Introduction

In our time, the promotion and popularization of knowledge about nature and plants in particular is becoming extremely important. If plants disappear, then the proud crown of nature – man with his scientific and technical progress will quietly leave the arena of life in a few weeks. And the sooner a person gets the first experience of knowing the nature around him, the more conscious will be his attitude towards it. The formation of the ecological culture of a modern person cannot be carried out only by textbooks; live communication with nature will not replace the Internet. In winter, we are almost completely deprived of the opportunity to communicate with green plants. Therefore problem of creating a winter garden is actual. If the school has a winter garden, then these losses can be replenished. We continue to work on the implementation of the project: the creation of a winter garden at school.

The purpose of the project is to create a winter garden in the school.

To achieve this goal, the following tasks were defined :

1. Select and prepare a room for the winter garden.

2. Select plants for their consistent use in school gardening and sale to the public. nine0003

3. Turn the winter garden into a relaxation room.

4. Organize excursions for children, parents and guests.

5. Conduct design and research work on the basis of the Winter Garden.

We put forward the hypothesis : if a winter garden operates in the school, then on its basis it is possible to carry out diverse design and research work, use it as a study room and an office for relaxation, to develop the environmental competence of students. nine0003

Project participants: students, teachers and parents of our school.

The main forms of organization of work are:

  • practical training in caring for indoor plants;

  • compiling a catalog of winter garden plants

  • design and aesthetic decoration of the room.

Parents and villagers joined the project. At one of the parent-teacher meetings, the action “Give a flower to the school” was announced. Parents willingly responded to this and carried it to school: some – a flower, some – a planter, and some – both. Within 3-4 months, a room for a winter garden was equipped, plants were selected and collected for more than six months. Library literature, Internet resources, various magazines and encyclopedias about indoor floriculture were used. Research work was carried out on the conditions for placing plants in the winter garden (shade-tolerant and light-loving). We started compiling a catalog of winter garden plants. nine0003

Main part

From the history of the winter garden in Russia

Like most innovations, the history of winter gardens in Russia should start from the time of Peter the Great. Under him, well-heated rooms appeared with large windows, in which plants, outlandish for Russia, grew in winter – palm trees. In the summer they were taken outside. Already in the middle of the 18th century, a winter greenhouse garden was built in St. Petersburg.

The concept of “winter garden” came into use quite recently. Although in pre-revolutionary Russia, free-standing greenhouses and winter gardens were almost an invariable attribute of every noble estate. In Soviet times, there was only one winter garden in the country – in the Kremlin Palace of Congresses. nine0147

Features of creating a winter garden.

Forms and methods of placing plants.

Creating a winter garden in rooms not intended for this is a rather complicated undertaking. The room should be oriented to the south. And when planting plants, it is important to distribute them in relation to the light (Internet resources). nine0003

The main thing in the design and construction of a winter garden is decorative attractiveness, comfort, comparability and arrangement of plants.

Many people don’t remember that there was a physics room instead of the winter garden. It was necessary to clean the premises: wash and insulate the windows, decorate the walls. Next, it was necessary to select and purchase and prepare pots, planters, drainage, soil. The flowers were grown in the classrooms of biology, primary classes, were waiting for relocation to the winter garden. This is where some of the knowledge gained in biology lessons came in handy. Communities need to be made up of plants. The idea was this: to distribute the plants in parts of the world, in the territory of which they grow in natural

conditions. But I had to do it differently, as the room turned out to be small in size. It was decided to distinguish between light-loving and shade-tolerant plants.

The design will only be competent if the “light lovers” are settled near the window, and the rest of the inhabitants of the winter garden in more shaded places. Places where sunlight practically does not penetrate, it is better to take artificial plants in general, which we did.

The basis of the garden – deciduous – ornamental plants that decorate the interior all year round. (photo1) A tenth of them can be flowers. They are beautiful, but their flowering period is limited. Climbing plants in various types of hanging planters also look decorative. We used plants that have the most attractive foliage as a background for the winter garden (photo2). You can’t argue with the reasonableness of this approach: the most comfortable color for the human eye is the color of healthy living greenery. So even if you love flowering plants, the winter garden should be based on decorative foliage plants. Tropical plants are good for the winter garden: palm trees, ficuses, dracaena, philodendrons. nine0003

But decorating a winter garden is not only about working with plants.

Winter garden accessories…

Other elements of nature also look great in the winter garden – spectacular driftwood, pebbles, stones, (photo3) wall decoration with light-colored fabric. Pots – ordinary buckets (plastic) from food products, decorated in the style of “Decoupage”. The flowers are made of fleece and knitting threads in a vase woven from newspaper tubes. nine0003

We used some decoration methods: the walls were dark and we decided to decorate with light-colored fabric, flower pots from unsuitable shades (matte color), as well as plastic buckets of various capacities decorated using the Decoupage technique (photos 6,7). We decorated one of the protruding corners of the room by placing a tall tree-like plant nearby – a hibiscus or a Chinese rose, and hanging a “braid” woven from an onion.

Plants with climbing and clinging stems are well decorated: various varieties of tradescantia, modest but very popular chlorophytums. We learned that chlorophytums with small white flowers purify the air very well, and most importantly decorate the interior with dignity. They planted a date palm. The most beautiful Euphorbia grows next to it. It will be necessary to study more carefully the peculiarities of agricultural technology of many plants in the winter garden. A native of Europe and Asia – lemon. nine0003

Unpretentious in growing geraniums, amazing with a variety of leaf blades, differing both in the shape of the edge and in color, which will be useful in biology lessons in the 6th grade. With proper care, these plants can delight us with elegant flowers all year round (which is very important), they are widely used in traditional medicine. We have a dream – to breed different varieties of begonias. Did you know that the name of the genus comes from the name of a great lover and collector of plants M. Begon, who lived in the 17th century in San Domingo. Begonia has been known in Russia for a long time. After the flight of the French from Moscow in 1812, it received the name – “Napoleon’s ear”. Indeed, in outline from the lower red side, the begonia leaf looks like a

frostbitten ear. We are going to create a small cactus garden. The definition of names will delight us with its curly monstera leaves. Thus, it is obvious: we have worked out a sufficient amount of literature, accumulating knowledge about the systematics of plants, about caring for them, about placing them in the winter garden.

Plant care.

We remember that a garden is not just an element of decor, but a living organism. For independent care of a large number of plants, you need not only a sufficient amount of free time, but also special knowledge. Each type of plant needs its own watering regimen and regular transplantation, there are plants that need to be sprayed regularly and always with warm water. In order for the inhabitants of the winter garden to delight us with their healthy appearance, it is necessary to regularly apply top dressing and fertilizers – of course, strictly defined ones. If the plant is sick, it, like any other creature, needs qualified “ambulance” help. Alas, one – the only plant on which pests have settled, can cause illness to all other inhabitants of the winter garden. A large amount of literature on plant care was reviewed, and the Internet helped. Small flies appeared on dieffenbachia, it turned out that it was a whitefly, I had to use a Chinese white pencil: they sprinkled the soil and smeared the pot. Helped. nine0003

Houseplants can be problematic because of the temperatures they are tolerant to in winter. It is best to strive to create as stable temperature conditions as possible. Drafts are very dangerous for indoor plants, creating the same problems as sudden temperature fluctuations. From them, a rapid fall of leaves can begin.

FEEDING IS THE MOST IMPORTANT!

– Most plants (especially cacti) love sugar. Before watering, sprinkle one teaspoon of sugar over the surface of the soil or water the plant with an already prepared solution at the rate of 0.5 tsp. sugar in 0.5 cups of water. nine0003

– Fertilizing with castor oil gives a good effect: 1 tsp. per 1 liter of water during the setting of buds.

– Wood ash is used both as a top dressing and for the prevention of diseases: 1 tbsp. l. ash pour 1 liter of hot water, leave for about a week. Water the plants with this solution once every 10 days.

– For watering plants, you can use the peels of pomegranates or any citrus fruits: pour water and soak for a day.

– Violets like this top dressing: an ampoule of vitamin B12, diluted in 1 liter of water. Feed violets like this 2 times a month. nine0003

– Infusion of mushrooms will help plants look healthy and beautiful. It is necessary to soak the chopped edible mushrooms with water in a ratio of 1: 1. After a day, drain the water and fill it with a new one. A day later, mushroom water is ready. Mushroom trimmings can be used when sorted.

– To maintain the immunity of indoor plants, spraying with aspirin solution (1 tablet per 1 liter of water) is suitable.

– During plant transplantation, banana peels can be used as top dressing, which is rich in potassium, magnesium and phosphorus. Lay a layer of finely chopped or minced banana peel on the drainage layer, fill it with soil and transplant the plant. nine0003

Most plants do not need to be fertilized in winter, as a large number of them are dormant. The nutrient requirements of plants are low. But at the same time, some types of plants need winter feeding, including cyclamens, that is, all those that form flowers at this time. You can feed once every two to four weeks to avoid an excess of salts in the soil, remembering that salts accumulate quickly in winter. Leaves are a big problem. In winter, brown spots often appear on the leaves – desiccation, or desiccation, the leaf tissue dies off. The usual reason for this is the increased high dryness of the ambient air. Plants such as ferns, dracaena most often suffer from this, although thick-leaved plants, such as monstera, can dry out. The problem can be alleviated by increasing the level of air humidity: turn on a small fountain, spray the leaves. nine0003

What else do you need to know? A few words about pests. Fortunately, in winter, pests are not such a big problem, although red spider mites, scale insects, and mealybugs can remain active, but less than in warmer months. In general, the higher the temperature, the more active the pests. We have learned that whiteflies can cause problems on some plants, and again this is very pronounced at high temperatures. Despite their relatively low activity,

pest control at this time of the year as well, as this can help solve similar problems in the spring. We were convinced of this by saving Dieffenbachia and Coleus.

So, each fragment of the garden is a separate composition, but together they form a single whole.

The use of wall painting, the presence of birds will enhance the feeling of a natural garden. But the birds are expensive with the cage. Therefore, at first we used the recordings of bird voices on a tape recorder. The feeling of beauty, as in the morning forest, from all sides the cheerful chirping of birds. We recommend that you do something similar. nine0003

Conclusion

Caring for plants requires a lot of time, and, most importantly, certain knowledge and skills. But the pleasure derived from staying in exotic surroundings, the peculiar aura created by living plants, especially against the backdrop of a snow-covered garden outside the window, are worth the time and effort spent. The Russian climate is inexorable: we see living greenery only for three months a year. And residents of big cities, even in summer, still need to find this greenery in the world of glass and concrete. That is why the theme of the winter garden – your own, personal piece of wildlife – is becoming more and more relevant. The Winter Garden is a place where you can relax, unwind and forget about all the momentary difficulties. The abundance of greenery in winter is the most comfortable mode of rest and relaxation. We encourage you to create winter gardens not only in offices, but also at home, and, of course, in schools. We are now tirelessly working on the improvement and improvement of the green miracle – the garden at the school. nine0003

The formation of an ecological culture is one of the most important requirements for the comprehensive development of a person’s personality. And here the role of extracurricular work is great. many parents, teachers, students, guests have already visited our garden. Excursions were held for teachers from other schools who attended open events at our school. The opinion is unequivocal: beautiful, great, good! Pupils in grades 5-8 continue to improve the garden, in the future we will try to create a florarium, we have begun to compile a catalog of indoor plants. In the winter garden, we also grow seedlings of flower and some vegetable crops, followed by planting on the school site and selling them to the population. nine0076 Perspective. During the summer, we will work with the teacher on duty at the school camp in the winter garden, conduct tours of the winter garden and the ecological trail. The winter garden will be the first step on the ecological path. Winter garden – study room!

Our ancestors believed that flowering plants are something mysterious, mystical, divine. Flowers became symbols of human feelings, destinies, qualities … They deserve the attention that we pay to them, and the enthusiasm of amateur flower growers is quite understandable. The Winter Garden is another of the peaks, to which we walked for a long time and finally overcame it. We are proud that we have it and invite you to visit our winter garden. nine0003

Project “Winter Garden” – SCHOOL OF PROJECTS

Project catalog‎ > ‎

w3.org/1999/xhtml” align=”left”>
Project “Winter Garden”

It so happened that during the summer a few flowers died in the school,
who grew up in the hallway. Children immediately noticed this, because this area
corridor is the subject of their pride – there hangs a panel made on
technology lessons last year through the efforts of students in grades 2-3 ( school has
1 class in each parallel)
. During the class hour the teacher returned
to the question of flowers, and the students expressed a number of ideas: greening the corridor,
creating a living corner, making artificial flowers for decoration. nine0003

These ideas
so strongly “infected” the elementary school that teachers began to think through
its basis is design intent. In the end all the children and teachers 2, 3, 4
classes gathered, and third grade students expressed their idea of creating a living
a corner in which there should have been flowers, an aquarium and hamsters.
The students justified their idea as follows: “To make it beautiful, interesting … To study
fish at recess… Dull, lifeless corridors…” ( the color of the walls in this
the corridor is really not too cheerful
).

The teacher outlined the overall picture of the work and invited the students to split up
for the groups “Aquarium”, “Aviary for hamsters” and “Winter Garden”, which will work
offline.

B
given age, suggestions for steps to be taken during
project may come from the teacher.

The question of what the product of the project will be was raised periodically. On
general meeting, the teacher told the Winter Garden group about the scope of work: we will
plant plants, breed them, etc. During the first meeting, the teacher
organized a discussion of tasks and resources. It was very difficult for the students
imagine “what the winter garden will be like, what plants will be like.” Therefore, we put
task: prepare sketches and discuss them. The second task is to select plants –
was proposed by the children after a heated discussion about what should
grow up in the school corridor. The third and fourth followed from the teacher’s story about
the scope of work: pick up the soil, “multiply and plant plants.” nine0003

During the discussion, the question arose as to who would care for
plants in the summer, and a decision was made on it.

The teacher suggested criteria for evaluating the product: must be selected and
planted “those flowers that are suitable for the corridor, they must be correctly
planted in pots, the earth must be selected as needed, the plants must be
different. During the discussion, the students themselves set the criterion:
plants that are not in the school. nine0003

An oral evaluation of the project was given according to these criteria. He was rated
collaboratively: students doing the project, teachers, other students
elementary school.

Product
was praised because “the winter garden turned out to be beautiful, everything was
done right.” However, the design was not made according to the sketch, although
sketches were created. Students also expressed during the planning stage
a proposal to draw up and hang in the winter garden a map of the origin of indoor
plants, but this was not done because “the map itself was not in their possession”. nine0003

Follow
note that, in addition to the “high appreciation”, in this case it was necessary
pay more attention to the comparison of planned and received
product, invite students to independently determine the causes of difficulties and
failures.

When drawing up an action plan, the teacher did not set a rigid framework, but led
children in a certain way. For example, in connection with the discussion of tasks, students
came to the problem of resources: the question arose of where to get the plants. students
offered to buy them in the store. The teacher offered to find out the prices, and the children
“we saw that it was expensive”, and during the next meeting they offered to take the shoots
at home, with friends, etc. nine0003

Work plan
compiled jointly, but temporary
no boundaries were specified. The children themselves followed the implementation of the plan. Were wound up
“special diaries”, which described the progress of work according to the plan. Plan in progress
activities have been corrected.

B
In general, during this project, students often encountered a lack of resources,
and the teacher very correctly led them to actions on the analysis of resources.
It should be noted that the analysis of resources is usually carried out by students for more
a high level of formation of problem-solving competence (as well as the current
control, with which the students, apparently, in this case coped). AT
elementary school teacher may well take on direct informing
students about resource constraints. nine0027

The students made a table on “Indoor Plant Conditions” for
in order to understand which plants should be planted. First the teacher with the children
went through all the classrooms of the school, wrote down the names of plants, made a table
in the form given by the teacher. The students then completed this form by including plants,
which were not at school, but could be found with fellow villagers. Students chose
the most shade-tolerant plants and thus “decided on the varieties
plants for the corridor. nine0003

Follow
note that the teacher clearly set himself the task of forming
information competence. In working with information, he provided
students of experience 1) establishing links between objects described verbally
or presented graphically, and objects of the surrounding world, 2) translation
information from one form

The search for land took place in two stages: first, the students found out from
proposed by the teacher of literature, what lands are needed for the selected
plants, and then the teacher organized an excursion during which students
“recognized and recruited the land of the required quality.” nine0003

Propagation and transplantation of plants occurred after the demonstration
necessary actions by the teacher, and then in the presence of the teacher.

For
the design of the winter garden, the students “brought a stick – a thin trunk, and wanted
hang pots of flowers on it. ” The teacher noticed that the stick would not fit on
the role of a whatnot, but did not say it directly, but asked questions, leading to
thoughts, “that the stick may not stand, it will be ugly.” In the end, when
the students began to hang pots, the stick fell, and the children concluded that
the need for calculations. The director allocated money for which they purchased
bookcase and flower pots. “The kids got excited and used them.” nine0003

tasks.

During operation
setting tasks, the teacher, apparently, missed the task related to the actual
the design of the winter garden, so the way out is through actions
director was possible (students did not plan to cook with their own hands
design elements). It is also important that the teacher allowed the students to make
error and analyze its causes, since it was not related to
violation of safety regulations and provided interesting food for thought. nine0027

The material of the project “did not directly link” with the material of the lessons.
Third graders have already studied the topic “Plant Reproduction”, second graders –
“Plant Transplantation”.

First few
the teacher offered books about indoor flowers from the home library. However, they
were not provided with photographs of plants, and when students tried
characterize the discovered plant according to a given table, they encountered
with difficulties. Then the teacher, recalling what else should be learned about
soils, sent them to the village library with instructions to find information from
with the help of a librarian or using your own experience that you already had
older children. A preliminary agreement was reached with the librarian
that it will show how to search for the necessary information in the collections
magazines. Thus, the students “processed the journal” Young Naturalist “for
some years”. nine0003

To
to acquaint other members of the group with the results of their work, the students sketched
plants. Thus, the idea of “his own flower” arose, which each student
chose, described on several sheets the conditions of his detention, sketched and
planted.

When transplanting plants and finding the right soil, the teacher himself spoke
source of information.

Ability
follow technology (instructions) is also an important element
information competence, formed at this age. nine0027

The group discussion was mostly organized by the teacher, sometimes by one
The student is the clear leader in the group. During the discussions, the students agreed on
distribution of responsibilities. Some work was done together (a hike for
ground), some – individually or in small groups (landing after
how students learned to plant plants, collecting information about flowers that
bred by fellow villagers).
