33 Companies Going Remote Permanently

For many major companies, what started out of necessity continues out of superiority. When the coronavirus began to spread in early 2020, remote work looked temporary. But recent polling suggests that around half of workplaces are planning for a hybrid model where workers can split their work time between the office and home (or a coffee shop). Just under a third said they plan to require all workers to work full-time on-site. The rest are going fully remote or distributed.

Here’s what 33 companies have planned for the “new normal.” In alphabetical order.

1. Adobe

Model: Remote

Adobe plans to gather for the ‘moments that matter.’ They encourage employees and management to develop their own “cadence” for remote and in-person work. They developed a new app for employees and teams to stay connected. Imagine a group chat with your coworkers featuring a Facebook-style news feed specific to your team and with features enabling lunch orders placed to food service.

2. Amazon

Model: Hybrid, office first

Amazon is allowing employees to work remotely two days a week. They’ve included the option for three days or more remote, at the expense of the employee’s designated brick and mortar office space. The company intends to keep offices open across the country, providing some stability for commercial real estate.

3. Amgen

Model: Hybrid, depending on role

With eight offices in the U.S., the biotech company offers a hybrid work setup for many employees. Leadership in human resources emphasizes flexibility in a post-pandemic work world. Many R&D employees and manufacturing specialists continue to report each day while others work from home full-time.

4. Apple

Model: Hybrid, office-first

Apple embraced remote work, but intends to limit most employees to no more than two remote days a week. Employees continue to call for adjustments to the plan, but in the meantime Apple’s offices in Cupertino, CA and Austin, TX remain open.

5. Capital One

Model: Hybrid with a fully remote option

The financial services firm plans for a hybrid set up for many employees, while supporting fully remote exceptions to the policy. The majority of contact center associates continue to work exclusively from home

6. Cisco

Model: Hybrid

Cisco’s approach to work centers on a hybrid setup – without the mandate for employees to participate. Teams can determine the best way to function and decide from there. Offices reach across the U.S. with Cisco headquarters located in San Jose, California.

7. Coinbase

Model: Hybrid, remote-first

Coinbase is pursuing a remote-first future with hopes of decentralizing operations from a single headquarters and broadening their talent pool to include non-local employees. Employees can choose to report to the offices in San Francisco or three other U.S. cities for a hybrid work setup.

8. Deutsche Bank

Model: Hybrid with a fully remote option

Deutsche Bank moved New York operations to a smaller office and has not ruled out downsizing to smaller offices distributed throughout the U.S. Employees can build hybrid work situations without a universal minimum requirement for in-office days.

9. Deloitte

Model: Hybrid, depending on department

The international consulting firm features more than 80 American offices, but allows workers to choose between in-office or home office setups. Remote work depends on managerial arrangements and could involve a hybrid arrangement.

10. Dropbox

Model: Hybrid, remote-first

Dropbox allows for employees to transition into permanent telecommuters. Remote work became the “day-to-day default” for individual workers starting in October 2020. Their concept includes redesigning existing office spaces to be collaborative co-working spaces for use by employees as needed.

11. Facebook

Model: Hybrid, depending on seniority

The social media company offers remote work based on seniority and with one caveat. Relocation will likely result in salary adjustment based on the new location. For now, recent graduates who join the team cannot work remotely. CEO Mark Zuckerburg predicts about half of employees will be remote over the next few years. With more than 30 offices in the U.S., candidates can choose from a number of locations based on their role.

12. Ford

Model: Hybrid with a fully remote option

Around 30,000 Ford employees can continue remote working – reporting to offices for important meetings and projects. Depending on the role, employees can choose from 22 offices in the U.S.

13. Google

Model: Hybrid with a fully remote option

Google granted many requests to continue working remotely, but will keep offices open. Reports indicate pay cuts are possible for employees choosing to work from home full-time. Employees and applicants do have more than 35 U.S. cities to choose from when deciding where they prefer to commute.

14. Hubspot

Model: Hybrid

Hubspot removed ‘ish’ from ‘remote-ish’ to allow employees more autonomy. With three options to choose from, employees can build a work style that suits them. With three office locations, employees can alter their work style once per year.

15. Indeed

Model: Hybrid with a fully remote option

Based in Connecticut and Texas, Indeed plans for permanent remote work post-pandemic. Leadership anticipates the majority of employees qualifying to work from home at least some of the time. They emphasize flexibility to allow employees to find their best working style.

16. LinkedIn

Model: Hybrid with a fully remote option

LinkedIn removed the expectation for employees to return to the office. Employees choose from two options: full-time remote or part-time remote/part-time in-office. Candidates can find offices in eight cities throughout the U.S.

17. Microsoft

Model: Hybrid, depending on role

Microsoft plans a hybrid work situation that responds to changing trends in pandemic data while working linearly toward a post-coronavirus standard of at least some remote work for most roles.

18. Pinterest

Model: Hybrid, remote-first

Pinterest announced early on that employees will not be expected to return to the office and canceled a large lease on office space in San Francisco. They intend to expand their talent pool like many remote-first companies to include employees previously excluded by geography. Pinterest still maintains offices in eight U.S. cities.

19. Salesforce

Model: Hybrid, with the option to work fully remote

Salesforce offers full-time remote work options to employees lacking access to their offices or those with roles suitable for remote work. There is room for employees who prefer hybrid work and even in-office roles.

20. SAP

Model: Hybrid, remote-first

SAP found a way to offer remote work options to all 102,000 employees around the globe. While physical offices remain, the company intends to focus more on a trust-based workplace – no matter employees’ location.

21. Shopify

Model: Hybrid, remote-first

Shopify announced its ‘digital by default’ status in May of 2020. Early on in the pandemic, CEO Tobi Lutke tweeted that most of his offices would “permanently work remotely” even after the pandemic ends. When available, employees can choose from two offices – one in Canada and one in Ireland.

22. Siemens

Model: Hybrid

Siemens announced a simple remote work policy for more than 100,000 employees. Siemens’ new policy on remote work focuses on quality over quantity. Instead of emphasizing the number of hours employees must spend in the office, the company shifted its focus to the results employees produce.

23. Slack

Model: Hybrid, depending on role

Slack opened most new roles to remote candidates while allowing current employees to work from home indefinitely. While the offices will remain in some form, employees and candidates have choices for their work style.

24. Spotify

Model: Hybrid

In a move supporting the will of individual employees, Spotify provides employees with options to work from wherever, whenever. The best part? If you want to work in the office but don’t live near the existing Spotify workspaces, they’ll rent you a workspace where you live.

25. State Farm

Model: Hybrid, remote-first

The insurance giant shuttered a dozen offices throughout the U.S. Part of these closings coincided with existing plans to consolidate into three U.S. cities: Atlanta, Dallas, and Phoenix. Leadership intends for around 40,000 employees to work remotely.

26. Square

Model: Hybrid, remote-first

Under the same leadership as Twitter, Square announced permanent work from home options in May 2020. Employees can choose to report to the office in San Francisco if desired

27. Synchrony Financial

Model: Hybrid, remote-first

Stepping out from similar financial firms, Synchrony tells employees they can’t come back to the office five days a week. As a result, leadership downsized office space with only 12 ‘hybrid hubs’ where employees can find desk space on a regular basis.

28. Target

Model: Hybrid

While retail locations continue to grow, Target relinquished one of its corporate office spaces. They promise “alternative office accommodations” for those employees, including remote-work and transfers to other brick-and-mortar offices.

29. TIAA

Model: Hybrid, depending on role

For about 85% of TIAA employees, the office is optional – at least part of the time. The Charlotte, NC office remodeled in the interest of more flexible work set-ups while the 73 other offices remain open for employees.

30. Twitter

Model: Hybrid, remote-first

CEO Jack Dorsey was one of the first tech companies to announce moving employees to permanent remote work. Workers desiring an in-office experience can choose between San Francisco and New York, along with nine other cities across the U.S.

31.

Upwork

Model: Hybrid, remote-first

Upwork continues to operate two offices, but launched a remote-first approach in 2020. Employees can operate from home full-time, or use the offices in Chicago and San Francisco.

32. Verizon

Model: Hybrid, remote-first

New hires at the communications firm receive training focused on remote work while more than 12,000 current employees in customer service and telesales remain remote. Overall, Verizon leaders envision a hybrid approach.

33. Quora

Model: Hybrid, remote-first

In June 2020, CEO Adam D’Angelo noted that technologies and remote capabilities were likely to improve much sooner than commutes, housing costs, and immigration processes. For that reason, they’ve decided to invest in building the remote work experience instead of trying to recapture the office-centric work style.

Going forward

The sudden shift to include more remote work at companies across the U.S. impacts the current workforce differently than future workers. As companies test new working models, the workforce to come can permanently alter their career path in a way unheard of even five years ago. Rather than focusing on solely remote roles or exclusively in-person positions, new workers can choose both. The first few years may take place in-office before moving to a new location – and company – as they build experience in pursuit of career success. For workers steeped in office commutes and in-person work, opportunities continue to open offering choices to continue their path or try something different. The future of work arrived earlier than expected offering unrestrained opportunity throughout each industry.

Find a remote job in a foreign company. 10 steps – Career on vc.ru

79 303
views

Every year the Oxford English Dictionary selects a “Word of the Year”. But in 2020, something went wrong. Oxford University Press described 2020 as “a year that left us speechless” and said it was impossible to find the right word for it.

But in our opinion, such a word still exists. Since last March, the use of the word “remotely” has skyrocketed around the world. Most businesses have moved away from the traditional office work model and are trying to organize employees to work from home. For developers from the CIS, this is a great opportunity to start working in the world’s best companies. Wages abroad are higher and opportunities are greater than ever before.

Here are some observations on how a developer can find remote work in 2021. And a great list of resources that can help you get a good job.

Expectations

1. Filter by keywords

To make your search much easier, use the words “remote”, “work from home”, “remote”, “work from home”, “off-site”. There is nothing worse – to see a vacancy that fits perfectly, and only at the very end to meet the postscript “work in our office”.

  • LinkedIn: To search for a remote location, type “Any Country” in the location field. And turn on the “Remote work” slider in the filters. In the search field, in addition to your position, you should also write “Remote”.
  • CareerBuilder (VPN may be required.: Enter the title of the job you are looking for + one of the keywords in the search field. Or select Work from Home in the location filter.
  • Indeed: similarly, job title + keyword. Or the item “Remotely” in the “Location” field. Also don’t forget to select the country you want to work for the company from. Depending on this, salaries for similar vacancies can vary greatly.
  • g-mate: telegram bot for selecting vacancies. You drive in the parameters you need (position, remote work, desired salary) – and he periodically sends you worthy options from Russian and foreign companies. When you find something that interests you, send your resume or link to LinkedIn. Your profile is processed and shown to companies in the format they expect it to be. An experienced IT recruiter also helps you for free: answers questions, introduces you to companies, helps you prepare for an interview and supports you in negotiations (the /human command in the chat).
  • Glassdoor: Location must be left blank. And in the search field add “remote” or “work from home”. Then click “See all jobs” and then filter by the desired salary and the date the job was published.
  • Monster: we also clean up our location, and look for our position with keywords. You may need a VPN to access the site. We highly recommend checking vacancies in different countries, they are not universal here.

2. Breaking into foreign startups

IT salaries in Russia are lower than abroad. If you have English (or you are learning it), you can start looking for alternatives.

Which companies are most likely to hire remotely right now? Startups! The remote policy is in line with their flexibility, openness, international ambitions and, importantly, saves their financial resources. There are both big pluses and huge minuses in working for foreign startups. But if you are young and still full of desire to change the world, to find work in foreign startups, you can periodically look at:

  • AngelList
  • Authentic Jobs
  • CrunchBoard
  • Mashable
  • Startupers
  • WorkInStartups
  • VentureLoop

Reality

3. Find companies with remote-first

There are special job boards that only post jobs that allow work from home. This is how many remote companies and remote employees find each other. Using them greatly increases your chances of finding a company with a good understanding of how to work remotely.

The list of remote job boards has grown so much over the past year that it deserves a separate article. But most often abroad, such platforms are used to search for remote work:

  • We Work Remotely – according to them, the largest community of remote workers in the world
  • Nodesk
  • Skip The Drive
  • Remote.co
  • Who is Hiring
  • RemoteOK
  • Working Nomads

4. Checking sites with an emphasis on IT

Niche Job Boards saves you time and energy and makes it easier to reach employers who need your skills. Startups often sit on them, and companies like Facebook and Google periodically come. You can search for remote IT jobs using:

  • StackOverflow
  • GitHub
  • Dice
  • Landing Jobs
  • Jobspresso

5. Go to Facebook

No matter how you feel about this social network, Facebook abroad is now a popular resource for recruiters to share open vacancies. Join relevant groups, for example:

  • Remote Tech Jobs
  • Digital Nomad Jobs
  • Remote Jobs, Work Anywhere
  • Jobs for Front-End Developers
  • Remote Job
  • Remote Jobs at Best Startups
  • Remote Work & Jobs for Digital Nomads

6. Using the power of bots

Have you ever wanted an assistant to help you find a good position? Recently, they have appeared – these are various bots.

Leading hiring companies have bots to screen candidates, collect CVs, and answer regular hiring questions. They are used by Amazon, and Google, and Apple, and thousands of smaller firms. Often there are even chatbots integrated into messaging apps like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp or Telegram.

Find the bots of the companies you want to work for, “chat” with them. The bot will send you notifications when new vacancies appear in the company. And can help you determine which positions are best for you. In addition, a chatbot is a great tool for practicing English!

If you’re a full-time employee, there’s nothing worse than spending your lunch breaks and nights browsing hundreds of job openings, connecting with recruiters on LinkedIn/Facebook, and building a list of “dream employers.” The bot will be a great alternative: your personal recruiter, who helps you create your own personal feed of the best vacancies.

Found the perfect role for you? It remains to get it, proving that you are better than the other candidates!

7. Create CV

Neat, professional, and time-saving for a recruiter or manager.

You can use one of the many resume templates available online, such as Canva. Or use a professional CV building site (say, Resumake). As a last resort, there’s LinkedIn Resume Assistant to help you work on your English-language resume in a Microsoft Word file.

Standard resume or CV includes:

  • First name, last name
  • The position you are looking for (the wording can be changed to fit the vacancy)
  • Skills
  • Contact information (address, e-mail, phone)
  • Links to professional profiles (portfolio, personal website, LinkedIn)
  • Short section “About me”
  • Your work experience (with a bulleted list under each of your positions, describing your responsibilities, achievements and skills acquired)
  • Education
  • Self-education (courses and certificates)
  • Knowledge of languages, interests.

You can optionally include personal references, either from serious people in the industry or simply from your former employers (this will show that you stayed on good terms with them).

+ Be careful when filling in short information about yourself. Imagine being in an elevator for two minutes with a Google recruiter (which is, at best, how long a person will check your resume before they form an opinion). A brief summary usually includes your current position, your accomplishments, and your experience in the industry in general and with certain technologies in particular. And, as an option, what position are you currently interested in (and why). Just a couple of sentences – and the recruiter already gets an idea of who you are and why you can suit him.

+ Use verbs. Don’t just list your responsibilities for each job, but start each sentence in the style of “applied”, “done”, “facilitated”, “adapted”. Harvard Law School has published a complete list of action verbs in English. With them, you automatically seem more proactive.

+ Choose one of the special techniques to improve your resume. For example, STAR method, WHO method, or CAR method. Your resume is not just a list of what you have done in life. Special techniques allow you to describe your functional skills, define your achievements and create a more compelling story of your professional development. You don’t have to be a professional writer, just follow the rules.

8. Writing a Cover Letter

The cover letter can be a separate file attached to your email or online application. Abroad, about half of IT companies require such letters from applicants. And this is more common among startups: 65% of such firms ask to send cover letters.

Using eye-tracking software, in 2018, researchers found that recruiters, on average, take just 7.4 seconds to decide on a candidate (see pdf). They check first of all your current role, last place of work, dates and level of education. Having a cover letter in such a situation is a good plus: it shows that you have a real interest in this job, and you are ready to make some effort to get it.

Preparing a cover letter is a great opportunity:

  • Review your resume
  • Review your work experience to make it easier for you to talk about it at an interview in the future
  • Practice English, improve writing skills
  • Explain some aspects that may not be clear to the recruiter and for which there is no place on the resume (for example, employment gaps).

There are no clear rules on how to write a cover letter and what information to include in it. You can keep in mind that usually when reading, the hiring party wants to see answers to such questions:

  • Do you know the name of the company that hires you?
  • Why are you interested in this particular position?
  • Why do you want to work in this particular company?
  • How did your previous experience lead you to this position?
  • What are your advantages in relation to this position?
  • Do you like what you do?

The overall goal is to show that you understand the industry and know about the company you are going to work for. When you apply for a remote job, be sure to include your ability to work from home (and how many years you’ve been doing it). You can check your final cover letter for grammar and spelling errors in Word or with free tools like After The Deadline, Grammar Slammer, Hemingway, LanguageTool. In extreme cases, Google Translate also catches the simplest errors.

9. Assessing our salary prospects

For the same work, different specialists can receive significantly different salaries – it depends on which country and which company they work for. And also, of course, on how much they asked for. It is difficult to understand remotely which requests will be relevant. How to check that you are not cheap? Here it is important to consider three factors:

+ Are you being offered a high enough salary? Review the company’s payroll strategy, especially for telecommuters. They may have a policy that the salary depends on your location. Sites like ZipRecruiter, Glassdoor, and Totaljobs can give you a general idea of the average salary for a remote developer in your field, for example in the US and the UK.

+ Will you receive financial, legal and tax support? This support may be provided by someone in the company or a contractor. They should help you deal with all the problems that always arise when applying for a new position, especially if you are from Russia and the company is foreign. You must know how to sign a contract as a remote worker, what are the tax implications and how to avoid double taxation.

+ Does the company offer benefits and various bonuses? Some firms give remote employees $1,000 to set up their home office, provide membership to a coworking space, or cover some other expenses (pay for internet, buy a good webcam, microphone, laptop). And we’re not talking about options yet.

In the US, the average bonus package is 30% of employee income. That is, a person with a salary of $55,000 receives about $16,500 more in the form of company shares, various insurances, payments to a retirement account, and so on. The total compensation ends up being $71,500. In Russia, salary bonuses account for much less. But if you don’t have sick days, insurance, paid vacations, paid courses, a paid gym and other additional benefits, you can virtually remove 10-15% from your salary. To make it easier to compare it with alternatives.

10. Interview

The recruitment process varies from company to company. It may consist of steps such as:

+ Pre-recorded interviews. There are more and more of them, especially for remote work. All candidates receive the same list of questions and shoot a video for 3-5 minutes, recording the answers to them. Here, too, you can be proactive: add a link to the video in your profile, talking about yourself, your experience and why you are suitable for this position. Candidates with pre-recorded interviews, according to our data, receive offers from companies one and a half times more often.

+ Preliminary coding tasks. “Homework” provided by the employing company. There is usually a time limit, or the task may not be trivial.

+ Technical interviews. Video interviews with developers or other tech-savvy people from the company. During the technical interview, be prepared to:

  • Analyze the code from the tasks given to you for homework.
  • Answer a series of questions about the basics of programming, your language, frameworks.
  • Pass code verification. You will need to open an IDE or text editor to do some real-time tasks and discuss them.

Usually the tasks are more difficult than the position requires. And employers are more interested in your logic in solving the problem and your explanations than in the actual solution. To get an idea of how technical interviews usually go, you can go to YouTube (for example, Joshua Fluke’s channel). There may be several technical interviews – three, four or more.

+ General interviews. A hiring manager, team leader, or even the CEO of a startup might call on zoom jitsy skype (or sometimes even on the phone) and ask you about all the little things you add to your resume, your experience with different tools, and technologies, your soft skills and so on. Get ready to answer specific questions about remote work: how do you work on it, and what are your plans for the future. This, as a rule, already includes a cultural fit check (if you do not get a job in an IT giant).

+ Final interview. Congratulations! You’ve passed the technical interview, and you qualify for the social skills company. At this stage, there is a discussion of working conditions: the amount of wages, the desired schedule, and so on. If all the stars (or budget items) converge, after this stage you will conclude an employment contract and will be able to start performing your duties.
