Young specialists: starting salary and prospects

In 2022, candidates without experience in Russia could apply for an average of 44,000 ₽. What are salary negotiations and why you should not refuse them

Negotiating wages is one of the last steps in finding a new job. Such negotiations are not the same as asking for a pay raise in your current position. The main difference is that they are conducted at the time of hiring and after the interview, but before signing the employment contract, and not when reviewing conditions some time after taking office.

Such negotiations are useful for several reasons. Even the fact that you initiate them is already a huge plus. After all, this tells the manager about your self-confidence and that at the first opportunity you will consider a more profitable vacancy. In addition, during negotiations, you think about what level of income will suit you, and analyze the situation that has developed in the labor market. It also gives you a higher starting salary.

“Unemployment is now lower than ever. At the same time, the demand for talented and skillful employees remains high, says Luke Stratmann, manager of Robert Half, an S&P 500 HR consulting company with over 70 years of experience. “Professionals have a big advantage.”

By saying “yes” to the employer, you agree to the full range of conditions, including the salary currently accepted. Otherwise, the salary is reviewed, as a rule, only after six months or a year. Refusing to negotiate, you lose the additional amount for the entire time.

“Most employers expect, even welcome, discussions about their proposed terms of cooperation,” Stratmann says.

This step-by-step guide to negotiation will relieve you of empty fears, and you will achieve the best result. You will certainly agree on a really decent salary. And perhaps even get an even better offer from the employer himself. And to achieve this, study the following instruction:

Step 1: Find out what salary your level of professional really is looking for

Lisa Gates, leadership and negotiation coach for businesswomen and one of LinkedIn’s top experts, suggests starting your salary negotiation preparations by finding out what other employees in the same position are earning. To get an idea of ​​the average salary of specialists in the region and in a particular company, ask colleagues or search for information on the net. Don’t settle for less.

Step 2. Know for sure how much your work costs

You have already found out the average salary level for the desired position. Now figure out how much your services cost.

“If you’re a mid-level professional…go for the average salary,” advises Gates. “But if your qualifications are much higher than average, then you have the right to expect more income.”

In any case, the invitation caused a strong emotional response. And so many act impulsively: they respond either with enthusiastic consent or indignant refusal. And you are not in a hurry. Take a deep breath and don’t answer right away, even if it seems like the opportunity of a lifetime is before you.

“It’s important to give a respectful, polite response to the first offer,” says Lauren Margolis, CEO and founder of Training & Leadership Success. “Listen to your feelings and pause.” Margolis is a professional training specialist and a member of the Forbes Council of Business Coaches. Among her clients are companies from the Fortune 500 list. According to Margolis, even with a ready-made solution and determination to immediately begin negotiations with the employer, it is better to take some time to think about the situation. “If you start negotiations right away, there is a great risk of succumbing to emotions. Step 4. Prepare a counter offer

In salary negotiations, it is important to stick to the facts obtained in advance and to name acceptable numbers. They must correspond to the realities of the market. Within the range determined by the local market, select a narrower one that meets your wishes and competencies. If you were asked the question “What salary do you expect?”, what would be the answer?

Let’s say 60 to 80 thousand. Then focus on this range. Let the original offer be 60 thousand per month, 4 weeks of vacation per year, plus medical care and a gym at the expense of the company. Let’s say that this fully meets your expectations, and it fits well into the planned payment range. But there will still be negotiations. “Always bargain, if only to show how you know how to conduct a complex working dialogue,” advises Gates. “The ability to resolve difficulties and get your way is the art of negotiation.”

The exception is companies with “fixed” terms, derogation from which is not allowed, which is announced immediately. If the amount of payment is set rigidly and the employer considers bargaining inappropriate, all that remains is to accept. Unless, of course, you decide to refuse the vacancy. Otherwise, prepare a counter offer. Consider the following numbers:

  • minimum wage you are willing to work for. For example, 65 thousand.
  • target amount. This is the most likely outcome of the negotiations. Aim above the minimum wage. Let it be 70 thousand.
  • is the highest figure you will mention during negotiations. And that’s where you start the discussion. In this case, 80 thousand.

It is very possible that the company will not agree to pay you the “target” amount even after the negotiations are over. But don’t despair. Stratmann urges: “When considering a job offer, look beyond the salary. Additional bonuses, career prospects, corporate culture of the company and many other factors also matter.” And these factors can also be a subject for discussion. Maybe there is a rest room in the office building? Or is it possible to at least sometimes work from home? Scholarships for education? Refresher courses? Extended vacation? Prizes? Maybe something else? Think about what additional options would make the job more attractive to you and include them in your offer.

Step 5: Negotiate Properly

You’ve done a lot of preparation. Are you ready to present its results in a dialogue? Clearly and confidently, despite the excitement that is almost inevitable during an interview? Hardly.

The dialogue itself can take place in person or remotely. But it must be a conversation. Not correspondence. “By exchanging letters, you can discuss some general issues or arrange a meeting,” Stratmann says. “But it’s better to conduct the main negotiations live or by phone, because this way you can better feel the tone of the interlocutor.”

In a personal meeting, intonation is only one of the details worthy of close attention. According to research by Robert Half, recruiting managers note the following features of the applicant for the position:

  • posture;
  • glance;
  • hand gestures;
  • handshake;
  • facial expression;
  • fidgeting, nervousness;
  • whether eye contact is maintained.

That’s why you can’t get off with correspondence. And the ability to use all these features of behavior to your advantage requires a certain skill. “Practice negotiating with someone you know well. It’s time. Let’s take a deep breath and start fighting for better conditions. If negotiations are held in person, do not forget about body language. If you are offered a drink, do not refuse. Sipping aromatic coffee or tea, you will successfully fill in uncomfortable pauses in a conversation and gain some time to gather your thoughts.

If the interview is over the phone, forget about body language and other unnecessary details that are still not transmitted by voice. You can freely use prepared records. But remember how important intonation is. Speak clearly, slowly, and the negotiations will go well.

Step 7. Make sure the terms and conditions are correct
