Geography
Woodland Hills is located in the southwestern part of the San Fernando Valley, which is located east of Calabasas and west of Tarzana. It borders the West Hills, Canoga Park, Winnetka, and Reseda to the north, and the Santa Monica Mountains to the south.
Some areas are in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains. From east to west, U.S. Route 101 (Ventura Highway) and Ventura Boulevard, whose western terminus is at Valley Circle Boulevard in Woodland Hills, run through the township.
History
This area was inhabited for about 8,000 years by Fernandegno-Tataviam and Chumash-Venturano Native Americans who lived in the Santa Monica and Simi Hills near the Arroyo Calabasas (Calabasas Creek) tributary of the Los River. Angeles at present. -Woodland Hills day. The first Europeans to enter the San Fernando Valley were the Portola expedition in 1769.year, exploring Alta California in search of Spanish missions and settlement sites. Seeing it from the modern Sepulveda Pass, the oak savanna inspired them to name the area El Valle de Santa Catalina de Bononia de Los Encinos (Saint Catherine’s Valley of Bononia Oaks). Mission San Fernando Rey de España (Mission San Fernando) was founded in 1797 and controlled the lands of the valley, including the future Woodland Hills.
Title to the southern half of the valley, south of present-day Roscoe Boulevard from Toluca Lake to Woodland Hills, held by Americans in the 1860s, first by Isaac Lankershim (as the “San Fernando Farm Estate Association”) in 1869year, then to Isaac Lankershim. son of James Boon Lankershim and Isaac Newton Van Nuys (as “Los Angeles Farm and Mill Company”) in 1873, and finally in “the largest land deal ever recorded in Los Angeles County” by a syndicate led by Harry Chandler of Los Angeles. Angeles Times with Hobart Johnston Whitley, General Moses Sherman and others (as the Los Angeles Suburban Homes Company) in 1910.
Victor Girard Kleinberger bought 2,886 acres (1,168 ha) in the area from Chandler’s group and founded the city of Girard in 1922 year. He sought to attract residents and businesses by developing infrastructure, advertising in newspapers, and planting 120,000 trees. Its 300 pepper trees formed a canopy over Canoga Avenue between Ventura Boulevard and Saltillo Street and became Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Landmark No. 93 in 1972. The community of Girard was eventually incorporated into Los Angeles, and in 1945 it became known as Woodland. Hills.
Climate
The San Fernando Valley in the Woodland Hills experiences more dramatic temperature changes from season to season than other regions. Temperatures are often very high in summer, while nighttime temperatures in winter are among the lowest in the region. On September 6, 2020, Woodland Hills recorded the highest temperature ever recorded in Los Angeles County, reaching 121°F (49°C) at Pierce College, matching Chino’s reading as the highest temperature ever recorded west of the mountains in Southern California. . The climate is classified as Csa under the Köppen climate classification, which is characterized by mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers. This climate is often referred to as Mediterranean. Rainfall in the Woodland Hills averages the same as most other areas of the western San Fernando Valley, although the surrounding hills receive slightly more rainfall.
