Fortum solar power plants in Russia

The sun is an inexhaustible resource for generating clean energy and building a CO2-free energy system of the future.

The experience of the corporation in the development of solar generation is, first of all, the construction and operation of solar power plants in India with a capacity of 685 MW. Another active area is the installation in Finland, Norway and Sweden of individual solar panel kits for homeowners, which allows them to save an average of 370 euros per year on their electricity bills.

      Development tools and methods

      How it works

Solar panels convert the continuous flow of energy from the sun into electricity

      Low emissions

      No CO2 emissions

Solar energy does not require hydrocarbon fuel, so there is no carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere

      Cost efficient

      Low operating costs

After installing solar panels, operating costs are quite low compared to other types of production

      Solar energy in Russia

PJSC Fortum has three solar power plants in the Orenburg Region and the Republic of Bashkortostan. The company acquired SES in 2017. Within 15 years, Bugulchanskaya, Grachevskaya and Pleshanovskaya SES will be guaranteed to receive payment for electricity on the terms of contracts for the provision of capacity.

Bugulchanskaya SPP has become the second industrial solar power plant in Bashkortostan (excluding mini-SPP).

Specific electricity generation at SPP is approximately 1,250 kWh. The same amount of electricity is produced by similar solar power plants in Central and Southern Europe.

The installed capacity utilization factor (ICUF) at the plant in 2018 was 18%. This is 4% above the average for solar power plants.

Arshanskaya SES – the largest solar power plant in Russia

On July 1, 2022, the second phase of the Arshanskaya SES with an installed capacity of 37. 6 MW began supplying electricity and capacity to the Wholesale Electricity and Capacity Market (WECM). The installed capacity of the Arshan SPP after the commissioning of the second stage is 115.6 MW, which makes the plant the largest solar generation facility in Russia.

The solar power plant is located near Elista and is managed by Fortum. During the construction of the solar power plant, photovoltaic modules made in Russia were used. The degree of equipment localization is confirmed by the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade.

      Solar FAQ

      What is solar energy?

Energy generation method that converts solar energy into electricity. Solar panels are often placed on buildings or concentrated in solar stations to get the maximum amount of light.

      How do solar panels work?

Solar panel photovoltaic cells turn sunlight into a sustainable resource. An inverter converts DC electricity into AC electricity. The resulting electricity is fed into the grid or stored in a battery.

      How expensive are solar panels?

The cost depends on how many, where and how the panels are installed. However, every year solar energy becomes more and more affordable.

Let’s not forget that this is one of the key methods of producing clean energy, and as economies of scale lower prices, its importance will only increase.

What are the advantages of a solar battery?

The main advantage is that it is a renewable, clean source of electricity.

Solar power is scalable, meaning it can be produced on an industrial scale.

On a small scale, additional electricity can be stored in a battery or fed back into the grid.

The sun is generous with energy, the only limitation is our ability to convert it into electricity in an economical way.
