Early Learning Programs

Contact

Early childhood includes the years of birth to age 8. During this time, supportive relationships and early learning experiences provide a strong foundation for emerging social, emotional, language, cognitive and physical skills. These experiences begin at home and are supported through a ranges of services. Collective efforts among families, early learning programs, and communities play a vital role in supporting the learning and development of young children.

Early investments in families and learners is recognized in Minnesota’s Ten Commitments to Equity. By starting early, we can provide each student with increased access to high-quality learning experiences where each student realizes positive outcomes.

Minnesota provides a range of early learning programs and services for families and children aged birth to kindergarten. The array of programs focus on supporting the healthy development of the “whole child” by offering opportunities for both families and children to enhance their learning and development, achieve positive outcomes for children, and support their transition to kindergarten. These programs are often a child and family’s first opportunity to engage with the school system, and therefore, set an important tone for future school success. Programs include: Early Childhood Family Education, Early Learning Scholarships, Early Childhood Screening, Head Start and Early Head Start, Help Me Grow, Infant Toddler Intervention and Preschool Special Education, School Readiness Program, as well as Voluntary Prekindergarten and School Readiness Plus. The programs are offered through local districts and charter schools, sometimes in partnership with Head Start or community child care, and supported by Minnesota’s Department of Education Early Learning Services Division. Find more specific information about each program under Early Learning Programs on the left navigation menu.

The benefits of investing in quality early childhood education can be sustained through a well-aligned, high-quality prekindergarten through grade three (P3) education. Research indicates that, in addition to the educational benefits to children attending high-quality programs, there are several benefits to the community and our state. These benefits include: narrowing the achievement gap; a reduction in the need for special education and remediation; better health outcomes; reduced need for social services and lower criminal justice costs; and increased self-sufficiency and productivity among families.

See the Department of Human Services for information about community child care programs that they license and support.

Summer Preschool Funding

The purpose of Summer Preschool Funding is to support children before they enter kindergarten, and specifically those who have experienced life circumstances that may have prevented them from being able to attend a high-quality early childhood program due to COVID-19.
In summer 2021, $20 million in Summer Preschool Funds were awarded to school districts, charter schools, Head Start programs, child care centers, and licensed family child care providers. Programs were required to have a Parent Aware Three- or Four-Star rating to be eligible.

If programs did not spend their full allocation in summer 2021, they were allowed to roll remaining funds forward to provide summer programming in summer 2022.

Youth summer school | Russian Geographical Society

The Summer School of the Russian Geographical Society is a communication platform for the exchange of experience and the transfer of knowledge about the current state of geographical science to young professionals, contributing to the activation of their participation in research and social activities.

Participants of the Summer School learn firsthand about the latest discoveries in the field of geography, get a unique opportunity to meet famous lecturers, outstanding researchers, famous travelers. They discuss topical issues of geography and geoecology, learn about the proper organization of scientific research and gain practical skills in speaking, conducting discussions and disputes. Moreover, Summer School students will learn how science develops under the influence of social order. nine0003

The Summer School program is aimed at expanding personal professional and business ties, provides an opportunity to present and promote one’s own projects, participate in joint projects, stimulate the search for new ideas.

Lecturers of the School of the Russian Geographical Society are leading theoreticians and practitioners in the field of physical, economic, social geography, psychologists, methodologists, representatives of government agencies and institutions, travelers, famous personalities. nine0003

The Scientific and Organizing Committee is headed by the Dean of the Faculty of Geography of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov, First Vice-President of the Russian Geographical Society Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Nikolai Kasimov.

4th-5th year students, undergraduates, graduate students and young specialists in the field of geography, ecology, tourism and nature management aged 18 to 35 from Russia and neighboring countries are invited to participate in the Summer School.

The first Summer School was held in 2013, and participation in it for many young scientists became an impetus for further professional and personal growth. Thus, the winner of the project competition in the section “Economic, social and medical geography” Ilya Smirnov from Tver in 2014 won a grant from the Russian Geographical Society, which was presented to him by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Society, President of Russia Vladimir Putin. At the same time, from 14 to 16 April 2014, the winner of the First School, Galina Rodko from Novosibirsk, took part in the Russian delegation at the annual international conference of the Association of Geographers of Great Britain. nine0003

The second Summer School was held from 20 to 27 July 2014 at the Cultural and Educational Center “Ethnomir” in the Kaluga region. Its listeners were 35 young scientists from Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. During this time, the guys were able to attend lectures by academicians, professors, famous scientists, famous nature photographers, explorers and travelers. The program of the Summer School turned out to be rich and varied – lectures and debates, master classes and round tables, simulation games and trainings, creative meetings with travelers and photographers, thematic excursions and even city orientation. As a result of one of the master classes, nine students of the school got the opportunity to implement their ideas on environmental education on Lake Baikal as part of the “360 minutes for Baikal” campaign. nine0003

The third Summer School was held at the same site from 23 to 29 August 2015. Its participants were 34 people – students, graduate students and young scientists from Russia and the CIS countries. 34 teachers from different countries of the world spoke to the students of the school. The educational program included trainings, discussions, creative meetings, master classes, excursions, defense of research projects in three areas: physical geography; ecology and nature management; economic, social and recreational geography. The best project in each category was awarded a diploma and special prizes from the Russian Geographical Society and the Vokrug Sveta magazine. School graduates Tatyana Oberyukhtina and Mikhail Bukovsky took part in the Second All-Russian Youth Meeting of the Russian Geographical Society. In 2016, Tatyana was declared the winner of the RGS grant project competition, proposing to hold a Geographical Olympiad-quest for young people “On de Gennin’s Roads”. nine0003

The fourth Summer School was held from 13 to 21 August 2016. The educational program involved 34 students and 33 teachers from around the world. The organizers of the Summer School have prepared a rich scientific and cultural program for its participants. It included theoretical classes, master classes, interactive games, brain rings, quests. The program was devoted to physical and economic geography, as well as tourism, ecology and other related disciplines. The closing ceremony of the summer school on the evening of August 20 was much more like a theatrical skit than the end of a scientific conference. “This is not only intensive scientific studies, but also the beginning of a wonderful friendship,” the guys agreed. nine0003

The Fifth Summer School returned to “Ethnomir” from 19 to 26 August 2017, the main theme of which was environmental protection. During the week, 35 geographers from Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus were able to gain knowledge about the environmental problems of our time and the environmental situation in the regions of Russia, about modern trends and technologies in the field of ecology and environmental protection, about domestic research and achievements in geography, ecology and related sciences . The program included master classes, trainings, film screenings, excursions, intellectual games, practical exercises, lectures by leading experts and scientists, as well as meetings with famous travelers and media representatives. When?” Elena Potanina, executive producer, director of RD Studio LLC Kristina Kozlova and documentary filmmaker, author of films about Antarctica Olga Stefanova. nine0003

The sixth Summer School “Geography for All” was held from 19 to 26 August 2018 in St. Petersburg.
