Via de la Plata, or the Silver Road in Spain

Along with the famous routes of Camino de Santiago and Camino de Cid, which we recently talked about, there are other roads on the Iberian Peninsula that will help you look at the Spanish realities dear to your heart from the other side. For example, Vía de La Plata, or the Silver Road, is an old road along which caravans and pilgrims moved from north to south and in the opposite direction across Spain.

Via de la Plata lies in the western part of Spain and connects the city of Astorga in the province of León with Merida, located in Extremadura. Its “elongated” version originates in Seville and stretches to the Asturian Gijón. By the way, at a certain moment you can choose where to go next: turn in Astorga onto the French Kings Road (Camino francés) or in Ourense continue northwest to Santiago de Compostela. If we take this option into account, it is believed that the Via de la Plata passes through four autonomous communities of Spain – these are Andalusia (the province of Seville), Extremadura (the provinces of Caceres and Badajoz), Castile and Leon (the provinces of Salamanca and Zamora) and Galicia (the provinces of Ourense and La Coruña).

Despite the fact that the route is called of the Silver Route , Via de la Plata has nothing to do with the silver. Yes, during the time of Roman rule, silver was indeed mined on the peninsula, which was then delivered to port cities. But Via de la Plata is not a Roman road, its name, according to one of the versions, comes from the Arabic word “al-balat” (al-balat), which translates as “paved road”, that is, a road of stone.

However, scientists still find a Roman trace in the history of Via de la Plata: it is believed that the Romans, firstly, sought to conquer the northern tribes of Vaccaei, Galleci and Asturs, to which they decided to lay a direct path, and secondly, they wanted to connect two strategically important mining areas – gold mines in Las Medulas not far from the city of Ponferrada in Castile and Leon and the Rio Tinto region, where copper, gold, silver, etc. were mined, in Andalusia. It is said that originally the road bore the official name of Via Delapidata – in fact, a stone-paved road.

As far as the landscape of the Via de la Plata is concerned, it is quite a road that is easy to walk on. Narrow paths give way to wide paved areas, and in terms of ups and downs, Via de la Plata is perhaps more forgiving than the same French Kings Road. It is more difficult to pass through larger cities, since the road there is not marked as noticeably as outside them. But this is easily solved if you ask where to go next, from knowledgeable people or at the tourist office.
It should also be taken into account that, for example, in the same Extremadura there are areas where there are no settlements at all. Therefore, the period of movement along the Via de la Plata must be planned in such a way as not to walk under either the exhausting summer sun or the lingering spring rain. The ideal time to travel along this route can be considered the end of August and the beginning of September. The heat subsides, the harvest season begins in Spain, and there is a chance to catch the bright celebration of this event. In general, bird watchers will also like walking along Via de la Plata: just at this time they fly from north to south along the “migration corridor”, which coincides with this route.

Via de la Plata will delight those who are not averse to admiring the varied landscape: the vineyards and olive groves of Andalusia and Extremadura give way to fruitful fields in Salamanca and Zamora, where you can also see oak thickets. In Galicia, eucalyptus forests await wanderers. We also advise you to pay attention to pastures called dehesas – these are oak groves specially adapted for grazing cows. Some of these ecosystems are up to three thousand years old.

Via de la Plata is sure to please those who appreciate non-touristy trails, like to be alone with nature and improve their Spanish – due to the fact that the route is not as popular as the Camino de Santiago, English won’t be enough here. A great opportunity to practice the language!
