What people are saying
The teachers are so friendly and hands on. I love the pictures we get of the art activities they do daily. Very glad we chose to send our son here and highly recommend.
Tierra Encantada is a truly special place where you feel like you can trust each and every person to truly care for your child. We feel like our baby is in an extension of our home! ❤️
We love Tierra! We looked at several programs and chose Tierra for a variety of reasons: their care with food preparation (We have a son with allergies), the amazing teachers, the clean / safe / stimulating environment, the great playground. We’re so glad to be there with both of our kids!

“I can’t give Tierra enough praise! On paper, the center had exactly what we were looking for – Spanish immersion, organic food, cloth diapers, a strong curriculum – but in practice, all you ever really want for your kids is for them to be cared for and loved by their caretakers and that’s where Tierra excels above the rest. ” – Meg V., Minneapolis, MN

“Before learning of Tierra we wanted a place that served healthy food, offered bilingual (specially Spanish-English) education, and provided a safe and welcoming environment among many other desires. Tierra offers those things and much more! Free cloth diapers, wipes, bottles, and smiles are also a part of the deal which we were happy about.”

Dive program FAQ
What is bilingual immersion?
Bilingual Immersion is an educational model in which students develop a high level of speaking, reading, writing and listening in English and Spanish. Teachers teach the same APS curriculum content and standards as traditional classroom teachers, bilingual.
What is the difference between a foreign language in elementary school (FLES) and an immersion program?
In an immersive environment, students learn the core curriculum through the lens of an additional language. In the FLES class, the subject of instruction is the language itself, and the focus is on basic Spanish oral communication skills. FLES students spend 60-90 minutes per week learning Spanish as a second language. In immersive mode, the study time in Spanish is over 13 hours per week. Students participating in the Immersion program develop a higher level of Spanish proficiency because, in addition to learning Spanish through content, they receive daily classes in the art of Spanish.
Does APS offer bilingual immersion for both beginner and intermediate levels?
Bilingual Elementary Immersion is offered at Claremont Immersion Elementary School and Francis Scott Key Elementary School. Students can continue their middle and high school bilingual immersion studies at Gunston High School and Wakefield High School.
What special training do immersion teachers have?
Immersion class teachers must hold a Virginia Elementary Education Teaching License. Secondary school teachers have certificates in the subject area they teach (Spanish, Social Studies or Science).
How can I apply?
Incoming elementary school students can apply through the APS elementary school admissions process. The application window is from February 1st to April 15th.
For middle and high school students interested in immersion, there are two options:
1) An Intention to Return Form must be completed for students already enrolled in APS immersion at the elementary level, or
2) Qualifying Exam is required for students who are not yet enrolled in the APS Elementary Bilingual Immersion Program. These students will also need to show that they have participated in a comparable immersion program at another school unit OR are proficient in Spanish. Students who pass the exam and meet the required criteria may then apply to an additional school for admission to the program.
Learn more about the application process
Who is eligible to apply for the dive program?
The immersion program is open to all students. Students interested in participating in the program must complete the Online Application.
How do I determine which immersion school my child will attend?
Depending on where you live, your child will be enrolled in APS Bilingual Immersion at one of the primary immersion schools. When you enter your address into the online Boundary (presence) locator, it lists the immersion school your child will attend, based on your area’s starting zone.
Are siblings of students who are currently enrolled in the program guaranteed a seat or preference?
Yes, when completing the option application, families may indicate that they have a sibling who is currently enrolled in the program. Siblings of students currently enrolled in the Initial Immersion Program have priority to allow siblings to attend the same school.
If my child is enrolled in the VPI program at an immersion school, will they receive priority when applying for the program for kindergarten?
Yes, students enrolled in the VPI program at an immersion school receive priority when applying for admission to the program when their child enters kindergarten.
Only for English speakers?
This program is suitable for both Spanish and non-Spanish speakers. Both groups benefit from the opportunity to become fluent in two languages, as well as to gain the knowledge and high level of academic achievement gained through immersion education. All students learn a deeper understanding and appreciation for other cultures through bilingual immersion while learning the core APS curriculum.
If my child is a Spanish heir, will the program benefit or hinder their ability to learn English?
The program will benefit your Spanish speaking child by improving their ability to learn English.
