Day care workers at Robins Air Force Base forced children to fight each other, feds say
Two former day care workers forced children to fight each other on several occasions at a center at Robins Air Force Base in Georgia, and the facility’s former director kept quiet about the abuse, federal prosecutors say. (Edward Aspera/U.S. Air Force)
(Tribune News Service) — Two former day care workers forced children to fight each other on several occasions at a center at an Air Force base in Georgia, and the facility’s former director kept quiet about the abuse, federal prosecutors say.
While under the care of the three women, at least 14 children endured physical cruelty at the day care at Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, according to court documents.
Prosecutors say the events took place in January and February of 2021 and that this is an ongoing investigation.
Zhanay Flynn, 27, of Centerville, and Antanesha Fritz, 29, of Alabama are accused of hitting and kicking children, making them hit each other, spraying children in the face with cleaning solution and more while working at the day care, according to an Oct. 11 news release from the Justice Department.
The former workers and day care center director were charged in a 30-count indictment. Flynn and Fritz face 18 counts of first-degree child cruelty, six counts of second-degree child cruelty, three counts of simple battery, and one count of failing to report suspected child abuse.
The former director, Latona Lambert, 51, of Florida faces one count of failing to report suspected child abuse, according to the Justice Department.
Information about the women’s legal representation was not immediately available.
While the indictment does not specify the ages of the children subjected to abuse, Robins Air Force Base provides child care services to children up to 12 years old, according to its website.
The Air Force base said in a statement to McClatchy News that “properly caring for our Airmen and their families is of utmost importance.”
“Our Airmen should have confidence in the care provided at our Child Development Center,” the statement added.
“We are fully supporting the ongoing investigation and reviewing processes to ensure the appropriate measures are in place to safeguard our children.”
The fights
During at least a dozen separate occasions, Flynn and Fritz caused pairs and groups of children to fight, hit and hurt each other in early 2021, the indictment states.
The two women were ultimately removed from the day care classroom and ended up resigning, the base told McClatchy News. Additionally, Lambert was removed from her position as director.
In some cases during the fights, Flynn and Fritz are accused of grabbing the hands of children involved, and physically forcing them to strike each other in the face, according to the indictment.
One child, specified as “Minor Victim 5,” was involved in several of the forced fights, investigators say. This child’s legs and wrists were “seized” by Flynn and Fritz, who had them kick and strike other children, according to the indictment.
Other allegations
On one occasion, Flynn and Fritz pushed a child to the ground, resulting in them hitting their face on a “hard item,” investigators say.
When the child cried as a result, they were forced into a “small enclosure” as punishment, the indictment says.
During a separate instance, this same child, specified as “Minor Victim 3,” was forced to fight another child before the women sprayed a cleaning liquid in their face, according to investigators.
Flynn and Fritz also sprayed other children in the head and face with a cleaning solution, the indictment says.
Other allegations of abuse include how Flynn and Fritz lifted a cot with a sleeping child on it, resulting in the child falling to the ground, the release states. They’re also accused of shaking a child while threatening to hit them, kicking a child, stepping on a child’s leg, hitting a child in the head with a book and more, prosecutors say.
“Parents and guardians of children who were under the care of the defendants and have concerns about their child are encouraged to contact the Robins Air Force Base Family Advocacy Program at 478-327-8398 during regular business hours,” the release states.
If convicted, Flynn and Fritz face years in prison for the varying counts against them, according to the release. Lambert faces a maximum of one year in prison if convicted on the count of failing to report suspected child abuse, prosecutors say.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Georgia is involved in the case’s prosecution. The allegations of abuse are being investigated by the Air Force Office of Special Investigations and Air Force Security Forces alongside the FBI, the release says.
Robins Air Force Base is about 20 miles south of Macon.

The Warner Robins Museum of Aviation is the second largest aerospace museum in the US Air Force.
Located one and a half hours from Atlanta on I75 south outside of Macon. And this museum is a real storehouse of interesting exhibits. Judge for yourself:

The museum is located next to Robins Air Force Base and contains 93 different aircraft, including the R-71A Blackbird (s/n 61-7958), which set an absolute speed record of 3529.56 km/h on July 28, 1976. The museum has five buildings, located on an area of 21 hectares. Open all year round and completely free! Well, isn’t it a miracle? To inspect carefully all the exhibits, you need to boldly lay the whole day.

— Oh God! – said the head of the prison, when Max was brought into his office. “What, they decided to turn us into an orphanage for juvenile delinquents?”
“Don’t be fooled by his appearance, chief,” the deputy said, tossing papers for him to sign on the table. He is a real criminal. Killed a man in New Orleans.

— So why did he sit down? For murder?
– For illegal possession of weapons. He got away from the murder: self-defense. The assistant spat chewing tobacco into a spittoon. “That guy found him in some lady’s bedroom.
“I was that lady’s bodyguard, Chief,” Max remarked.
— That didn’t give you the right to kill a person.
– I had to. He rushed at me with a knife. I had to defend myself. I was without clothes.
– Exactly, boss! The sheriff’s assistant chuckled. – In the buff.
— In my opinion, typical self-defense, — said the head of the prison. Why was this stupid accusation put on the guy?
“He killed Darcy’s cousin,” the assistant replied instantly.
– Ah! “That explained everything. The Darcy family are important birds in New Orleans. “Then you got off lightly. By the way, how old are you?
– Nineteen.
— Aren’t you too young to be a New Orleans lady’s bodyguard? How did you get to her?
– I needed a job when I left the army.
And she needed a man with a good reaction. And my reaction is good.

The warden went to the door and called out, looking out:

Max couldn’t hide his surprise.

Max arrived in New Orleans just in time for the holiday. The streets were crowded with noisy, careless crowds of people, and the festive mood was involuntarily transmitted to him.
He decided to stay here for a couple of days before heading to West Texas.
Having put his horse in the stable, he rented a room in a small hotel and went in search of entertainment. Six hours later, he rolled a couple of tens and it was done. He lost the money, the horse, everything but the clothes.
“That’s all for me, gentlemen,” he said. “Now I’m going to fetch the horse.”
One of the players looked up from the game.
— May I ask what you intend to do next?
Max shrugged:
— I don’t know. I’ll probably find a job.
The player pointed to Max’s revolver.
— Are you good with it?
— Not bad.
The player stood up lazily.
— Lady luck has been unkind to you today.
“You contributed to this,” Max replied.
The player’s hand went to the pocket. And the next second he froze, looking down the barrel of Max’s gun.
“I think I have a job for you,” the player said with a respectful smile.
– If you agree to work for a woman.
“Work is work,” answered Max.

Max has never seen such a room. Everything was white: the silk-lined walls, the window curtains, the furniture, the canopy over the bed, even the carpet.
Is this the young man? – sounded someone’s voice.
Max turned around. The woman struck him even more than the room. She was tall, almost the same height as him, and her face was young, very young. But this impression was created mainly because of her hair: it was long, almost to the waist, and bluish-white, like threads of silk.
“He’s very capable, Miss Pluviere,” said his recent card partner. “Besides, he is a veteran of the recent war with Spain.
Miss Pluviere casually waved her hand, interrupting his explanation.
– I have no doubts about his abilities, since you recommend him. But it’s pretty dirty!
– I’ve just arrived from Florida, ma’am. Max finally found the gift of speech.
