Texas Major Oil Cities – Financial Encyclopedia

Texas peaked in 1972. After that, production declined until the early 2000s. Production has more than doubled since January 1999, when the state produced over 39 million barrels.

1.59 mined in Texas in 2018billion barrels, the highest year of oil production in US history. According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), US oil production was 10.99 million barrels of oil per day. The contribution of Texas to this figure is significant.

            Key Findings

            • 2018 was the highest year of oil production in Texas, with 1.59 billion barrels of oil produced in the state. The state accounted for 40% of the oil produced in the US last year.
            • The two main sources of oil in Texas are the Eagle Ford Shale and the Permian Basin.
            • Texas’ top oil cities include big names like Houston and Dallas, as well as the underrated Midland, Texas.
            • The Midland has only 134,000 people but has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the US at 1.7% on a median income of $75,000.

            Oil and the Texas economy

The boom led to a decline in foreign oil imports to the US. Most of the oil fields in Texas come from two formations: the Eagle Ford Shale and the Permian Basin. Texas accounted for 40% of the oil produced in the US in 2018, producing an average of 4.4 million barrels of oil per day.

As of September 2019, Eagle Ford produces 1.4 million barrels of oil per day, while the Permian Basin produces 4.4 million barrels of oil per day. The use of hydraulic fracturing, or “fractifiers” and horizontal drilling penetrated previously unattainable oil taps, supporting a surge in Texan oil production.

Counties in southeast and central Texas have benefited economically from the oil surge as employment rates, median income and home sales in individual cities have skyrocketed, while other cities with a long history of oil and industry seek to further branching compared to recent production rates.

Many have benefited from a new source of wealth – oil companies, landowners who leased their land to drillers in exchange for exorbitant monthly rents, and the local economy of fracking cities. The following are the Texas cities that helped drive the highest levels of oil production, resulting in higher US oil production than Saudi Arabia.

            Houston

Houston, the largest city in Texas, has a population of 2.3 million, making it the fourth most populous city in the country. Houston, already home to the headquarters of several oil and gas companies, is undergoing major changes in its industrial gas complexes.

BP, ConocoPhillips and Shell are the main employers of oil companies in the Houston Energy Corridor. The average salary for a qualified power engineer living in Houston is $200,000 per year. Despite layoffs in the oil industry taking place in Houston, the city is still the world’s energy capital.

Houston is home to the second largest public company in Texas, Phillips 66, which generated $111. 5 billion in revenue in 2018, and ConocoPhillips, which generated $36 billion. Oilfield services giant Schlumberger Limited also operates in Houston.

            Austin

The oil boom has attracted 300 companies to Austin, including Jones Energy and Brigham Exploration, which are hiring residents in oil investment, exploration, drilling and production technologies. Oil drilling businesses are aided by access to former alumni and research centers at the University of Texas at Austin.

The Petroleum and Geosystems Division has provided an educational base for companies to be further equipped with the latest technologies when entering the field. As part of the scholarship program, oil company Statoil ASA worked with the university to begin investing $5 million in the school’s graduates.

            Dallas

Energy Transfer LP, a major oil energy company, is headquartered in Dallas. In 2018, the company received about $54 billion. HollyFrontier Corporation is also based in Dallas, with $17. 7 billion in 2018 revenue. Oil extraction helped this city move away from the cotton and railroad industries. Oil tycoon and billionaire H.L. Hunt lived in Dallas and left a long legacy for the city.

            San Antonio

San Antonio, the second most populous city in Texas and the seventh in the United States, is home to the South Texas Oilfield Expo and many oil companies, including Valero Energy Corporation, which generated $117 billion in 2018 revenue. There are more than 80 of them. Gas and oil companies located in San Antonio. One of the city’s largest employers is Valero’s Ultramar Diamond Shamrock Corporation refinery.

            Midland

Located in Midland County, Midland has a population of 134,000 and is located in the Permian Basin. The city has experienced an increase in population and average wages after profiting from oil drilling. The new wealth of Midland has caused a population growth that was among the highest in the country in 2013.

The Midland School District has been able to open new teaching positions, although some teachers have left their jobs in search of higher paying opportunities in the oil fields, where even inexperienced workers can earn over $70,000.
