Staten Island’s 12 Unique Places

Staten Island is undeservedly considered by many New Yorkers to be the “forgotten area”. Meanwhile, it can offer its guests a lot of unique attractions. Simply board the free Staten Island Ferry to discover miles of shoreline and 12,300 acres of parkland in the city’s greenest and least populated area. Want something more than just beaches and parks? Then head to the places from our list.

Located on the north shore of Staten Island, steps from the ferry, the 83-acre park includes 23 historic buildings, nine botanical gardens, and 10 acres of wetland. With its Greek Revival, Beaux-Arts, Italianate and Victorian style buildings, the center is considered the borough’s “crown jewel”.

Snug Harbor Cultural Center first opened in 1833 for sailors who could live there after their maritime careers ended. By the end of 19century, more than 1,000 retired sailors lived here. Some of the historic buildings were destroyed in the 20th century, but the City Landmarks Commission rescued the rest by designating them as listed buildings in 1965.

Officially opened in 1976, the cultural center merged with the Staten Island Botanical Garden in 2008. The Smithsonian affiliate includes the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, the Noble Maritime Collection, the Staten Island Children’s Museum, the Art Lab School of Art, and the Staten Island Museum. Most of the attractions in the cultural center are free or accept donations as an entrance fee.

The Staten Island Zoo, which first opened in 1936, is one of the few zoos in the country with an educational mission. In addition, the zoo is famous for its serpentarium, which has an extensive collection of 22 different species of rattlesnakes. There is also an aquarium with sharks and moray eels and a tropical forest with bats and spider monkeys.

While this 80-acre zoo can’t compete with the huge Bronx Zoo, it’s much more affordable. Admission is $10 for adults, $6 for children aged 3 to 14, and $7 for seniors over 60. The zoo is located at 614 Broadway in West Brighton.

Did you know that one of the largest collections of Himalayan artifacts is located on Staten Island? At the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art, located on Lighthouse Hill in the Aigberville area, museum visitors get to know the art and culture of Tibet. Founded in 1945 by Jacques Marchais, a Tibetan art collector, the building resembles a Tibetan mountain monastery and was the first Himalayan-style house built in the United States. It has a fish pond and meditation chambers.

Visitors can view Tibetan and Himalayan ritual sites, quiet meditation gardens, tai chi and meditation classes, and various special programs such as musical performances, lectures and crafts. The museum is open only from Wednesday to Sunday from 1 pm to 5 pm, so plan your trip there in advance. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for students and seniors.

Step back to the 17th century in Historic Richmond Town, a 100-acre living historic village of over 30 historic buildings on four different lots. Historic Richmond Town served as the center of government activity on Staten Island for nearly 200 years. After the area became part of New York in 1898, politicians moved their offices to the north, located closer to Manhattan. Preserving the vacant buildings, the Staten Island Historical Society turned the complex into a museum and opened it to the public in 1935.

To fully experience what life was like on Staten Island hundreds of years ago, guides lead tours of fully furnished and restored homes and shops. The city hosts various special events throughout the year such as pumpkin picking, candlelight tours and more. Regular admission is $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and students, and $5 for children ages 4-11. Check the calendar of events taking place in Richmond here.

Most of us have family recipes that we fondly associate with our grandmothers. At the Staten Island restaurant, Enoteca Maria, you can sample homemade favorites from a variety of grandmothers. The kitchen at Enoteca Maria is stocked with “nonnas” (grandmothers in Italian) from all over the world. After owner Jody Scaravella lost his mother in the early 2000s, he opened a restaurant with a kitchen run by Italian grandmothers to recreate the culinary culture he grew up with. In 2016, Scaravella began to invite grandmothers from different countries to his restaurant.

Today Enoteca Maria employs chefs from Italy, Japan, Syria, France, Bangladesh, Venezuela, Poland, Greece, Turkey, Liberia, Kazakhstan, Dominican Republic, Czech Republic, Belarus, Pakistan and other countries. At any given time, two nonnas supervise the work in the kitchen, one is the chef, the other is the sous chef. Nonna of the day, along with its menu, can be found here. Plan your visit in advance. The restaurant at 27 Hyatt Street is open Wednesday through Sunday from 3pm. Please note that they only accept cash.

St. George’s Theater has a long history. St. The George Theater was first opened by Solomon Bril of the Island Theater Company in 1929. It quickly became one of the most respected theaters in the city for its performances, intricate architecture and interior design. Its architect, Nestor Castro, incorporated various Spanish and Italian baroque styles into the design, including stained glass chandeliers, spiral staircases and detailed mezzanine levels. Other unique details include murals, tiled fountains, and sculptures throughout.

After several owners tried to turn the theater into a nightclub, skating rink and more, the non-profit saved the historic theater in 2004. Now the theater hosts events and performances for local residents.

Head to Fort Wadsworth for this scenic, Instagram-worthy shot. The historic park, located on the west bank of the Narrows, has guarded the entrance to New York Harbor and Manhattan for over 200 years. Built in the late 17th century, the fort is considered to have the longest continuous military history in the United States and includes other smaller units such as Fort Tompkins and Fort Richmond. The fort is named after Brigadier General James Wadsworth, who was killed during Civil Waters.

Along with its rich history, Fort Wadsworth provides incredible panoramic views of the harbor and city. With 226 acres of land, visitors can picnic, bike along the trails, fish, or simply stroll along the boardwalk. NPS Rangers offer tours and activities, including hiking, lantern moonlight tours, and even concerts. Read more about the history of the fort here.

Opened in 2015, the National Lighthouse Museum was meant to address the lack of educational resources about Staten Island’s maritime history. It is just a three minute walk from St. George’s Ferry Terminal. The museum includes exhibits such as the Wall of Lights, an exhibition of over 160 miniature lighthouse models, various fog horns and horns, as well as lighting fixtures and optics. Private walking tours can be reserved two weeks in advance. The small but informative museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, costs $5 for adults and is free for children under 12.

Lemon Creek Park is located on the shores of Prince’s Bay. The park includes the Seguine Mansion, built in 1938 from oyster shells. In fact, discarded oyster shells still line the shores of this Staten Island site.

Migratory birds live here, the swamps of the park attract swans, mallards and black ducks, as well as monarch butterflies. For those interested in birdwatching, Lemon Creek Park is home to one of New York City’s few purple martin colonies. At Lemon Creek Pier, visitors can fish for flounder, striped bass, bluefish and more. The park is known as a paradise for nature lovers. It is home to one of the largest salt marshes in the area and is a nature reserve due to its great ecological value to New York City.

The façade of Staten Island’s Borough Hall features a beautiful French Renaissance design and tall clock tower. Designed by architects Carrere & Hastings between 1904 and 1906, the three-story brick house houses government offices. The marble lobby in the 100-year-old government building is decorated with Depression-era bas-reliefs and murals that show moments in Staten Island’s history. The frescoes were painted in 1940 by artist Frederick Charles Star.

After all this sightseeing, you’ll probably want a beer or two. Good news? Staten Island’s brewing roots go deep – beer has been brewed here since 1871. Flagship Brewery, whose advertising slogan is “unforgettable beer brewed in a forgotten neighborhood”, can be found in Tompkinsville. Flagship also organizes tours of the brewery for as little as $5 per person on Saturdays, including tastings.

Staten Island Beer Company, founded by an experimental basement homebrewer, is a family business in Mariners Harbor. A variety of beers are available here, such as summer ales and pale ales, with eleven beers on tap. Find a brewery near Mariners Harbor at 20 Kinsey Place and let their “beer cure whatever scares you.”

This museum has just opened and is the first Sri Lankan museum outside of Sri Lanka. It was founded by 18-year-old Julia Viyesinghe. The non-profit can be found in the basement of Lakruwana Restaurant, the first Sri Lankan restaurant in the United States. The exhibition features works of art, Buddha statues and many other culturally significant historical items. With the help of her father, who owns a restaurant, Julia began to pack, shipping from Sri Lanka to New York in a 20-foot container. Find the first museum of its kind at 668 Bay Street in Staten Island.
