About the Provider

Description: Winchester Day Preschool celebrates over 70 years of child care service for working parents in the Winchester / Frederick County region. From humble beginnings in 1939, with two teachers, one aide and 33 children, the Gertrude Barton Nursery School provided care for the children of low-income families while mothers helped with the war effort. In 1951, after ten years of growth and three different locations, the original nursery was incorporated as the Winchester Day Preschool and settled at its current home of 133 Lincoln Street. Through the years, the goal to provide affordable daycare in a safe, nurturing and loving environment has remained unchanged. The Winchester Day Preschool, one of the original United Way agencies, continues to provide quality child care while enhancing the children’s social, emotional, physical and intellectual abilities. Our trained staff of dedicated employees works under the guidance of our Board of Directors to ensure the children mature in an academic-rich learning environment.

which one to choose and how they differ

Once upon a time we were proud of the hard drive on the computer as much as 40 GB! And now this may not be enough even for one film, if we talk about very high quality.

With the development of technology, even modern hard drives for hundreds and thousands of gigabytes are no longer enough. In addition, hard drives have their own resource, which ends sooner or later, so purchasing a new HDD or SSD is only a matter of time. If you are worried about the safety of your collection of movies, photos, music or any other information, then it is better not to delay the purchase.

Which hard drive should I choose? What is the difference between HDD and SSD and is there such a big difference? Which hard drive is good for work and which one for gaming? These and other questions concern any buyer – we will try to answer them.

If you feel that programs on your computer have started to load indecently for a long time, if you catch constant blue screens during work, incomprehensible slowdowns have appeared – these are the first bells hinting that it’s time to change the hard drive.

Modern storage media can be conditionally divided into those with which it is convenient to work, and those on which it can be stored. They differ in the speed of work, “capacity”, etc.

In terms of volume, SSDs cannot yet be compared with HDDs. There are models with a capacity of 4 TB, but they are obscenely expensive and are used for special tasks and server machines.

A typical computer uses an SSD of about 320 GB. This is due to the higher price of SSD compared to HDD. But at the same time, such a volume allows you to install an operating system on your hard drive, as well as the most important programs and games.

HDD drives are the most common class of hard drives. They exist for a long time and over time they add only in the ability to store more information. Inside the case of such a device are special magnetic disks, on which data is recorded.

Recording and reading information from disks is carried out using a special reading head. The principle of operation is similar to the old turntables, the only difference is that the read head in the “hard drive” does not directly touch the magnetic disk due to the appearance of an air gap during a very fast rotation of the plate.

On the one hand, HDDs are capable of storing huge amounts of information: the capacity of some models reaches 14 TB (14000 GB) and this is not the limit. Another plus is the relatively low price, and the larger the hard drive, the lower the cost of 1 GB in its volume.

On the other hand, their weakness is the presence of moving parts in the structure. They do not have high write and read speeds, so it is advantageous to use them simply for storing information.

SSD drives are solid-state drives that have no moving parts, and the storage elements are in the form of chips.

The principle of operation is similar to a flash drive, but such devices are much more complex and faster. Especially the difference in speed is noticeable in comparison with the HDD. If information can be written and read to magnetic disks at speeds up to 220 Mb / s (usually about 150 Mb / s), then for SSD drives this figure can be ten times higher.

High write and read speeds provide faster access to large amounts of information while running and loading applications. The same Windows operating system installed on an SSD boots 10-15 times faster than from an HDD.

Many modern applications and games load the hard disk very much, make downloads in the process of work – this can cause very strong “brakes”. For smoother performance and faster downloads, it makes sense to install resource-intensive applications on an SSD. The

SSDs are quiet, while the HDDs can rattle a lot, especially after years of hard work under load.

There is a legend that the service life of an SSD is much shorter than an HDD. This is due to the fact that solid state drives have a limited number of information rewriting cycles. In fact, you will have to try hard to ruin your SSD by overwriting hundreds of gigabytes per day, but even in this case, a modern drive will live for several years without losing performance. If you are buying not a basement consumer goods, but an SSD from a reliable manufacturer, then you can not be afraid of this.

SSHD, or Hybrid drives, are mutants in which a small solid state drive is built into the body of a regular HDD. As a rule, this volume is enough to install the operating system. Referred to as SSHD. Often sold in ready-made PC assemblies.

This is interesting: when the OS is installed, a special paging file is created on the hard drive. It performs the function of additional virtual RAM when the installed on the motherboard is no longer enough for the correct operation of applications. The problem is that working with this type of memory requires much higher speeds than those that a regular HDD can provide, which is why, if there is not enough RAM in the computer, the hard drive may start to slow down after it. A paging file on an SSD will allow you to work with memory much more efficiently and speed up your computer a little, but this solution is not a panacea – if necessary, it is still better to buy additional RAM for your PC.

So, if you do not want to bother with the characteristics of hard drives, you can quickly choose a device for yourself using the following formula:

  • 30% of current needs.
  • For a home computer that will be used to store and watch movies, surf the Internet and play games to the HDD, it is better to buy an SSD with a small volume on which you can install the operating system. As an option, purchase an SSHD disk that will satisfy the needs of any casual user.
  • If you are a hardcore gamer, then for a good system unit it is better to get a fast and capacious HDD, where you can store regular information and games (and modern games weigh tens of gigabytes). Particularly gluttonous games are best installed on an SSD so that there are no slowdowns in the process that affect the quality of your wagering.

Drives are connected to the motherboard and to the power supply using special cables. The main interface that is most often used for these purposes is SATA.

Old HDDs were connected to the motherboard using IDE connectors, but now such devices are very difficult to find. Sometimes it becomes necessary to connect an IDE drive to a SATA connector, but in this case you will have to buy an adapter that is not cheap.

SATA interfaces are divided into 3 types: SATA 1, SATA 2 and SATA 2.

They differ in bandwidth: 1.5, 3 and 6 Gb / s, respectively. The first two versions are considered obsolete, and if SATA 2 can still be found somewhere, then SATA 1 is gradually fading into oblivion.

Before buying a hard drive, find out which interface is on your motherboard. There is no need to overpay for a device with a modern SATA 3, if it simply will not be supported by your PC. Of course, physically you can connect a more modern connector to the old SATA 2, because they are compatible, but in this case your hard drive will work at half the speed declared.

If you decide to get a good SSD, it is better to connect it via SATA 3 interface to ensure maximum performance.

There is also an NVMe interface. With it, SSDs are connected to the motherboard in the PCI Express slot. So far, such drives have not been widely used.

Hard drives, both HDD and SSD, require additional power. When buying a new hard drive or drive, make sure you have free cables from the power supply with the appropriate connectors. Sometimes such cables with adapters are included with the hard drive, otherwise they will have to be purchased separately.

On average, one hard drive consumes about 7 W of electricity, SSDs are more economical and “eat up” about 2 W, which practically does not affect the selection of a power supply.

This setting applies to HDDs and SSHDs (because SSDs have no moving parts as they are based on chips). Magnetic platters in hard drives rotate at high speeds – their performance depends on this.

For a long time, 5400 rpm discs have been produced, now they are becoming obsolete. This speed is enough to perform everyday tasks, but in stationary home computers, HDDs with a speed of 7200 rpm are more common. This is the golden mean, which allows you to comfortably work and play not too resource-intensive games.

The higher the spindle speed, the more noise the hard drive makes. This is not very critical, but at night, when everyone in the house is sleeping, it is easy to catch the difference.

The most commonly used HDD in laptops is 5400 rpm. This makes the device quieter, consumes less power and heats up less.

The sequential read speed is one of the most important parameters to consider when choosing a hard drive for your PC or laptop. The higher it is, the faster programs and games will access the necessary files in the process.

Read speeds above 200 MB/s are a good option for modern hard drives. HDDs with lower read speeds tend to run at low speeds and come in handy when you use your computer or laptop for casual purposes like surfing the Internet or watching movies. But even in this case, the long loading of the OS can be annoying.

As for SSD drives, their reading speed is several times higher. The best choice for a home PC would be an SSD with a read speed of about 500 MB / s.

Write speed is considered a secondary parameter – it does not affect the performance of the computer so much, it will rather make you wait when transferring large amounts of information from one disk to another, installing programs, and so on. It is better if this indicator is equal to the read speed, but in this case the drive will be slightly more expensive.

Flash type is a setting that applies to Solid State Drives (SSDs). As we have already said, the SSD has its own resource, which is based on the number of cycles of rewriting information into memory cells.

Nearly all consumer SSDs on the market today have NAND flash. This means that the memory cells on the chips are arranged in several layers, which is a plus and allows you to increase the storage capacity. Without getting into technical details, we’ll just compare the types a bit and highlight their advantages.

SLC memory stores one bit of information in one cell. This memory is best used for servers.

MCL and TLC memory locations can store more than one bit of information.

MLC memory is slightly faster than TLC, lasts longer, consumes less power, but is more expensive.

TLC withstands fewer rewrite cycles and is slower, but cheap and cheerful. However, for the average user, the difference will be almost imperceptible. If you want to save money, you can safely take an SSD with this type of flash memory.

3D V-NAND memory, according to tests, is slightly more reliable and faster than regular NAND.

The volumes of modern hard drives are expressed in GB and TB.

1 TB = 1024 GB, but more often this figure is rounded up to 1000. To determine how much disk space is right for you for work and leisure, just estimate the approximate amount of data that you will operate with.

Sooner or later, the place will start to run out anyway and you will have to think about what to remove painlessly to make room for new information.
If text documents and other work information take up very little space, then photos from modern cameras (especially in RAW format) and videos take up much larger volumes.
A good movie that you honestly bought on a torrent can “weigh” 40-60 GB, especially if you are a fan of watching videos in 4K.
Modern games already weigh from 20 to 100 GB – and this is not the limit.

For a multimedia computer, you should choose a hard drive with a capacity of at least 1 TB, although this is not enough for many, so you should not skimp on the volume. It is better if the PC has hard drives with a capacity of 2-4 TB – a small margin will never be superfluous.

Choose the size of the SSD according to your needs. These drives are much more expensive. Usually they are bought to install the OS, programs and some games. So, a freshly installed Windows 10 will take up about 20 GB of space, plus the programs you plan to install in the future. Windows has a tendency to overgrow with mountains of garbage, updates and other files that are not deleted on their own, and only an experienced user can clean up. You won’t have time to blink an eye, as about 80 GB will be occupied on the C drive. The advice here is the same – take it with a margin.

Simply put, the form factor is the size, in this case the size of the media in the PC. Also, the form factor describes the appearance of the device.

The standard HDD form factor is 3.5”. It is for this size in modern computer cases that slots for hard drives are designed, but there are exceptions. For example, in some cases without a special stand-tray for a hard drive, it simply cannot be fixed to the side walls with screws.

Now there is a tendency to reduce the form factor of drives. There is a smooth transition to 2.5 inches, because huge devices are no longer required to store large amounts of information, as before. In addition, some manufacturers are already announcing that they will stop producing 3.5-inch drives. If you fundamentally do not want to use the new format, then take a closer look at 2.5-inch drives installed in a 3.5 case.

The 2.5” format is also used in laptop storage drives and as a form factor for external media connected via USB. When such a drive is connected to USB 2.0, the data transfer rate can reach 480 Mbps, and when connected to USB 3.0, the throughput increases to 5 Gbps.

Most modern SSD drives are produced in 2.5” format.

There are also M.2 SSDs, mSATA and others. In appearance, they are more reminiscent of ordinary boards with microcircuits, and some are easily confused, for example, with RAM. In fact, this is a new stage in the evolution of drives. Motherboards have PCI-Express slots, which have much more bandwidth than SATA. For example, PCI-Express 2.0 has a bandwidth of 8 Gb/s (about 1 Gb per second), while PCI-Express 3.0×4 is capable of transferring data at 32 Gb/s. For home use, such disks are practically useless and it is not worth overpaying for them, but for work computers that work with large amounts of information, they are a real must-have.

mSATA (micro SATA) is an SSD form factor that is available for installation in laptops, tablets, netbooks, and other devices. Although sometimes they can be installed in regular motherboards, but for this they must have a special slot that supports the required voltage.

Also worth mentioning are the sizes of M.2 drives. Usually it is indicated in the form of numbers, for example, 2280. In this case, the first two digits are the width of the board in mm, and the last two are the length. It is important to take this parameter into account when selecting a drive for a small system unit, and even more so for a laptop, where every millimeter counts.

Recently, new M.2 form factors for solid state drives are gaining popularity. Not only do they look different from regular SSDs, but they plug into a separate slot found on some modern motherboards. This reduces the number of wires in the system unit, saves space and allows you to work with data at high speeds.

The specifications for such drives contain a parameter called a key. The key is a jumper that is located on the device connector between the contacts and determines which interface will work when connected. The most popular keys today are B-key (allows you to work with SATA and PCI-E x2 interfaces) and M-key (works with SATA and PCI-E x4, high-speed interface).

If the M.2 SSD has a B+M key, then this ensures cross-compatibility with different motherboards. The fact is that the connectors in some boards can support either the M or B key, and the B + M universal key is designed to solve this problem.

Before buying an M.2 SSD, carefully read the specifications of your motherboard and check if it supports the interface you need through the M. 2 slot.

If you do not want to fill your head with unnecessary information, then briefly about the main thing:

  • An ordinary HDD with a speed of 5400 rpm, from 300 to 500 GB will be enough for an office computer;
  • If you buy a hard drive for use in a home computer where you watch movies and like social networks, a 1 TB HDD will suffice;
  • If you are an active PC user who loves speed and short downloads, then you can buy an SSD with a capacity of about 120 GB to 1 TB HDD to install OS and programs on it;
  • If you like to play resource-intensive games, it is better to choose an SSD from 240 GB + HDD to 2 TB with a spindle speed of 7200 rpm and a read speed of 200 Mb / s;
  • For a high-quality gaming PC, you can choose an SSD with a capacity of up to 1TB + one or two HDDs with a capacity of 2TB each, high speeds of rotation of the spindle and reading;
  • If you are a geek who likes to play with hardware, then try experimenting with M.
