Features of life in Spain

Ranking of the best cities
Spain certainly leads the ranking of the most beautiful countries in the world. To enjoy the beauty of its cities and the splendor of nature, more than 85 million tourists come here every year. But it is one thing to visit the country as a vacationer, and a completely different option is to come here for a long time, and maybe even forever.
Russians Spain attracts with great opportunities and European standard of living. The number of emigrants from Russia is increasing every year. Some find a safe haven in the Kingdom where they can enjoy life after retirement, while others find unlimited prospects for self-development and career growth. It will be useful for both of them to find out where it is better for Russians to live in Spain.
Features of life in Spain
Spain cannot be called a rich country. Yes, here the standard of living is significantly higher than in the Russian Federation, but there are other European countries with a lower unemployment index and a higher GDP per capita. However, the Russians tend to Spain. Attracts the Mediterranean climate, the kindness of the Spaniards, excellent service.
Perhaps this is not the point. In Spain, in all spheres of life there is a feeling of complete freedom and equality. Here, a respectful attitude towards the elderly is manifested, and there is no neglect of emigrants. Here people are not divided on the basis of “poor”, rich”.
In order to understand the peculiarity of life in Spain, one should be imbued with a local saying: “Life is given to a person for pleasure!”
Spaniards live for today, appreciating the beauty of every moment. Russian settlers are initially surprised by the endlessly smiling people on the streets. The Spaniards try to fill every day with pleasant moments – good food, positive emotions, communication with nice people.
In addition to the emotional component for Russians, life in the Kingdom provides the following benefits:
- Higher education at prestigious universities.
Starting from 2014, the process of entering universities for students from Russia has been simplified – the certificate with the Unified State Examination is equal to the exams that Spaniards take at the third stage of secondary education.
- Free movement in 187 countries of the world, including the European Union and the Schengen area without registration of entry documents. This privilege is available even to holders of a residence permit.
- High purchasing power index. Low prices, in comparison with other European countries for food, clothing, real estate.
- Accessible medicine.

Residence permit
stay in the country for a long time. It is issued for a period of 1 year with the possibility of a further extension for 2 years. Subject to the migration conditions, a residence permit can be extended many times. To receive it, there must be grounds:
- Investment in the country’s economy.
- Purchase of a property.
- Employment based on an invitation from a Spanish employer.
- University enrollment.
- Marriage with a Spanish citizen and other grounds.
A residence permit can be issued with the right to employment and without providing such an opportunity. If the basis for moving is a “golden visa”, then its holder receives almost the same rights as Spanish citizens, with the exception of the right to take part in elections.

permanent residence
The second step to citizenship is obtaining permanent residence. Issued for 5 or 10 years. Gives the right to conduct business and employment. The main condition for obtaining it is legal residence in the country for a specified period (5-6 years).
Citizenship
Spanish passport is proof of citizenship. According to the standard procedure for obtaining Spanish citizenship, it can be issued after 10 years of legal residence in the country. By law, before obtaining a passport of the Kingdom, Russians must renounce their citizenship of the Russian Federation.
Main characteristics
When choosing a city to move to, it is better to immediately discard national preferences. Of course, it’s good when a lot of people of your nationality live nearby, but it’s better if the city is suitable for the convenience of living, cost of living, infrastructure and other important indicators. You can look at the information on the forums and choose a suitable place, guided by the following selection criteria:
- Climate.
The north and south of the country are different. The north is under the influence of the Atlantic. It’s not hot here, but it’s not cold either. On the southern islands of Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca, it is very hot in summer – up to +40 degrees.
- Assessing employment opportunities. The cities with the lowest unemployment rate are Aramaion (Basque Country), Bujarados, Viladrão and Sant Just Desvern (Catalonia).
- Assessing the level of wages – Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia.
- The cost of living. Here it is important to analyze how much it will cost to buy or rent a home, food prices, utilities. The cheapest cities in Spain are Lloret de Mar (also Lloret de Mar), Calella, Tossa de Mar. The most expensive are Ibiza, Puerto de la Cruz and San Sebastian.
- Developed infrastructure. Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga and Valencia are ideal for this criterion.
As additional criteria, you can set the presence of green spaces, proximity to the sea, clean air and others.
The cost of housing
The cost of buying or renting housing is the most significant item of expenditure. Here is the cost per square meter in some cities in Spain. Over time, prices may change, but the general trend remains:
City | Cost of 1 sq. m. in euro |
---|---|
San Sebastian | Center 5700 |
Madrid | Center 4650 |
Barcelona | From 3000 (4700 in the center) |
Valladolid | Center 3 700 |
Costa del Garraf | From 2 800 |
A Coruña | Center 2 800 |
Costa del Sol | From 2 700 |
Santiago de Compostel | From 2 700 |
City of Vigo | From 2 500 |
Malaga | From 2 400 |
Costa Dorada | From 2 000 |
Costa Blanca | From 2 000 |
Santa Cruz de Tenerife | From 1 950 |

Almeria | 1800 in the center |
Costa del Maresme | From 1 7000 |
Murcia | From 900 |
Alguasace | From 500 |
Alicante | From 400 |
According to Numbeo’s analysis, the cities of Santander and Santiago de Compostela have the highest standard of living.

Infrastructure
We can say that throughout Spain there is an excellent infrastructure. In small villages, which can be considered the soul of the country, it is no less comfortable than in a big city. In this case, the city is usually located at a distance of a 10-minute drive from the village.
In Spain, everything is done to ensure that citizens live comfortably. Near the houses there are kindergartens, swimming pools, sports clubs, schools, clinics and other facilities. Convenient pedestrian paths and routes for cyclists are being created. As for the transport infrastructure, there are more than 100 airports in Spain alone!
If you choose the best city in terms of infrastructure development, it will undoubtedly be Madrid, Valencia, Bilbao or Barcelona.
Attractive regions
Each person has an individual understanding of the most attractive region in Spain. Someone wants a quiet and comfortable life. In this regard, Rioja is suitable, among other places it stands out for its safety, measured course of life and the beauty of architecture. Madrid or Barcelona are suitable for active enterprising people, especially since these cities in Spain are considered traditionally Russian.
Those who want to enjoy the sea every day should choose one of the resort towns – Costa Brava, with its mesmerizing landscapes, San Sebastian in the Basque Land or the Costa Tropical. But buying real estate in these cities may only be affordable for very wealthy Russian emigrants.
Let’s consider in more detail where and for what reasons it is better to stay for permanent residence.
Beginning businessmen
Entrepreneurs consider the place of residence in terms of convenient geographical location, infrastructure development, proximity to sales markets, and so on. From this position, the most attractive are large cities, industrial and regional centers:
- Madrid is the capital of Spain, the most populous and expensive city.
At the same time, Madrid is the most convenient option for doing business. It is the financial center of the country, the offices of the largest international corporations are located here.
- Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia. The city attracts foreign investors with its communication accessibility. Here is the largest port of Spain, established rail and road links, there is an international airport. Doing business and living in Barcelona attracts with a wide variety of activities, especially in the field of IT-technologies and the promotion of innovative projects.
- Bilbao is a city in the north of the country. Bilbao is not seen as a single city to live in, but as a collection of suburbs that cover almost half of the Basque Country. The industry of new technologies is successfully developing here. Tourism brings millions of income to the city. There is a developed infrastructure for doing business, international exhibitions are often held. It is comfortable to live and work in the city.
Starting entrepreneurs should consider Valencia, Malaga, Murcia or Zaragoza as a comfortable city for doing business and living.

For young couples, families without children
In order to choose the best city for a young family, it is necessary, first of all, to start from the goals of the move. If this is education, then the places where the best universities in the country are located are suitable:
- Barcelona. Here are the university, the autonomous university, the Pompeu Fabra university.
- Catalonia. Here is the Polytechnic University.
- Madrid.
There are many private and public educational institutions in the city: Autonomous University of Madrid, Complutense University, Carlos III University and others.
- Valencia – Polytechnic University and University of Valencia.
In terms of accessibility, the following cities are suitable:
- Ceuta is one of the cheapest cities. Here, food prices are 30% lower than in the country.
- Teruel is the easiest city to find a job with the lowest unemployment rate.
- Palencia is the city that offers the most affordable real estate. Housing prices are 30-35% lower than in other places in Spain.
- Cáceres is the most affordable rental property.
- Zamora has the lowest cost of living.
Families with children
Spain is an ideal place for families with children. Clean air, gentle sea and government programs that ensure a happy and healthier childhood attract emigrants from Russia here. The important thing is that there are completely free public schools that provide high-level education, and private prestigious schools. A child is accepted into the nursery group of the kindergarten from the age of 2 months. Contribution to the state kindergarten does not exceed 70 euros per month.
The best place to live in Spain with children is the coastal town of Torrevieja. What attracts here:
- Reasonable prices for renting a house (from 190 € per week) and buying real estate (from 80 thousand € per apartment).
- Clean beaches, plenty of playgrounds.
- Large park area. The Park of Nations, it is home to a variety of birds – parrots, geese, ducks and others.
- Abundance of options for schools – from prestigious private to public.
- A variety of children’s sections.
- Proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, two salt lakes, La Mata Lagoon Natural Park National Reserve.
- Clean, healthy air.
In addition, it can be noted that this is a multinational city, where the Russian diaspora is well represented. When you move here, it will be easier to adapt. In addition to Torrevieja, you can look at Santa Cruz de Tenerife (but it’s not easy to find affordable housing here) or Playa de Aro, which is considered the calmest city in Italy.
Pensioners
Spain is a popular destination for seniors from the US and Western Europe to move to permanent residence. Interest in Spanish real estate has increased on the part of financially secure pensioners from Russia. The Kingdom does not apply migration programs for the elderly, but it is easier to get a residence permit.
The attractiveness of Spain also lies in the fact that, according to WHO, the Kingdom of Spain has entered the TOP-5 countries with a high life expectancy. For women – 85.5 years, for men – 82.8 years. This is due to effective medical care, excellent ecology and quality food.
Upon reaching retirement age (women and men over 67), Russians can apply for pension payments in the Kingdom. Such an agreement between the Russian Federation and Spain has existed since 1996.
If we analyze the statistics of real estate purchases by pensioners from Russia over the past 5 years, the best cities to live in are:
- Region of Murcia. Attracts a calm measured life. A house in the countryside can be bought for 160-180 thousand euros. Price for 1 sq. m. of housing in Murcia – from 900 euros. In Alguasas – almost 2 times lower – from 500 euros.
- Alicante is the friendliest resort. A picturesque and elegant town on the Mediterranean coast. Here you can buy inexpensive housing in close proximity to the sea. In the secondary market, the price of 1 sq. m. varies from 400 to 500 euros. New buildings are 2 times more expensive. Pensioners here make a decent income by renting out their own property during the beach season.
- Torrevieja is a city that is part of Alicante, a popular tourist center of the Costa Blanca. The Russian diaspora is well represented here. About 100 thousand people live in the city. Nearby are two unique salt lakes Salinas de Torrevieja and Salinas de La Mata. A small house in the suburbs can be bought for 120 thousand euros or more, a cozy apartment – for 80 thousand euros.
Good living conditions and reasonable housing prices can be found in the provinces of Avila, Toledo and Ciudé Real.
Ranking of the best cities
It is difficult to rank the best cities, as each expat has personal preferences. Therefore, the rating should be based on criteria that can be expressed in coefficients. This is the state of the economy, infrastructure, the availability of buying and renting housing, climatic conditions. The personal safety of citizens, the presence of cultural institutions, the level of medicine are important. Based on these combined evaluation criteria, the list of the best cities would look like this:
Location | City | Quality of life coefficient, in points | Number of inhabitants, thousand |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Santander | 208.61 | 172 |
2 | Santiago de Compostel | 202.00 | 95 |
3 | San Sebastian | 201.68 | 187 |
4 | Zaragoza | 200.88 | 660 |
5 | City of Vigo | 193.90 | 299 |
6 | Almeria | 193.58 | 190 |
7 | A Coruña | 193. |

8 | Valladolid | 191.38 | 315 |
9 | Malaga | 192.92 | 569 |
10 | Santa Cruz de Tenerife | 189.13 | 220 |
Madrid, Spain’s capital, has a Numbeo score of 147.73. Slightly less in Barcelona – 139.18.

how many Russians are in Barcelona and where are the most of them – Barcelona Realty Group
How many Russians live in Spain
Russian immigrants and about 107,000 Ukrainians, followed by Moldovans (19,000) and Belarusians (6,000). The number of people who have moved from other CIS countries is increasing every year, but so far there are much fewer of them. Of course, we are talking only about residents, the number of illegal immigrants cannot be taken into account by statistics, although some sources give figures twice as high as official ones. In addition, the Spaniards rank several thousand “children of war” as “Russians”, that is, the descendants of those who fled in the 30s. XX century from the dictatorship of Franco in the USSR, and then returned to his homeland.
Russian-speaking diaspora in Spain
Despite the impressive presence of representatives of the post-Soviet space in the country, some experts tend to talk about the absence of a diaspora community as such. As a rule, we are talking about rather disparate groups of Russians, Ukrainians, etc., united by a linguistic feature, which, for various reasons, practically do not maintain close relations.
At the same time, the function of a “link” within each ethnic group is performed by cultural associations: they are engaged in the popularization of the language, hold festivals and holidays, training courses and excursions. Most organize magnificent celebrations of Victory Day, Maslenitsa, Easter, New Year, etc., which become a traditional meeting place for compatriots. Another kind of bridge connecting those who left with their homeland are Orthodox churches and parishes opened in many cities, in particular, in Madrid, Barcelona, Altea, Torrevieja and Estepona. The information “vacuum” is being filled by local Russian-language media: radio broadcasts in a number of provinces, publications of the Moskovsky Komsomolets and Komsomolskaya Pravda newspapers and several magazines are published.
If you are wondering how to find compatriots in Spain, we also recommend looking for Russian shops, these original epicenters of diaspora life, which, in addition to selling the treasured buckwheat and stew, simultaneously function as cultural associations, labor exchanges, libraries, clubs of interest , post offices and much more.
As far as families with children are concerned, the possibility of education and leisure activities in their native language comes to the fore. Most large cities have Russian-language educational institutions, sports clubs and summer camps that help migrant children keep in touch with their culture. Also, at the Russian Embassy in Madrid, there is a general education school, established in 1977 for the diplomatic mission, and today offering full-time and part-time education to everyone who is willing to pay from 250 to 350 euros per month for the study of their child.
Where Russians prefer to live in Spain
Most often, immigrants from the former USSR, whom the Spaniards categorically call with one word, “rusos”, choose to live in megacities that are more convenient in terms of finding work, study and housing. The other part relies on silence, good ecology and remoteness from the hustle and bustle, settling in small resort villages by the sea, since the infrastructure in them is “sharpened” not only for tourism, but also for the comfort of residents. Buying property in such towns is, among other things, a profitable investment, given the growing tourist flow year by year.
At the same time, it must be said that, unlike the United States or Australia, the Russian-speaking diaspora in Spain does not form any “districts” or “settlements”, here you will not find “Russian quarters” where only our compatriots live. Meanwhile, there are cities to which “rusos” traditionally move most actively. Such points attract newcomers with infrastructure and services aimed at domestic clients, as well as a large number of specialists with whom one can negotiate in their native language. Among the regions popular with immigration are the coast of Catalonia, in particular, the provinces of Barcelona, Girona and Tarragona; Andalusia, especially Malaga and Marbella; Madrid and suburbs, as well as the entire Levante coast.
Costa Blanca
The “White Coast”, stretching from Denia to Torrevieja, is one of the favorite habitats of the Russian-speaking public – 20% of all those who moved to the Kingdom from the CIS countries prefer to live here, sharing their “piece by the sea” with the elderly English, Dutch and Germans. This is not surprising: the region is famous for its mild climate, magnificent sandy beaches, budget housing and developed tourist infrastructure (more than 80% of the population is employed in it).
The most famous resorts where most Russians live – Torrevieja, Alicante, Benidorm, Elche and Denia – lead among the family holiday destinations in Spain and are recognized by Forbes magazine as the best for retirement. Most of the residents are owners of their own apartments and houses, which, in fact, live in two countries, spending only summer or winter months at the “Spanish dacha”. Many have their own business related to tourism, renting or selling real estate, since the development of this section of the coastal strip is more active than in any other region.
Costa del Sol
Since the second wave of emigration, the entire Málaga area in southern Andalusia has become an “enclave” of wealthy Russians buying luxury villas in urbanizations with heightened security measures. In particular, having the fame of the most expensive Spanish resort, Marbella could not go unnoticed by those seeking permanent residence “with status”. It is here, next to the palaces of Hollywood celebrities and oil tycoons of the Middle East, that famous Russian characters from politics, show business, sports, etc. build their mansions. Those who cannot afford such a neighborhood choose the more modest towns of Estepona, Fuengirola, Benalmadena or Torremolinos.
Among the reasons why compatriots move with their whole families to the Costa del Sol are excellent beaches and pleasantly refreshing sea, excellent infrastructure and respectable surroundings, as well as always in demand luxury real estate. The activity of the diaspora is one of the most noticeable on the peninsula: it is here that the editorial offices of all Russian-language publications are located, many Russian schools, associations, restaurants, etc.
Catalonia
The Catalan coast, which is divided into the Costa Brava, Costa Maresme, Costa Garraf and Costa Dorada, is not only a paradise for beach lovers. Due to its mild climate, picturesque scenery, high salaries and corresponding housing prices, the region is often referred to as “Spanish Switzerland”. The capital of the community, Barcelona is the leader of the Kingdom’s economy, consistently leading the world rankings in terms of quality of life and investment. Like Madrid, it is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Spain and is home to the largest number of immigrants, and quite a few Russians in particular.
In addition to starting a business and buying real estate, the main way of legalization is to study at prestigious universities and business schools of the “sea capital” included in the European TOP-10. The labor market is very dynamic, however, due to high housing prices, many compatriots prefer to settle in the metropolitan suburbs (Mataro, Masnou, Sant Cugat, Castelldefels, Gava, etc. ) or small resort towns on the coast (Lloret de Mar , Calella, Playa d’Aro, S’Agaro, Malgrat), where tourism personnel are always in demand.
The main difficulties for Russians
In surveys conducted among those who left for permanent residence in Spain, many highlight the excellent climate, the possibility of a decent income, including through starting a business, a low crime rate, the hospitality of the local population, fresh seafood and other numerous advantages. Meanwhile, some of those who left their homeland complain about certain problems during the period of adaptation. We list the most common complaints:
-
It is quite difficult for some people from the CIS countries to accept the mentality of the Spaniards. Despite the obvious similarities with our culture, the famous Spanish “manana”, exaggerated sociability and relaxation at first can bring a particularly active audience to white heat.
-
Against the backdrop of rising unemployment, it is not easy for resident foreigners to find a well-paid job.
The way out is sometimes the opening of your own business, for example, a hotel, restaurant or real estate agency, whose activities are mainly aimed at compatriots.
-
The headache of those living in the Kingdom without documents is the constant threat of a meeting with the police, a fine or deportation, as well as the inability to leave for their homeland for three years – the period required for legalization of residence. Finding a decent job for the “documentless” is also a difficult task.
-
Finally, due to the lack of an agreement with the Russian Federation on dual citizenship, many have to make a difficult choice between two passports or illegally live with two, playing “Russian roulette” every time they cross the border.
Work: legal and illegal
Employment can be called one of the main problems of immigrants, especially those who do not have resident status. If quite recently it was possible to work in the country without official permission, the constant tightening of requirements for candidates has led to the fact that today this mission has become almost impossible. Increasing fines for companies that risk hiring illegals has also not made it any easier to make money.
At the moment there are two ways to get the right to work: finding a resident company that will agree to issue a call and an employment contract, or starting your own business. Paradoxically, the first path is more thorny. Few employers are willing to spend time and nerves proving the indispensability of a certain foreign worker against the backdrop of unemployment among locals, and it is precisely this proof that is the main requirement of the migration authorities. Therefore, many Russians choose the second way, working as a private entrepreneur or registering their own company. Starting a company does not in itself allow you to work, but having demonstrated successful activity, which is expressed in making a profit, paying taxes and creating jobs, you can safely ask for a permit.
Foreigners legally working in the country have access to the same social benefits as the Spaniards themselves. So, they can enjoy the benefits of free medical care, corporate insurance, and upon dismissal they will receive a benefit in the amount of 2/3 of their salary.
What professions are most in demand? The greatest demand today is for specialists in such industries as computer technology, telecommunications, medicine, chemical industry, electronic engineering, retail, marketing, banking and financial sectors. It is worth remembering that a diploma of higher education received in Russia is most often subject to homologation, which can take several years. Illegals, on the other hand, can count, at best, only on seasonal work in tourism and agriculture or relatively constant earnings in the construction industry.
Difficulties in adapting
Despite the tendency of our compatriots to criticize, according to surveys, most representatives of the Russian-speaking diaspora are quite satisfied with life in Spain. The mild Mediterranean climate, warm sea, high quality products, safety, similar mentality and social benefits become the triggers, thanks to which the question of returning to their homeland disappears by itself.
At the same time, those who adapt most readily are those who readily immerse themselves in a new environment, adopting local habits and customs and actively making acquaintances. With rare exceptions, immigrants from the post-Soviet space quickly absorb the language and culture of the host state, which distinguishes them favorably from immigrants from the USA, Great Britain or France, who often refuse to integrate into society.
The main difficulties faced by those who have moved to another country for permanent residence are loneliness, bureaucratic red tape, language barriers and the lack of a suitable workplace and housing. The obvious advantage in this sense is the ownership of real estate. In Barcelona and Madrid, the average price of a two-bed apartment can reach 1,000-2,000 euros, so having your own home can help you save a lot or have passive rental income.
Language skills
Fluency in English is a definite plus when applying for a job in Europe, but not in Spain. Despite globalization, representatives of all generations, including young people, speak this language rather mediocrely, so it will become a clear advantage only when employed in an international or foreign company. To be successful, most employers will need, first of all, excellent knowledge of Spanish.
One must be prepared for the fact that in such regions as Catalonia, Galicia, the Basque Country, which are especially concerned about their linguistic sovereignty, misunderstanding of the local dialect can cause great discomfort not only at work. It will be needed when communicating with representatives of various services, contacting government agencies, training and treatment, not to mention a casual conversation with neighbors. The best way out of the situation is to enroll in intensive language courses as soon as possible, where a good command of the main state language will be an undeniable help.
Finding your place in the Spanish sun is not always an easy task.
