The life of our colleagues in Spain and the demand for Spanish interpreter services there

The profession of an interpreter is remarkable in that it allows you to find an interesting job not only in your own country, but also where the language spoken by this specialist is widespread. One such attractive country for professionals is Spain.

Millions of tourists from all over the world come here every year. They are attracted by the rich historical heritage of the country, the mild climate, the incredible beauty of architecture, and a lot of cultural entertainment. Young people are tempted by the rich nightlife of large cities and resorts.

Many tourists require both sightseeing and everyday support from a specialist who speaks the language. At the same time, one should not think that such work is exclusively seasonal.

Beach holidays in the famous Canary Islands, for example, last all year round. On the mainland, the season is limited, but the tourist flow is fully compensated by holding exhibitions and festivals in the winter months.

The largest of them take place in Barcelona and Madrid. In addition, from December to March, the season is open at the ski resorts in the Pyrenees, which attracts numerous ski and snowboard lovers.

The active tourist and cultural life of the region attracts many Russian linguists to the country in search of work. The main destinations for Spanish interpreters are:

  • Escorting groups or individuals from Russia while traveling around the country. The purposes of such trips can be very diverse – tourism, wedding ceremonies, shopping, football matches, admission to study at the university, obtaining a residence permit, etc.;
  • business services – language specialists accompany business negotiations, meetings, work with banks, notaries, prepare contracts, business plans;
  • work at exhibition stands. At exhibitions, translators communicate with potential clients, represent the interests of the exhibitor: they talk about the success of the company, its achievements, register visitor requests;
  • participation in festivals and fashion shows. Milan hosts the famous Fashion Weeks four times a year;
  • work in the housing market – help to choose and sign a contract for the arena or purchase of real estate;
  • providing assistance to Russian patients who are being treated in clinics in the country;
  • assistance to Russian citizens in resolving issues with the local police, official authorities;
  • excursion service.

Finding a permanent job as an interpreter in Spain and concluding an employment contract while in Russia is quite difficult. In the lists of vacancies offered by the Ministry of Labor for foreign citizens, there are practically no offers for translators.

The easiest way to proceed is to first obtain a residence permit in Spain with the right to work, then start looking for a job while already in the country. The services of a Russian-speaking translator are in demand in almost any part of the state, but it is easier to find a job in large cities – Barcelona, Madrid.

Payment for translation services depends on the subject of the translation and the specific city. For example, the services of a medical interpreter in the city of Denia range on average from 20 to 80 euros per hour, depending on the complexity. From 20 euros there is an accompaniment to a doctor, consultations in pharmacies, 80 – registration of insurance and contracts for medical care.

You can find Russian-Spanish translators living in different regions through our exchange https://www.perevodchik.me/. They may be able to advise you on some good decision about finding a job.

To find a niche in Spain, a translator needs, just like any other country, to have a completed professional education in the field of linguistics, and to have a deep knowledge of certain industry topics. Knowledge of languages other than Spanish is also welcome.
