Animals in service: how dogs are selected for work in the police
Today, about 13 thousand dogs are in the service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, they help solve crimes, protect public order, there are detecting dogs. About how dogs are selected for police service and how animals are kept, in an interview with Veterinary Medicine and Life, the head of the FKU Center for Canine Support of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia Sergey Kachkin, a police colonel, spoke.
Sergey Anatolyevich, what breeds of dogs become service dogs?
Sergey Kachkin: Currently, there are about 13,000 service dogs of 46 breeds in the divisions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.
The most common breed is the German Shepherd. Service dogs of this breed make up 72.7% of the total. There are also service dogs of the following breeds: Belgian Shepherd Dog (10. 5%), Labrador Retriever (4.7%), East European Shepherd Dog (3.1%), Rottweiler (2.6%), Russian Spaniel (1.7%), Central Asian Shepherd Dog (1.2%).
How are dogs selected for service in the Ministry of Internal Affairs?
Sergey Kachkin: Dogs must be healthy, fit for training, and puppies – for growing and further training. For this purpose, examinations and tests are carried out taking into account the age of the dog.
First of all, temperament, its shortcomings, the depth of fear, the strength of stress and other psychophysiological characteristics are evaluated. Breeding of service dogs in the internal affairs bodies of the Russian Federation is carried out in order to reproduce and preserve the population of service dogs with high working qualities.
What job duties do they perform?
Sergei Kachkin: Service dogs are used to solve crimes, protect public order and ensure public safety. In the activities of the internal affairs bodies, they are used in the following areas: search for scent traces of a person, search, detection and designation of target substances by their smell, search for corpses, cadaveric remains and traces of human blood, guard duty, escort service, conducting research on scent traces with detector dogs.

Tell us about how service dogs are trained?
Sergey Kachkin: Training of service dogs consists of three stages: preparatory, basic training course and regular training.
Service dogs are trained from 1 to 4 years of age. Specialists-cynologists are engaged in training in the centers of canine services of the territorial bodies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, as well as in educational organizations of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.
All training is built taking into account individual characteristics of behavior, the degree of training and the process of developing the skills of a service dog, the influence of a specific situation and other external conditions.
In the process, it is important not to make mistakes that lead to the development of undesirable dog behavior. The most important thing is to establish contact with the animal. Trusting interaction is the key to subsequent good work.
What is the difference between keeping a service dog and keeping a pet?
Sergey Kachkin: Service dogs and puppies are kept in enclosures on the territory of the cynological division, and may also be kept at the place of residence of the cynologist with his consent and with the permission of the head of the territorial body of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.
Caring for service dogs and puppies is one of the main conditions for maintaining their performance and includes: inspection of service dogs and puppies to determine their health status, walking, cleaning, feeding, cleaning enclosures and territory. Service dogs and puppies are cleaned daily.
Do service dogs have rations or special allowances?
Sergey Kachkin: Pets are fed with products or special feeds in accordance with the developed norms. On the recommendation of
veterinary specialists, patients, as well as pedigree dogs that are expecting or have given birth to offspring, are transferred to enhanced rations.
How is their veterinary care provided?
Sergey Kachkin: Veterinary specialists identify and treat sick service dogs, conduct medical examinations, take measures for vaccination, deworming, disinfection and disinfestation, monitor compliance with the rules for the placement, maintenance and care of animals, and much more.
Do service dogs have a pension?
Sergey Kachkin: The age limit for a dog to be used in the service is 8 years. In some cases, it may be increased beyond the period of 1 year.
When it’s time for a service dog to retire, it’s usually the canine handler who has worked with it that takes the companion home with him. Such dogs are also donated to the good hands of citizens and organizations.
Are service dogs rewarded?
Sergey Kachkin: In the system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, service animals are not awarded any insignia.
Scientists have found out which dog breeds are the friendliest (bull terrier in the list)
Although the dog is the first animal tamed by man and has existed with us for tens of thousands of years, the relationship between dogs and their owners has developed in different ways over all these centuries. There are, as you know, working breeds that are called upon to guard the house, pull teams, or, for example, graze herds. Their character can hardly be called affectionate and “sofa”. There is a companion dog, which is just for the soul and is considered almost a member of the family. However, as the published results of scientists have shown, human orientation does not always depend on the breed group. More precisely, if it comes to communicating with smaller brothers with people, then all breeds are equal. This means that you need to study their friendliness according to the same principle and give each one a chance.
Scientists have identified man’s best friends.
During the study, observations were made on 11,000 dogs representing 300 breeds.
– Dog breed is an important factor in determining personality differences. And although each dog is individual, there are certain character traits inherent in this or that breed. Most of its representatives have them, says lead author of the study, Mila Salonen.
The list of the most friendly breeds to people consists of 26 items, but we will introduce you to the top ten. So if you want to get a dog just as a friend (including a child), you should pay attention to these “man’s best friends.”
1. Bull Terrier
The breed was bred in the 1950s. Before that, a terrier and an Old English Bulldog were crossed, and then the blood of several more breeds was poured. The modern Bull Terrier has strong jaws and an intimidating appearance, the breed is physically very strong and is even mistakenly considered a fighting one. The thing is that initially bull terriers were used for underground dog fights. However, modern representatives of this breed have long lost the aggressiveness of their ancestors: even the guards of them are unimportant. It’s all about being too friendly to a person. Bull Terriers love the company of people and do not tolerate loneliness. But with other dogs, they, as a rule, do not get along well, because they have a natural tendency to dominate. At the same time, cynologists warn that training is especially necessary for the bull terrier. If the dog is not engaged, it will be uncontrollable. However, this can be said about other breeds.

2. Tickap poodle
Tickap is the smallest member of the poodle family. Outwardly, he is not very similar to the classic poodle, and some experts do not recognize this breed at all, considering tickaps to be a marriage. This dog is like a soft toy. Due to their miniature size (tee-cap is translated from English as “a cup of tea” – they say, such a dog shrinks into it), these poodles have a number of problems. They are very fragile, often injured without proper care, prone to a number of diseases and require special care. But here’s their friendliness and charm – they are affectionate and obedient pets.

3.
Golden Retriever . They are easy to train and friendly dogs. The breed was bred in the UK in the century before last. Goldens have always been considered excellent hunters, implicitly following the orders of the owner. Modern representatives of this breed perfectly perform not only hunting, but also other types of work. They are used by law enforcement to search for drugs and explosives, golden retrievers perform well as rescue dogs and therapy dogs, as they get along well with both adults and children. They are even friendly to other dogs.

4. Jack Russell Terrier
Jack Russell, whose mention immediately brings to mind the Hollywood movie “The Mask”, is in third place in the list of the most friendly breeds. Initially, this type of terrier was also bred for hunting, but now everyone has forgotten about it. Today they are mostly excellent companions. True, the Jack Russell has one very characteristic feature that not everyone will like: they are incredibly energetic and they need to be constantly on the move. Therefore, such a friend is suitable for an active owner.

5. Dachshund
The dachshund is considered an ideal friend for humans, and research by Finnish scientists, who put it in 4th place, has scientifically confirmed this. Germany is considered the birthplace of dachshunds. This is the oldest of the breeds of burrowing dogs, its ancestors existed next to humans, presumably in ancient Egypt. Mentions of just such a breed date back to the 16th century. Apparently, such a long communication with people from generation to generation left an imprint on the character and gradually made this purely utilitarian breed (badgers were hunted with dachshunds) just a companion.

6. Brachycephalic dogs
Brachycephalic dogs include several breeds, including pugs, bulldogs and boxers. Brachycephalic dogs are distinguished by a very short, flat muzzle and large head. After conducting research, Finnish scientists found that all breeds of this type have high communicative qualities and extraordinary friendliness towards humans. This breed can be safely started by both adults and families with children, however, the physiological characteristics of brachycephals should be taken into account. They often have breathing problems, they are prone to injury and so on, so the owner needs to be especially careful with such a dog.

7. Whippet
The Whippet is a graceful thin dog, inferior in size to a Greyhound, but larger than a Italian Greyhound. She is not as famous as a dachshund, poodle or pug, but her love for people puts her on a par with popular breeds. Whippets were bred in the century before last and were originally used to hunt hares. They are descended from greyhounds, but they presumably also have terrier blood. In addition to good hunting qualities, this breed has friendliness, so whippets are often started just as companions. They can make an excellent company even on long journeys.

8. Chinese Crested Dog
This is an ancient breed, the ancestors of which, presumably, were Chihuahua and Xolo (according to another version – African hairless dogs). The Chinese crested has two variations: hairless (pets that have hair only on the head, tip of the paws and tail) and downy (completely covered with long hair). These dogs are absolutely not characterized by aggression, they adore people, get along well with children, are obedient, affectionate and perfectly trained. Moreover, crested have excellent health and are considered centenarians. True, when choosing a naked dog, you need to take into account the weather conditions when walking. In cold weather, the pet will need to be dressed.

In addition to excellent health, the Spitz has the ability to learn and friendliness towards humans. This is one of the most problem-free breeds in terms of maintenance, including in a city apartment. True, the coat of the German Spitz requires special care.

10. Labrador Retriever
Representatives of this ancient hunting breed, like their “relatives” – golden retrievers, were originally bred as hunting dogs. However, now they are ideal companions for adults and children. Labradors make excellent and caring guide dogs, rescue dogs, in general, this is an almost universal working breed that can only be an evil guard. In the ranking of a person’s best friends, she closes the top ten.
Labrador.
It is worth adding that the study conducted in Finland concerned not only friendliness, but, on the contrary, the inability to communicate with a person in the format of a companion and friend. So, in the top ten most unfriendly to people, unexpectedly, were such popular breeds as the Pinscher and Schnauzer, German Shepherd, Shorthaired Collie, and sled dogs.
Alas, not all of a person’s friends receive the same in return for devotion.
