog has been suffering. Dr. Pike reports that no matter how many years this behavior continues, that’s equal to the number of months the treatment is expected to take.
