Tutors assess the situation – Kommersant FM – Kommersant

Tutors will sharply raise prices for their services in the near future. At least, more than half of them plan to do so. Judging by a survey by Maximum Education, a significant proportion believe that the cost of classes will increase by 10-20%. Approximately every tenth specialist plans to increase prices by a third. At the same time, there are those among them who are ready to help schoolchildren for free. Details – at Daniil Babkin.

Tutors usually raise their prices in summer and autumn, when many new students come. But the events of 2022 seem to have left teachers with no way out — only official inflation has long since exceeded double digits. And now, just two months before the exam, about 60% of teachers plan to change the rates. Some, like Andrey, an English teacher, have already increased the cost of their services.

True, he has concerns: “Most of my students are schoolchildren and children who live in the regions. I am not sure about their ability to pay, although sometimes there are cases when parents pay even more than they need. Given the situation with the ruble, I would like to raise prices by at least 30%. Now I take the minimum payment even for the regions. I’m not planning on increasing it.

In the future, I would like to recruit students from Moscow and the Moscow region, because they are more solvent.”

In addition to clients from the regions who have financial difficulties, there is another category of “problem” students. These are students from abroad, notes Dmitry Levchik, Doctor of Historical Sciences, teacher, who also raised prices by 15-20%: “Due to the change in the payment method, it has become more difficult to find students in the West. For example, a family lives abroad, but does not want their child to lose touch with their homeland and study its history.

Previously, all calculations were very simple. Now I need to look for clients who have relatives in Moscow or somewhere in Russia so that they transfer money to me – this greatly complicated the situation.

However, there are some tutors who are not going to overestimate the value of their work. Many explained this by the fact that they would look for new sources of income, and 18% of the respondents even stated that they teach not for the sake of money, but “for the soul”.

For example, Russian language and literature tutor Marina Rukavishnikova. She is not going to change prices and is even ready to help students for free: “Despite the situation, there is no need to raise the cost of services. Of course I won’t. I can imagine how hard it can be for parents now, because many people lose their jobs, new problems arise.

Several of my children could no longer pay for classes, their parents put them before the fact.

For such students, I created a free Telegram channel to keep them in good shape until the exam itself. It seems to me that now, on the contrary, it is important to show mutual assistance and support.”

However, not all tutors have altruistic moods. The linguistic platform ProgressMe told Kommersant FM that the prices for their teachers could increase by 50% and even 100% in a year.

I work as a chemistry teacher at a school and at the same time do tutoring.

Inessa Konstantinova

combines teaching and tutoring

Author profile

I have dreamed of becoming a teacher since I was a child, before I was in school. At first I thought about the Russian language or mathematics, but in the 8th grade chemistry began: the teacher who taught this subject instilled in me a love for it. Then I finally decided on the specialty.

I liked that I could be useful and instill in children a love of knowledge. The teacher reveals an amazing world to the students and helps them find their calling. But until I entered the university, my parents and relatives dissuaded me from the work of a teacher, because the salaries of teachers always left much to be desired.

I grew up in a poor family, so my mother believed that you need to get a good education in school in order to enter an institute and acquire a specialty that guarantees a decent salary. Mathematics was relatively easy for me, so my parents expected me to connect my life with numbers. Mom always said: “Go to the lawyers, accountants or economists.”

Studying at a pedagogical university and the first tutoring experience

After graduating from school in 2005, I purposefully went to a pedagogical university to major in biology and chemistry teacher. I graduated from school with a silver medal, so when I entered, I had the privilege: if I had passed the first entrance exam in biology with 5, I would have been exempted from the second. Unfortunately, I passed it with a 4, but I showed myself well in the chemistry exam and, as a result, ended up on the list of applicants for the budget department. If I had not entered, I would have had to return to my hometown and study at a financial college.

In my last years of study, I had an internship at school. I was not only a passive listener in the classes of experienced teachers, but also taught the lessons myself. At the end of the practice in the 4th year, a student of the 10th grade approached me and asked me to pull her up in biology. She entered the Faculty of Psychology. We exchanged contacts and started studying in the fall: I was in the 5th year, and she was in the 11th grade.

I hardly prepared for classes: by that time I was so fed up with the material that I could talk for hours on any topic that was asked of me. First, the student and I analyzed one version of the exam, discussed an approximate plan for preparing and the requirements for the knowledge of a graduate, and also decided on what exactly we would study. We have analyzed each topic in great detail. I brought additional tests to the student – not only those that were sold in bookstores.

I didn’t have any worries, because I already taught at school during practice. Moreover, I spoke at conferences a lot and was not afraid of the public, then why be afraid of one student?

As a result, the girl entered the Faculty of Psychology on a budget. But this is not only my merit: she worked hard and fulfilled all my requirements. I don’t remember how many points my student scored, but definitely more than 80. By the way, when she was in her 3rd year, she found me on social networks and asked me to help with the term paper. She had several general questions. Since then, we have not contacted anymore.

11 years have passed since the first tutoring experience. As such, my approach to classes has not changed, but the structure of the exam has changed, so I had to adapt my lessons to new requirements. Classes have become more interactive: now we watch presentations on biology more often, analyze graphs and tables, and use electronic and digital educational resources. We devote one lesson per month to solving problems and analyzing errors.

/filolog-repetitor/

How a philologist became a tutor

But one thing remained unchanged – the algorithm for conducting the lesson:

  1. Checking homework and survey.
  2. Analysis of a new topic.
  3. Presentation and drawing.
  4. Joint test solution on a new topic.
  5. Homework.

Thoughts about graduate school and starting work at school

After graduating from a pedagogical university, I got a part-time job as a chemistry teacher at school, as I planned to enter graduate school at the department of physiology. At 21, I still wanted to do science. My diploma was devoted to the physiology of the heart: my classmates and I studied the effect of various drugs on the heartbeat. They even raised laboratory rats for this.

But it didn’t work out with graduate school. Funding for the program was cut, and instead of six state-funded places, only two were left, where they took “their own”. I would not have pulled a paid postgraduate study, because at that moment my parents could not help with money. There was only one way left – to work as a teacher at school.

Of course, one could do science, but in our country it is not so well developed. Then I need to marry a very wealthy man so that he can support his family, and I can devote myself to the cause without harming our wallet. I’m talking about real science, not the defense of a dissertation that no one needs.

/khimik/

“I write applications for grants almost every month”: how much does a chemical scientist earn

I was lucky with the staff of the school I got into. That year, four young specialists came – this is the name of those who work in their specialty immediately after graduation.

Then I did not consider tutoring as a permanent additional income. I took one student and spent a whole year preparing him for entering the university, conducting one lesson a week. It was 400 R for a lesson lasting 1.5 hours. My first salary was 9500 R, 3000 R of which went to pay for a rented room. If I went to graduate school, I would live in an institute hostel, spending 500 R per month on housing.

After working at the school in September and October, I went to my supervisor to take extra hours and thereby increase my salary. It turned out that all the hours were distributed, so I had to look for a part-time job. I got a job as a part-time teacher at another school in my area, which was conveniently accessible by bus. They needed a teacher there for 12 hours – that’s two days of 6 lessons. I asked to release me two days a week at the main school so that I could work in another educational institution, and they met me halfway.

I worked part-time for the second quarter of the school year, which brought in an additional 4500 R. At the end of December, a biology teacher suddenly quit the main school, and all his hours were distributed between me and another teacher. As a result, I left my job as a part-time job and since January I have already received 36 hours and took a class teacher.

My salary immediately increased to 24,000 RUR.

Of course, everyone understands that many hours is a big salary. But at the same time, there was a big load, and I was exhausted very much. I came home closer to seven in the evening, and I also had to prepare for the lessons. The school year ended at such a crazy pace.

From school to student: work without days off

One day in August, we were sitting with colleagues over a cup of tea and were angry at the state, which treats two very important professions like doctors and teachers. A colleague suggested that one student a month brings in more money than an extra two hours at school. Then I also decided to try to focus on tutoring.

Word of mouth and the already existing portal “Your tutor” helped me find students. I set a price based on the average cost of a tutor’s services in Kazan: I asked my colleagues and looked at profiles of other specialists on the website. I received 500 R for an hour and a half session. At first, I took on any students, even if they lived far from me, but, having gained experience, I began to select candidates closer to work or home. After I got a car, I began to pay attention to the availability of parking and the convenience of access to the house.

Two students came to see me a week, I went to one more student myself. All other evenings were busy preparing for lessons and personal time. Refusal of additional hours at school affected vacation pay, because of this, monthly wages decreased. So I decided to save 10% of my tutoring income for vacation pay.

Meet a tutor who earns up to 700 thousand per month

In 2012, I took tutoring seriously. For three years of work at the school, I gained enough experience, it became easier to prepare for the lessons, so I calmly recruited students. Sometimes I had two classes per evening.

Preparing for lessons and tutoring takes 10 hours a week. To convey the material, I prepare presentations, print color and black-and-white drawings, give links to educational videos that you need to watch. What I use in the lesson, I can take to the lesson with the student. I prepare most of the material for school in the summer on vacation: I edit the work plan for the year, finalize presentations, sort tests, arrange them in the right order. This makes it easier to prepare for classes during class time.

One colleague said that every few years she raises the hourly rate. In 2012, the cost of one hour of a lesson with me was 400 R, that is, for an hour and a half lesson, I was already paid 600 R.

From the next year, I began to save money for a mortgage. The salary came to the card, from which I did not spend anything, I paid everywhere in cash from tutoring. Back then, cards were not yet so common, so I always had cash with me. Sometimes there was a lot of money on hand, then I replenished the card and transferred it to the deposit.

In 2014, the desire to buy an apartment became even stronger, so the number of classes also increased. I scheduled lessons not only on school days, but also on weekends. I had about six to eight lessons lasting 1.5 hours on weekdays, two on Saturday and up to four on Sunday. In addition, on weekdays there were two or three hour classes. If no one canceled the lesson on Sunday, then in one full day I earned 2400 rubles.

/amass-apartment/

0003

Total: workload at school – 36 hours, workload of a tutor – up to 23 hours.

The main thing with this mode of operation is enough sleep, because sleep is an effective remedy for emotional fatigue. If you came home after physical work, then you can lie down – and the tension in the muscles will pass. But if you are emotionally tired, it will be more difficult to rest. I found several ways for myself: sleep, contrast shower, music, meditation, my favorite hobby (I have cooking) and cleaning, no matter how strange it may sound. Rubbing dishes, scrubbing the sink, and mopping the floors are very helpful in getting the heavy thoughts out of your head.

It was hard work, but I was glad to think that all the money I earned went to the down payment on the mortgage. Moreover, one plus was still visible – I did not have time to spend this money. As a result, in the same year, I bought a one-room apartment on a mortgage.

Who is usually looking for a tutor in chemistry and biology

Most often, a tutor in biology and chemistry is sought by those who enter a medical school and applicants for chemical departments. In second place – students 9class who chose the OGE in these subjects. There are also those who just need to improve their knowledge and improve the result.

Not all students are sufficiently motivated. But I remember the guys who came to me with a triple in chemistry, and as a result passed the exam for five in the 9th grade or got a high score on the Unified State Examination in 11. These are diligent and hardworking children who just needed outside help: they could not handle some topics on your own.

Of course, there are also outright lazy people. The parents of such students believe that the tutor is a magician who puts information into the head of the ward, and oops! – the child is doing well in the exam. But that doesn’t happen. To master new knowledge and to navigate the educational material well, you need to work hard. Lots of. The generation that grows up on “OK, Google. Tell me what a neutralization reaction is”, sometimes he does not know how to use normal sources of information – books and manuals.

If I see that the material is difficult for the child, I can offer a five-minute break during which we talk about life, laugh and joke. In the spring, I sometimes conduct biology classes outdoors. We arrange a meeting with the student in the park, walk, remember the structure of biological objects, talk and repeat the material.

/list/veni-vidi-vici/

Go to university without exams: 8 Olympiads that guarantee a budget place the student had no interest in the subject. This often happens when parents want to make a doctor out of a child, but it turns out that he hates biology or chemistry. Sometimes I even had to finish classes ahead of schedule, because parents or children changed their minds about entering a particular faculty.

If a child stops doing tasks and looks for various excuses why it is not ready, I turn to my teaching skills and only then to my parents. If the conversations lead nowhere, I refuse to study. Parents expect a high result, but with such an attitude it will not happen. Of course, they will blame the tutor for not preparing the child well.

For all 11 years, I have given up only three students, one of the mothers even wrote a not-so-nice review on the Your Tutor website. But there were also good moments. For example, we became so good friends with the family of one girl that they even invited me to dinner and family holidays.

What difficulties does the tutor face

You cannot teach children from the school where you work This falls under the category of “conflict of interest”, which is detailed in Law No. 273-FZ “On Education in the Russian Federation”. In short, this is a situation in which a teacher may have a personal interest in receiving some benefit in the performance of his duties, which may affect the quality of his work.

If the student does not go to the tutor himself, then he has to spend a lot of time on the road. Let’s say you are conducting a 90-minute lesson for 900 RUR. It takes about 30 minutes to get to the student and the same amount back. It turns out that 900 R is the price for 2 hours 30 minutes, part of which goes to the road.

Preparing for a class also takes time. That’s one more hour. Yes, if the tutor took only the USE in chemistry in grade 11, then the preparation for one lesson is divided among all students. But you need to understand that children are different, and a work plan that suits one child may not suit another. In addition, the preparation and alignment of the lesson change depending on the update of the control and measuring materials.

If there are several classes in one day, you need to carefully calculate everything in order to be in time everywhere. Even if a tutor came at 4:25 pm and started class at exactly 4:30 pm, this does not mean that at 6:00 pm he says “goodbye” and leaves. You need to bring the lesson to its logical conclusion and complete your thought. Therefore, it turns out that it is necessary to schedule the next lesson taking into account a five-minute delay. And it also takes time to get to the car and get to another address, taking into account traffic jams.

There is not always a place for parking, so sometimes you have to spin around the area or even put the car in a paid parking lot. If there is nowhere to put the car, I can refuse classes, as my transport can simply be evacuated.

/diary-repetitor-msk/

How does a math tutor live in New Moscow with an income of 30,000 R per month

In winter, engine warm-up and, during snowfall, car cleaning are added. If one student’s class ends at 18:00, then the second one can only get to 18:30, even if he lives five minutes away. And you need to call the intercom at least five minutes before class, because then you still have to wait for the elevator and go up to the desired floor.

There is not always enough time for personal needs. Man is a living being, physiological processes take place in him for almost 24 hours. If there are several classes in the evening, then the breaks between them can be quite short. So, if I need to visit the sanitary room, then I go to the shopping center, McDonald’s, CFS or something like that. It is somehow inconvenient to go to the restroom in the student’s apartment. Sometimes during classes, the throat is very dry. In this case, I take a thermos with tea or water with me.

Some apartments do not have facilities for classes. Narrow table, stool for tutor. And for work you need an ordinary chair with a back – try to sit on a stool for exactly 1. 5 hours.

Students’ pets can become a source of allergies. It is better to clarify in advance which animals are in the apartment. I don’t have allergies, but there are reactions to some breeds of cats. In such cases, I simply do not touch them.

Smells in the entrance and apartment can distract from work. I had one very intelligent family that had three well-behaved children. They had an extractor hood in their kitchen, but the smell of lamb was constantly felt in the apartment, to which I reacted sharply. After two months of work, I still had to give up classes. I recommended another tutor to my family.

The student can cancel the lesson. It’s one thing to be warned about this in advance, and quite another when it’s 30 minutes before the start.

Career prospects in education

There can be both vertical and horizontal growth in the teaching profession. In the first case, you can become the head of a methodological association, deputy director or school director. If you managed to get the position of deputy, you can also try yourself as a methodologist or specialist in a department, department, or even the ministry of education. Horizontal growth is getting categories. Now there are no other divisions in the education system.

You can just be a first-class teacher and grow professionally so that all children learn the material well and pass their final exams successfully. Unfortunately, they don’t pay extra for this. A teacher’s salary grows only with experience. But this cannot be called an increase in pay. I am so ashamed that I don’t even want to say how much teachers are paid for teaching experience.

I currently hold the position of Deputy Director for Academic Affairs. When they ask me if I will become a director, I answer no. A director’s position requires nerves of steel. I am not yet ready to take responsibility for such a large number of people. In any emergency or situation that gets into the media, the school is blamed. Fighting off complaints, claims, a bunch of inspection bodies will cost too much for my health.

How much teachers actually earn

I’m not sure I can stay in the profession forever. Many will think that the problem is in modern children, but no. In 99.9% of cases, you can find an approach to them. All desire to work at school is beaten off by parents. Added to this is endless paper work.

Plans for the future

I have been a tutor for 11 years. Today I get 600 R for one lesson lasting 60 minutes, 900 R for 90 minutes. Summer months are usually empty. Few people need extra classes or preparation for exams during the summer holidays: children go to camps, villages, to the country.

First, getting up early for work: lessons start at 08:00. After the end of the school day at 14:00, it is necessary to fill out a journal, conduct additional free consultations, check notebooks and prepare for the next day. You can start tutoring from 4:00 p.m., you can take a maximum of two students a day – until the evening. That is, I leave home when the clock is not yet 07:00, and I come after 20:00, if not later. On Saturday, lessons at the school last until 12:00, classes with students begin at 15:00. On Sunday I am tutoring from 10:00 to 18:00.

This is the only way to earn those 40 thousand.

Last year, I switched to distance learning via Skype. This saves time on the road and money on depreciation of the car. To my surprise, not all parents want to study remotely, many still need face-to-face classes.

In the future, I plan to record my lessons, something like webinars. The videos will be available with a special password so that my student can watch the topic that he needs to repeat at any time. But for recording, you need more or less professional equipment so that the video and sound are of excellent quality. Now I use a regular webcam and headphones with a microphone for distance learning.

A flipchart performs the same function as a blackboard in school – it helps to explain the material. This is especially useful when solving problems: the camera is directed to the flipchart, and the child follows the progress of the solution. Yes, you can use a virtual whiteboard, but they sometimes freeze, and they don’t have good tools for chemistry yet Handles take a lot

I would like to work with developers to create educational content. Convenient, colorful, interactive, educational, useful for children. But for now, these are just plans. To do this, you still need to take at least some courses. I began to slowly work in this direction: I listen to lectures and look for free access to demo versions of educational courses. But I’m not ready to spend a lot of money on it yet: it suddenly turns out that it’s not mine at all.

In the distant future, it would be great to work with students of pedagogical universities and teach them how to teach. Or maybe become a task developer for the Unified State Examination or Olympiads.

Conclusions

Now I spend about 40 hours a week working at school. If I have a lot to do, I come early in the morning – at 7 or even at 06:30. I spend about 15 astronomical hours on tutoring.

In order for a teacher to get good money, you need to take many hours at school and at the same time work as a tutor. Not everyone can afford such a rhythm of work. I know many teachers who tried to take on a large number of students, but failed. Emotional burnout comes even faster, because fatigue accumulates in this mode of life.

This is the same as working day after day, and in the remaining time you also get ready for work.

If one day I experience professional burnout, then most likely I will go to work as a private driver. Since I can’t do anything but teach children and drive a car. I hope to pay off my mortgage by then.

Conclusions and results:

  1. To work as a tutor, you need patience and knowledge of the methodology of the subject. It is one thing to be a mathematician or a chemist, and another to be a teacher of mathematics or chemistry. A good teacher knows how to teach and knows how to deliver the material.
