Difficult choice of device for night hunting in Russia (vision of the problem from the northern capital)

Back to the list

And I’m standing, counting deftly
Thieves’ mind:
“Urban” with soda –
Popsicle turned out,
For ice cream for twenty-eight
For a lifetime you can’t collect . ..
Dad will flog, won’t ask,
How to drink.

A.Ya. Rosenbaum

What does the law say?

Order of the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia dated December 10, 2013 N 581 supplemented by paragraph 52.13.1 of the “Hunting Rules”.

When catching and (or) shooting game animals it is prohibited:

52.13.1. the use of any light devices, thermal imagers, night vision devices for the extraction of ungulates, bears, fur animals, with the exception of cases of extraction of ungulates and bears in the dark from towers located at a height of at least two meters above ground level, the extraction of a wolf, and as well as cases of using light devices for picking up injured animals in compliance with the requirements established by these Rules.

From earlier documents, everyone knows the Government Decree “On the procedure for using night vision scopes for hunting” – It is allowed to install night vision scopes exclusively on hunting firearms. You can only hunt with devices certified as hunting, not military, only if these devices are installed on hunting weapons. And now only a small permissive exception has been prescribed: “only the extraction of ungulates and bears at night from towers located at a height of at least two meters above ground level, the extraction of a wolf, as well as cases of using light devices to collect injured animals in compliance with the requirements established by these Rules”. Approach hunting and driven hunting with the use of such devices are not provided for in the law.

Choosing the right weapon

Based on all this, for a law-abiding hunter, the question arises of choosing the model of such a device when buying, so as not to remain subsequently without the right to hunt. The distance limit for a night shot from a similar tower at a wild boar, or from a storage shed at a bear is 70 meters, which is permissible when using conventional 12-gauge smoothbore weapons. If there are so many restrictions, then what kind of budget should be laid for such a modern product and whether overestimated military characteristics are needed. The use of conventional underbarrel lanterns, which unmasks the hunter, has exhausted itself, frightens game, and annoys colleagues and hunters with a similar effect in the dark. If you are the owner of a classic 12-gauge shotgun, where there is no possibility of a fixed fixation of the device without constant edits, then installing a modern night or thermal imaging sight on such a smooth-bore weapon will lead to constant problems associated with curvature, and even worse, detachment of ventilated straps. The weight of the device reaches 1 kg, this is not a collimator sight weighing up to 300 g. Nothing can be done, since such hunting tools were developed by gunsmiths before the jump in night vision technology. Some models of modern 12-gauge semi-automatic rifles (“Saiga”, “Vepr”) have a reliable mounting fit made of steel for such heavy night devices. But not everyone is a fan of such brands of domestic weapons based on military counterparts, many even refer to such products as a security option and insultingly call them “firewood”, but this is an individual matter. In the struggle for a mass of weapons, in order to unload the hunter, world manufacturers produce receiver covers for modern semi-automatic devices made of composite materials, lightweight alloys. How to fix a heavy sight on such a base? A good solution is to buy a rifled carbine that is not very heavy and has the best ergonomics with a full-fledged fastening of such a device to the receiver. Nobody canceled good accuracy when firing, but this option is possible after a five-year experience with a hunter. This issue was resolved by the appearance on the market of a line of carbines in 366 caliber (sold under a license for smoothbore weapons), designed for a longer shot, but most of them are based on the same heavy army weapon models. A bipod on a weapon with a thermal imaging or night sight installed solves a similar mass issue when used on a tower. The option of detecting and picking up game with the help of a monocular, binoculars, or glasses with similar night vision characteristics also solves the issue of using smooth-bore weapons for hunting. For a more detailed understanding, let’s look at the main technical and functional points on this topic.

Types of devices for night hunting

Today, three main types of devices for hunting are available to the consumer:

  • devices based on image intensifier tubes of various generations
  • electronic devices on CCD matrices
  • thermal imagers

Each of the subgroups is available in the form of conventional “peeping monoculars” and binoculars (greater comfort of stereoscopic vision and a wider viewing angle). If for you at night observations a fundamental factor is freedom of movement, then glasses and monoculars with a mask on the head are a good solution to this problem. Such NVDs are light in weight and dimensions. However, the basis of night vision devices for a hunter is sights designed to be fired from hunting weapons with different muzzle energies.

1. Devices based on image intensifier tubes

Devices of the 1st generation with an image intensifier tube of the zero generation , the lower price level with recognition up to 150 m: amplification of the reflected light from the IR illuminator up to 500 times, where the internal voltage is up to 17.000 volts, weak and dust particles attracted by a static charge are often visible in the visible picture due to the huge voltage – it is necessary for the operation of the zero generation image intensifier tube. The main disadvantage of the first generation sights is the glass tube of the image intensifier tube, it is not recommended to install these sights on smoothbore weapons and rifled weapons over 308 WIN (7.62×51 mm) with a muzzle energy over 3.700 J. The image remains clear only in the center of the field of view with distortion at the edges . In image intensifier tubes of the 1+ generation, flat glasses were replaced with fiber-optic washers, the micro-holes of which have a strict direction. 1+ devices are less prone to side flare, have better image quality across the entire field of view. But the time for such devices is running out, such a purchase is comparable to the purchase of a CRT TV in the age of LCD and plasma.
Image intensifier tube 2 plus which amplifies reflected light by a factor of 35,000, but the image intensifier tube only needs 700 volts. Detailed picture at a distance of 300 m. Excellent picture even without unmasking IR flashlight. There are no restrictions on the use of sights on all types of hunting weapons in terms of muzzle energy. But the price of such products is still high.
Instruments with 3rd generation image intensifier tube with up to 50.000 times luminous flux amplification. According to the characteristics, they are close to 2+, but the difference is in a very small illumination gap: when the 2+ generation does not see, but the 3rd generation still sees. The price is even higher, closer to thermal imagers. It is not possible for manufacturers to achieve a big difference in practice, and even when viewed under normal daylight conditions, it is not possible. Branded night vision devices 2+ sometimes have a better picture than 3rd generation devices. More widespread among the military for field conditions due to the problem with side illumination (there is no fiber optic washer, as in the 1st generation of image intensifier tubes). Devices for gourmets and connoisseurs of perfection.
The NVG magnification is indicated in the name by the first digit, where the amount of NVG magnification depends on the ratio of the focal length of the lens and the eyepiece. The eyepieces of most models have almost the same characteristics. The lens objective collects as much weak light as possible from the object of observation: the larger the objective, the brighter the image of the device. The field of view in the passport is indicated in degrees, the larger it is, the better for the observer. The accompanying passport also indicates the focusing range – working distances at which night vision devices can give a clear picture, play for yourself a situational practical task for your future shots and distances. For night vision devices, the resolution is specified in the number of visible lines per millimeter. This value completely depends on the generation used in the design of the image intensifier tube. The higher the resolution, the finer details you will be able to see at greater distances when moving away from the subject. The IR flashlight must work at a certain wavelength, since a small part of the IR spectrum is in the visible range of the future trophy. The appearance of laser (hardly noticeable in terms of wavelength for the beast) flashlights solved the problem with the hunter’s disguise. A bad factor is the intolerance of image intensifier tubes to any source of illumination, not only sunlight, but also to the light of car headlights, light from the windows of houses at night, and sighting on weapons during the day is possible only using a micro-hole in the lens cover of the device. If there is a curious child in the hunter’s house, then any devices on the image intensifier tube, with intolerance to any strong light source, it is better to put it in a turnkey gun cabinet so as not to disable the image intensifier tube of the device (when playing in the light) forever. The undoubted advantage of devices on the image intensifier tube is the ability to work at temperatures up to -30 C, which is especially suitable for hunting ungulates in Russia.

2. Digital instruments

Digital devices are the achievement of the last years of development: they are not afraid of the recoil of any weapon, with adjustment and change of aiming mark, recording and transmission of images is possible, they are insensitive to illumination and are universal regardless of the time of day. In terms of power and recognition range, these devices in recent years are already approaching the 2nd generation on image intensifier tubes, but at a price lower, at least twice, which is a fundamental point when choosing a hunter. Manufacturers managed to create devices that work up to -25 C, since the first samples worked only up to -15 C. The sighting on weapons is carried out in daylight in the operating mode of the device. Digital night vision devices are clearly inferior to conventional night vision devices in terms of image quality (resolution, color reproduction), they require illumination, like outdated 1+ generation night vision devices on image intensifier tubes. Provided that at night in a clear sky there is not at least a quarter of the lunar disk, the hunter will need IR illumination.

3. Thermal cameras

And what should a hunter do when a future trophy is found in conditions of smoke, bushes, rain, fog, which is not such a rare occurrence in nature? Here, a conventional night vision device that perceives weak reflected light will not be an assistant. The next “guest from the defense industry” will come to the rescue – a thermal imager that allows you to see not reflected, but your own infrared radiation of objects, which does not depend on lighting conditions in the visible range. The principle of operation of the device is based on the ability of materials in the structure to capture radiation in the infrared range. And why so much money for this “guest from the defense industry”?
Frederick William Herschel, a German by birth, is considered the discoverer of infrared radiation, already at the very beginning of the 19th century. Herschel explored visible sunlight, using a prism to display the spectrum in his rainbow of colors. The scientist placed the thermometer in different colors and found that all colors have different temperatures. A thermometer placed beyond the red end of the visible color spectrum reports a significant rise in temperature. Herschel’s conclusion: the wavelengths of the light spectrum are far beyond what the ordinary human eye can see. Almost two centuries later, Herschel’s conclusion is used in thermal imaging: invisible radiation in the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum beyond the visible red in the color spectrum is captured by thermal imaging devices and becomes visible to the human eye. We use this phenomenon in thermal imagers for target detection when hunting.
In a thermal imager, which is designed with lenses made using rare metals that are transparent to infrared radiation (such as germanium), the thermal radiation of objects is projected onto a sensor matrix that is sensitive to the infrared radiation mentioned earlier. After that, the microcircuits read information from the sensors with further generation of a video signal, where a certain color corresponds to a different temperature of the observed object, or a different tonality of the image on the display with the image being fed to the observer through the eyepiece. Different models of thermal imagers differ in the size of the measured temperature step. The peculiarity of the lens is that it is expensive to manufacture, it is made of single-crystal germanium, and not of ordinary glass, because. it does not transmit infrared radiation in the part of the spectrum where the thermal imager operates. An important component in terms of cost and value in the thermal imager is the matrix, which makes it possible to see invisible thermal radiation, where each element of the matrix (pixel) consists of a separate thermistor, and when heated, the resistance inside the thermistor changes, which is fixed by the “brain” of the matrix and then a transition occurs into a visible image (visualization). All these are compact devices with an uncooled matrix, which make up over 85% of the market for all thermal imagers. Many models of thermal imagers are equipped with memory devices for recording the received video image. Now for the hunter are available pictures of thermal radiation in the recorded time period. The device is useful when searching for wounded animals and trophies while hunting in the dark, without involving dogs of hunting breeds, the maintenance of which is currently not so cheap, and there is less trouble with a thermal imager than with a four-legged pet, it does not need to be trained and brought up from puppyhood . Setting up a thermal imager according to an accompanying passport takes less time, not years, in comparison with raising a dog, from which it is not known what will turn out in terms of working qualities.
Yes, thermal imaging optics also has disadvantages. Detailed recognition of a trophy, namely, to distinguish a male from a female, even at short distances, is possible only on very expensive models of thermal imagers. Such savings can lead to an impressive fine on the part of hunters in case of an erroneous shot by the hunter, if the trophy obtained is not a billhook. In addition, matrices for thermal imaging sights are mainly produced in the United States, France and Belgium, where exports are officially closed during the period of sanctions. Neighboring Belarus with products from Yukon / Pulsar will help us in order to avoid smuggling and service issues in the hunting spaces of Russia. Even practical and thrifty Europeans for many years in a row make their mass choice in favor of such devices from Yukon / Pulsar. Often, from the personal practice of many years of sales in Russia, you see a hunter – a buyer who carefully hides the receipt from his household when buying such an expensive device in the form of a thermal imaging sight. At the same time, you think about whether such a loss is necessary for the family budget. Wouldn’t it have been easier to put together a set of a much cheaper Axion thermal imaging monocular for detecting a trophy at distant approaches and a digital sight from the same manufacturer in the form of Photon, Pulsar Digisight Ultra, or the new Pulsar Digex, if we produce a trophy exclusively from a tower on short distances up to 100 meters in the conditions of Russian reality. The digital night sight of this manufacturer recognizes the target at a short distance without error. Recently developed uncooled systems are most suitable for the tasks of a modern hunter – they are equipped with a vanadium oxide-based detector, which ensures the minimum size of the camera, hence the small dimensions, minimum power consumption and high resolution, in comparison with the overall cooled systems with mercury-cadmium telluride in the design where a cryogenic cooler is used to allow the detector to distinguish smaller differences in infrared radiation. All this is embodied in the design from Yukon / Pulsar. And remember: in practice, sky-high distances for confident recognition of a future trophy in the dark are unlikely to be needed if you follow the rules of hunting in Russia.

Upland game and hunting for it in autumn and winter

11/26/2019

September, and autumn is already coming into its own. A yellow leaf flew from the birches, and this year the mountain ash stands as if it were red-hot, the leaves cannot be seen behind a dense curtain of bright red berries. And this means that the hunting calendar has opened the page of upland game.

The rules of hunting tell us that wood grouse, black grouse, hazel grouse, ptarmigan and ptarmigan, as well as woodcock belong to upland game. God knows why both named partridges were included in this list. White lives on the edges of moss swamps and, in fact, is a kind of relic of the ice age in the forest zone. On the other hand, for some reason, this list did not include such typically forest hunting birds as pigeons: wood dove, stock dove and turtledove, which were classified as steppe and field game.

But be that as it may, today the most famous and popular species of upland game are black grouse, hazel grouse, capercaillie (common and stone) and woodcock. And hunting for them is completely different.

Of these birds, the most numerous and widespread species is the hazel grouse. I’ll start with him.

The hazel grouse ( Bonasa bonasia ) belongs to the grouse birds, which, in turn, belong to the order Galliformes. The species lives almost everywhere in the forest and taiga zone of Eurasia from Western Europe to Korea. Most of the world population of hazel grouse, defined as 40 million birds, is in Russia. In fact, the northern border of its range is everywhere the border of the forest distribution. In the south, hazel grouse is also distributed mainly to the border of the forest zone, although sometimes it penetrates into the forest-steppe, living in large forests. Most often, 11 subspecies are distinguished, which outwardly differ quite slightly from each other.

The hazel grouse is a small, jackdaw-sized, plump bird with a disproportionately small head and a short beak. The weight of even the largest individuals rarely exceeds 0.5 kg, usually 400-450 g. The plumage is variegated, grayish-brownish tones with black and light small patches – camouflage that allows it to “dissolve” in the environment. The difference in color between male and female is not as great as in other chickens. It is good to distinguish them by a spot on the throat. The male has a black spot, while the female has a light, almost whitish spot. A small red ring is clearly visible around the eye, in the male it is more pronounced; again, the crest on the head of the male is larger. Juveniles of both sexes are colored like females.

A typical hazel grouse habitat is a mixed forest with rugged relief, a network of streams, ravines, with clearings, and the edges of swamps. Forest areas with an abundance of deadwood, dense dense spruce forest and interspersed with birches and aspens are ideal protective and fodder conditions for the existence of hazel grouse. The hazel grouse willingly stays along the forest roads, overgrown along the roadside with edible plants, with the constant presence of water in the ruts and placers of pebbles.

Like all chickens, hazel grouse runs well and willingly on the ground; in the warm season, he generally spends most of his time “on the floor”, where he finds the main seasonal food. But at the same time, he is also a virtuoso flyer, swiftly sweeping through the interweaving of branches, without touching a single needle. Usually, the hazel grouse rises on the wing with noise, flies straight and not for long, “sticking” into the dense crown at a height of half a tree. Sat down and disappeared. It is not often possible to look out for him on a branch, even with binoculars. In August – the first half of September, when the broods are still together, hazel grouses often frighten berry pickers, with a noise “exploding” with all the broods from the thickets.

Once they came to hunt in the Tver province, the forester’s wife says:

– Oh, guys, ryabov beitya!

– Baba Zina, why didn’t the ripples please you?

– Oh, well, them! Frighten. The obovchor went into the berry, and they from the bush – pfyr-r-r! I sat up in fear.

The hazel grouse is a sedentary bird. Unlike other grouse birds, the hazel grouse is monogamous and forms pairs for every season. Each pair has its own individual area, the boundaries of which the male marks with a whistle song. This whistle, consisting of two long and several short knees, can be heard at a distance of up to 100 m in calm weather. Both males and females whistle, showing particular activity during the mating season, as well as in autumn. In autumn, there is a redistribution of plots, the reorganization of old and the formation of new couples. However, only males respond to the call at this time. The whistling of males has pronounced individual characteristics both in tonality and rhythm, while the bird can whistle somewhat differently from time to time. In different parts of the vast range of the species, the manner of whistling varies greatly, no less than the languages of different peoples.

Why do I write in such detail about behavioral and environmental features? But because it is directly related to the organization of the correct hunt for hazel grouse.

HUNTING FOR GRICE

Thanks to its delicious meat, hazel grouse has long been one of the most important hunting birds. The meat of hazel grouse is white, lean. Therefore, it is traditionally referred to as delicacy game, and hazel grouse broth was considered in the old days, and is still considered medicine by the people.

In the past, hazel grouse was harvested on an industrial scale for wholesale deliveries to the market of large cities. In Russia in pre-revolutionary times and in the 1930s – 1960s, he took first place among upland game in commercial preparations. He also held the first place in the supply of game abroad, and the currency earned for hazel grouse played a role in the industrialization of the state.

Of course, hazel grouse was hunted primarily by various snares, which is currently strictly prohibited in the implementation of amateur feather hunting. Now hazel grouse can only be hunted with firearms or pneumatic weapons.

To organize a hazel grouse hunt, you first need to understand whether there is a hazel grouse in the selected areas. It happens that the forest seems to be quite suitable for its habitation, but it is not clear whether it exists or not. Exploration is easy. It is necessary to slowly, quietly, walk in the early morning through the forest and listen to whether they whistle or not. In winter, it is possible to determine whether the forest is grouse, by the traces of their overnight stays in the snow (after the departure of the birds, characteristic holes remain with traces of wings on the sides), as well as by litter. Heaps of droppings, consisting of short worm-shaped “sausages”, usually remain in places where the birds spent the night or daytime rest. It is easiest to notice the droppings on fine snow from the first winter. Another sign of the presence of hazel grouses are “baths” – holes cut in the soil, in which hazel grouses, like chickens, bathe in dust. If you find such a place, then you can be sure that the birds stay nearby.

Of the rifle methods of hazel grouse, it makes sense to talk about hunting from the approach and hunting for a decoy (beep).

Hunting from approach is usually low-yielding. Two methods are practiced. The first is a simple self-top. You just quietly and slowly walk through the hazel grouse places. A bird, having taken off, often does not really understand where the danger comes from and what it is, and therefore sits on a tree to look around. Here you need to shoot without delay. Such prey is most often accidental, although in good places, and in the “grouse” year, and at the right time, you can take about three pieces a day. Self-topping is best done in early – mid-September, when the hazel grouses are still kept by broods, and the young are stupid and not so careful. Young animals, as a rule, become prey during such a hunt. The best places for self-driving are forest edges with clearings and thickets of alder, the border of the forest and moss cranberry or blueberry swamps or overgrown clearings with lingonberries, blueberries, thickets of shiksha. The best time for stalking hunting is early morning or afternoon. At this time, the hazel grouse are feeding, the broods are widely dispersed on the fattening, and the hunter is more likely to trample the bird. Birds feeding on the ground take off and often land openly on alder and birch trees about three meters above the ground.

Another method is the decoy approach. Having determined by the whistle the place where the hazel grouse sits, the hunter, answering the decoy, quietly walks towards the bird, looking out for it in the branches or on the ground. To be honest, it is rarely possible to approach a hazel grouse in this way. In my opinion, this is just a fidget hunt. Once it was possible to take a whistling stupid young ruffled rump from the approach, so it runs to everyone, instead of hunting normally with a decoy (beep) with feeling, really, with an arrangement.

Hunting with a decoy (beeper) is a classic hunting for hazel grouse. It is for this hunt that hazel grouse is so loved by its true connoisseurs. This is my favorite hunt too. Slow, no fuss. The whistle of hazel grouse for forest dwellers is a signal that everything is calm. You whistle with a pockmark, and around there is a forest life, usually hiding from even a silently walking hunter. I love this hunt for dissolving in nature, for contemplation. I managed to see a lot on the wild grouse hunts, beckoning with a squeaker. Hares passed by, foxes came to me, obviously hoping to catch a whistler sitting on the ground. Once in the Tver region, I whistled for forty minutes with the “professor”, who willingly answered, flew around from tree to tree, but stubbornly did not show up. This whistling ended with the fact that a young three-year-old bear came out to me.

Hunting with a decoy is based on the territorial behavior of hazel grouse, their attachment to their individual sites and the obligatory sound designation by the male of both the boundaries and the very fact of the site being occupied. The meaning of the hunt is that the hunter, with the help of a decoy, imitates the invasion of a stranger into an already occupied area and provokes the male to fly up and “deal with” the intruder.

From my own experience, and from conversations with other hunters, I will say that before the third decade of September in the forest with decoy, by and large, there is nothing to do. Juveniles are recommended to attract the young brood with the voice of the female, but personally I have never succeeded in this, and I have not heard from anyone that it was possible. They answer, but do not fly. Their mother is with them, and they know her voice very well. Why would they fly to someone else’s aunt? The best time for hunting with decoys is in October – early November. At this time, there is a breakdown into pairs, the division of territory, and therefore the males are perky and willingly go to the squeaker.

The most important thing in this hunt is the ability to beckon. In the hunting literature, there are many options for describing the wild grouse whistle. In my opinion, trying to convey this seemingly not at all complicated whistle in printed text is a completely stupid thing. On the Internet, you can easily find good collections of sound files. Focusing on the recording of voices, you need to learn how to work with a call at home, practicing all the techniques to full automatism. Well, actually, as with any musical instrument.

There is a more or less general rule that the rhythm of the whistle of a hazel grouse is conveyed by the words “pya-i-yat, pya-i-yat black grouse.” But the whistle is very variable. The young ones are shorter, from the “black grouse” they often whistle only “tet”. The female’s whistle is quieter, with a hoarseness, they write that the rhythm is different, such as “pya-i-yat – black grouse – pya-i-yat.” I have heard this in the forest many times. To what extent this is the voice of a female, I can’t honestly say. I didn’t see the bird myself. It is necessary to separate the knees of the song not by blowing – stopped – blowing again, but with the tongue, as if spitting out the husk, or, as musicians playing wind instruments say, “from the tongue”.

Again, as already mentioned, in different places the manner of whistling is very different.

Once, while in Primorye, I decided to hunt hazel grouse. He whistled in a European way, as he used to in the Tver and Kirov forests. They responded, but did not fly, and somehow responded with bewilderment. As if a man was walking in a Russian forest, and he was hailed. Human voice, but… in Chinese.

Therefore, you can truly learn to beckon only from the hazel grouse itself, reproducing his voice as accurately as possible. And you need to do this exactly in those places where you are going to hunt. It is necessary to listen to a live bird and, imitating it, develop a skill. In a new place, you always need to listen, whistle with the local bird, learn the local “dialect”. The whistle should be as similar as possible to the local “dialect”. This is one of the main conditions for success.

In general, learning to lure a hazel grouse is not as difficult as it might seem. Of course, for people with a good ear for music, this science is easier. But even those whom nature has deprived of a musical gift are also quite successfully mastering it. Personally, the bear in my ear not only stepped on, but also trampled on in full. And nothing, it turns out.

In practice, everything happens as follows. At dawn, still at dusk, you enter the forest and quietly walk to the places you have chosen in advance. It is dawning, the forest feathered people are waking up. You walk along the path slowly, listening to the whistle. You swear, you wait. If the wait is too long, then you can start on your own. Whistling, after 3-4 minutes the second, then another three minutes later – the third. Must respond. If not, then stand quietly and, if possible, silently change the place, moving 30-50 meters. Repeat whistles. Perhaps the hunter had not invaded someone else’s territory before, the local owner was awake and was in no hurry to call the new “neighbor”. By shifting, you violate the boundaries. It’s not until the morning bliss. A whistle starts, then you hear – a flight, another, and here it is – snort – sat half a tree in the nearest thick Christmas tree. Whistle. There is no need to rush to respond. Hazel clearly spotted the place where he heard the whistle of the intruder. Silence creates intrigue. He whistles, but you do not answer, he whistles again in a minute or two, and in response, silence again. Another two or three minutes of silence. You can almost feel the indignation and some confusion of the local hazel grouse with your skin. And when his patience starts to run out, you whistle, but a little quieter, and with your palm you direct the sound down and to the side. So it is difficult for hazel grouse to determine exactly the source of the sound. He will definitely flutter out of annoyance and sit down in plain sight. Yes, ready!

Often, having arrived, it immediately sits down in plain sight. Clear patterns of behavior, of course, no. Well this is a living bird, not a mechanism of some kind. It is necessary to conduct a “dialogue” with the responding hazel grouse slowly, do not whistle often. You need to catch that mood when it’s indecent to talk a lot, and you can’t keep silent too much. It is necessary to maintain a conversation, but weave intrigue with omissions. Again, if you whistle often, you will probably be out of tune.

It often happens that a hazel grouse that has been whistling falls silent and does not respond once or twice. There are options here. Firstly, he may simply doubt his abilities and wonder whether it is worth messing with a stranger. You have to wait, nature takes its toll, in 5-10 minutes the hazel grouse will respond and sooner or later will arrive, or it will not arrive. Secondly, a long silence is often caused by the fact that the hazel grouse goes to meet the intruder on foot. So you have to look down and listen. On a quiet, windless autumn day, it can be clearly heard how a walking male rustles leaves, flutters onto fallen trees. The ability to direct the call sound down and a little to the side in such cases is very useful. A hazel grouse does not identify a motionless hunter. Sometimes it comes close. Once such a “fighter”, having fluttered from a stump, sat down on my boot toe sticking up.

Having mastered the first science of “whistling hazel grouse”, you can move further along the path of improving skills. Again, listening to the “interlocutors”. Here, you hear from the answers and flights that both the male and the female are nearby. And the male has already got excited, whistles often. That’s when you can designate yourself as impudent, give out an elongated song like “five-five, five-five, five-five grouse-five-yat.” The male almost always flies to such a boorish challenge. And if he didn’t fly in, then he was young, he didn’t accept the challenge and carefully walks on foot to see what kind of “cool” showed up there. But it is necessary to use this technique to the place and time and only once. Whistling so several times from one place is pointless and even harmful.

Hunting for a beeper is interesting not least because everything happens differently with each bird. And their whistling is different for everyone, and their reaction to the call is also completely different. But if you start whistling, then in no case should you change your “song”.

The readiness of the hazel grouse to go to the decoy is highly dependent on the weather. In bad weather, hazel grouse hide in the needles, they are not up to showdown. If the weather is cloudy with a breeze, but without bad weather, then it happens that the hazel grouse is silent like a partisan, but still flies or comes. Therefore, I am in no hurry to leave a good place, even when it seems that my call has been ignored. Now, if no one happened for about twenty minutes, then you can leave.

You can beckon standing, you can sit. Who better. Sitting – it is more convenient, but it is almost impossible to imperceptibly change position, adapt to the direction of the approach of the hazel grouse.

Ryaba somehow beckoned. Swis-swiss, pyrr-pyrr… It takes off from the left, flies by and sits down openly ten meters away, over the right shoulder. What to do? Carefully and slowly change the position of the gun and shoot from the left shoulder.

The hazel grouse most willingly sits in the Christmas trees. Keep this in mind when choosing a location. If there is spruce nearby, especially dense, then the hazel grouse is very likely to sit there. Therefore, it is necessary to position yourself so that this tree is in the zone of confident defeat. Most likely, it will be so, but exceptions happen regularly. The hazel grouse almost always sits in the crown close to the trunk, but if there is a prominent arcuate curved branch or an inclined trunk, then it is likely that it will sit there.

I’ll say more. When, flying, the ripple approaches a little, it is better to whistle in the opposite direction from it. So he will determine the position of the source of the whistle farther than it really is, and he can sit down very close and in plain sight.

A sat down hazel grouse immediately flies away from the sharp and noticeable movements of the hunter. But if you move your hands slowly and smoothly, and the movements themselves are not very sweeping, then he suffers this, to his own misfortune.

The optimal time for decoy hunting is highly dependent on the weather and habitat. The average general rule is as follows: from dawn until 11-12 o’clock in the afternoon, then from 16 o’clock until dusk.

WEAPONS, CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT D FOR HUNTING GRICE

For hunting hazel grouse, any shotgun will do. Hazel grouse have to shoot at a short distance – 25 meters – and sitting. There is no opportunity to make a second shot, and besides, hunting is running. Therefore, a good weapon for this hunt would be a single-barreled 20, 28, 32, or even .410 caliber. For 12-gauge and 16-gauge guns, it is better to load cartridges with a reduced weight of powder and shot, as for 20-gauge or 28-gauge ones. Fraction No. 7 is usually quite enough for a hazel grouse. True, it often happens to shoot through the spruce branches, so I still prefer shot number 5. When shot from a hazel grouse, feathers always fly like from a shot pillow. If the hazel grouse fell and beats in agony – it is taken, and if it fell and quietly, then most likely it is wounded and, once on the ground, quickly runs away or clogs under a hummock, snag, root, where it cannot be found without a dog. In my opinion, the best way to get hazel grouse is to shoot it with a small-caliber rifle. The hazel grouse is a classic “small” species. Shooting is interesting, accurate, quiet, without a roar that scares away all living things. And honest: without wounded animals. If he hit, then he took it, if not, then a clean miss. I myself hunt hazel grouse with a combination shotgun “Sever” with a smooth barrel of 20 gauge and a rifled barrel chambered for 5.6 rimfire (.22 LR). In my opinion, the best combination for such a hunt.

Clothing should be light, comfortable, not rustling, warm according to the weather, taking into account that there is a lot of walking, but walking is unhurried, and often you have to sit for a long time and motionless. The hunter should merge with the forest, therefore it is better to have a camouflage color for the season. On the feet are boots. In wet weather – rubber with a thick toe and footcloths, and in more or less dry weather, I prefer light tarpaulin boots with soft polyurethane soles. Warm, dry, soft, and the feet breathe, and do not fade, as in rubber.

And the most important thing is decoys (pischiki). A hazel grouse decoy is a small whistle. A tube with a slot and a tongue inserted inside. In the time of the ona, hunters made hazel squeakers from goose feathers, cast from tin, and mostly made them from bones. Hare, goose, owl, hawk and others that fit in size. Fans make such squeakers to this day. I myself made bone decoys when I was young. And also soldered them from tins cut off from cans. Occasionally and now I make hare bone decoys as a gift. Now on sale you can easily find quite good ready-made decoys. Plastic, metal, combined.

Both domestic and foreign production. For every taste and budget. When buying a decoy, you need to choose by sound. The whistle must be ringing and clean. It is better to take adjustable decoys. And buy several different types and from different materials at once. It is impossible to give unambiguous advice. Experienced ryabushnik hunters each have their own preferences. In general, we can say:

– plastic decoy is closer in properties to bone or feather decoy. The sound is quieter, softer and more natural. Again, on a cord, where there are always several decoys, plastic decoys do not knock or ring. Less affected by condensation. But they break easier, and in windy weather, when the forest is noisy, they are less audible;

– metal calls are stronger, louder, good with forest noise. Among metal decoys, systems with a variable setting are more common. But these decoys tinkle against each other and become heavily clogged with condensate, especially in cold weather. They have to be carefully and silently blown, and between decoys it is better to keep them in the lips, putting them along the lips and warming them.

Now restless craftsmen, not satisfied with the variety of decoys available in the trade, continue to make them themselves, but many are already made from modern materials: insulin syringes, various plastic and metal tubes, thick wires, etc. There are a large number of materials on this topic on the Internet with drawings, drawings and detailed descriptions of the manufacturing process.

WHAT NOT TO DO WHEN HUNTING GRILL

First of all, and this is the main thing, in no case should you hunt hazel grouse in the spring. This hunt is very simple and destructive. Spring is the time of current and reproduction. The male, drugged by hormones raging in the blood, flies to any whistle. But you can’t! It would seem, why not? A male black grouse is allowed, a male capercaillie is allowed, but a hazel grouse, which is their relative, is not allowed? And because neither the capercaillie nor the black grouse, the males take part either in incubation or in the rearing of chicks. Their role is limited only to the fertilization of the female. And one male tramples several females, and one female copulates with several males. Grouse are monogamous, creating a permanent pair for the season. The male takes part in breeding and rearing the chicks.
