Schools near me for 4 year olds: Preschool Programs for Ages 3
How to Register Your 4-Year-Old for School in Boston
In the City of Boston, it’s never too early to think about school options for your child. Whether you’re interested in public, charter, or private school options, many schools accept students as young as 4 years old, and some even as young as 3 years old.
In Boston, these earliest learners have their own pre-K grades grouped by age: K0 for 3-year-olds and K1 for 4-year-olds. (K2 is the grade commonly associated with a traditional kindergarten grade for entering 5-year-old students).
Why You Should Register Your 3- or 4-Year-Old for School
This age group is also one of the largest entry points into Boston Public Schools, meaning there is a large number of 4-year-olds all trying to get seats into great-fit schools. Thus, it’s critical to register your 4-year-old for every school option available to your family.
Remember: you can register your child for any school seat they get in Boston, but that doesn’t mean you have to enroll your child at the school they received a seat. At Boston School Finder, we like to remind families that you can always turn down a seat you receive, but you can’t turn down a seat you don’t have.
In addition to K0 and K1 options via BPS, Boston has also made a commitment to offer UPK—Universal Pre-Kindergarten—seats for children who are 4 years old. While the number of UPK seats can be limited, the City announced in April 2019 it had committed $15 million to create an additional 750 high-quality UPK seats in Boston for 4-year-olds for the 2020-2021 school year.
Seats in Boston’s UPK program are FREE to Boston families and serviced by Community Based Organizations (CBOs). Participating UPK programs align with existing BPS curriculum and standards for K1 seats at BPS schools; teachers at participating CBOs are also trained and certified in this curriculum.
How to Register Your 4-Year-Old for School in Boston
Choosing a great-fit school for your child is one of the most important decisions you can make as a parent—and we believe it’s important families get their child into a great-fit school as early as they can. Read on for how to register and apply to all of the options available for 4-year-olds in Boston.
In Boston Public Schools
Currently, there are 78 BPS schools that offer K1 seats for students who will be 4 years old by Sep. 1, 2020. As there are a limited number of K0 and K1 seats available, we recommend every family with a 4-year-old register for a K1 BPS seat during their Priority Registration round.
For Grades K0 and K1, families must register by Friday, Jan. 31, 2020 to qualify for BPS Priority Registration.
(Families can still register for K0 and K1 seats after the deadline, but it is highly unlikely there will be seats left if they do.)
At UPK Community-Based Organizations
There are a limited number of FREE seats for 4-year-olds throughout Boston as part of the UPK program.
To enroll your child at a UPK-affiliated CBO for the 2020-2021 school year:
- Your child must be 4 years old by Sep. 1, 2020.
- Complete this UPK Interest Form online.
- Contact Joelle Auguste, Boston UPK Family Engagement & Comprehensive Services Manager for Boston Public Schools, to discuss your available UPK options. Her email is [email protected] and her phone number is 617-635-9063.
- To learn more about Boston’s UPK program, please visit the Boston Public Schools Department of Early Childhood website.
At Commonwealth Charter Schools
Currently, there are 6 Commonwealth Charter schools that offer K1 seats for 4-year-olds. These are free, public schools that are not part of the Boston Public Schools district.
Placement at Commonwealth Charter schools is determined by lottery.
To apply for the Charter School Lottery, families must complete the Charter School Lottery Application online by Saturday, Feb. 29, 2020.
Most charter schools run their lotteries and post results on Friday, Mar. 6, 2020. (Please check our School Registration Enrollment Calendar for individual charter school lottery dates.)
At Private Religious-Affiliated Schools
There are at least 18 private religious schools that offer seats for 4-year-olds; many Catholic schools have seats for 3-year-old children and younger.
Also known as parochial schools, Boston has a number of private religious-affiliated schools, including a large number of Catholic schools. While private religious-affiliated schools cost money to attend, many of these schools offer financial aid and/or scholarships to students. Some Catholic schools are free or offer subsidized, income-dependent tuition.
To register and enroll your 4-year-old at one of these schools, please contact individual schools directly. You can use our School Finder tool to get their contact information.
Prekindergarten | Garland Independent School District
Why Pre-K?
Pre-K programs offer many benefits. 90% of your child’s brain develops before they are five years old. Our Pre-K program takes advantage of this important time to learn. We provide foundational education that helps prepare your child for kindergarten. Research has shown that kids who attend Pre-K are less likely to be held back a grade and more likely to graduate from high school.
About the program
Our Pre-K classes are taught by certified teachers who are trained in early childhood education and development. They have the knowledge and skills needed to teach your child at this very important age.
Your child will learn:
-
to recognize colors, shapes, letters, and numbers
-
important social skills like how to pay attention in class and interact with other children
-
listening and speaking skills
-
early reading skills like how to hold a book, turn the pages, and look at pictures
-
basic math skills such as counting and measuring
Your child will also develop skills in science, social studies, fine arts and physical development for a balanced education. The curriculum taught uses research and follows a state-mandated curriculum.
Which schools offer Pre-K classes?
We have two dedicated prekindergarten centers and 27 elementary schools that offer Pre-K classes in a full-day format. Some schools offer regular general education with ESL, some offer bilingual education, and some schools offer both.
We also have a Montessori magnet program at Luna ES and Herfurth ES that includes classes for Pre-K-aged children. Interested families may consider applying and paying to enroll. Specific timelines must be met to apply for magnet programs.

FAQs

How are the Pre-K centers different?
The Pre-K centers were designed and built specifically for four-year-old children. These centers do not have students in any other grades. The library, gym, bathrooms and lockers are all specially sized for Pre-K children.
In addition, we have a partnership with the Child Care Group Head Start program at our Pre-K Centers with two GISD/Head Start classrooms, one GenEd/ESL and one Bilingual, each center.
What time are the classes?
Our full-day Pre-K program shares the same hours and calendar as our elementary schools, 8:10 a.m.-3:20 p.m.
Can you choose which Pre-K your child goes to?
You may select up to three Pre-K schools as your top choices. At the time of enrollment, a Student Services staff member or a campus data clerk will assist you in completing enrollment for the school with seat availability.
Is transportation provided?
Transportation is not provided. You are responsible for transporting your child to and from school.
Many parents get help from family members or choose to coordinate drop-off and pick-up with their child’s daycare.
How does eligibility work?
Though we welcome all students to our Pre-K program, seats are limited. Students who meet priority placement eligibility get placed in seats first. Empty seats after priority placement will be distributed to non-priority placement students as available.

Preschool – Chicago School Options
All CPS Preschool programs will now apply via the Spring Chicago Early Learning website. Families looking to apply to Suder & Drummond CPS Montessori Magnet programs for PK3 & PK4 will need to wait until Spring 2023 to apply via the Chicago Early Learning site. This was not “announced” so much as “revealed” when the GoCPS application opened on Sept 21 and families could not apply to either school’s preschool programs through the main GoCPS elementary application. Look for more info this Spring. You can still apply for their K-8th grade seats via GoCPS.

Chicago Public Schools are now accepting applications for the 2022-2023 school year until Dec. 15, 2021. Families can explore https://go.cps.edu/ to learn about the school options and request an account at https://cps.schoolmint.com/login. One account per family and each student can be added as they become eligible to apply to CPS programs. A CPS Student ID can be requested through the portal for any student not already in the CPS system.
Always apply one year before a program begins, and CPS has a Sept 1st cutoff date to be eligible for preschool through 1st grade programs. An “age exception” is provided only for families with a fall birthday child who wants to start K or 1st grade early.
You do NOT have to apply to your assigned neighborhood school and there is never a deadline to register at your neighborhood school. For all other programs, including a neighborhood school that is not your own, CPS allows for “Open Enrollment” and you can apply to programs for which your student is age-eligible or meets a pre-requisite via a GoCPS CHOICE (up to 20 lottery or minimal criteria based admission programs) and/or SEES (up to 6 ranked test based admission programs) application. Read more about CPS school types here: Elementary and High School.
Scoring rubrics have been updated for this application cycle to reflect the discontinuation of NWEA MAP testing for 5th through 9th grade programs. There are no scoring rubrics and no cutoffs will be posted for K-8th grade Classical or Regional Gifted Center Selective Enrollment programs.
- CPS Elementary programs: only 7th grade Academic Centers have a scoring rubric listed HERE.
- CPS High School programs have scoring rubrics listed HERE, including Selective Enrollment, IB, CTE, Service Academies, etc.

Round 1 CPS Elementary Notifications were posted in the GoCPS portal for Choice (lottery) and/or Selective Enrollment (test based) selections. Students could be offered multiple Choice program offers but only ONE selective enrollment offer. A family’s neighborhood school is always guaranteed.
Choice elementary offers are based on a lottery selection process and include magnet, magnet cluster (neighborhood w/focus area) and open enrollment (other neighborhood) schools. Drummond, Suder and Inter-American preschool programs are included in Choice schools. CPS Tiers and proximity are only considered for the entry year of a magnet program. All other programs conduct a general lottery (in some cases, a sibling lottery).
Selective enrollment elementary offers are based on entrance testing and include Classical & Regional Gifted Centers (K or 1st through 8th), as well as Academic Centers (7th/8th). CPS Tiers are only considered for the entry year of these programs and offers are “single offer” only, based on a student’s score.
Details, dates and Academic Center (7th grade) cutoff scores are posted on GoCPS. Helpful GoCPS videos are posted HERE (note: videos are slightly outdated since there are no longer International Gifted programs).
- Round 1 accept/decline deadline is June 11
- Round 1 waitlists open on June 16 (48 hour waitlist decision window)
- Round 2 elementary applications (for programs with unfilled seats) open June 21-25
- Round 2 results released & waitlists open July 16 (48 hour waitlist window)
- Round 2 accept/decline deadline is July 23
New applicants can request a CPS ID to apply to Round 2 (existing applicants do not need new CPS ID). Round 2 applications will open on June 21 for any schools with remaining open seats. Any unfilled seats may also be filled on an as available basis at the end of the summer by contacting a school you are interested in.
Applicant families are encouraged to “tour” schools before decisions are returned.

Chicago Early Learning’s school and community based preschool programs for 4 and 3 year olds (by Sept. 1st birthday) opened its 2021-2022 application on 4/21/21. If parents are interested in these sliding scale tuition programs that prioritize low income and 4 year old students, then visit www. chicagoearlylearning.org or call 312.229.1690 to apply.
Families can choose up to 2 Chicago Public School (CPS) or community based sites. Families should choose programs based on location, hours (most are 7 hours, some are half day) and ages served (most prioritize 4 year olds). School based sites mostly host 4 year olds, while community based sites mostly host 3 year olds.
Applicants who apply within the first 3 weeks of the application opening receive “preferred placement”, then placements are based on a space available, rolling admissions basis.
Helpful FAQs can be found HERE. The application is linked HERE.
Note: CPS based sites do NOT guarantee students can attend that school’s kindergarten program if that is not their neighborhood school.

A message from CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Dear CPS Families,
The pandemic has impacted every aspect of our school year, including the important process our students go through when choosing the school options that will best match their talents, interests, and abilities. So to ensure everyone has the time they need to make this important decision, we are extending the GoCPS application deadline from Friday, December 11, 2020 to Friday, January 8, 2021.
We hope that this added time will give students and families the opportunity they need to carefully consider the many school options that are available throughout the district. As a result of this extension, offers for the 2021-22 school year will come out slightly later than in years past, and we will provide an update with the exact date. In the meantime, we urge our students to look at all of their options, from their neighborhood schools to offerings in STEM, IB, world language, and selective-enrollment, among others, to determine which environment will best meet their needs.
Sincerely,
Janice K. Jackson, EdD LaTanya D. McDade

In addition, many students face problems not only due to shortcomings in schooling, but also due to internal causes: hyperactivity, speech, motor, breathing and many others. Therefore, to help the parents of schoolchildren, we opened the first Speed Reading School IQ007 in Zlatoust in 2009.
Already in 2013, we launched a franchising system and developed a teacher training course. Now our team includes candidates of pedagogical, psychological, philosophical sciences and professional methodologists. Today, we have 850 teachers from Russia and the CIS in our staff. We combined all their experience of working with real children into a single knowledge base.

The dizzying and at the same time absolutely natural success story of the IQ007 school began as a kind joke. After graduation, a lawyer and economist, natives of the Ural outback, did not find anything better than to try their hand at education. The speed reading courses they opened unexpectedly combined tips for personal growth and the secrets of millionaires. Then the plot starts to dance: rapid growth and ruin, entering foreign markets and retreat from plans, masterfully thought-out moves and mistakes of amateurs.

Speed reading methods: what are the differences and how to choose the right one
The speed with which a person performs educational and work tasks directly depends on how fast a person reads. And that means current or future career success.
Speed reading courses are useful and effective at any age. On average, a modern adult reads at a speed of 200-400 words per minute – and methods of teaching speed reading can at least double the rate.

How we teach
Grades 1–4
5–8
9–11
We take into account the peculiarities of attention and development
When developing programs, we focus on age characteristics. For example, in elementary grades, children learn to think logically. To help them, we build chains, compare objects and teach them to find non-standard solutions
We instill interest in learning
To do this, we use practical exercises where you can draw, glue
or play.
We form and consolidate a positive experience from learning – the child solves a problem and receives a reward instead of an assessment
We take into account the peculiarities of learning in each class
For example, we will teach fifth graders to cope with homework on their own in order to free their parents from the daily “joint learning”.
And we will help eighth graders with the choice of subjects to take
at the OGE next year
You will understand the material, not memorize it
In our classes there is no senseless rewriting from the textbook: teachers explain complex things in simple language until until you really get the point.
And everything you need to remember, we will help you put it in your head easily and quickly with the help of mnemonics ✌️
We guarantee admission
We help you decide on the direction of study at the university and prepare for final exams – without stress.
Designed the program so that you have more time to calmly prepare.
And for those who want to graduate from school faster, we offer to complete 10th and 11th grades in a year.
Checking the results of the exam
On the exam, you can lose points due to the subjectivity of the examiner. Sometimes these points are decisive.
If you were preparing for the USE in Foxford, our teachers and USE experts can double-check your work and explain where the points were deducted fairly, and where it is worth filing an appeal.
Individual educational route
We help to reveal your strengths
In addition to the basic program, you can choose an individual educational route and upgrade in a specific direction.
How does it work?
For example, you dream of becoming a doctor, you love experiments in chemistry, or you are interested in ecology. To unleash your potential and develop your strengths, choose a natural science educational route.
Now courses in this area are available to you: genetics, botany, anatomy, astronomy, zoology and others. You can choose five of them and get in-depth knowledge in the area you are interested in – and so on for each route.

Here’s what they say about us
Elizaveta Strizh
Why do I love Foxford?
The teachers are very positive. Always trying to make us understand the topic.
Almost every lesson contains theoretical material. It helps a lot.
Electronic textbooks. A big plus is that at any time, even from the phone, you can open and read something.
Homework. Making them is very interesting, even in algebra, geometry and physics that are difficult for me. While doing homework, as well as in the classroom, you learn a lot of new things.

Learned about Foxford’s Home School and Externship. I was very attracted by the opportunity of family education, teachers of Moscow State University, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Higher School of Economics and courses in preparation for Olympiads in the leading universities of the country. Mom suggested trying this way of learning. I always liked to study next to my parents, and then I also liked the format. In Foxford’s online class, you can feel free to ask the teacher for help, and pause while watching the recording. But the most interesting thing is that at Foxford Home School, I forgot about that computer game that began to take up a lot of time in my life. Now I have such busy days that sometimes 24 hours in a day are not enough.

What I like best about Foxford:
Don’t get up early!
No need to “work out” and ask classmates for notes if they missed something. I just pressed the button and reviewed the entry, pressed another and read the theoretical material.
The teachers are cheerful and speak clearly.
Nobody scolds for incorrect filling of notebooks. Write as you like, but if you want, just fill it out on the computer.

My son finished his 5th grade at your school During my two years at Foxford, I made as many cool acquaintances as I didn’t get in nine years at school. And we communicate not only on the Internet. Guys from other cities from time to time come to the capital on business, we will definitely use this opportunity to spend a couple of days together. For example, in March I met a girl from Yekaterinburg, and in December I will see almost all my classmates at the essay.

and strong applied skills in the field of visual arts, but also awakens in children a cognitive interest in the world and a creative approach to solving problems in all areas of life. Today the second part is art schools.
Unlike hobby groups, art studios and art workshops, art schools accept children with a clear ability to draw. The selection is made on the basis of viewing the portfolio (several works of drawing, painting and composition, made in different techniques) and entrance examinations.
They accept children aged 10-12, study lasts 5 years, has an approved program and imposes rather strict requirements for attendance and completion of the curriculum. But children also receive solid knowledge: the art school provides an academic classical education in drawing, painting, composition, sculpture, art history; children come out with a whole set of mastered artistic techniques and skills of independent creativity, sufficient to continue their studies at an art university.
In the summer, plein air students have artistic practice in parks, outside the city, and there are also longer trips. Registration opens in the spring on the public services portal mos.ru. Education on a budgetary basis, there are commercial places and additional paid services. Upon graduation, a certificate of education is issued. Several art schools are especially famous in Moscow, each of them has its own characteristics, we will talk about them below.

In addition to the traditional program, the school offers a course on creating 2D and 3D models for cinema, computer games and animation. There is a summer school, which attracts young artists from 10 to 16 years old from all over the country and abroad. In order to enter the Moscow Central Art School, you will have to not only overcome creative entrance tests, but also pass an interview in the general education program. Education in the main program is free. The preparatory program is taught on a commercial basis, admission to the paid department of additional education is conducted all year round, without competition.
