INFANTS

Infant Program – 6 weeks to 12 months

Schedules offered:  5-day only (Monday through Friday)

At University Station Academy, we understand how delicate and complex the early stages of life are for an infant. Providing a warm, positive environment and establishing a relationship with the world is vital to their development. In addition to cuddling, nurturing and attending to your child’s basic needs, our teachers are also making sure each child has the ability to experience activities that will help them enhance their physical, language, cognitive, social and emotional skills through activities like story time, music and simple games.

Toddler

Each day is enriched with hands-on, discovery-based experiences emphasizing all aspects of your child’s growth and development.  Discovering through play is a natural process for a young child.  The world around them is most naturally deciphered through play.  Interwoven into their play are opportunities to experience new social and emotional situations, as well as develop language skills, physical milestones and new concepts. All of their experiences throughout the day are supported by warm, knowledgeable Early Childhood Educators, who provide a sense of security through a predictable schedule and smooth transitions.

Partnering with families is a cornerstone of our Toddler Program.  We place high value on establishing and maintaining constant two-way communication with parents. In partnership, we provide consistency between home and school.  Each day, children are invited to participate in a wide variety of discovery and play based activities that are developmentally appropriate. We believe that through play, children experience the joy of discovery and learning for themselves. Our teachers provide guidance and support as they work to enhance children’s play within the classroom.

Preschool

Preschool Education Program

2 yrs. – 4 yrs.

Preschool children are very inquisitive and their confidence is growing daily. Because preschoolers are eager to learn, they need the opportunity to develop in an environment that is based upon their unique development and learning styles. This type of learning is referred to as “Developmentally Appropriate Practices.”  University Station Academy’s preschool program is based on this very important concept that will consider each child’s strengths, interests, and needs.

To support this style of learning and development, The Creative Curriculum®  program is used in the classroom.  This curriculum is a high quality early childhood program designed to develop your child’s education skills proven in over 19 years of research and field testing.  Our program offers your child a classroom environment that stimulates their development through learning centers. The curriculum offers activities in each of the learning centers so that your child will learn math, language, fine and gross motor skills, and computer experience preparing them for future success in school.

Learning to read begins in a print-rich environment long before children can interpret words. Our children are provided with many opportunities to see how reading and writing are useful before they are instructed in basic skills, such as identifying letters, sounds, and word.  As her skills develop, your child will have the opportunity to practice writing skills by creating journals about her day, writing simple stories and labeling art projects. You may even get a hand written note from your child telling you all about the activities that she learned at University Station Academy.

USA believes that you should have the opportunity to meet and discuss your child’s accomplishments with our teachers. Parent-teacher conferences allow the teacher and the parent to review the growth of your child’s knowledge skills in specific subject areas.  The use of a portfolio system, a record of your child’s process of learning (how your child goes about learning), how they think, question, and interact intellectually, emotionally and socially with others are all a focus of your parent-teacher conference. You will receive a collection of your child’s work exhibiting their efforts and achievements throughout the year at University Station Academy.

Afterschool

USA offers complimentary afterschool pick-up for children enrolled in our aftercare program.  We pick-up at the following elementary schools:  Cooper City, Fox Trail, Silver Ridge, Pasadena Lakes, Boulevard Heights, Champion Charter, and Renaissance Charter.

School-age children are very interested in interacting, negotiating, and feeling a sense of independence.  University Station Academy’s school-age program creates an organized club-like atmosphere. Your child can choose from a variety of carefully planned activities including arts and crafts, music and culture, reading, writing, and cooking. The club-like atmosphere is designed to offer your child the freedom to choose the projects that best interest them while giving them a sense of independence. Our teachers will help your child with homework after school or your child may just choose to relax and have a snack with her friends. They are able to explore their interests and to interact with other children with shared interests.

University Station Academy strives to build a sense of respect for the community and cultural surroundings. We invite all families to participate in field trips, share their cultural heritage, or to participate in any other aspect of our program. Parents are a welcome addition to our daily interactions at University Station Academy.

Our Camp

Our Summer Programs uphold the mission of providing an environment that fosters character development and personal growth in young people.  Summer Programs are “counselor-centered” to enhance relational experiences.  Counselors are assigned small groups, allowing for close, caring relationships to develop.  Daily activities incorporate four areas of personal growth: physical, intellectual, emotional, and social.

Safety & Security

Safety Measures

Your child’s safety is of uppermost importance at University Station Academy. Our locations adhere to the highest possible standards of safety, from our classrooms to our playgrounds.

Security

University Station Academy is designed specifically for young children.  From infants to school age, your child will be surrounded by an age appropriate classroom environment.  All areas including bathrooms, sinks, drinking fountains, and furniture are designed for each age group.

For your child’s safety, a security entrance is provided.  Cameras are installed throughout the facility and are monitored by our directors.  In addition, a code will be assigned to parents to clock their child in/out of the center.  No child shall be released to any person not listed in our enrollment documentation.  Picture identification is required for the release of any child.

Security Measures: What You Want to Know

Security is an important issue for all parents.  As University Station Academy continues to keep your child safe and secure, here are some behind-the-scenes aspects you’ll want to know about:

Electronic Security

Our facilities include secured coded entries so that only staff and families with the code can access our building.  In addition to that, all doors are kept not only shut at all times but are also locked from the outside.  This means unauthorized visitors are never a risk to your child’s safety.

Security Cameras

Every classroom has security cameras for front desk monitoring. The management can easily observe classroom activities throughout the day.

Our Mission

Safety & Security

We Care

Safety & Security

We Care

In our classrooms

University Station Academy goes the extra mile to design classrooms to maximize safety and supervision:

Our cribs are built for maximum viewing on all sides and do not contain any materials hazardous to a child’s sleeping habits.

Our doors are padded at the hinges so little fingers don’t get pinched when doors are opened and closed between classrooms.

Our lobby entrance is secure with security cameras as well as door handles that require codes.

Our food preparation and storage area is monitored for safety.  To assure your child’s safety while in our premises, we provide safety drill training every 30 days for tornado and fire emergencies.

Tempered Glass

Glass sections inside of our facilities may make it easy for you to see your child, but they also double as a safety measure. Any activity performed in an University Station Academy classroom is easily visible through these glass walls, ensuring the utmost safety and security of children.  Your child can also observe the teachers and activities  happening in the surrounding rooms, which makes transitioning into a more advanced room smoother for child and parent.

Hiring Process

Teachers are given extensive state-mandated background checks as well as federal screening. Only the best of the best become part of the University Station Academy team.

Front Desk

Our Front Desk is always staffed and management is always available to address any parental concerns.  Additionally, this allows us to know at all times who is in our building so an unauthorized entry is never an issue.

I have been with this school for 10 years! there is NOTHING bad to say about this school. they take VERY good care of the children. There is not much turn around with the staff, a lot of them have been there the whole 10 years that i have been with the school. Heather and Crystal are the directors and are great. my daughter who is now 3 has learned so much there. they put extra effort into doing fun things for the children. i have recommended many friends to the school and they are happy as well. they have cameras in all of the classes that allow you to view from your cell phone. im very happy with this school. no complaints from me, and im a very picky person! especially when it comes to my kids.

best school

My son attended this school for 5 years. Now my daughter goes here. Heather, the director is amazing. The person who wrote the bad review is an idiot. The school didn’t even hv carpet. It was tile so I don’t know what dirty carpet she is talking about. Anyhow. The school has been completely remodeled as of like 4 mon ago. Wood floor througout the whole school now. Also the cameras that u can see ur child online is the best. They even have an app for ur phone so u can see ur child online from ur phone. Love this school and would recommend it to anyone.

This establishment is a great place to send your kids, it is clean, safe and a worry free environment. The staff is great with all the children and interact with everyone of their needs. Also, it has been recently renovated, making it an even better experience for the children. Both my daughter and son attend here. I have to say, I wouldn’t send my kids anywhere else.

I have 2 boys that attend school there. Both of their lead teachers have taught them so much. My 3 yr old is writing and sounding letters, numbers, and his name… while my 2 yr old knows all his shapes, colors, and 5 senses. Both classes daily have circle time, read books, do arts and crafts, and have learning time. I feel very comfortable leaving my kids there over 8 hours a day. When I walk down the halls all the staff is very friendly and always says hello. Since the director, Heather, has been in charge, the school has definitely regained and kept its positive reputation.

STEM Educator Academy July 6 at Texas A&M University

Educators of students in the fourth through eighth grade have a special opportunity this summer to participate in the first STEM Educator Academy on July 6 on the Texas A&M University campus in Bryan-College Station.

Lisa Whittlesey, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service program specialist and international coordinator for the Junior Master Gardener program, is one of the STEM Educator Academy coordinators. (Texas A&M AgriLife photo)

The Junior Master Gardener and Texas 4-H programs of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will present the event.

The academy will begin at 8 a.m. at the The Shirley and Joe Swinbank ’74 AgriLife Center at 556 John Kimbrough in College Station. Attendees will then transition to The Leach Teaching Gardens on the university campus. The program will conclude at about 5 p.m.

“This hands-on, high-energy professional development conference is our first STEM Educator Academy designed specifically for classroom teachers and informal educators for these grade levels,” said Lisa Whittlesey, AgriLife Extension program specialist and international coordinator for the Junior Master Gardener program, Bryan-College Station.

Whittlesey said an integral part of this training will be introducing and incorporating “citizen science” into workshop sessions and the overall program.

Academy STEM workshop tracks

Whittlesey said attendees can choose from workshop options and tracks in both morning and afternoon sessions to build their science, technology, engineering and math, STEM, learning background and obtain specific resources, curricula, classroom materials and supplies for classroom implementation.

The STEM Educator Academy will include Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service experts from various disciplines presenting on science, technology, engineering and mathematics. (Texas A&M AgriLife photo)

“We suggest attendees dress comfortably for the weather and wear closed-toe shoes for the outdoor activities,” she said.

Randy Seagraves, AgriLife Extension program specialist and curriculum coordinator for the  Junior Master Gardener Program, said the workshop will be a full AgriLife Extension effort.

“We have not only JMG and Texas 4-H involved, but we also have AgriLife Extension experts in water, wildlife, horticulture and entomology all taking part to plan and host these sessions,” Seagraves said.

Participants will have fun building in-depth knowledge in a variety of high-interest subject areas and learn how to incorporate these STEM-growing experiences with their students, he said.

This year’s high-interest STEM session options include:

  • Junior Master Gardener Garden Science.
  • The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: Insects in the Garden.
  • Making a Splash with Water Science.
  • Exploring Robotics Science.
  • Wildlife and Fisheries Science Safari.

The workshop also includes a networking lunch and academy wrap-up. The lunch speaker will be Randall Caldwell, principal, Lake Dallas Middle School, who will discuss how he has integrated 4-H enrichment programming and curricula into his campus to enhance student learning.

More information on topics, speakers and the conference is at https://jmgkids.us/agrilifestem/.

Registration information

Space for the STEM academy is limited, and attendees are encouraged to sign up at their earliest convenience. The fee is $185 and registration is available at https://tx.ag.STEM-Academy. The fee includes:

  • Texas A&M AgriLife certification documenting your completed workshop Texas Education Agency-approved eight continuing professional education hours and Texas Environmental Education Advisory Committee credit hours.
  • Lunch, snacks, bottled water.
  • All workshop supplies, curriculum and/or handouts, plus make-and-take samples.
  • Workshop sessions in all areas of The Gardens at Texas A&M, including how those concepts can be incorporated at a school.
  • Chances at door prizes.

The citizen-science connection

Citizen science refers to the participation of nonprofessionals in scientific research. This participation in citizen science research has also enhanced student learning and engagement with science-based inquiry.

The STEM sessions will also focus on how youth and adults can become citizen scientists contributing to ongoing scientific research. (Texas A&M AgriLife photo)

“Each of the STEM sessions will include a citizen science demonstration related to that topic area,” Whittlesey said. “Our team will show how to integrate citizen science into existing lessons. We will also provide resource guides for instructors to online, open-access citizen science tools that will enhance existing lessons with opportunities to contribute to ongoing research.”

Whittlesey said one of the main workshop speakers will be Kelly Albus, Ph.D., an environmental scientist whose almost two decades of work in research, education and outreach through citizen science have helped researchers and communities improve their knowledge of watershed stewardship in Texas.

“Dr. Albus will show how citizen science allows anyone to become a participant rather than an observer in scientific research, which leads to benefits for both science and society,” she said.

Chronicle of University Astronomy – Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics, St.

Petersburg State University

The material for publication was taken from the book of the same name by V.V. Ivanova and T.M. Maksimova, who, having done a colossal amount of work, managed to compile a unique chronicle of university astronomy from 1819years to our day.

This collection combines facts that may be of interest not only to a professional astronomer, but also to all students and staff of St. Petersburg State University. After all, the chronicle of university astronomy is the history of the entire university through the eyes of the astronomical department.

1819

January 8, . In St. Petersburg, the Department of Astronomy was established at the Main Pedagogical Institute.

February 9, . The main pedagogical institute was transformed into St. Petersburg University.

Thus, university astronomy is even slightly older than the University.

1829

The duration of study at the University in the first years of its existence is 3 years.

1837

Since April, students have received the right to wear a sword. From now on, they are required to walk in cocked hats, salute the generals, and meet members of the imperial family in front.

1839

77 students were admitted to the University, but only 39 people graduated from it.

1842

The University does not have its own observatory, but, according to A.N. Savich, “by the favor of the authorities of the Imperial Academy of Sciences, students of the category of mathematical sciences are allowed to visit the Academic Observatory” in the building of the Kunstkamera.

1857

Starting from this year public defenses of dissertations started at the University.

1876

Nov 18 . Master S.P. Glazenap was admitted to lecture on astronomy at the University as a Privatdozent.

1880

There are 879 students in the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the University, which covered all the current natural faculties.

1880

June 24 . A Decree of His Imperial Majesty was issued on the construction of an observatory before St. Petersburg University.

1889

S.P. Glazenup owns an original method for determining the orbits of binary stars, which at one time enjoyed considerable popularity. This year, the Paris Academy of Sciences awarded him a gold medal for this method.

1891-1898

The University is equipped with electric lighting.

1905

Several students under the guidance of Privatdozent A.A. Ivanov predicted the appearance of Halley’s comet in 1911.

1909

Astrophysics course appears for the first time at the University. It was “Physics of the Sky” read by A.A. Ivanov.

1918

August 2, . Lenin signs a decree “On the rules for admission to higher educational institutions”, which abolished all formal restrictions and opened access to universities to everyone, regardless of the availability of documents on secondary education.

1919

The Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the University consists of three departments – mathematics, natural sciences and chemistry. There are 3 departments in the mathematical department: pure mathematics, mechanics, astronomy and geodesy.

1920

Famine in Petrograd. On the initiative of M. Gorky, a commission was created to improve the life of scientists, which organized the provision of scientists with additional rations, shoes, etc.

1924

September 23 . The losses of the Astronomical Observatory from the flood amounted to 4431 rubles.

1930

M.F. comes to work at the University. Subbotin, who later became an outstanding celestial mechanic. In 1933, the Department of Celestial Mechanics was established, which he headed until 1960. Professor M.F. Subbotin was also the first dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics, which separated from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics in the early 1930s.

1932

The oldest astronomer of the University, founder of the Observatory Professor S.P. Glazenap was awarded the title of Hero of Labor.

1934

Mar. From the report of Leningrad State University to the Council of People’s Commissars:

“To improve the nutrition of students, the University organized its own state farm. Its products will begin to be supplied in significant quantities from the autumn of this year, but even now all students with small children receive oil at a reduced price.”

1939

The main premises of JSC Leningrad State University are located in the main building, near the bookstore, where the Observatory has 6-8 rooms. There is also an educational astronomy room – Astrokab, located in the courtyard of the philological faculty, and, of course, the actual observatory in the courtyard of the main building and on the roof of the building on the 10th line, 33.

1939

Theoretical Astrophysics by V. A. Ambartsumyan is the first textbook on this discipline in our country and one of the first in the world.

1941

July . Some of the University’s scientific divisions are evacuated to Yelabuga, where, under the leadership of V.A. Ambartsumyan (at that time vice-rector of Leningrad State University), a branch of the University was created.

Here in 1941-1944 astronomers of the Leningrad State University carried out a number of defense works. Under the leadership of V.V. Sobolev made calculations of the flight of feathered projectiles and bombs, he also solved a number of problems related to the calculation of the visibility of an object (submarine, aircraft) in a turbid environment. In the laboratory of Associate Professor V.V. Sharonov, tables were compiled for calculating the visibility of distant objects and lights.

1941

On the night of September 10, the first bombs fell on the University buildings

1941

September . Lieutenant T.A. Agekyan is in command of a platoon on an anti-aircraft battery in the already blockaded Leningrad. In battle, the levels on his guns were damaged, and it became impossible to direct them. The main peaceful profession of T.A. saves the case. Agekyan. He goes to the well-known Pulkovo observatory – it was already almost at the forefront – and returns from there to his unit with levels from astrometric instruments. The guns could fire again.

1946

The annual University Prize, established by the Council of People’s Commissars of the USSR in 1944, in connection with the 125th anniversary of our University, is awarded for the first time for research in astronomy.

Since then, more than ten astronomers have received university awards.

1952

Student astronomer Heino Potter, champion of the USSR in the 400m, leaves for Helsinki as part of the USSR Olympic team.

1957

February 3 and 4 . An all-Union conference on the physics of planetary nebulae was held in the math-mech room.

1958

Several University astronomers took part in the work of the 11th Congress of the International Astronomical Union (IAU), held in Moscow.

Today more than 20 astronomers of the University are members of the IAU.

1960

The construction of the Byurakan station began with funds allocated to our University in accordance with Order No. 342 of the Ministry of Higher Education of the RSFSR.

1964

Graduated with honors in 1955 from the Astronomical Department of our faculty B.N. Strugatsky was admitted to the Union of Writers of the USSR.

1970

October . The observatory receives the rights of a research institution of the first degree. As a result, in particular, salaries of employees are significantly increased.

1973

The 15th IAU Congress approved names on the surface of Mars discovered from space stations. One of the large craters is named Sharonov – after the professor of the University, the famous explorer of the planets V.V. Sharonova. There is also a Sharonov crater on the far side of the moon.

1974

Professor V.A. Dombrovsky (posthumously) and his students V.A. Hagen-Thorn and O.S. Shulov for a series of works on the polarimetric study of stars, nebulae and galaxies receive the Bredikhin Prize – the highest astronomical award awarded by the USSR Academy of Sciences.

1978

The observatory, together with all the hardware, moves from Vasilievsky Island to Petrodvorets.

1979

The university prize was awarded to research by V.A. Antonov on the stability of stellar systems. They have received wide international recognition, entered the textbooks.

Unbelievable but true: V.A. Antonov is not an astronomer by education, but a biologist. Soon after graduating from the Faculty of Biology of the Perm University, he entered graduate school at Leningrad State University under Professor K. F. Ogorodnikov with a degree in stellar dynamics.

1984

In October, the University hosted an all-Union astrophysical seminar dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Department of Astrophysics.

1985

Head of the Department of Astrophysics Academician V.V. Sobolev was awarded the title of Hero of Socialist Labor.

1987

The head council for astronomy of the RSFSR Ministry of Higher Education is now based at our University. Professor K.V. Kholshevnikov.

1988

For the first time in many years, astronomy students did not go to summer practice at the Byurakan station in Armenia – there is a war in Karabakh.

1991

A.A. Boyarchuk, who graduated from the University in 1953, was elected president of the IAU. Earlier, in 1961 – 1964, this high post was held by another graduate of the astronomical department of Leningrad State University – V. A. Hambardzumyan (Issue 1928g.). Our University is the only one that has given the world two presidents of the IAU.

1992

On the basis of the Astronomical Observatory at St. Petersburg University, the Astronomical Research Institute (NIAI) was established

1992

E-mail appeared in NIAI. The Institute had to pay a lot of money for both sent and received information. Therefore, it is recommended to send only short letters, and unauthorized sending of a long message from abroad causes “mumbling” every time.

1993

Byurakan station is mothballed.

1995

In May, access to the Internet through its own WEB server appeared, which significantly influenced the nature and technology of research work.

1997

Head of the Department of Celestial Mechanics KV Kholshevnikov becomes a Soros professor.

1999

Jan 25 . The Academic Council of the University decides to award the Astronomical Institute named after V.V. Sobolev.

1999

February – June . The celebration of the 275th anniversary of the University, which, as university historians prove, was founded not in 1819, as it was believed until recently, but much earlier, under Peter I, in 1724.

2000

Continues, having adopted recently the nature of the present exodus, the outflow of young astronomers to the west.

2000

By decision of the IAU, three more minor planets are named after professors of St. Petersburg University.

2004

The film Stargazers dedicated to the work of our Astronomical Institute is shown on regional television.

2004

A precision GPS/GLONASS receiver Javad Lexon GGD was purchased under a grant from the Ministry of Education. On the basis of this receiver, a geodynamic station is being created in Peterhof, which is included in the worldwide network.

This chronicle ends at the beginning of the 2000s. Now we are witnessing the writing of the history of St. Petersburg State University in general and the astronomical department of the Faculty of Mathematics in particular. Perhaps, after a while, your names will appear on the pages of the annals. To be continued.

Rybachy biological station

General

Last updated:
January 28, 2021

Biological station “Rybachy” is a branch of the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg. The structure of the station includes 10 scientists – biologists and 12
administrative and technical staff. In addition, students and graduate students of various universities conduct research and carry out qualifying work at the station.

The station is located in a two-story building in the village. Fishing. The station has a base for experimental work and an aviary for keeping experimental birds. Bird Data Bank
contains information on the age and sex structure, morphological parameters, molting of more than 3 million individuals belonging to 200 bird species. The data bank is replenished annually 30–40
thousands of records.

Since 1957, the Fringilla field station has been operating 11 kilometers southwest of Rybachy. Currently, birds are caught in two large Rybachin traps for catching
migratory birds. Trapping is carried out continuously from April 1 to November 1. The hospital is serviced by employees of the Biological Station and volunteers.

The Curonian Spit – a narrow strip of land, 97 km long and 400 m to 3. 6 km wide – separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. Since the end of the 19th century, the Spit has been known as a place
huge concentration of migratory birds. The chain of sand dunes, reaching a height of 68 m, stretches from the northeast to the southwest, which corresponds to the main direction of bird migration in
this part of Europe. Every year, during the migration period, more than 10 million birds of various species, which avoid flying over open water during the daytime, use the Curonian Spit
like a land bridge. On some autumn days, the number of birds flying over the spit can reach 500,000.

The significance of the Curonian Spit for the study of bird migrations was discovered at the end of the 19th century, when the famous German ornithologist Johannes Thienemann visited it for the first time. In 1901 he founded in the village
Rossitten (now Rybachy) the world’s first ornithological station for studying bird migrations (Vogelwarte Rossitten). Thienemann directed the work of the station until 1929, after which it was headed by Ernst Schutz.

Rossitten Station was the first organization in the world to begin mass ringing of birds. Already at 1931 E. Schutz and O. Weigold published the world’s first atlas of bird migrations. World War II interrupted ornithological research on the Curonian Spit. They resumed only in 1956, when Professor Lev Osipovich Belopolsky founded the Biological Station of the Zoological Institute in Rybachy. The station was created by the decision of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences in order to study bird migrations and continue the scientific tradition begun by the works of German scientists.

L.O. Belopolsky, who was an enthusiast of mass trapping and ringing of birds, the station employee Janis Yakshis built in 1957 the first big Rybachin trap. She is
It is based on the same principle as the Heligoland trap, but differs from it in a non-rigid frame and huge dimensions (the width of the inlet is up to 30 m, the height is up to 15 m). Bolshaya Rybachinskaya
the trap resembles a huge fishing trawl fixed on the ground and open to migratory birds. Due to their huge size, the birds do not perceive the trap as a source of danger. They fly into
trap and in most cases independently reach the receiving chambers, from where they can be taken by hand. One standard Fishing trap can catch up to several thousand birds a day.
From 1957, more than 3 million birds have already been caught. Every year, using this method, an average of 30-40 thousand birds are caught and ringed.

Most often, various passerine birds are caught, in particular, chaffinch, siskin, yellow-headed kinglet, willow warbler, great tit, starling and others. Among non-passerine birds, more often than others
sparrow hawk, long-eared owl, great spotted woodpecker and cuckoo come across. Every year, the traps operate around the clock from April 1 to November 1. This makes it possible to carry out a unique
monitoring of biodiversity, abundance, timing of bird migration, as well as the sex and age structure and condition of various bird species nesting in northern and northeastern Europe.

Not only birds of passage, but also individuals nesting on the spit fall into the traps. Many of them are repeatedly caught during a season or even a number of consecutive years, which makes
possible regular monitoring of local populations. To date, the data bank of the Biostation contains information about 9,000 distant finds of birds ringed by us and 30,000 repeated captures.
at the place of ringing. Mass trapping of birds in large traps, their lifetime processing and banding is still one of the activities of the Rybachy Biological Station.
The main goal is to study various aspects of the annual cycle of birds, especially migration.

On the basis of the Rybachy Biological Station, work is being carried out under RSF grant No. 17-14-01147 (2017-2019) “Sensory systems for near and far navigation in birds” .

Grant summary . Experimental work indicates that at least some bird species are capable of high-precision navigation while crossing long distances. At the same time, the question of what “coordinates”, i.e. navigational natural factors that aid in position determination are used by birds for navigation. The “map and compass” conceptual approach widely accepted in the literature (Kramer 1953) assumes a two-stage solution to any navigation problem: first, the animal determines its position relative to the target (the “map” stage), and then follows the compass direction leading to the target (the “compass” stage). “). Natural sources of information for these stages may be different. Research over the past 60 years has revealed compass mechanisms: birds use stellar, solar, and magnetic landmarks to select and maintain direction (Wiltschko & Wiltschko 2015; Chernetsov 2016). However, the sensory nature of the “map” (positioning system) remains the least explored issue. This project aims to reveal the nature of the map and the details of navigational sensory mechanisms in birds. In our project, we rely on the most modern experimental work, including our own scientific achievements in this area. In modern literature, two hypotheses coexist – magnetic and olfactory (smell) – explaining the sensory nature of bird navigation. However, they are not mutually exclusive. Moreover, some researchers suggest that positioning at different geographical scales and/or in species of different ecological groups can be carried out using different sensory systems. This project is aimed at a comprehensive study of the role of both olfaction and magnetoreception for navigation in birds. At the same time, we plan to experimentally test the two mentioned hypotheses on different geographical scales (from units to thousands of kilometers), and also try to identify the interaction of these two sensory systems.

The leader of the rating is lieutenant colonel of the reserve

Last year, professor of the Military Training Center of the IVO SibFU, Ph. D. course “Radar systems”).

Rating, as you know, consists of several points, but the main thing is the achievements of scientific activity: the number of articles published in journals with an impact factor, VAK journals; participation in research work, in experimental design, work in dissertation councils, preparation of graduate students for the defense of dissertations.

“I didn’t set out to score points,” says Professor V.N. Tyapkin. – It’s just that in 2012 the final stage of preparing my doctoral dissertation for defense came. I had to work hard both in terms of publishing scientific articles and in terms of participating in contract development projects.

For more than a dozen years I have been dealing with the problem of protecting radio navigation systems from deliberate interference. The topic “surfaced” when I was still serving in the army, and then studied in Kharkov, at the Military Engineering Radio Engineering Academy named after. Marshal Govorov (both the Krasnoyarsk Higher Command School of Air Defense Radio Electronics and the Military Engineering Academy V. N. Tyapkin graduated with honors – author’s note). The director of the Institute of Military Training Yevgeny Nikolaevich GARIN and Vladimir Ivanovich KOKORIN, who, unfortunately, died early, suggested that I go to SibFU and engage in research activities. He needed like-minded people, and since then I have been working in a group now led by Yury Petrovich SALOMATOV, Candidate of Technical Sciences.

— In which magazines did your publications appear last year?

— Four articles were posted by Bulletin of the Siberian State Aerospace University. Academician M.F. RESHETNEVA, then an article was published in the journal “Advances in modern radio electronics” (publishing house “Radiotekhnika”, Moscow). I initiated the release of a special issue of this journal, dedicated to the Krasnoyarsk Radio Engineering School (the next, 6th issue, which will be released in June 2013, will be dedicated to “ISS” named after academician M.F. Reshetnev “).
In 2012, I managed to publish 9 articles in VAK journals. Other publications were published in the Bulletin of the Academy of Aerospace Defense named after Marshal ZHUKOV.

In addition, in 2011-2012 four textbooks were published with my participation – with the stamp of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation for military specialties “Fundamentals of building radar stations of the air force of radio engineering troops”, “Radar systems”, “Radar station P-18” and “Radioautomatics”. Now I am preparing two more textbooks for publication.

— They say getting a textbook stamp is a very lengthy and difficult procedure…

— It’s true: first, the curriculum is sent to Moscow, where it is reviewed, and shortcomings are eliminated. It only takes a year to complete.

— Valery Nikolaevich, which of the life stages seems to you the most interesting?

— First of all, study. My teachers were world-famous scientists: Yakov Davydovich SHIRMAN, who is called the father of Russian radar; Laureates of the State Prize Colonel Yuri Nikolayevich SEDYSHEV, Major General Viktor Vasilievich FEDININ, who made a huge contribution to the development of radar.

After graduating from the academy, I was going to enter postgraduate studies, but my plans were interrupted by the collapse of the Soviet Union. To stay at the academy, one had to take the Ukrainian military oath. On moral grounds, I couldn’t do it. Therefore, I and my other compatriots returned to Russia. He worked as a teacher at the Krasnoyarsk School of Radio Electronics, witnessed its closure. It is sincerely a pity – our graduates were gladly taken into the army.

I also remember my service on Novaya Zemlya. There, for four years, I commanded a subdivision of a separate company. All food and cargo was delivered there in the summer by water. In winter it was very difficult. Helicopter flew once a month. There are very strong winds on Novaya Zemlya – the speed reaches 50 m / s.

In the 1980s, American reconnaissance aircraft flew constantly near the Soviet border: SR-71, RC-135. I had to stay at the position where the equipment stood for days, monitor the airspace.

30 km from us there was a test site, where 135 nuclear explosions were carried out over 35 years of its existence, including the most powerful thermonuclear explosion in history, the seismic waves of which circled the Earth three times, and the sound wave reached Dikson after 800 km . The tundra in those places suffered a lot (it does not allow cruel treatment …). Ironically, later, when the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant occurred at 1986, I was again in the service in an area close to the site of the explosion.

All the time I had to work in radio engineering battalions, which provided flights for fighter aircraft – it was a very stressful time. In summer, flights began at 6 am and continued until 2 am.

– If we compare the air defense system, say, 25 years ago and now?

– Engineering science has taken a big step forward. I think we need to strengthen our air defense, equip units with compact digital stations with higher combat capabilities. Unfortunately, in many places the old but solid park is still working. And new technology will require new approaches, a new personnel policy. It is necessary to restore the system of military education.

For example, I am very sorry that the fate of the N.Ye. ZHUKOVSKY (transferred from Moscow to Voronezh). It was created in 1918, when impoverished Soviet Russia believed that there could be no future without aviation. World-famous scientists worked here. And after the transfer from the capital, the teaching staff broke up, the traditions were irretrievably lost. It takes decades for Voronezh to reach the level of the Moscow Academy. And this is a typical process: there is not a single radio engineering school left in the country.

In fact, only the SFU University Training Center now trains radio engineering specialists for the Air Force.

– You are involved in many research and development activities, including those related to satellite navigation. How often do you have to travel on business trips?

– Usually once a month.
