About the Provider

Description: Child Development Council of Franklin County, Inc. (CDCFC) is a nonprofit organization funded by the U.S. Office of Head Start. Since 1985, CDCFC has provided comprehensive early education and development services to income-eligible Head Start preschool children, ages 3-5, and their families. An Early Head Start program was added in spring 2007, to serve pregnant women and children ages 0-3.

We prepare children for success in kindergarten and beyond, and provide families with tools for overall success. Our programs are FREE for those who qualify under federal poverty guidelines; for others, Child Care Subsidy (formerly Title XX) or private pay options are also available. Currently, CDCFC provides services to more than 2,500 low-income children and their families at over 60 locations throughout Franklin County. Over the years, we have enriched the lives of countless children and families.

St. Agnes of Rome – a true story that has become a Christian legend

The youngest Christian martyr has become a symbol of holiness, purity and purity for millions of believers. The basilicas Sant’Agnese in Agone and Sant’Agnese outside the Walls in Rome were erected in her honor. Her feat is glorified in poetry, in the visual arts, canonized by the Church and imprinted in the hearts of those who seek and suffer. What do we know about her?

The Life of St. Agnes has come down to us in several editions. Only a few are known for certain. For example, her name is Agnese (Greek agnox) – sacred, pure, innocent, chaste. Known also:

– Her social status – was born in a family of so-called liberti, i.e. officially freed from slavery. Perhaps her parents were wealthy people.
– The day of her great martyrdom – January 21.
– Age – from 12 to 13 years. And also the burial place – where the church of Sant’Agnese is now located outside the Fortress Walls (see on the map of Rome).

It can be assumed that Agnes was executed during the Great Persecution of Christians under Emperor Diocletian in 303-313. By that time, according to some historians, there were at least 6 million Christians in the Roman Empire, many of whom participated in state administration. By the same time or a little earlier (295 year) refers to Damascus Edict of Diocletian, which forbids consanguineous marriages and requires steadfast observance of the sacred principles and traditions of Roman law. To a large extent, the implementation of these rules depended on the initiative and ambitions of local mayors – prefects.

The legend of selfless love for God

A sad legend says that in ancient times, when the emperor Diocletian was in power, a certain Sempronius ruled Rome. The son of this prefect was hopelessly in love with a young girl named Agnèssa. The mayor was informed that the girl, who did not want to respond with mutual love to his son, was a member of a Christian sect and possessed the gift of witchcraft. The prefect, following the outlines of the Damascus edict and largely guided by indignation, ordered the girl to be brought and invited her to lead the procession to the temple of Vesta, after which she would sacrifice pagan goddess. It was tantamount to renunciation of Christianity. The girl’s refusal infuriated him: he ordered to immediately undress her and throw her to the amusement of the public at the stadium of Domitian (now the most beautiful square of Navona). And then a miracle happened before the eyes of the crowd: the girl’s hair instantly grew and covered her nakedness.

According to the laws of that time, it was forbidden to execute virgins. Young Agnes was taken to a brothel (it was located on the site where the church of Sant Agnese in Agone is now located) in order to outrage her innocence. According to legend, the gloomy room in which the girl was, suddenly lit up with a bright light – this guardian angel appeared behind Agnes. And no one raised a hand to offend a child. And the son of the prefect, struck by an invisible blow, fell lifeless. In desperation, Sempronius began to beg Agnes to restore the life of his son. After the prayers of the girl, the young man came to life, jumped up and ran through the streets of the city, praising the Christian God and his power in the resurrection of mere mortals.

However, the priests did not like this. They declared Agnes a witch and demanded that she be burned at the stake. As soon as the flames touched the feet of the great martyr, another miracle happened: the fire suddenly went out. Then the young girl was slaughtered like a lamb (see pictures below).

A recent examination of the bones of Saint Agnes did indeed reveal no traces of fire.

Afterword

Saint Agnes is often depicted in iconography with a palm branch and in the presence of a lamb. The palm branch is nothing but a symbol of martyrdom, a recognition of perseverance and moral strength. In ancient Greece, such branches were awarded to the winners of the competition. The lamb is a symbol of innocence and purity.

It is very important to understand the power of the image of Saint Agnes in the context of the events of that time. In the conditions of persecution and torture that the early Christians of Rome were subjected to, it is not surprising that demonstrating belonging to a religion persecuted by the pagans required great fortitude and courage. However, the manifestation of such courage and self-denial in a twelve-year-old child at that time seemed incredible, and therefore made a strong impression on the representatives of the Christian community. That’s why the holy girl was incredibly revered in the 4th century, and her innocence has become the most essential attribute of the legend over time.

In 313, the emperors Constantine and Licinius drew up the Edict of Milan , proclaiming religious tolerance in the territory of the Roman Empire. Just some 10 years later. Unfortunately not before.

Hundreds of years later, in 1645, Pope Innocent X decided to improve Piazza Navona. He ordered to build a basilica in honor of St. Agnes here. The best talents of Rome worked on this responsible project – Girolamo Rainaldi and Francesco Borromini .

The Christian martyr Agnes , who lived in Rome at the turn of the 3rd and 4th centuries, is one of the most famous and revered early Christian saints, whose image is also distinguished by a particularly touching appeal.

The most ancient sources about her life and martyrdom are the panegyric of St. Ambrose of Milan (“On Virginity”, I, 2), the marble inscription of Pope Damasius in the church of Sant’Agnese Fuori le Mura, as well as the hymn of the poet Prudentius dedicated to her, date back to the second half of the 4th century. The life of St. Agnes developed gradually and absorbed elements of oral tradition.

Agnes was born around 291 into a noble Roman Christian family. She was distinguished by her beauty, but already at an early age she decided to devote herself entirely to God and took a vow of celibacy. Meanwhile, the son of the Roman prefect Sempronius was inflamed with passion for her, and when she rejected his matchmaking, he informed the authorities that she was a Christian.

At the beginning of the 4th century, the persecution organized by the emperor Diocletian was in full swing, and therefore Agnes was seized and taken for interrogation to the prefect. He offered her to sacrifice to the pagan gods, but Agnes flatly refused. In an effort to intimidate her, the prefect ordered to show her the instruments of torture, but instead of horror, they only aroused laughter in her: “You can,” she said, “stain your sword in my blood, but you can never defile my body dedicated to Christ” .

Then the enraged prefect ordered her to be undressed and sent naked to a brothel. But when Agnes’ clothes were torn off, her hair miraculously sprouted so that she could cover herself with them. Later, an angel delivered a light veil to her. In the brothel, all the men who tried to approach her suddenly lost their masculine strength and were forced to go home in disgrace, so she retained her chastity.

The fiancé who visited her also died altogether, but when his father begged Agnes to bring him back to life, she prayed for him and he was resurrected.

Ultimately, Agnes was sentenced to be burned at the stake as a witch. When she was led to the place of execution, a crowd of pagans shouted insults at her. However, the soldiers who were to carry out the sentence felt sorry for her and hesitated. Then Agnes said: “Don’t delay. This body awakens such admiration that I hate. Let it die.”

They put her on the fire and lit the fire. Agnes prayed like this: “I will glorify and praise your name throughout the land to its end. I confess You with my mouth and desire You with all my heart. ” Meanwhile, the fire went out. They tried to shackle Agnes, but the shackles fell from her miniature members. Finally, one of the soldiers killed her with a sword, cutting off her head.

It was, according to legend, January 21, 304, when Agnes was 12 years old.

St. Ambrose wrote about her testimony: “At such a tender age, a young girl barely has the courage to withstand the angry look of her father, and from the prick of a needle in her finger she cries out as if from a wound. But this girl had the courage not to be afraid of the sword. She did not lose courage, being in the bloody hands of the executioner. She prayed, she bowed her head. See in her sacrifice a double martyrdom: she preserved her chastity and her faith.”

The poet Prudentius wrote in his hymn dedicated to Agnes: “With one blow she was beheaded, death came faster than pain, and her shining soul, freed, flew away to heaven, where she, following the white road leading to paradise, was met by angels “.

The martyr Agnes was buried in the Roman catacombs, which still bear her name. The place of her burial from the very beginning was surrounded by the veneration of the believing people, miracles were performed there. Then the veneration of St. Agnes spread throughout Western Europe.

The daughter of Emperor Constantine the Great, Constantia, erected in 342 above the catacombs where the remains of the saint rested, a temple, which was later rebuilt into the Basilica of Sant’Agnese Fuori le Mura. Saint Agnes is also dedicated to another Roman temple: Sant’Agnese in Agone, in the crypt of which lies her main relic – a severed head.

For the great Teachers of the Western Church – Ambrose of Milan, Jerome, Augustine – St. Agnes was the personification of virgin purity and chastity. She was revered as the heavenly patroness of virgins.

In the Latin rite, the name of St. Agnes was included in the Roman Canon of St. Mass and Litany to All Saints. St. Agnes is also revered by the Orthodox (January 21 and July 5 according to the Julian calendar), faithful of the Ancient Eastern Churches, Anglicans and Lutherans.
