Why you should not be afraid to send your child to summer camp

Many parents are afraid to send their children to summer camps. After all, there the kids will be completely alone, who will make sure that they eat? What if something happens? And in general, he will fall into a bad company, acquire bad habits. You never know what can happen there, away from mom and dad! And those who themselves were in such camps in their childhood also know from their own experience what is happening in these places. A good place will not be called a “camp”! nine0003

But it’s not so scary. After all, a summer camp is all about studying, outdoor games, communication with peers, and a sea of impressions. Let’s try to debunk some myths and horror stories about this type of children’s recreation. To do this, we present the opinion of psychologists and the stories of parents from the u-mama forum and other parental resources about whether children like to go to children’s camps, what they do there and what they can learn there.

Children will be bored and ask to be picked up in a week

You think:
My Vasya hasn’t grown up to that yet. He ties his shoelaces every other time, but without his bear he can’t fall asleep at all! Well, who will follow him there? He won’t eat anything and leave hungry, he is so capricious about food.

And then he will call and whine to take him away. But the money has already been paid, and what to do? Follow him or is it okay, will he survive? Why do I need these experiences, better at home.

WHEN SHOULD CHILDREN BE LET OUT UNATTENDED? nine0008

Psychologists say:
Your child will never become independent unless you start letting him go. It is in such camps that he can learn how to make a bed or peel potatoes, and at the same time make decisions without outside advice. A child in the camp will still have to cope with problems alone, and this will benefit “mother’s sons” and “daddy’s daughters.”

As for boredom and requests to pick up, it is worth dealing with each situation separately. In some cases, the child really should be taken away from an unfavorable environment, however, if it is only a matter of separation from the mother, and everything else is fine, there is no need to rush. nine0003

Parents’ opinion:
“I’m 12. He misses me wildly in the camp, when I arrive, he hugs me and doesn’t let go. But mom is not the center of the universe! Friends, entertainment, activities are an important part of life. And his mother will always be there when he needs him, he knows it.”

“If a child calls for 5 days with tears and sobs, I would definitely take it. And more than once this is not a sign of attachment to the “mother’s skirt”, it’s just that there are not camp children, she herself was like that. nine0039

“In my opinion, this is an opportunity for a child to be independent, that is, apart from his parents, a completely different life, new communication, an opportunity to express himself. Mine has been driving since seven years, I am very satisfied.”

“Adaptation…probably. my day is also fine… happy… but a little bit of a problem, either she can’t find her cap in the canteen, or she lost her toothbrush, or her phone ran out of battery… she also howls uncontrollably. .. right to the point of shaking. I’m calling to reassure… I’m not happy with this camp anymore. the daughter endures the brain, but only in the evening, in the morning in the afternoon everything is super! nine0039

Children are not supervised enough

You think:
So what are these counselors? They themselves are still children, what will they follow there! They only have parties in their minds, but love, where should they do with the kids. After all, they will be left to the mercy of fate. Or they will lose, how many children they have there – one less, one more. And if my Masha is offended, the doll will be taken away, they won’t even figure it out. Sort of like: “Her problems.” No, I won’t let you offend my child. nine0003

Psychologists say:
Let’s start with the fact that counselor is a profession. And this is done by fans of their craft who love children and who like to mess around with them. If you are not sure about the competence of counselors, request information about their professional experience in advance.

HOW TO MONITOR YOUR CHILD AND IS IT WORTH IT?

The safety of children’s camps is the main task of the management, so the chances that something will happen in a good modern camp are even less than in the dacha of grandparents. Many camps are equipped with cameras, smoke detectors, excellent medical units. Just for your own peace of mind, check this information. nine0003

When it comes to children’s conflicts, this is often the case – no one will intervene. But this is not so bad, the child must learn on his own, without the help of adults, to find ways out of difficult situations. You will not be able to protect him forever, perhaps the school of life will be harsh, but it will definitely come in handy in the future.

Parents’ opinions:
“For two years in a row, we observed just a small camp there – 40 people of different ages, from 8 to 14 years old. They lived next to the embankment in a rotten building on the territory of some inactive child care center, next to the Zelenogradsk sanatorium. We wandered alone, not a single adult was ever around. along the embankment, by the sea, near the trampolines. I walked past and kept thinking – and parents generally know where their children are, how they live here. nine0039

“5th grade, I try to persuade her, but it’s enough. I called this morning and asked to pick it up. complains about the boys. They tore her hare, then at night they come to the ward. then something else. she has all the complaints about the boys. Then they take her skate without asking and ride around the ward. I was crying yesterday…

“Yes, mothers! Now these camps are stuffed with so much equipment! On the contrary, I feel sorry for the children. They tried to wave at the river at night – they caught it, they went out of the territory – a siren. It would be better if everything was like we had in pioneer))). nine0039

“mine travels all the time and nothing has ever happened, and not with him, not in a group. He said last year someone broke his leg, fell down the stairs, but it can be everywhere, both at school and at home. It used to be offended, but when he arrived, he asked to give it to boxing, now no one offends him).

Children will be taught to drink, smoke and swear there. From there, children bring swear words, cigarettes, alcohol, and even worse. After all, there are completely different children, different companies, the child must be protected from this! I was there myself, it was there that they taught me how to smoke, I already know! nine0003

Psychologists say:
Sooner or later children will come to the point that they want to try something forbidden. More important here is your attitude to the issue. Before sending a child on a trip, say the main points: what to do if the elders offer to smoke or drink? What if someone starts showing romantic interest?

WHAT DO THE CHILDREN BRING FROM KINDERGARTEN?

As for swearing, it’s not scary at all. Children now know him from kindergarten, and remember yourself at their age. It all depends solely on your upbringing. nine0003

If you’re worried about your little one getting into unfavorable company, read more reviews about a particular camp. Ask other parents on the forums, go on an introductory day to see if this atmosphere is right for your baby.

Parents’ opinion:
“As far as I remember from my childhood, no one taught me anything bad at the children’s camp. But now times have changed so much that in a children’s camp they can teach anything. Starting from smoking, and ending with sexual “enlightenment”. nine0039

“I learned everything at the camp. At the age of 6, I was enlightened about where babies come from and what menstruation is. At 8 years old, I already knew how to make up (or it seemed to me then). At the age of 10, older girls gave me a smoke and a taste of vodka – they freely went outside the camp to the neighboring village.

“Mine brought a swear word, they said that they offered cigarettes, but returned from a shift a month before school — the words disappeared, it’s like in a company of loaders — you speak like a loader. Then it passes, we do not swear. And as for cigarettes – well, anyway, someday he will try, we are having conversations, I hope they will help. nine0039

“Nothing like that!!! He returned the same, maybe he is silent about something, of course, you can’t check it, but it seems that he didn’t notice anything harmful. Only the word “high”, which directly freezes me. But that’s not the worst thing that could happen! But I spent the whole month outdoors, and not on the phone.”
