Free or cheap summer camp options for 2022

When the school year wraps up, kids look forward to lazier days spent poolside, riding bikes or having sleepovers with friends and enjoying quality time with family. But chances are they’ll make even more amazing summer memories, as well as continue to learn and grow, if they attend a summer program for kids.

“Day camp keeps my 9- and 7-year-old boys in a routine but allows for more running around and play, which is so needed after spending all school year learning,” says Kelly Kamenetzky, a mom of three from Los Angeles. “We choose two or three and alternate them throughout the summer. This way, the boys get to focus on different interests. One week it might be soccer, the next engineering, the next a general recreational camp.”

The bevy of benefits aside, many families face one main drawback: the summer camp price tag. Day camp tuition averages about $178 a day this year while resident camp tuition averages $448 a day, according to data from the American Camp Association (ACA).

Thankfully, there are affordable summer camps and even free summer camps that can make the decision to enroll a child a stress-free no-brainer.

According to Tom Rosenberg, president and CEO of the ACA, families can identify more affordable camp options by using ACA’s Find a Camp tool. “Additionally, it can be helpful to talk with local organizations such as churches, synagogues, civic organizations and clubs to learn about affordable and free summer programming.”

Here’s the (affordable) lowdown for kids camps 2022. These 14 cheap or free summer camps are worth looking into.

1. The YMCA

Ys all over the country offer day camps, as well as overnight programs for 970,000 kids and adults every summer. They also serve more than 439,000 youth, teens, families, school and retreat groups through group camping overnight programs. A couple examples of sleep-away camps run by the organization include Camp Lawrence (for boys) and Camp Nokomis (for girls) in Meredith, New Hampshire. There’s also the Countryside YMCA, which has three different locations in Ohio, that’s $155 a week for members ($180 a week for non-members) and runs from 9 a.m to 4 p.m.

Kamenetzky praises her local Los Angeles YMCA programs, saying, “We give the kids options of choosing one or two ‘special’ camps that are a little pricier, but the rest of the summer we’ll send them to camp at a local park or YMCA that tend to have really great deals and are, frankly, just as fun.”

Cost: Prices vary depending on location and type of camp, but most have options to adjust fees based on income.

Where to find a camp: Use their handy YMCA search tool to find a camp near you.

2. Your local parks and recreation department

“Local recreation agencies create quality programs that are cost-effective for the families in their respective communities,” says Shanna Battle, outreach coordinator for the city of Richmond, Virginia’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities.

She says families with two or more kids might also be able to take advantage of multiple child discounts, as well as financial assistance programs. For instance, in New York City, Riverbank State Park in Harlem hosts a day camp during the summer that’s $550 for five weeks, and a select few summer camp programs located in low-income neighborhoods are free. In San Francisco, the Police Activities League offers free programs focused on various activities, from martial arts to cheerleading and even fishing.

In general, by utilizing city facilities like schools, parks and recreation departments are able to offer campers a wide variety of indoor and outdoor activities.

Cost: Prices vary depending on location and type of camp, but many will offer multiple child discounts and financial assistance.

Where to find a camp: Contact your local parks and recreation department.

3. Places of worship

Many churches, synagogues and other places of worship offer affordable summer camps for kids.  Vacation bible school offers programming for school-aged children to churches throughout the country. These programs are also open to families who are not otherwise involved with the faith community. The Vacation Bible Camp at the Community Congregation Church in Short Hills, New Jersey offers a week-long program for kids ages 3 through 10 for $75 per child, and it runs from 9:00 a.m. to 2 p.m.

You might also find that local camps are not necessarily affiliated with the place of worship but simply held there, like a camp run by Mr. Bond’s Science Guys in East Nashville, Tennessee. Carol Buttenham, managing and marketing director of the company says they’re able to utilize the local church’s space free of charge in order to make the program available to lower-income families.

Cost: Prices vary depending on location and type of camp, but many will offer scholarships or options for lower-income families.

Where to find a camp: Contact your local place of worship.

4. Boy Scout and Girl Scout camps

If your child is already participating in either of these programs — which usually cost about $40 to $60 per year — you’ll be able to take advantage of their summer programs. Both Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts of the USA run a variety of affordable camps for kids. There are day camp and sleep-away options, and your child doesn’t have to be involved with scouts before signing up for the camps. One example: In Massachusetts, day camps run by the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts start as low as $80 (plus, a $40 Girl Scout registration fee).

Cost: All fees vary by local council and are often open to all with options to adjust fees based on income levels.

Where to find a camp: You can find a Girl Scout Camp near you or a Boy Scout troop near you by searching Boy Scouts of America.

5. The Fresh Air Fund

New York City residents can take advantage of the Fresh Air Fund, which offers kids from the five boroughs the opportunity to experience the wilderness. The Fresh Air Fund offers free summer camps for qualified families, and it also runs a program that allows NYC kids to spend a week with a host family living in a greener neck of the woods, like Maine, New Hampshire or Vermont.

Cost: Free.

Where to find a camp: Visit the Fresh Air Fund.

6. The Council for the Arts

Check with your local Council for the Arts to find summer arts programs for kids and teens that are free or low-cost. For example, the Pennsylvania Academy for the Fine Arts (PAFA) in Philadelphia offers a seven-week art camp for kids aged 5 through 14 that costs $340 ($400 for non-members) and runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Cost: Low-cost or free.

7. The Salvation Army

For example, a camp in Port Washington, New York, costs $285 for a five-day session that runs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Cost: Program costs vary, depending on location.

Where to find a camp: Find a Camp Invention program near you via the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

9. DIY at-home camp

A do-it-yourself, at-home camp can work if you have extra time in the summer months or you plan to hire a summer nanny or summer sitter. Simply build your own agenda of activities that teach kids STEM or art, among other skills. You might also want to check out a monthly subscription kit like Raddish, which aims to teach kids ages 4 to 14 about cooking and nutrition. Each kit features three illustrated recipe guides all built around a theme, as well as a cooking tool, apron patch, shopping list, activity and table talk cards, as well as a bonus video recipe. You can also take advantage of online bonus materials, like musical playlists to match the theme and a lesson plan that weaves in math, science, history, art and more. Subscriptions start at just $24 per kit.

Cost: Prices vary depending on the program and materials.

Where to find a camp: Check out the Raddish website for their monthly kit.

10. Museum camps

Museums across the country hold affordable summer camps for museum members and non-members alike, often providing discounts and scholarships. For instance, the Health Museum in Houston runs a Summer Discovery Camp focused on STEM, medical science and the human body. The museum offers a scholarship awarded based on potential and need for enrichment in an informal learning environment. If you live near Brooklyn, New York, the Brooklyn Children’s Museum offers a number of affordable summer camps and programs that run throughout the summer for $250. And while it’s not quite a conventional camp setup, the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh has summer volunteering opportunities for teens aged 14-18 from June through August.

Cost: Prices vary depending on location and type of camp, but many offer scholarships and/or financial assistance.

Where to find a camp: Visit your local museum website.

11. Apple store camps

If you happen to live close to an Apple store, your 8- to 12-year-old can take advantage of a program focused on exploring music, coding, movie-making or art and design. The tech company’s completely free summer program spans three 90-minute sessions. It does bear noting that all campers must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian for the duration of Apple Camp.

Cost: Free.

Where to find a camp: Visit the Apple site to find information on your local store’s program.

12. Girls Who Code

Another technology-based program that’s absolutely free: the Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program (SIP), which runs for seven weeks and is offered to girls who are rising juniors and seniors. The goal of the program is to arm young women with knowledge of computer science, exposure to tech jobs and a supportive network of thousands of girls across the country.

14. STEM programs

The Institute for Broadening Participation is a fantastic resource for parents of kids in grades K-8 who are looking for a STEM summer program that’s either free or scholarship-based. Their search results include opportunities all over the country, such as the Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK) in Washington, D.C., one of the National Society of Black Engineers’ (NSBE) contributions to increasing the representation of Black students in STEM, and the Eureka! Program in Worcester, Massachusetts, which aims to spark girls’ interest in STEM.

Cost: Prices vary depending on program, but many are free or scholarship-based.

Where to find a camp: Check out the Institute for Broadening Participation.

How to save on conventional camp programs

While these options may resonate, your child could be interested in a camp that requires a more traditional tuition cost. If your child is interested in a camp that seems out of your price range, there are various ways to make it more affordable. Here are things to consider:

  • Financial aid. “Almost all camps offer financial assistance and scholarships for families and campers in need,” notes Rosenberg, adding that parents who are interested in receiving support need to apply directly to the camp, as early as possible. “Camps identify funding for ‘camperships’ — partial or full scholarships — and make decisions about which campers they need to fund prior to the start of the season.”
  • Special discounts and payment plans. According to Rosenberg, most camps offer special discounts in the form of early registration, full-season sign-up, sibling discounts and late registration to fill an empty spot. “For families who enroll early, many camps also offer a structured payment plan throughout the year,” he adds.
  • Government assistance. Families can also receive aid through the Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account and the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit.

What if you could give your child a magical summer without breaking the bank?

Summer camp is always a fantastic experience for children. However, many low-income families believe they cannot send their children to summer camp because of the cost.

Fortunately, there are plenty of summer camps for low-income families. Most of them are very affordable, and some are entirely free, which is excellent for families already using one or more special benefit programs.

What are these camps, though, and how can you get started? Keep reading to get answers!

Police Athletic League

If you’re looking for summer camps for low-income families, one of the best organizations is the Police Athletic League. PAL offers completely free summer camps for children 5-13. And PAL has locations in over a dozen states, so there may be one conveniently located near you.

What do these camps have to offer? Activities like crafts, sports, field trips, physical fitness, and more are available for kids.

If you like PAL, the organization offers other activities beyond summer camps. Kids can enjoy afterschool activities, art programs, fitness programs, and other things to help children strengthen their minds and body.

The YMCA

Everybody is familiar with the YMCA, but most think of it as an affordable place to work out. However, far too many are unaware of the summer camp opportunities that come courtesy of this organization.

While these summer camps are not free, they are very affordable. And there are different kinds of camp opportunities, including Camp Lawrence for the boys and Camp Nokomis for the girls; both are located in New Hampshire. Other locations include other camps, including Ohio serving as Home to three different Countryside YMCA locations.

The different camps have different price points, making finding a cheap summer camp that is still fun and fulfilling. And if they enjoy camping, then your children may enjoy taking advantage of other YMCA services offered throughout the year.

The Salvation Army

Like the YMCA, most people are familiar with the Salvation Army. Still, many are unaware of the full range of services the Salvation Army offers to local communities. And this includes some unforgettable summer camp experiences for children!

The summer camps offered by the Salvation Army are designed for children between the ages of 5 and 14. The camps are not free, but each one costs no more than $50 a week per child. Should you send multiple children, some discounts reduce the cost to $40 for your second child and $30 for your third child.

Once the children get a little older, they may enjoy checking out the youth camp designed for teens up to 17 years old. And like the YMCA, the Salvation Army offers a range of helpful services, including counseling, financial assistance, character-building programs, and so much more.

Castle Rock Avid4 Adventure

If you live in or near Boulder, Colorado, you should consider sending your kids to the Castle Rock Avid4 Adventure. This summer camp is designed for children attending preschool to those attending seventh grade.

What makes this particular summer camp affordable is the scholarships the organization hands out. Each year, Castle Rock hands out 300 scholarships so that children from low-income families can enjoy 11 weeks of awesome summer adventures. The exact amount of financial assistance depends on a family’s income. It is possible to attend Castle Rock as a completely free summer camp.

There are different adventures due to the variety of camps. Younger children, for example, typically enjoy the adventure camp because it is filled with activities like hiking, kayaking, and mountain biking. Older children may enjoy the camps focusing on teamwork and leadership, mainly because they help prepare them for high school and beyond.

The Fresh Air Fund

These summer camp opportunities have been around a bit longer than others. As an example, the Fresh Air Fund has been around since 1877.

This camp is designed for children residing within New York’s five boroughs. So long as you meet the camp’s financial qualifications, it’s possible to send your children to upstate New York for an unforgettable camping experience.

What is the camping experience all about? In short, the Fresh Air Fund is all about giving children outdoor adventures. Yes, this may be beneficial for all children. However, kids that may be cooped up all winter might long for a change of scenery could genuinely enjoy this long-running sleepaway camp.

Boy Scout/Girl Scout Camps

Most of the summer camp experiences in our guide don’t require any previous membership. However, there is one notable exception. And that is the camp experience offered by both the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts.

Membership in these organizations usually costs between $40 and $60 per year. Suppose you’re already paying for a membership. In that case, your child may have access to some of the affordable summer camp options, such as sleepaway camps. And the organization will price these summer camps based on your income level.

What if your child is not a Scouts member, or you don’t want to send them away that long? In that case, you should explore the different day camp options these organizations offer. These options provide a smaller version of the entire camp away experience to Scouts and non-Scouts alike. The costs are still very affordable.

Microsoft’s YouthSpark Summer Camp

The chances are that you imagine a lot of time outdoors when you think about the term “summer camp. ” But at its core, a good camp is about more than the setting. It’s about helping your child have fun while learning some efficient skills.

And that’s the concept at the heart of Microsoft’s annual YouthSpark Summer Camp. Before COVID-19, these camps were designed so that your child could attend sessions at physical Microsoft stores. Instead, these camps are entirely online, but they still offer valuable skills to children.

What is this camp all about? First, your child will learn digital skills like coding, moviemaking, and how to use technology to help those in your local area. To help with this, Microsoft provides access to free workshops online.

In addition to being fun, this camp can help children learn the fundamentals of valuable skills like coding. This will help children enter middle school and high school and may eventually help them find jobs that require their growing technical expertise.

Youth Haven

There is a special sleepaway camp in Michigan and Arizona known as Youth Haven. Youth Haven provides scholarships to low-income families to attend the camp for free.

Youth Haven helps to teach and foster fun skills like swimming and archery. But at the heart of this camp are concepts such as friendship and teamwork. Because your child will complete most tasks alongside their fellow campers, they will form friendships that may last a lifetime.

The result is a child with more friends and has developed socialization skills around other children. This camp serves children ages 8-13 and will require one week to complete.

Home Depot Maker Classes

Some children are visual or auditory learners, which means they are usually good at sitting back and absorbing lessons based on what they see or hear. However, other children are hands-on learners who primarily learn a new skill by practicing it. And if that sounds like your own child, we recommend you explore the Maker classes offered by Home Depot each year.

Unlike most other camps, this particular camp requires that your child have a parent or other adult with them at all times. These programs usually have different sessions that start at times ranging from early in the morning to the early evening, generally taking place on one weekend per month. And each session focuses on one basic idea: helping your child build something extraordinary!

As part of the camp, your kid will get a free project kit to work on. They’ll also receive a Home Depot-style orange vest and, once they are done, a special certificate for completing the camp.

Best of all, this camp focuses on hands-on, practical skills like building birdhouses. Your child will be able to use these skills quite a bit, especially when they get older. In addition, you’ll get the benefit of a child who now knows how to help out around the house with their newfound skills.

Budget Friendly Summer Programs for Kids

School is almost out for summer….

Wasn’t summer THE best when we were kids? It was for me! So much potential for new activities and outdoor fun!

Nowadays, as busy moms, summer can really throw us off our already-busy routine. We end up wracking our brains for activities to keep our kids learning, productive, and having fun—then we’re suddenly taking on the role of Camp Counselor and Activities Coordinator.

It’s fun, but it can be a bit MUCH!

Plus, summer program fees and expenses can definitely add up. Fast. Swimming lessons, baseball teams, day camps, arts programs—suddenly the entire summer budget is blown and the family hasn’t even made it on a road trip or vacation.

Fortunately, this common mom-dilemma is resolvable. It’s possible to find summer kids programs and activities that fit within your budget. Many camps and summer programs offer sliding scales, financial aid, and payment plans to help you stay within your budget and means this summer.

So never fear! Whether it’s summer camp, activities or lessons, your kids will have the best summer ever (and Mom might even sneak in some free time)!

1. Summer Camp: Day Camps and Sleep-away Camps

Summer camp is a ton of fun for kids and the great news is there are a number of discounts available, from early registration to multiple enrollments from one family to full-season discounts. Many summer camp programs offer scholarship options as well (although many applications need to be submitted in spring, so check well in advance)! Note that some churches offer overnight camp programs and wilderness experiences at deep discounts.

The American Camp Association website can help you search for nearly any type of camp anywhere in the country. Not only can you narrow down your search by type of camp, but you can also specify exactly how much you can afford, then narrow your options further.

Both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts cost about $25/year for membership, plus additional (but usually affordable) fees for activities. Use the Girl Scouts website to find a Girl Scout Camp near you. The Girl Scouts organization believes that scouting should be accessible to all girls, so there is financial assistance available to families who qualify. Be aware that financial aid opportunities are independently determined by local Girl Scout councils and fundraising options can vary from troop to troop. Similarly, you can find a Boy Scout troop near you by searching from the Boy Scouts website. Camps, programs, and activity fees vary by local council.

2. Recreation Center Summer Programs

Your local community recreation center, town hall, and fairgrounds may also offer great and very affordable summer opportunities. Many recreation centers feature swimming classes, baseball teams, soccer camps, and more. (Plus, they also offer adult classes for Mom and Dad.) Cheaper than a gym or private lessons, these programs are usually community-focused and priced so all can attend.

Programs through Boys and Girls Clubs and your local YMCA and YWCA are often open to all with options to adjust fees based on income levels. These local recreation offerings are usually quite financially reasonable, and they may also offer a sliding scale and scholarship options—so be sure to ask. You can search for local programs through each respective website.

3. Church Activities & Programs

If you belong to a church with a strong youth presence, ask your Youth Leader or Youth Director for ideas. Some churches offer free hands-on summer fun, music lessons, vacation Bible school camps, service projects, and other activities that might really spark kids’ interests and make for a more meaningful summer.

Churches also offer summer sports leagues (that compete against other church teams) and they’re often cheaper than other organized kids’ sports leagues and teams. Church bulletin boards also typically include listings for in-home lessons, playgroups, and other affordable opportunities. Many scout troops also work through churches, too.

4. Learning Opportunities, Activities & Hotspots

Art museums, children’s museums, and science and discovery museums typically offer a myriad of children’s activities during the summer. While they often cater to camp programs visiting with large groups, they also offer small group classes at a discount as well.

If your kiddo has a favorite museum—the planetarium, aquarium, or botanical garden—see what they offer. Don’t miss local “free days” often available to residents. Don’t forget to check other places like local farms, horse ranches, and skate parks that might offer summer options, too. The library almost always offers wonderful free summer programs, reading groups, crafts, and storytelling events that all kids enjoy!

Additionally, schools offer a lot more than just academic programs and summer school. Teachers often host reading groups and summer challenges for kids who want to keep learning over the summer (a great way to keep kids at grade-level and avoid the “summer slide”). These summer programs are meant to be fun (after all, who wants to be in school all summer?)—so your kids won’t even know they’re learning while they play!

School sports programs sometimes run during the summer and some schools even have affiliated camps and extension activities that are hands-on and really fun. Many are included with tuition or financial aid is available, especially for kids who need an academic boost.

5. Local Daytrips & Activities for Kids

Of course, kids’ summer activities and opportunities vary by location. To find activities in your area, ask members of your local Nextdoor group or local Facebook group for ideas for affordable local kids’ summer programs.

It sounds funny, but ordering a free guidebook from your local Visitors’ Bureau can be an awesome resource! I was totally shocked at all the great stuff in mine. It was packed with excellent local ideas I’d never even thought of—right in town! In larger cities, look for your Visitors’ Bureau, but you may have to order your state’s guide if you live in a smaller town. Pick up the local paper and any free papers offered around town as well. There might be a wonderful surprise right around the corner!

Almost all zoos offer some type of summer program for kids, though it depends upon your local zoo. If you’re looking for free activities, some zoos offer free admission all year round and many offer free days for county residents on certain days of the year or month. Check with your local zoo.

Try local farms or local garden centers, as some offer day camps and opportunities to learn about plants and animals up close. Local farm camps are devoted to teaching kids about vegetable picking, organic farming, and more. Garden centers can be another great place to look, often offering tips on planting and discounted summer activities for kids. (Plus, just walking through—for free—over an afternoon can be a great way for kids to connect with nature.)

Check in with local pottery studios, paint-and-take spots, craft and paper stores, and theaters around town, which often offer affordable summer opportunities for kids. Also try your local skating rink and public swimming pool, as there are often special summer deals on lessons and activities to check out during the week. Many also offer package deals for frequent trips.

6. Seasonal Event Volunteering Opportunities

If your town hosts music in the park or fairs and festivals, they’re great opportunities to get older kids involved helping and volunteering. It’s almost always a free and it hardly seems like work! Check out 4H at school or ask about local community involvement and volunteering opportunities, like outdoor painting, flower arranging contests, and dance and music lessons.

Some towns hold all sorts of fairs and festivals—and kids are usually the focus, which means they’re free or very affordable, whether your child is volunteering or not. However, always ask if there are opportunities for kids to help leading up to the event, as well as ways to get involved during the festival as well. Your kids might decorate a float, play an instrument, or help out setting up different aspects of the festival!

7. Private Lessons & Groups

While perhaps not as social as camp or recreation clubs (and typically more expensive) private lessons and even group lessons are widely available for kids over the summer. If your child has their heart set on private lessons, gather a group of parents to see if you can get a group discount rate and alleviate some of the costs. Again, check local neighborhood groups and local library bulletin boards for listings.

Some kids are more comfortable with one-on-one lessons for things like swimming, archery, or skating. If your kid takes lessons or plays sports during the school year, summer classes are great for keeping up skills and getting ready for next season. Ask the coach or instructor what they offer during the summer months and if they’re willing to work with you on the price to keep up your child’s interest over the break (many are happy to continue work with good students, often at a discount).

If you and several other parents are looking for affordable options together, consider a rotating play/activity group or a babysitting co-op—each mom takes a day per week to play Activity Director. One mom might offer in-home computer classes while another might teach kids how to play badminton or bocce ball. Pool your resources and your skill sets and you’ve already created private lessons as well as a mini summer camp!

Summertime is great for programs, activities, and fun for every kid. It doesn’t have to be stressful or a financial burden—moms need a summer break, too! Keep your kiddos engaged and active on the cheap to ensure your family has a happy, memorable, and wonderful summer of saving!

15 Affordable Summer Camps for Kids

A kid’s childhood experience will never be complete without memories of attending summer camp. Unfortunately, the costs associated with kids going to summer camp – especially for programs which last for a good number of weeks – are continually on the rise. Are there ways for parents to send their kids to summer camp without busting their budget? Definitely! Find out which camps in the US are considered to be the most affordable, and which types of summer camps are available for kids.

Types of Summer Camps Available for Kids

First, let’s have a general definition of summer camp. Traditionally, summer camps are supervised programs which are designed for kids and teenagers. As the name implies, they are held during the summer months and the kids who participate are known as campers. When you think of summer camp, the first thing that probably comes to mind is a place in the words where kids can go hiking, canoeing, sing around campfires, and perform a slew of similar activities.

The good news is that over the years, the variety of programs has become a lot wider. If you have a daughter who is not the outdoorsy type, she can still enjoy her summer learning about new things and interacting with kids who are almost the same age.

According to the American Camp Association, 75% of traditional summer camps have added new programs to adapt to an ever-changing spectrum of family and to cater to the varying interests of kids. No matter which among these programs you end up enrolling your kid in, he or she is bound to have fond memories of summer camp while growing up.

At its core, the goal of summer camp is to enhance the educational and cultural development of children, something that you are bound to be happy about as a parent. To give you an idea about the different types of programs available for kids, take a look at the following list:

Art Camp

For children who love to draw, art camp is the best substitute for a traditional summer camp. The activities will help boost your child’s creativity and it’s a great venue to meet new friends.

Cooking Camp

Is your kid dreaming of becoming a world-class chef someday? Enrol him or her in a cooking camp. The facilitators will teach kids the basic cooking techniques, and the bonus is that you will have a mini-sous chef at home.

Day Camp

Parents who do not have the budget for a full summer camp or even an overnight summer camp program for their kids can go for a day camp option. It includes the same types of activities that traditional camps offer and your kids will still have plenty of fun.

Dance Camp

If your kid knows how to groove or just simply likes to move a lot, go look for a dance camp. This gives kids an opportunity to learn new routines, enhance their balancing skills and even develop athletic activities. It also helps them develop their self-confidence.

Gymnastics Camp

To keep your kid from staring at a glowing screen all summer long, enroll him or her in gymnastics camp. Not only will they have lots of fun, but they can also get some much-needed physical exercise and foster friendship with other kids.

Museum Camp

A museum camp allows kids to expand their academic interests in a more relaxed, camp-themed environment. While gaining new knowledge, they can also interact with kids of the same age.

School Camp

Instead of using the outdoors as a setting, most schools will offer their grounds as a venue for summer day camp activities. For parents, do your research and ask if any kids in the neighbourhood will be attending the summer camp at the local school in your area. The activities range from sports to arts, crafts to games, computer skills development to music, and more.

Summer Enrichment Camp

Get in touch with a recreational facility near where you live if they are holding summer enrichment camps. Other venues include community colleges and local schools.

Zoo Camp

For kids who love animals, a zoo camp is an excellent venue to learn more about these furry little creatures. A similar program is the Human Society camp, which offers affordable summer camp programs for children who would like to learn how to care for different pets.

Reviews of the camps in the Leningrad region

12 colleges. Psychological camp

Leningrad region, DOL “Scarlet sails”

5 reviews

For me personally, the most revealing characteristic of the “12 Colleges” was an irresistible craving to return there again and again. I experienced this unique feeling of longing for the camp only here, despite the fact that in my life I visited many children’s camps.
First of all, the uniqueness of the 12 colleges in the family atmosphere prevailing in the camp. I can’t remember a single case of a “teacher-student” relationship, when psychologists ordered a child to do something. The entire camp system is built on trust and respect for each other. This liberates both children and counselors / psychologists.
The second, but not least, reason for the uniqueness of the 12 boards is certainly the training process itself. Remembering myself, it was 12 colleges that helped me form as a person in the most difficult period of my life – adolescence. The attention that psychologists paid to me multiplied all the good that was in me then.
Thank you very much to the 12 colleges for the work they are doing. I sincerely recommend this amazing place to all parents and children.

Good afternoon! Camp “Krugosvetka” – our first experience of camp life and it turned out to be successful! Both my son and I were worried about how everything would go, but in vain – everything was fine)) Many thanks to the leaders of the 2nd detachment, Daria and Vadim. I would especially like to mention Daria – both my son and I are delighted with her! Always friendly, positive, friendly, obligatory …. in general, really COOL! Well done!
I liked the living conditions, food, the program itself – the children were busy, the parents’ day was well organized … Everything was worthy and at a high level. Next year we plan to visit you again!!!

So the 3rd shift is over, thanks for a great vacation. The boys from FC “Olimp” are full of impressions: training, relay races, tournaments, competitions, discos, everything was great! I was especially inspired by shooting from a pistol and a machine gun, throwing knives, a military relay race – the boys, after all. I really hope that the team will come here again and again. Great food, all the guys said it was delicious. Special thanks to counselor Galina for her patience. From the wishes: it is worth updating the flooring boards on the territory and the stairs, it is also the seats, around the football field. On the steps from the entrance side, one is missing, the rest do not look strong, it was scary to sit. In general, the impressions from the camp are the most positive, both children and parents are satisfied. Thank you, see you soon!

Many thanks for the camp from me and Dani Belov. The child goes to camps not for the first year, but for the first time such success. Usually, having arrived from the camp, the whole story ends with the phrase of the child, but that everything was fine. After arriving from the Bear, for the third day, I listen to stories about the camp non-stop, the child’s eyes are burning, emotions are over the edge! Yesterday she joked that on Monday she would go to the forest again to Medved, so he had already run to collect his backpack. Asks to sign up for next summer for 2 shifts. Many thanks to Leonid and all the organizers.

Many thanks to the whole team of the City of Masters Base in Losevo 2nd summer shift!!! Special thanks to the leader of the group “Pioneers” Voronina Dasha from Alexander Shcherbakov for sensitivity, understanding and love for children!!! The child is in the camp for the first time, the first time he rests without his parents, he has just returned, but he already wants to come for the autumn holidays, next summer. The camp is well equipped – camping equipment, inventory, a clean and civilized toilet right in front of the entrance to the forest, sinks in the forest and even sockets at the gazebo, coolers on the floors in the dormitory, washing machines, good showers, clothes dryer. We were a little unlucky with the weather, our group did not spend the night camping in tents, did not launch drones, but there were many outdoor games, forays into the forest, trips to the pool, rafting, guitar songs, rock climbing, archery, many creative competitions . The son became more independent and collected, gained valuable experience in everyday life, met wonderful guys. Children did not sit in gadgets, they were constantly busy. Thanks for the great photos, every evening I saw my child happy in the photo, I didn’t worry about his stay at the camp. The son looks at the photos, talks excitedly about the events and new friends.

How to choose a camp for a child: summer holidays for children

There are different types of camps. But each must be chosen not only in terms of usefulness, but also safety.

Summer camp is an unusual adventure for children and a lifesaver for parents who cannot take a vacation for the entire summer vacation. But the choice is now so great that it does not take long to get confused. And periodically appearing reports of incidents during a vacation in a summer camp do not add calmness. How to choose a place so that the child has a good rest and does not get any injuries? Let’s talk about the basic principles. Choosing a camp for a child is safe!

What are the camps

Summer camp today is not just a place where a child comes to relax, swim and engage in outdoor sports. There are several thematic areas that determine the profile of recreation organization. Therefore, choosing a summer camp can be a real quest. Here are the main directions:

  • Sanatorium type camps. They offer recreation aimed at recuperation after the school year. This is a type close to the usual – children spend time in nature, swim, play outdoor games, receive spa treatment that will not solve serious health problems (this is important to understand, if there are problems, it is better to choose a specialized institution), but they will strengthen immunity and nervous system.
  • Sports camps. They will help not only to strengthen the physical form, but also to achieve progress in the chosen sport. This type of camp must be chosen very carefully, based on the needs and plans of the child. If a student has a focus on achieving a certain result, the camp must correspond to this level. And if there are no significant claims, you need an institution that will not discourage all the desire to play sports due to excessive workload.
  • Educational camps. For those who do not want to interrupt their favorite subject or direction even during the holidays. Language, biological, physical, mathematical – camps are now available for any interest. For a child, this is an additional opportunity to change the situation, try a new program, meet like-minded people, and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the scientific community. But, of course, you need to study the program in advance and understand how it suits you and your child.
  • Thematic (including professional) camps. Offer programs aimed at acquiring knowledge and skills in a particular area, while not falling into one of the above categories. For example, “professional” camps, which introduce children to the peculiarities of a particular profession, provide an opportunity to try their hand and understand whether they really want to do this.

What you need to pay attention to when choosing a camp

Having decided on the type, pay special attention to the choice of a specific camp. The choice of a camp for children should not be based on one entertainment. It is important not only to give the child interesting leisure time, rest and physical strengthening, but also to take care of safety.

First of all, make sure that your preferred camp is included in the official register of children’s recreation and recreation organizations. The register is a database of children’s recreation organizations, it includes data on all camps that participate in an officially organized children’s health campaign, their work is checked by regulatory authorities, they are required to comply with all requirements imposed by law. There is such a registry for each region, find the one in which the camp of your choice is located and make sure that it is included there.

A summer camp may have a website that you would like to explore first. Pay attention to the infrastructure – what buildings are used, how they are located, how well furnished, whether there is new furniture, equipment. Also, the site usually publishes programs for which children will be involved, they should also be available to parents.

Another important aspect is transfer. Learn what options the organizers offer to deliver children to the camp. Keep in mind that when transporting children and adolescents, the Rules for the organized transportation of a group of children by buses, approved by the Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation of September 23, must be observed..2020 No. 1527, and clause 3.4. Sanitary and epidemiological rules SP 3.1/2.4.3598-20.

What you need to buy a ticket and when is the best time to buy

If you choose one of the official camps, check if it is eligible for the cashback program. LINK

Parents can return up to 50% of the cost of a child’s vacation at a summer camp. To do this, you must meet certain conditions: select a camp on the site mirtravel.rf, pay for a ticket in a certain period (until August 31) using the Mir card. In this case, part of the amount will be returned to the card – this is how the support program for families with children works, thereby ensuring affordable recreation for all schoolchildren.

Read more about the cashback program in our article.

Is it possible to control the safety of a child in the camp

Naturally, all parents are concerned about safety. Theoretically, a lot of dangers await the child in the camp – from poisoning to injury while swimming or outdoor games. But the safety of the child in the summer camp must be guaranteed and ensured by the staff.

Therefore, it is important to check at the selection stage that the camp complies with all legal requirements. Here is a list of documents that contain requirements for summer camps:

  • Federal Law of July 24, 1998 No. 124-FZ “On Basic Guarantees of the Rights of the Child in the Russian Federation”,
  • Federal Law of November 24, 1996 No. 132-FZ “On the Fundamentals of Tourism in the Russian Federation”,
  • Federal Law of March 30, 1999 No. 52-FZ “On the sanitary and epidemiological welfare of the population”;
  • Sanitary rules SP 2.4.3648-20 “Sanitary and epidemiological requirements for organizations of education and training, recreation and health improvement of children and youth”;
  • National standard GOST R 52887-2018 “Services for children in recreation and recreation organizations”.

The camp you have chosen must have all permits and confirmations, you can request them and study them.

It should not be a secret and the conditions in which children will live. It’s good if the site contains photos of residential buildings, a dining room, game rooms, and so on. If you wish, you should be able to come and see how things are in reality with the material fund (if the camp is not very far from your place of residence and this is an acceptable measure for you, of course). The personnel must be qualified, and there must be supporting documents and diplomas for this. Of course, everyone who works with children should have up-to-date medical books.

So which camp to choose for a child? This will tell you a combination of factors. Most importantly: do not be afraid to ask questions and demand confirmation of the high level of organization of children’s recreation. And already sending the child to the summer camp, be sure to regularly ask him how the daily schedule is organized, whether everything suits him. If a child complains about something or avoids answers, this is a good reason to pay close attention to the organization of recreation, up to a personal visit. Any problem is easier to prevent than to solve. By the way, you can use the experience of other parents – study the reviews, ask your friends which camps they chose and whether they were satisfied. A properly organized summer vacation can become an unforgettable experience for a child, and the task of parents is to make sure that it will still be useful and safe.

Summer camp in the USA for children with learning English

A trip to a summer camp in the USA is an exciting and unforgettable trip for a child. This is a great opportunity to visit the most interesting places on the planet, plunge into the language environment and “bring up” your knowledge of English. Parents do not have to be afraid of a huge distance in eleven time zones – many Russian schoolchildren and students come here every year to study English and get new impressions.

For children, a vacation in America is an opportunity to unleash the language and creativity of the child, strengthen communication and leadership skills, learn independence and, of course, fulfill their cherished dream. Summer language camps in the USA open their doors for Russian and foreign children with the onset of the holidays.

English camps in America differ in geographical location, infrastructure, unique program and, of course, another distinguishing feature is the cost. The educational agency “StudyThere” directly cooperates with the directors and owners of children’s camps in America, with whom we have many years of experience. Having full and reliable information about each camp for teenagers and children of primary school age, we will select a program that meets the needs of the child and the requirements of the parents. For the convenience of customers who send their children to the United States for the summer, we indicate the final prices for the tour, except for air tickets, in US currency. To find out the cost in rubles, one has only to multiply the indicated figures by the current dollar exchange rate set by the Central Bank of Russia.

Despite the different specifics and geography of language camps, each institution has a curriculum. An average of 20 hours are allocated for learning English per week. Children are taught under the guidance of experienced teachers in small groups, formed according to age and language proficiency. In the learning process, teachers carefully monitor the progress of each student, and in which case, make changes to the program. By attending a summer camp, children have the opportunity to communicate a lot with each other and quickly adapt to the English-speaking environment.

For better language acquisition in each age group, English is taught according to a special methodology. For younger children, classes are held in a playful way, for older students – in an academic form. It should be noted that in all cases, significant attention is paid to grammar, vocabulary and the correct construction of sentences. After the lessons of learning English are completed, the children begin to put into practice the acquired knowledge through visiting and participating in various activities.

In addition to the educational process, the program of each camp includes role-playing games, quizzes, sports, meeting interesting people and excursions to places of interest (for example, California – Los Angeles and Hollywood). There are specialized programs aimed at developing creativity and sports skills, for example, “Take a photo” or “Adventure Camp”, which is conducted by FLS International. Without a doubt, by sending your child on vacation here, you are making a profitable investment in his successful future.

Prices for children’s “English-speaking” holidays are relatively inexpensive and quite affordable for people with an average income. The price of the vouchers includes:
• meals;
• accommodation;
• teacher services;
• excursion trips to cities, to the coast and places of interest;
• round trip airfare, medical insurance and visa fee.

Student accommodation is organized in campuses or boarding houses with comfortable rooms designed for one, two and three people. Each camp provides a full three meals a day. In all schools, when compiling the menu, the peculiarities of diets and vegetarianism are taken into account. It is also possible to stay with host families. It should be noted that the Americans are hospitable and always happy to host a young guest from Russia for a while.

Summer vacation abroad is a unique and effective training for a child’s personal growth, laying a solid foundation for a future successful career. After returning from a long journey, the guys really grow up – they become more independent, courageous, self-sufficient and able to work in a team.

The experience of our specialists will allow you to make the right choice and find the most suitable camps in America for teenagers, both in terms of the program offered and in terms of price. For those who wish to purchase a ticket relatively inexpensively, we will provide a selection of the most optimal options, where the price in rubles will be indicated for your convenience.

StudyThere can help you organize a summer vacation trip to an English language study abroad camp:

• choose a school or camp for schoolchildren, taking into account the specifics, geographical location and financial preferences;
• choose the ideal program, designed both for in-depth study of English and for the development of creative and physical abilities;
• find a suitable accommodation option: in a residence or American families;
• apply for a visa using a multi-stage procedure for preparing and checking documents, which allows you to avoid mistakes and refusals to issue a permit to enter a foreign country.

Going on a trip to an American camp, you can count on round-the-clock support from our managers. Regardless of the time of day, the issue will be resolved without fail.
