Cape Verde, Boa Vista Island reviews, advice, recommendations

Republic of Cape Verde, which until 1986. officially translated into Russian as the Republic of the Island of Cape Verde, to this day remains a little-studied place by tourists. The most accessible information about Cape Verde is that it is a group of islands located in West Africa at a distance of 600 km from the coast of Senegal and washed on all sides by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The start of the popularity of Cape Verde at one time was laid by the barefoot diva Cesaria Evora, a performer of morna, fado and modinha to the accompaniment of the piano, ukulele, accordion and violin.

However, major players in the tourism market already understand the whole prospect of Cape Verde for lovers of light Africa (after all, it is a former colony of Portugal) and a measured holiday among white beaches, so they are trying to secure their niche in time. For example, the TUI Group and Thomas Cook Group, the RIU Hotels & Resorts hotel chain, as well as the air carriers Transavia Airlines, TAP Portugal, TUI and Brussels Airlines, have already firmly established themselves here, intensively expanding their flight map.

Flying with Brussels Airlines

From November 2018 Brussels Airlines has expanded its flight map to Cape Verde and now offers not only the route Brussels-o.Sal (the most touristic island of Cape Verde), but also Brussels-o.Boa Vista. In this connection, Brussels Airlines often makes offers that cannot be refused, posting a price tag of 110 € round trip, or even lower. The average cost of a flight can be up to 600 € in both directions, which is the lion’s share of the budget for the entire trip.

Brussels Airlines adjacent flight – after unloading tourists on Boa Vista, the plane with the tourists remaining on board, as well as departing new ones, will depart for Sal, where it will make a stopover for 1 hour, during which everyone will unload with a manual baggage from the plane, there will be a crew change and preparation of the board for the flight to Brussels. Thus, the return flight takes just over 7 hours.

The first thing that greets tourists from the windows of Boa Vista is wide and endlessly long sandy beaches, kilometers of peace and quiet. Beaches are the hallmark of this island. The wow effect also adds a turquoise color to the water.

Rabil Airport Boa Vista

Rabil International Airport is the real air harbor of the island in every sense of the word “air”. Small, compact, open to all winds and homely. The waiting and moving areas for passengers are almost completely open-air, protecting their heads from the heat only with a stretched canvas.

All this creates extraordinary lightness and freshness at the airport, allowing you to enjoy the air masses of the nearby ocean without restrictions, immediately and in full, the lighting is provided mainly by natural sunlight. Airport staff will kindly direct you to the necessary window: visa or visa on arrival. The whole procedure takes a small amount of time.

Visa issues

Upon arrival in Cape Verde, effective January 1, 2019, the total cost of the visa has changed. Previously, it was 25€. Now, a mandatory tax on transport security in the amount of 31 € is introduced to it. The total amount that must be paid to the officer in the booth in order to obtain a visa on arrival, , is now 56€ ! Payment is made in cash to the officer, about which you receive a receipt with all the necessary seals. Surrender is issued.

Currency transactions and settlement systems

The national currency of Cape Verde is the escudo (CVE), which on price tags, in price lists and menus is simply denoted by the dollar sign $. Therefore, let’s say if you received a bill of $ 400 for a portion of dinner, then it means not the American dollar, but the escudo.

It is not recommended to take US dollars with you, they are not accepted here at all, or the exchange rate is extremely unfavorable.

Euro is accepted everywhere and goes along with the escudo. The official rate of escudo to euro is always fixed and is:

1€ = 110 CVE

The bank fee for exchanging euros for escudos is 300 escudos. If you want to exchange the remaining escudos for euros, you will have to pay an additional commission.

It is most advantageous to pay in national currency. Don’t be surprised if your change is given in euros, that’s fine. You can pay with credit cards, but not everywhere. Both VISA and MasterCard are accepted.

Sal Rei – the cultural center of the island and its new capital

Leaving the airport, you will not find any other public transport (there is, but does not go here), except for a taxi.

It is possible to rent a car, this is 25€ per day, not including additional commission fees.

City Center of Sal Rei, Boa Vista:

A taxi ride to the center of Sal Rei lasts an average of 15 minutes and costs 1000 escudos or 10 euros. Here, for the first time, we are faced with the benefits of paying in escudos, since 10 euros is 1100 escudos, no one will give 100 escudos back from 10 euros, as it happened, and the saved 100 escudos is as much as one and a half liters of bottled water. When local taxi drivers see that you have just arrived, they will be very intractable to give you a price, but be aware that you can bargain at the airport-Sal Rei distance or back up to 700 escudos or 7 euros. You can exchange currency both at the airport and at the bank branch of the city.

Sal Rei is a very small fishing town within walking distance to the ocean.

Despite its compact size, it has its own police station with a patrol car for security:

As well as a hospital, as many as 3 schools (one of them primary) and several churches:

  • Catholic (the official religion of Cabo -Verde), which is located in the town square
  • Protestant
  • indeterminate in the neighborhoods of local residents, which are hidden away from the tourist eye.

Let’s look at a lesson at the school:

There are also kindergartens, a children’s capoeira sports club, a post office and a port.

Oh, it seems that we are invited to visit the local kindergarten:

Quite cozy, clean and smells like a future dinner:

souvenirs to local gift shops. The streets of the city are quite safe for walking, except for the slums, while the city itself falls asleep closer to midnight.

It is highly recommended to get to know the locals. Only they can show you the outbacks and gateways of the city, tell you about life on the island with its pressing problems (for example, lack of water and electricity), and also become your true pass to the world of discounts “for your own”.

Internet and communications

The first and most important question of any visitor: what about the Internet?

Answer: he is, but hardly in roaming.

The Ukrainian operator Lifecell could not even identify the country where their subscriber arrived, greeting simply: “Lifecell welcomes you abroad!”. Internet in roaming is not available for Lifecell. Therefore, it is better to clarify whether it will be in your case.

The best solution is a local SIM card. No documents are required for purchase.

There are only two mobile operators here: Unitel T+ and CVTelecom .

It doesn’t matter which one to choose. Both offer almost similar tariff plans and traffic volumes. The only advice: do not buy SIM cards in grocery stores. The owners of these shops and the staff in them are cunning Chinese who came to Boa Vista with their families and launched their family business in the tourist places of the island. They will be able to sell you a SIM card, but they will not help you with choosing and activating a tariff plan, with consultation and solving problems. They do not speak English, French, Russian at all. They just smile and nod. Portuguese is known only by ear and has a very limited vocabulary, they do not know how to read it.

Therefore, it is better to go directly to the Unitel T+ or CVTelecom subscriber service center. Fortunately, they are located in neighboring buildings. Just look for the sign.

Purely subjective, the Unitel T+ office is always empty, and CVTelecom is full of locals with a lot of questions. Therefore, the choice fell on Unitel T +.

Unitel T+ SIM card costs 250 Escudos and includes 200 Mb of Internet. Internet packages start at 1.5 GB (price 1200 escudos), 3 GB and 4.5 GB.

Please note that the Unitel T+ operator’s voice menu is only in Portuguese.

In the customer service center, the staff speaks English and will solve many of your problems, set up communication, help with choosing a tariff plan and activating it. There are no mods for sale. It is worth considering the opening hours of the communication salon. Day off – Sunday.

Unitel T+ coverage in Boavista is excellent. Almost everywhere the 3G indicator was displayed.

What and where to eat.

The island’s cuisine is predominantly European. It is full of seafood, fast food and pasta. The minimum check is from 500 CVE and does not include alcohol. It should be borne in mind that in the late afternoon, numerous taverns along the beaches stop working as kitchens and appear only in the form of bars.

Cachupa is the national dish of Cape Verde. Kachupa is a very hearty, complex dish based on vegetables, root vegetables, corn and legumes with the addition of meat or fish products, as a result of which it comes out quite fatty and heavy on the digestive system. There is no specific recipe for kachupa; each establishment can present its visitors with their own view on the gastronomic traditions of the islands.

Sal Rei has a restaurant Cabo cafe & restaurant with TripAdvisor rating for 2015 and 2016. Just walk up to the port along the road from the church in the main square, keeping to the right. The restaurant is closed in the morning and afternoon.

Also a good restaurant Blue Marlin, located on the main square of the city opposite the church.

Almost all products on the island are imported from Senegal. Therefore, they cannot be cheap.

Souvenir products.

Souvenirs are represented extensively and densely on the island. The vast majority of these are carnival masks, musical instruments, national costumes of mediocre quality, which are sewn by local dressmakers right on the street, paintings, figurines, national symbols and decorations.

Dressmakers work on Singer machines:

African masks are divided into antiques, which have some kind of cultural value (respectively, the price can be hundreds and hundreds of euros) and ordinary traditional souvenirs. Bargaining is possible and desirable, which may allow for some products to bring down the price by almost half.

The local wine and coffee are well known.

Numerous owners of souvenir shops can arrange an interesting tour not only in the city of Sal Rei, but also around the island. So, for example, the average price of a day trip around the island is from 60 € per person and more. This includes a seat in a jeep, as well as lunch at a restaurant along the way. However, we managed to find an option for 25€ with the same conditions. The itinerary is traditional.

Please note that if you want to go on a whale watching tour that migrates through the islands of Cape Verde, then you should arrive no earlier than March. The same goes for turtles.

The most visited place on the island is the rusty skeleton of the Spanish cargo ship Cabo de Santa Maria. After the ship ran aground, local tugboats tried several times to free it, but all attempts ended in failure.

Now the old abandoned ship is a real symbol of a miniature island nation. The beach near which the ship ran aground is covered with fine white sand.

The city of Sal Rei itself is not as simple as it might seem at first glance. It has several interesting streets where the daily life of local residents takes place and where a tourist would hardly want to go alone. Having made friends with the locals, they will gladly show you where their primary and secondary schools are, you can look into the classroom during the lesson, see the local laundry, what the local market is like, where the anglers bring their catch in the morning to sell, and also, perhaps , even agree to escort to the barracks – a kind of district No. 9, where, away from the tourist eyes, locals live in completely different conditions and Africa is closer to the real one.

The locals are extremely friendly, no Egyptian pestering and insolence. The vast majority of these are people from Senegal who came to Cape Verde for a long ruble.

Cape Verde is considered one of the best places to surf. Along the coast, you can easily find training points (from 300 € per hour for individual training), as well as equipment rental.

On the whole, the life of the islands boils slowly, the philosophy of the following content is tacitly captured: everything that can be done today, put off for tomorrow. And if you start to rush and push someone, you will hear the main motto of Cape Verde: No stress!

Post Office:

Souvenir Shop Owner Mora (Sal Rei Central Square):

Feel free to contact him for help. And if you agree to drink tea with him right in his workshop, you can get to know the local life better by hearing interesting stories.

Local boys, always playful and resourceful:

No stress reigns everywhere, even among animals. No one is in a hurry, this is not Europe for you:

Cape Verde is that rare combination of primeval nature and a relatively European level of service. Those who come here are in a hurry to take a break from civilization and explore the unique underwater world of the islands. In addition, Cape Verde is one of the world’s sport fishing centers. If you want to stay longer (after all, a visa is still issued for a month), then talk to the locals about renting apartments, which can be found for 150 euros per month.
