Menu for the elderly
The Kiev Agreement of 1963 proposed a division into the following categories: before aging – from 45 to 59 years old, the category of the elderly – from 60 to 74 years old, the category of old – from 75 to 89 years old, the category of long-livers – 90 years and above .
The food of the elderly should contain sufficient amounts of proteins, vitamins and salts, especially calcium, potassium and iron. Older people should eat more often and little by little, 4-5 times a day. Daily fat intake should be reduced to 60-70 g. It is better to use high-quality vegetable oils with unsaturated fatty acids (sunflower, corn, soy), which help reduce blood cholesterol, which is the prevention of premature aging of blood vessels. For the same reasons, the consumption of egg yolk, pork, and especially products from it should be limited. Don’t eat fried food!
At the same time as reducing fat intake, increase protein intake, especially from animals. The norm for men is 85, for women – 75 g per day. The menu should often include lean meat, cottage cheese, cheeses, milk and dairy products. An elderly person can eat egg white in unlimited quantities, yolks – no more than 2 times a week. 300 g of normalized milk per day provides sufficient calcium. You should limit the consumption of sugar, concentrated sweet foods, sugary drinks. For dessert, it is better to eat vegetables and fruits, since the fiber they contain promotes intestinal motility, and vitamin C breaks down cholesterol into bile acids. The body also receives mineral salts from vegetables, such as potassium, which is especially needed by people with cardiovascular diseases and those who take medication. A valuable source of vitamin C and potassium is potatoes, which should be preferred over rice and pasta.
It is a mistake to consume more bread than it should be. The menu of an elderly person should alternate meat, flour and vegetable dishes in order to satisfy the biological needs of the body. For example, a meat dish should be served as a side dish with vegetables or fresh vegetable salads. An elderly person can normally add salt to food, if he does not suffer from high blood pressure and swelling.

Help
The coronavirus pandemic has hit the elderly hardest. A worn-out organism is not able to resist infection, and pneumonia is deadly for the elderly! So it turns out that about 8 0% of deaths worldwide occur in people aged 80 years.
The average age of the beneficiaries of the Social Security Fund, which we support, is even higher! For them, the regime of self-isolation is vital.
This means that people have lost the opportunity to visit our charity canteen. And for the vast majority, it was the only opportunity to get a full hot meal.
The dining room, like the entire community center, was closed due to quarantine. But she did not stop working !
We have previously had wards who did not leave the house for health reasons. We brought them home with meals.
Due to the quarantine, all the Charity Nutrition programs have been housebound. That’s over 5,000 people!
Of course, Shaare Zedek could not leave them alone. Now we deliver meals to everyone who used to get them in the canteen. We also expanded the project and began to additionally deliver food low-income families with children.
The charity canteen prepares about 90,275,600 set meals daily. This is a dietary, easy to digest, tasty and healthy food, so necessary for the elderly. To be able to deliver meals to all those in need, we had to expand the fleet, hire new drivers and couriers.
As a result of the current situation with the need to attract new personnel, as well as expand delivery zones and provide personal protective equipment – today costs are above the Fund’s regular budget, and we are in dire need of additional funding.
Each, albeit small, but regular donation will help support the elderly who have no relatives. There is no one else to take care of them, and we cannot allow people who have given their whole lives to society to be abandoned and forgotten in old age.
