I had a pretty decent experience at LHWL, but like other schools there were till some issues. Although it was nice to have a small student body, there was little to no diversity and the teachers are not the best for the subjects they teach. I never had a problem in math until I entered pre-calc and was stuck with a teacher whom does not enjoy his job and is not able to teach the class effectively. There are a few teachers who also seem to struggle with keeping their anger to themselves, and many times take it out on their students instead. I have not had any issues in sports at LHWL, but I wish there was a bigger variety, and that more of the sports were co-ed. I feel as though I have been prepared more to go into a Lutheran College, rather than a public college where most kids are looking to go on to. In our science wing it is very strong, but our chemistry program is not that good, many kids end up teaching themselves. Our biology program is very strong though.

My time at Lutheran High School Westland was unlike any other. I was never a kid that would easily fit in with other, but the students here are very accepting and welcome others with open arms. I am a senior this year so i have seen and done everything. The key to making your time amazing at LHWL is to become involved in a sport or club to get to know others and create close relationships. I would not have gone anywhere else but here to get my education and start a new chapter of my life!

Due to its dedicated teachers and supportive atmosphere, Lutheran High Westland is an excellent school. The teachers at Lutheran High all show their love for students in their own unique ways. While some may not be so blatant in their ways of caring, each teacher makes an effort to help their students more than just academically. LWHL’s teachers support their students mentally, spiritually, and even at athletic events which contributes substantially to the united atmosphere. The student body is also full of fun and encouraging individuals that are willing to reach out to others. A day will not go by at Lutheran High where a student does not stand up for an acquaintance or even simply a random classmate. Lutheran High is never lacking in encouragement and positive growth through the support of students and teachers alike.

Despite the pressure of the environment, Edward made a choice in favor of love and abdicated. His younger brother Albert became king, after the coronation he took the name of George VI, and the young princess Lillibet was the first in line for the throne.

On the night of February 6, 1952, George VI died of thrombosis. News of her father’s death caught Elizabeth in Kenya, and she returned to London as Queen of Great Britain. “I pray to God for help in this difficult burden that was placed on me at such a young age,” shared the new sovereign.

Elizabeth took the throne in a rather difficult situation: under her father, the collapse of the British Empire began – India, Pakistan, Burma and Ceylon gained independence, and a young Jewish state of Israel arose in place of Mandatory Palestine. The international situation also remained difficult: the world was just recovering from the consequences of the Second World War, and the Cold War between the USSR and the USA was already gaining momentum.

The TV Queen

Elizabeth’s coronation took place on June 2, 1953. For the first time in the history of the country, the ceremony was televised. She was followed by millions of people around the world, and many Britons even bought their first televisions specifically for this.

“People have to see me to believe me” – such a phrase, according to biographers, more than once sounded from the lips of the queen in almost 70 years of her reign.

An unexpected friendship

The first British Prime Minister the 25-year-old queen had to deal with was Winston Churchill, a very extraordinary and rather difficult politician to communicate with. Historians say that Churchill was so annoyed that “quite a child” was on the throne that he even cried with anger.

However, over time, his attitude towards the queen changed, and a friendship even began between them. It was from Churchill that Elizabeth II began the practice of regular audiences with prime ministers, which she continued until her death. Their meetings were often accompanied by jokes and laughter, and contemporaries recalled that Churchill “was crazy about the queen … and she got more pleasure from audiences with Churchill than with any of his successors.”

In 1955, Churchill resigned due to failing health. He was replaced in this post by conservative Anthony Eden. However, his premiership was short-lived and extremely unsuccessful due to the Suez crisis that erupted in 1956.

Contradictions between the new Egyptian authorities and the United States and Great Britain, as well as the refusal of the two Western powers to finance the construction of the Aswan Dam, pushed Cairo to nationalize the Suez Canal. In response, Great Britain, which owned part of the shares of the shipping artery, signed a secret agreement with France and Israel to attack Egypt.

Despite military successes, Great Britain and France faced strong pressure from the USA, the USSR and the UN and were forced to withdraw their troops. The failure of the operation forced Eden to resign.

The Suez Crisis greatly shook Britain’s position in the world: it became obvious that the country had lost its status as a world leader and became heavily dependent on the United States. This only accelerated the process of the loss of Britain’s colonies, which began under the father of Elizabeth II.

Starting from Ghana, other British colonies in Africa declare their independence one by one. Decolonization is supported by Harold Macmillan, who succeeded Eden as prime minister. Speaking in Cape Town, the politician admitted: “The wind of change is blowing over this continent. And the UK has to reckon with it.”

The collapse of the British Empire finally took shape with the transfer of Hong Kong to the PRC in 1997. It was replaced by the Commonwealth of Nations, which consists of only 16 countries.

Her Majesty’s Greatest Mistake

In 1966, the UK was rocked by a terrible tragedy when rocks collapsed at a coal mine in the village of Aberfan in South Wales. The landslide in a matter of moments covered the school, located at the foot of the mountain. The victims were 28 adults and 116 children, most of whom were 7-10 years old. Aberfan lost an entire generation.

Fearing that her presence would stall rescue operations, Elizabeth sent her husband Philip to Aberfan. “People will be distracted by me and may not notice some poor child who could be found under the rubble,” the queen explained.

Elizabeth visited the affected village only eight days after the tragedy and regretted her choice for a long time. “I feel like one of the biggest mistakes of my entire reign was not coming to Aberfan earlier,” she told those close to her.

Irish turmoil

In the late 1960s, movement for the region’s independence from Great Britain and its unification with the Republic of Ireland gained momentum in Northern Ireland. The conditional date of the beginning of the bloody conflict between the “republicans” and “loyalists”, called “troubles”, is considered to be 1969. Then the supporters of both camps staged a multi-day street battle in the Northern Irish city of Londonderry.

The Head of Government of Northern Ireland asked London to bring in British troops. In 1971, the separatist Irish Republican Army killed the first British soldier. In total, over 38 years of the conflict, 3.5 thousand people died on both sides.

Bloodshed in Londonderry

On January 30, 1972, the British military gunned down a peaceful demonstration in Londonderry. 13 unarmed protesters were killed, including teenagers and one priest. Eyewitnesses said that the military shot in cold blood those who tried to escape or help the wounded, and did not let the ambulances near.

This event, which went down in history as “Bloody Sunday”, angered not only the Irish separatists, but also many British politicians. Of particular outrage was the fact that in the same year, Lieutenant Colonel Derek Wilford, who commanded the soldiers who shot the protesters, was awarded the Order of the British Empire by Elizabeth II.

May 4, 1979 for the first time in the history of Great Britain, Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister, for her toughness and inflexibility, she received the nickname “Iron Lady”. Under her leadership, Great Britain entered the war with Argentina over the Falkland Islands. The success of the military campaign became a kind of revenge for the Suez crisis and largely determined the premiership of Thatcher, who is still considered one of the brightest and most successful British politicians to this day.

On the face of it, Thatcher and Elizabeth—two women at the head of Britain, born just six months apart—should get along. However, the biographers of both and the press tend to believe that the relationship between them was extremely tense.

In 1986, The Sunday Times reported, citing aides to Elizabeth II, that the queen was very dissatisfied with her prime minister’s policies. Thatcher categorically refused to impose sanctions against apartheid in South Africa, which, in the opinion of the Queen, undermined Britain’s relations with other countries in the region and could turn into the death of the Commonwealth. In Buckingham Palace, these media reports, of course, denied.

Crown at gunpoint

In the meantime, “troubles” in Ireland did not subside. On August 27, 1979, IRA fighters blew up the yacht of Elizabeth II’s cousin, 79-year-old Lord Louis Mountbatten, who, along with his family, was vacationing in a summer house in the north-west of Ireland and went fishing that day. Together with Mountbatten, his grandson, his daughter’s mother-in-law and an Irish boy who worked on a yacht were killed. On the same day, the IRA blew up a British convoy in the northeast of Ireland, killing 18 troops.

On October 12, 1984, Irish extremists bombed the Grand Hotel in Brighton, where the British Conservative Party convention was being held. Five people were killed and more than 30 were injured. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was miraculously unharmed in the attack.

The long-awaited reconciliation

In the 1990s, a peace process begins, the main result of which is the signing of the Belfast Agreement in 1998. In 2011, Queen Elizabeth II became the first British monarch in 100 years to visit the Republic of Ireland. And in 2012, the Queen first met with the former head of the IRA, who led the group during the murder of her cousin, and shook his hand.

“These events touched all of us, many of us personally, and remain a painful legacy. We can never forget those who died or were injured and their families,” the Queen said in Dublin. “Looking back, we all understand that we should have done something differently or not done at all.”

Along with Britain and the world, the British monarchy itself has been rapidly changing. Under Elizabeth II, it is becoming more and more open: excursions to Buckingham Palace begin to be led, and the main events from the life of members of the royal family become public and broadcast to the whole world.

Elizabeth II never voiced her political position or criticized the actions of her government. But this does not mean that the British queen ignored important events in her native country and in the world: her words were always imbued with aspiration for peace, they encouraged the people in moments of hardship and deprivation and gave hope for a brighter future.

“I don’t lead you into battle and I don’t write laws. But I’m still capable of something. I can give my heart and my devotion to these old islands and the people of the United Kingdom,” said the monarch.

However, it would be a mistake to assume that the role of Elizabeth II in the political life of Great Britain is purely ceremonial. The Guardian newspaper conducted an investigation, during which it found out that the queen and her lawyers managed to lobby for changes in legislation when it was in the interests of the royal family.

To do this, they used the “royal assent” procedure, according to which Parliament must obtain the consent of the monarch to consider a bill if it could affect the privileges and private interests of the royal family. For example, according to National Archives documents, in the 1970s, Elizabeth II’s personal lawyer pressured ministers to change the Financial Transparency Bill so as not to publicize the monarch’s shareholding.

On April 9, 2021, Elizabeth II’s husband, Prince Philip, died at the age of 99, two months before his centenary. According to their son, Prince Andrew, the loss left a huge void in the Queen’s life.

However, just four days after the death of her husband, the British monarch has already returned to her royal duties. She also showed steadfastness and endurance at Philip’s funeral, taking with her to the farewell ceremony a photograph from Malta, where they lived before her ascension to the throne.

In June 2022, Elizabeth II celebrated the platinum anniversary – 70 years from the date of ascension to the throne. The celebrations were accompanied by a military parade, concerts and numerous exhibitions dedicated to the Queen and the Crown.

But the celebrations were soon overshadowed by the political crisis that broke out in the kingdom. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who only managed to avoid a no-confidence vote due to lockdown-breaking parties on Downing Street, was embroiled in a new scandal: his close associate and protégé Chris Pincher was accused of drunken debauchery and harassment of visitors to an elite Conservative club. It turned out that Pincher had been repeatedly complained about before, and Johnson not only knew about the accusations, but also made fun of the behavior of his subordinate. The scandal forced the premier to resign on 7 July.

Johnson was replaced as head of the ruling Conservative Party by former Foreign Secretary Liz Truss. On September 6, Elizabeth II held audiences with both at the Scottish castle of Balmoral and appointed Truss to the post of Prime Minister of Great Britain.

Death of the Queen

The audiences seem to have worn the Queen down. The doctors recommended that Elizabeth II rest and cancel the meeting of the Privy Council, scheduled for the next day, September 7. But despite the break, the queen’s condition continued to deteriorate, which caused serious concern among doctors. On September 8, the heir to the throne, Prince Charles, and the rest of the Queen’s children, as well as her grandchildren, Princes William and Harry, left for Balmoral.

On the same day, Elizabeth II died at the age of 97. As expected, the next day, Prince Charles will be proclaimed the king of Great Britain, after which he will soon go on a mourning tour throughout the kingdom and meet with the leadership of the regions, as well as with ordinary subjects. The Queen’s body will be moved from Scotland to the Palace of Westminster. Elizabeth II’s state funeral will take place at Westminster Abbey 10 days after her death, on September 18.
