Woodbridge School – Educational Agency
Location
Woodbridge School is one of the oldest schools in the UK, founded in 1577. The school is located in Woodbridge, Suffolk. Occupying more than 30 hectares of wooded territory, it offers its students full-fledged conditions for rich study and active leisure.
Woodbridge is a small English town with a remarkable and ancient historical and cultural heritage. Here is one of the most important historical monuments of medieval England – the royal funeral boat of Sutton Hu Saxon. The city is twinned with the French Moussidan and has a modern infrastructure and convenient rail access to the largest urban centers in the UK.
Description
Woodbridge School is a daytime private mixed school for children from 4 to 18 years old. The educational institution includes three large independent departments: preparatory (The Abbey), preparatory (Queen’s House) and high school (actually, Woodbridge School). There is also a small residence for 50 people, in which places are provided for gifted and talented students.
Among the British, Woodbridge School is known primarily for its extracurricular activities, in particular, music. The school boasts its own symphony and chamber orchestras, chamber choir and choral community, as well as a number of smaller ensembles. Many young musicians come out of its walls, some of which are taken to regional and national ensembles, including the National Youth Choir of Great Britain. Directly during their studies, children regularly play and sing in the most prestigious national youth orchestras and choirs.
It is also worth noting that Woodbridge School is one of three schools in the UK where electives in chess are taught by an international player and a grandmaster.
Academically, the school also has fairly good results, although it does not participate in the all-UK rankings, because it considers their criteria system discriminatory. According to the official data of the school, in 2010 the examination results were as follows:
- All seven Oxford and Cambridge applicants were enrolled in universities
- 27 out of 40 students passed mathematics with “A” and 6 with “B”
- 14 out of 29 students passed economics with an “A” and 9 with a “B”
- Over 50% of GCSE tests were written in A* and A
- More than 50% of students passed biology, physics and chemistry with “A*”
- Music scholarships at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and other specialized universities received 53 graduates
Number of students in school more than 950 people
Ages 4 to 18
Curriculum
Woodbridge School’s curriculum covers a wide range of applied and humanities disciplines. The highest level of teaching mathematics and English, which are the basis of the course, ensures the traditionally successful position of the school in these disciplines. For foreigners, a separate English EFL course is read at the school, during which they prepare for the IELTS and IGCSE exams.
Grades 7-9. The basis of the curriculum is English, mathematics and science, which are given the largest number of academic hours. At the 8th year of study, a second foreign language (German or Spanish) and Latin are added. Increased attention is paid to the physical development of the child during physical education lessons.
Grades 10-11 (GCSE). There are 20 subjects available at GCSE, of which students usually take 10 (physical education is considered optional). Foreigners take IGCSE exams in English and mathematics. The curriculum consists of a compulsory and elective part. Compulsory subjects: mathematics, English language and literature, two exams in one science (or three separate sciences), 4-5 other subjects (depending on the chosen field of science). Selected subjects: French, German, Spanish, Information Technology, Religious Studies, Music, Art, History, Geography, Acting, Physical Education, Latin, Business Administration.
Grades 12-13 (AS and A-levels). In the “Sixth grade” students are given 25 A-level subjects to choose from: art and design, economics, mathematics, biology, English for foreigners, modern languages, business management, English literature, music, chemistry, extended graduation project, physical education, classical civilization, higher mathematics, philosophy, computer science, geography, physics, design, history, psychology, acting, Latin and religious studies. In the first year of study, you can take four or five AS subjects, so that later you can continue studying them at the A2 level.
Music. It is recognized throughout the UK that Woodbridge School has created exceptional opportunities for musical development. In recent years, the National Youth Choir has more students from Woodbridge than from any other school in Suffolk. The school is equally proud of the large number of scholarships awarded by the Oxbridge Choir (Universities of Oxford and Cambridge) to its students, and the large number of students who have become eligible to study at the Guildhall School of Music
Performance (and especially ensemble performance) is the main goal of music education. By encouraging children to play musical instruments and sing along with their peers, the school seeks to strengthen the special position of music as an important way of self-expression. Music classes are held in the class of the following instruments: flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, horn, trumpet, harp, piano, organ, percussion instruments, recorder, violin, viola, cello, small double bass.
The Britten and Pierce Specialized School of Music (opened in 1978) has undergone a complete refurbishment and is now able to provide students with a full range of first-class facilities, including performance and practice rooms, as well as a music center equipped with powerful computers to practice composition. Nearly half of high school students receive programmatic music education provided by a qualified team of five permanent staff members and 22 visiting teachers in various instrument classes, who together provide more than 350 music lessons per week.
Extra-curricular activities
An active sports life is another indisputable advantage of the Woodbridge school. The school participates in the national Sports Development Program, which provides its students with valuable additional opportunities. School teams regularly place high in regional and national sports competitions. With a magnificent yacht club on the river. Deben, the school has a high position in sailing and skiff rowing. Also, her golf team often reaches the finals of the national championship.
In general, a wide variety of all-weather sports facilities and first-class gyms provide excellent conditions for practicing popular sports, including: archery, horseback riding, hockey, sailing, athletics, fencing, netball, swimming, cricket, football, skiffing, tennis, cross-country, golf, rugby and windsurfing.
A rich excursion and extra-curricular program is aimed at creating additional learning opportunities and is often an integral part of a particular course. It can be as simple as a trip to the Felixstowe ferry as part of art classes, or a French weekend in Brittany for language practice.
All trips are marked by a wide variety: from visits to ski resorts and sports tours for boys and girls to orchestral tours in the Netherlands and Spain and historical visits to the Parthenon in Athens.
Field research is an integral part of the study of natural sciences.
Woodbridge also works closely with many European schools and offers a wide range of student exchange programs. Exchange trips are available for students in grades 7-13 and cover countries such as Spain, France, Germany and Italy.
Accommodation
The school has a small (for 50 people) residence of an extra class, places in which are provided to the following categories of students:
- A2
- Students with outstanding ability in mathematics, science, music, languages; or up-and-coming rugby, hockey, tennis and cricket players
- Pupils who take an active part in the sports, social and academic life of the school
The school administration also provides assistance to foreigners with accommodation in host families, with many of whom it cooperates on a long-term basis.
Please note! The school does not provide residential accommodation during the midterm and main school holidays. You need to make arrangements in advance for the student to live somewhere in the UK or to return home for the holidays.
All non-European Union students in the UK must have a legal guardian.
