Children’s railway in St.
Petersburg 2022: stations, route, schedule wagon, station attendant, electrician, etc. for 5–7 years. We will tell readers how the children’s Oktyabrskaya railway in St. Petersburg differs from the “adult” railway, how much a ticket costs and where you can travel on it.
Small Oktyabrskaya Children’s Railway in St. Petersburg: history
The educational railway was established in 1948 with the aim of introducing the boys of post-war Leningrad to the profession of a railway worker and initially had the following parameters:
- length of the railway track – 8.1 km ;
- the composition of the technopark – 3 steam locomotives and 9 wagons.
An important event was the appearance in 1958 of the first diesel locomotive in the depot, and by the end of 1960, young railway workers were issued a certificate for the right to drive a locomotive, like adult drivers.
Starting from the 1960s, passengers were transported in the Pioneer and Skazka trains, which were formed from Polish PAFAWAG cars, and in 1988 they were replaced by 11 brand new PV40 cars.
Leningrad schoolchildren received additional education, and for many of them, as well as for current students, the Malaya Oktyabrskaya Railway in St. Petersburg became a ticket to their future profession.
The railway tracks were shortened several times, the route was changed, they were going to be dismantled three times, but they could not be completely closed: on June 1, 2021, the 73rd season of passenger transportation on the children’s railway in St. Petersburg started.
Scheme of the Children’s Railways
The children’s track differs from the “adult” track in the smaller distance between the rails – gauge – 75 cm instead of 152 cm, the absence of freight traffic and a small length. For 2021, the route of the children’s railway in St. Petersburg consists of two sections: northern and southern, with a total length of 13 km.
Northern route (Ozerki)
Northern route Kirovskaya – Zoo – Ozernaya was launched on August 27, 1958 in the Kolomyagi region of St.
Petersburg. Kirovskaya station was closed at 1964, due to an accident on the Kirovskaya – Zoo section, and on the remaining branch between the Zoo and Ozernaya stations, a Yuny junction was made.
Since the construction of the zoo was not started for 20 years, in 1969 the station was renamed Pionerskaya, and in the 1990s it was liquidated in order to free up the territory for the construction of a residential complex.
On August 28, 1999, a new section Shuvalovo – Lesnaya – Beregovaya was laid from Ozernaya to the north, but it lasted two seasons and was dismantled, as it created maintenance problems for the workers of the main Oktyabrskaya highway.
As of 2021, the children’s railway in St. Petersburg in Kolomyagi consists of two stations:
- Ozernaya;
- Young.
The locomotive covers the distance between stations in about 7 minutes. It takes about 20 minutes to hitch a locomotive from the other end to move the train back. Composition of the transport fleet: 2 diesel locomotives, 9 wagons.
INTERESTING FACT . A film about the adventures of Sherlock Holmes was filmed on the northern highway. For the scene with a jump from a moving train, the Malaya Oktyabrskaya Children’s Railway in Ozerki (MOJR) was ideal: the speed of the train was low and the schedule did not have to be changed.
You can get to the main station (Ozernaya) as follows: at the Finlyandsky railway station in St. Petersburg, take an electric train towards Vyborg, after 14 minutes. go to st. Ozernaya, cross the railway tracks and walk along Malaya Desyatinnaya and Chistyakovskaya streets about 400 m (5 min) to the station building.
To get to the station. Young, you need to take the train (direction – Vyborg) or metro, get to the station. Udelnaya, take bus number 40 and get off at the Novokolomyazhsky Prospekt stop. Then, against the course of the bus, walk about 80 m along the street. Verbnaya to the beginning of the narrow gauge railway, indicated by a black and white horizontal bar.
Walk for about 180 m along the tracks to the station. The price of a one-way ticket for an adult ticket along the northern highway is 75 ₽, for a child – 25 ₽.
Southern route (Kupchino – Pushkin)
In 2007, 63 years after the launch of the northern route, the construction of the southern section began in the right-of-way of the “adult” highway. Opened on July 12, 2011, the children’s railway in St. Petersburg in Kupchino is called the Malaya Tsarskoye Selo Railway and for 2021 consists of three stations:
- Molodyozhnaya – in the St. Petersburg Kupchino area;
- station Yuny – located in the village. Shushary;
- Tsarskoselskaya – located in the Pushkin district (Tsarskoye Selo).
Composition of the depot: 3 diesel locomotives, 1 steam locomotive, 10 wagons. One way trip takes about 30 minutes.
It is convenient to get to Molodezhnaya station by metro (station “Kupchino”), and then walk 350 m on foot. The price of an adult ticket is 200 ₽, a child ticket is 50 ₽.
You can get to Tsarskoye Selo along the southern route of the MORR to spend the day in the park of the historic suburb of St. Petersburg or see the baroque Catherine’s Palace, sky blue in gold.
Opening hours in 2021
The Children’s Railway in St. Petersburg operates as follows:
- from June to August – Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00;
- from October to May – closed.

Restrictions due to COVID-19
