How much does the video game industry pay – on Twitter, developers from the US and Canada reveal salary data

Last week, the hashtag #GameDevPaidMe began to gain popularity again on Twitter . Below it, game professionals from all over the world share their salaries. We have selected the most interesting of the tweets.

Image by Annelise Capossela of Axios

As a reminder, the first tweets marked #GameDevPaidMe appeared in June 2020. However, even after a year and a half, the hashtag has not lost its relevance. From time to time, waves of thematic posts begin on Twitter, in which developers talk about how much they received in different positions and in different companies. Their goal is to expose inequality and achieve a fair salary for all professionals from the gaming industry.

A new wave of tweets with this hashtag started late last week. It’s hard to say who started it all. But most likely, the first (or one of the first) about #GameDevPaidMe remembered Michael Effenberger (Michael Effenberger), game designer at Bungie .

Pay is now $90k after market evaluation. Please continue to support your colleagues by promoting transparency and championing pay equity https://t.co/Qe5kQflLox

Salaries revealed this time around include Bungie, Obsidian Entertainment, Activision Blizzard, Unity, Zynga, Riot Games, Jagex, Jam City, Ubisoft, Moon Studios, Epic Games, Niantic and many other companies. In particular, Josh Sawyer (Josh Sawyer), director of design at Obsidian Entertainment, announced his income.

— Josh Sawyer (@jesawyer) December 6, 2021

Predictably, the highest salaries are in the US and Canada (but keep in mind that Americans usually report pre-tax wages).

For example, an employee of Riot Games, who is a middle-level producer, noted that her annual salary alone is $120.2 thousand. In addition, she receives about $30,000 in bonuses. Riot Games also pays health insurance for employees and sets up a so-called 401 (k) account – a savings retirement account.

— Bun (@RiotTinyBun) December 6, 2021

By comparison, the lead producer from a Mexican studio (she didn’t name the studio, but it’s known to work there at 51-250 people) listed her annual salary at $29..4 thousand.

It also turned out again that, on average, programmers earn the most. Judging by the latest tweets, the salary of many of them is kept at the level of $100-140 thousand per year, and some of them exceed $250 thousand. According to Josh Soyer, who wrote a small thread about this last summer, this situation is not surprising. Part of the reason is that programmers can always go to non-gaming companies, where they will earn even more.

Partial confirmation of his words Chris Pollock (Chris Pollock) working in Demonware on services for Call of Duty . As Pollock noted, now his salary is $ 155 thousand a year (+ 15% bonus), but in a traditional tech company he could receive much more.

Promote pay transparency!

I make $155k + ~15% bonus as a Senior Software Engineer at Demonware on api/services for Call of Duty.

I’d be making *far* more in an equivalent role in a traditional tech company, but I just really like games.

Testers get paid much less. For example, the lead tester from Obsidian Entertainment indicated an annual salary of $65 thousand, the tester from the French Ubisoft – €24 thousand ($27.1 thousand), the tester of the British Climax Studios – £18.5 thousand ($24.5 thousand), and the tester out of Playground Games – $20 thousand. However, there are employees whose salaries are quite comparable to the salaries of developers. For example, Michelle Hyde (Michelle Hyde), working in Xbox , earns $ 105 thousand per year.

As for artists, their annual salaries fluctuate on average in the region of $20-60 thousand. The amount of payments depends on the level, specialization and country. For example, the salary of Noah Bench (Noah Bench), a senior technical artist at Niantic, is $143,000. Whereas the art director of the Australian Epiphany Games earns about $43.4 thousand a year (including bonuses).

I make $143k as a Senior Technical Artist at Niantic. Bonus starts at 18.5%. I made $105k when I left EA as a Technical Artist II in 2016. I started at $46k as an Assoc. 3D Artist at EA in 2012. #gamedevpaidme

The gender of the employee affects salaries in some companies. As Beth Beinke, director of level design at Zynga, noted, there are a lot of men in the gaming industry who make $200,000-300,000 a year. At the same time, such a salary is rare for women.

#GameDevPaidMe is making me realize I’ve been VASTLY underpaid my entire career.

Also: I’m shocked at how many men in the industry are being paid $200-300k😱 when I don’t think I personally know any woman getting paid close😔

THIS is why it’s critical for men to share salaries.

A San Francisco Twitter employee barely makes enough $160,000 a year / Habr

Most people in the IT industry make good money. This cannot be said about absolutely all “techies”, but in most cases it is. Large and not very large companies are ready to pay thousands of dollars a month for a good professional – a programmer, electronics engineer, information security specialist. American companies pay their employees well, for example, those located in Silicon Valley or other regions with the highest concentration of startups per square meter.

But the employees are still not too happy. The fact is that such places are characterized by high prices for everything: housing, food, education. And a person with a salary that can be considered very good by the standards of any country in the same Silicon Valley, in San Francisco, does not feel very well off. For example, one of the Twitter programmers says that it is difficult for him to live on $160,000 a year. There is not enough money for anything.

This programmer says that housing “eats” the most funds. For a small two-bedroom house in San Francisco, he pays about $3,000 a month. And it’s not that much, because in some cases people pay $2,000 for a private room in a small apartment. Families, he says, have a harder time than people who are not burdened by marriage and children. Families have to pay for child insurance, which is extremely expensive in Silicon Valley. But rent takes the most money.

San Francisco has some of the highest real estate and rental prices in the world. This happened because of the rapid development of Silicon Valley, with the increase in salaries of employees of local companies. There is a lot of real estate here, but not enough to satisfy the needs of all visitors. Therefore, landlords raise housing prices almost every month. And if earlier people with not very high income complained about high prices, now even those who receive high salaries start having problems.

The Twitter programmer mentioned above even had to borrow money in 2014. This happened after the company changed the payment scheme, and wages arrived on the card later than usual. He does not disclose his name, because he is afraid that the voiced data violates the non-disclosure agreement for corporate information, signed at the very beginning of employment.

The concerns similar to those voiced by the Twitter employee apply to representatives of other companies in full. For example, complaints about high rents with a request to compensate for part of the cost of renting apartments and houses regularly receive Facebook management from its own employees. Last year, the company’s programmers even held a special meeting with Mark Zuckerberg dedicated to this topic.

The fact is that rent takes from 40% to 50% of the income of the region’s residents, which many consider too much. Regularly it becomes known about various curious cases related to the lack of desire among the “come in large numbers” to spend a significant part of the salary on renting a house. For example, one of the Apple employees lives in a garage. Another IT person says he lives with 12 other programmers in a two-bedroom apartment. They found this place through Airbnb. “It works out to about $1,100 for a bunk bed and five people who live in the same room. One guy moved into a storage room, paying $1,400 for a ‘private room’.”

Another woman who works in the telecommunications industry complains that she and her boyfriend make about $1 million a year, but still can’t afford a house. She says that Silicon Valley is not where the American dream operates. Now the woman is afraid that the insurance program introduced by Barack Obama will be canceled, and she herself will lose her job.

Buying a property here is not easy even for a person who has money. So, an employee of another technology company from Silicon Valley last year tried to find a home. He earns about $700,000 a year. Once he was lucky, he came across an advertisement for the sale of a house for $ 1. 4 million. But this person did not have time to do anything – the house was sold in just a day for a price of $ 1.7 million. He has enough to live on, but this life cannot be called luxurious or too too comfortable. By the way, high prices are not only for real estate. For example, the cost of a coffee with a bun is $8, and the price of a glass of fresh juice is $12. Now the person in question above is about to leave Silicon Valley, despite the loss of high wages.

Companies operating in the region have to pay huge salaries to their employees to keep them afloat. A Canadian engineer who came to the region at the invitation of an employer immediately began to receive $200,000. This amount seemed absurd to him, he did not understand why they were going to pay him so much. But after arriving in San Francisco, he understood everything. The cost of rent, child insurance and other things in the region is very high. Now the engineer plans to leave here.

In general, not many people in Silicon Valley are happy and satisfied with the current state of affairs.
