School-Age Child Care | Childcare.gov

There are various options for before- and afterschool care for your school-age child (also known as out-of-school-time care). Child care centers and family child care homes may offer this type of care. Recreation centers, places of worship, and youth programs, including organizations such as the Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCA, and 21st Century Community Learning Centers may also offer before-and afterschool programs.

Additionally, in many communities, local schools provide afterschool care or hire another agency to provide onsite care before and after school. These programs are convenient for families since transportation is not an issue. Contact your child’s elementary school to find out whether an onsite program is available.

Depending on the rules in your state, before- and afterschool care programs may or may not be required to be licensed. Licensing does not guarantee quality; however, it sets minimum standards and ensures that programs are monitored for compliance with these standards.

States have a child care search which can help you determine if the providers you are considering are licensed. You can search for detailed information about providers in your state and find more information about your state’s child care requirements by using the search feature of this website. Just click this link, See Your State’s Resources, select your state under “Get Child Care Resources.” You will then see a variety of links to state specific information including “Inspection Reports” and “Child Care Regulations” information for your state.

Tips for Choosing This Type of Care

  • If before- and afterschool care programs are required to be licensed in your state, ask to see a copy of the program’s license, registration or certification, and inspection history.

  • Most states post inspection reports online. Use the See Your State’s Resources feature on this website to see inspection reports of child care providers you are considering. These reports provide valuable information about the quality of child care programs. Check them before you select a program and regularly while your child is enrolled.

  • Ask how many adults and children are in each group of children.

  • Make sure that each staff person has received training on important health and safety topics such as first aid and CPR, giving children medication, and child development. Learn more about the 12 health and safety trainings that all adults caring for children should have.

  • Ask about the daily schedule, enrichment activities, support for children doing homework, and whether a healthy meal or snack is provided.

  • Confirm that every adult working or volunteering in the program has had a comprehensive background check.

  • Get a copy of the provider’s policies and contract. These documents should cover important topics, including hours of operation, rates, fees, field trip permission slips, transportation agreements, and absence policies. Read more about recommended items that should be included in a child care contract.

  • Ask about the program’s policies for days that school is out of session for breaks or bad weather.

  • Print a list of questions and things to look for that you can take with you when visiting potential before- and afterschool care programs.

What are the advantages of leaving school after the 9th grade.

Modern school education is undergoing major changes. Schoolchildren and their parents were given the right to choose: study for 11 years and enter the university or leave school after 9 years of study. There are pluses to leaving after the 9th grade – schoolchildren begin to study in their chosen specialty without wasting time at school.

Reasons to leave school

Schoolchildren are more likely to leave school, there are many reasons for this.

The need to pass the exam, many parents consider these exams useless. There is a reason for this: the USE is passed in the form of tests, graduates lose their creative approach to the educational process. After the 9th grade, the student immediately begins to master the profession. In this paragraph, we should add the uncertainty of preparing for the state exam. Every year there are rumors about changes in this system, about the introduction of compulsory exams in a foreign language and literature into the program.

Poor performance at school is also a good reason to leave. In grades 10-11, the school curriculum becomes more complicated. Teachers prepare students for the exam, you need to study in depth the subjects in which the exam is being held. Students who have already lost interest in the school curriculum will not be able to do this, they will only lose time.

Schoolchildren have less confidence in higher education. An unattractive picture emerges in front of them – their comrades who graduated from universities cannot get a job. They are not hired for positions due to poor preparation at the university. At the same time, the guys notice that it is possible to earn good money even without a university diploma. An example is the success of bloggers, the activities of businessmen who have not received any education.

Advantages of the solution

Note the benefits of care after 9-th grade:

  • an opportunity to save time, in two years of schooling you can master a profession in demand and start working. After college, there is an opportunity to enter the second or third year of the university;
  • lack of funds for education at the university. It is known that leading universities set too high a bar for tuition fees. Where education is inexpensive, there is almost always poor preparation, there is no material and experimental base, teachers aged 60+ work;
  • students are interested in the approach to learning that is used in vocational schools. Teaching methods are approaching university methods, students are given more freedom, there is a creative approach to the profession.

While studying in college, guys can go to work in their specialty. Thus, they will be financially secure, there will be no need to constantly take money from their parents.

Disadvantages of the decision

Disadvantages of the decision to leave school after 9there are quite a lot of classes:

  • guys have not yet decided on their professional activities, and most of them are like that. At the age of 15-16, it is difficult to do this. Such students can be recommended to finish the 11th grade;
  • many study areas are presented only in universities. To enter a certain specialty, you need to complete 11 classes;
  • know how difficult it is for young people to get a job. Employers now have a choice. Often representatives of successful companies refuse applicants for a place if they do not have a university diploma;
  • scholarships in colleges are much less than in universities.

Where to go to study

Many secondary vocational schools, colleges and technical schools are open for school graduates. Children can choose humanitarian or technical directions. In college, you can get the prestigious profession of a cosmetologist, fashion designer, become an auto mechanic, designer, cook. Educational institutions teach banking and logistics. Graduates of the 9th grade are admitted to the departments of publishing and jurisprudence.

Whether or not to leave the school walls is up to the students and their parents to decide. If you have decided on a profession, do not want to take the exam and pay for higher education, then you can leave school to go to college.

Should I leave school and go to college after 9th grade?

Every ninth grader is faced with the question: should I go to college after the 9th grade, or should I continue my studies at school? In order to decide and make a decision, we recommend the following.

Weigh the pros and cons

Someone divides a sheet of paper in two and writes down the pros and cons. Others, when choosing a college or 10th grade, weigh the arguments in their minds. Arguments can accumulate a great many, and each of them has its own. We will only touch on the most significant ones.

You have nothing to lose!

When answering the question of whether it is worth leaving school after the 9th grade, we will immediately make a reservation: you are not leaving school! Having decided to enter a college or technical school, you only complete your studies directly within the walls of the school in order to continue it already in a professionally oriented educational institution.

You have the opportunity to start an independent life and career earlier than your peers!

You will have a diploma of secondary vocational education in your hands when your peers have just completed the 1st year of the institute. You will be a graduate while your classmates are students! And this means that you have a real chance to start a professional career much earlier than those who continued their studies at school after 9class.

More chances to enter a university!

When choosing a college or grade 10, many students are sure that after receiving a certificate of secondary (complete) education, they are more likely to enter universities. Unfortunately, 11 classes do not at all guarantee admission to higher educational institutions. Moreover, under equal conditions, the admissions committee is more likely to give preference to someone who enters the institute after college.

… and graduate in just 3 years!

Those who decide to go to college after 9th grade and then graduate have the opportunity to graduate from college in a shorter time frame. Thus, graduates of the Law College of the Russian State University of Justice receive a higher economic or legal education in a shortened time – in just 3 years! Upon graduation, you will have two diplomas in your hands: on secondary vocational education and on higher education. And if, in parallel with your main studies, you took the correspondence program of the University of London, then you are a real world-class specialist with diplomas from prestigious Russian and most famous Western universities! This is your competitive advantage.

You can combine work and study

Perhaps many will now object that every student can combine work and study. And we agree with you. But while some study at a law school and work, for example, as waiters in a restaurant (we do not diminish the importance of this profession, pointing only to its non-core for a future lawyer or economist), others who have a college diploma in their hands are already starting to build a professional career. Graduates of our college successfully work in state authorities, advocacy, well-known Russian and even global companies.

The most ridiculous reasons for refusing to go to college

When considering whether to go to college after 9th grade, students often justify their categorical “no, you shouldn’t” with completely ridiculous excuses, among which are the following:

“College or 10th grade ? Of course school! But what about the graduation ball, which should be remembered for a lifetime?!”

Firstly, graduation is arranged even after the 9th grade. Secondly, college graduation is no less bright and memorable! And, thirdly, there can be as many graduations as you like in your life. After graduating from college, many will also have to graduate from the university after receiving higher education.

“After 9th grade, only those who do poorly in school go to college”

Just a far-fetched stereotype! Today, a huge number of excellent students and good students who have managed to appreciate the prospects of secondary vocational education are entering colleges and technical schools. Now the labor market is in demand for those who started to master the profession earlier.

“Completing 11th grade is prestigious! After all, then you can immediately enter a university”

The question of such prestige is very controversial. Colleges train specialists in specific (and quite in demand) areas, while schools provide only secondary, non-professional education. And you can get a higher education after college in a shorter time.
