How DevOps engineers save money for companies

A DevOps engineer is a universal soldier in a programming team: he sets up an application build, deploys infrastructure in the cloud, and makes it scalable and repeatable.

A good engineer helps the product move quickly (roll out a new version 10 times a day, for example), and when no one bothers him, optimize the company’s infrastructure and money. nine0003

When asked to give an example of how DevOps helped a business, I always tell the story of an engineer who migrated the entire infrastructure of an AI application to a new type of server in 2 months. A new type of server was with video cards, so specific calculations began to work out ten times faster, as a result – a decrease in the number of servers. Suddenly, the startup shot, and the infrastructure could not cope – the old approaches in the style of “order a server, go to it, install the application” did not work under the load and pressure of users. The engineer decided to automate the creation of servers and move to a cheap cloud, finished just before Black Friday. The company continued to exist due to the fact that it managed to earn that day. nine0003

The entrance to specialization is thorny and difficult: unfortunately, it is impossible to read the book “How to learn DevOps in 21 days” and become a successful engineer. First, because such a book does not exist and cannot exist. Secondly, because the DevOps methodology is based on two specializations: programming and administration. This means that you need to deeply understand both areas at the same time.

I have met three types of DevOps engineers:

  1. Advanced programmers who had to customize the process of building and deploying the application on different environments. The next step – the programmer understands that he is interested in understanding how his application works in a real “combat” environment, and comes to questions about how to scale it and make it fault-tolerant. As a result, he gains expertise at the intersection of Dev and Ops.
  2. Advanced system administrators who have abandoned the usual model of “work – do not touch”, tried to automate routine actions and (most importantly!) Communicated with programmers. It is generally accepted that before the DevOps methodology, there was a war between the departments of operations and development. Because the business set different, conflicting goals and objectives for each of the departments. And those who abandoned the usual interaction model and began to figure out together with programmers how it works, also received expertise at the junction of Dev and Ops.
  3. Newbies who jumped straight into DevOps specialization. nine0199 These guys realized in time that the direction is popular and in demand, and they immediately studied in the right vector. These guys have the least experience in IT (because the direction is young, in Ukraine it is just over 5 years old), but as a result, their expertise is maximally tailored to the market. These are the most versatile guys who have already grown up on the right soil: they do not need to drag along the baggage of old stereotypes, but often they just lack “combat” experience.

My career has combined the second and third approaches: I started with a fully automatic installation of Windows over a network on several computers and changed cartridges in printers. nine0003

At some point, it seemed to me that crawling under the tables of accountants and connecting mice is not what I would like to do. And after analyzing the market, I realized: with my knowledge, it would be most logical to move into the magical and incomprehensible DevOps. These were still those days when there were almost no vacancies and no one understood what DevOps was. This is where my journey began.

How to pass the first interview as an aspiring engineer

At the beginning of a career, this is the most stressful situation possible. How to properly interview is a huge topic for a separate article. At one time, it became clear to me that at the interview you need to sell: sell your experience, your skills and approaches. A resume does not sell – it declares a set of technologies, shows “what to find fault with”, and “are there those words that we need”. nine0003

It’s also bad to talk about your CV right at the interview: you constantly fall out of your thoughts or someone interrupts you. Then I thought: how to make it not dry? And he took the very first tool of the salesman – a presentation.

As a result, I posted several slides about the current infrastructure: where is my work here and how is it useful. In the first iteration (iteration in programming – in a broad sense – the organization of data processing, in which actions are repeated many times without leading to calls to themselves – approx. ed. ) these were screenshots of graphs and various technical terms. The result turned out to be excellent: any checklists and prepared questions were lost during the interview, the opponent was interested in what and how it works, and began to ask about the presentation. How did you do it here? Why? What is the result? And I swam in the Pacific Ocean of my expertise.

I have had to interview and hire numerous times. In my subjective experience, the gradation is something like this:

  • Junior DevOps Engineer – $300 – $1500
  • Middle DevOps Engineer – $1500 – $3500
  • Senior DevOps Engineer – $3500+

There is another type of engineer: job-hoppers. This is when a specialist goes to interviews and asks for + $ 500 to his last offer. Such engineers manage to ask for up to $7,000 with very mediocre knowledge, but I don’t know if anyone pays them that kind of money in the long term.

Gradation with prefixes to Junior/Middle/Senior positions is absolutely conditional and most often speaks of a company’s strictly limited budget for a vacancy and a desire to save money. For example, the following wording is often found: we are looking for a Middle for the salary of a Middle, and in the requirements – experience and knowledge for a Senior. Unpleasant. nine0003

I have no desire to tell fables about gigantic salaries or, conversely, to underestimate the real figures. I do not need to look for engineers and try to prove to them that they really want a lot. On the contrary: I would really like you to earn more, so let’s figure out together what the real picture looks like.

DOU salary statistics for a DevOps engineer with 6+ years of experience

As a rule, out of these 6+ years, there will really be 4-5 in specialization at best (reference to the first part, where I mentioned that the direction is young, in Ukraine he is just over 5 years old), and the rest of the experience is somewhere nearby (in programming or administration). nine0003

The median on this graph is completely uninteresting, it is as useful as the average temperature in a hospital. Let’s look at the third quartile: these are not the highest salaries yet, but quite close to real ones. It turns out that the engineer may well claim $5,000.

Few people know, but the survey results are stored on Github. I filtered for you only DevOps Engineers, in total I got 282 questionnaires. Of these, with a salary of $3500+, there are 76 profiles, with $5000+ – 26 profiles. Google Sheets with filtered data are available here.

This data is close to real, but still not real. Real salaries are somewhat higher, because engineers are busy people, and not everyone wants to share information about their salary. Recently, the UkrOps community asked which of the participants fills out a questionnaire. It turned out that only 30% of those surveyed fill them out, and they are mostly not filled out by engineers who earn above the market price. “For obvious reasons.” nine0003

Such reasons are incomprehensible to me, because the more real data is analyzed, the easier it will be to prove and justify your salary expectations and pull up the entire specialization.

And I’ll add an obvious point: in the survey that I’m analyzing, there are only 282 questionnaires. At the same time, it is not clear how many engineers are in DevOps. Linkedin finds 8250 DevOps engineers in the Ukraine region, but the actual number will be higher.

Everything we’ve discussed won’t work if the engineer isn’t up to par in terms of technology. It is impossible to jump over your head with a limited set of old tools and approaches. I won’t go into each of the technologies, but will do a higher level overview. Let’s look at the main points and divide the entire expertise into parts.

  4. You need to know, understand and be able to do a lot. If you can figure out the new app that was sent to you 10 minutes ago, you’re good to go.
