Simi Valley Unified School District

On June 13, 2023, the SVUSD Board of Trustees approved the following new hires and promotions. Please join us in welcoming and congratulating the following employees.

Dr. Jamie Snodgrass
Assistant Superintendent of Instruction and Pupil Services
Educational Services, District Office

Mrs. Snodgrass is a product of Simi Valley Schools. She attended Vista Elementary School, Hillside Middle School and graduated from Royal High School.

Dr. Snodgrass earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from California State University-Northridge, and her Doctorate in Educational Leadership at California Lutheran University.

In 2004, Dr. Snodgrass came to the SVUSD to teach History and Social Sciences at Royal High School. She then served as a Teacher on Special Assignment for English/Language Arts at the District office, before being named Principal of Katherine Elementary School in 2014. In 2017, Mrs. Snodgrass returned to the District Office when she was promoted to Coordinator of Curriculum and Assessment, and then was named Director of Instruction and Pupil Services in 2020. Dr. Snodgrass’ promotion to this new Assistant Superintendent position eliminates the Director position; it will not be filled.

“Education is the greatest gift and pathway for our children to determine and accomplish their goals,” she said. “In the last five years, our district has pushed for a stronger emphasis on cohesive instructional practices—how we collaborate with each other to better our teaching skills, and in turn, increase student achievement. With this emphasis, we bring our school sites, educators, and administrators together to serve the common mission of our district, to create an educational environment where every student has the best opportunities to become the best potential versions of themselves academically, socially, and emotionally. This new position supports a greater focus on and the resources needed to help achieve our goals as educators.

Dr. Snodgrass is married and she and her husband have two daughters at Royal High School.

Julie Ellis
Assistant Superintendent of Personnel Services
District Office

Mrs. Julie Ellis has worked in education for 29 years. A graduate of Simi Valley Schools, she started in the Simi Valley Unified School District in 1991. She was hired as a permanent elementary teacher in 1994 and taught at Madera Elementary School. While there, she served as Girls’ Volleyball coach for Simi Valley High School and was the co-sponsor of the Sinaloa Drama Club. In 1998 she transferred to Wood Ranch Elementary where she stayed until being named Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) in 2014. In 2015, Mrs. Ellis became Principal at Vista Elementary School. Mrs. Ellis was named the SVUSD Director of Elementary Education in 2018, and then in 2022, she was named the Director of Personnel, a position which will now dissolve with Mrs. Ellis’ promotion to Assistant Superintendent.

She earned her Bachelor’s degree from California State University-Northridge (CSUN), her administrative credential from California Lutheran University, and her Master’s degree from CSUN.

“Throughout my career, I have dedicated myself to supporting students, teachers, and staff,” she said. “As I step into this new role in Personnel Services, I will continue to focus my efforts on supporting the development of our Classified and Certificated employees. The heart and soul of any school district are the people that dedicate themselves to the work of educating children. I firmly believe that in order to support all students with becoming the best potential version of themselves, we are called to support our employees to reach their potential in the roles that they serve.”

Mrs. Ellis has two children (one a recent graduate and the other a junior, both from Simi Valley High School) and is married to Mr. Dustin Ellis, also a teacher for the SVUSD. She is an avid athlete who went through CSUN on a basketball scholarship. She also plays volleyball and competes in marathons.

Jordan Hoffman
Assistant Principal
Royal High School

Mrs. Jordan Hoffman comes to us from the Las Virgenes Unified School District, where she has taught middle school math since 2015. Mrs. Hoffman earned her Bachelor’s degree from Scripps College and her Master’s degree from the University of Southern California. She has just completed Preliminary Administrative Services Credential through Center EdX.

While Mrs. Hoffman is new to Simi Valley Schools, both of her younger sisters graduated from high school here, one at Simi Valley High School and the other at Santa Susana High School. Her husband is also a Simi Valley High School graduate.

Mrs. Hoffman came to education from her love of children of any age. She hopes to become a positive influence for the staff and students at Royal High School.

“Growing up, I worked nearly every summer as either a babysitter, a lifeguard, a camp counselor, an art teacher’s assistant, a tutor, etc. Helping kids learn and develop skills to help them thrive has always been a passion of mine,” she said.

She has been married for 10 years, and together they have a toddler, three cats, and a dog (all rescues).

“My daughter is two going on 13 and would live at the park if I let her,” she said.

In her free time, she loves cooking and baking, and Friday game night with her husband and friends.

“I likely drink an unhealthy amount of coffee but I blame that on my Seattle upbringing,” she joked. “Most importantly, my biggest passion is watching my daughter experience the joy of learning through the endless adventures we have together,” she said.

Corine Musgrove
Assistant Principal
Sinaloa Middle School

Mrs. Corine Musgrove has a diverse educational and experiential background. After getting her Bachelor’s degree in Communications and English from Washington State University, she worked in strategic marketing for 12 years. Then September 11, 2001 came, and her priorities changed.

“As a lifelong learner and perpetual student, I knew I wanted to join the world of education because I believe in the power of education to lift up whole communities,” she said. “I love engaging with students and helping them to feel safe and confident at school so that they can learn important skills and knowledge and be successful in college and their career.”

Mrs. Musgove obtained her first Master’s degree, an Master’s in Business Administration, from California Lutheran University. She earned her Master’s in Anthropology from University of California-Santa Barbara (UCSB), and then her Master’s in Education from National University. She just completed her Preliminary Administrative Services Credential through Center EdX.

She began teaching at UCSB, then at the Ventura County Office of Education, the Las Virgenes Unified School District, and she currently teaches for the Conejo Unified School District.

Her leadership style is grounded in community-building, transparent communication, empathy, and a deep commitment to social justice.

“I am very excited to continue my work (at Sinaloa Middle School) in promoting equity and inclusion in the education community,” she said. “I am dedicated to creating safe, inclusive and equitable learning environments for students of all backgrounds and abilities.”

Besides being an avid reader and photographer, Mrs. Musgrove said her favorite passion is travel.

“I love going to new places and learning about different people, history, and cultures that exist in our beautiful world,” she said.

She and her husband, a retired California Highway Patrol officer, have two teen sons and two dogs. She lives in Westlake Village.

Biography of Sergey Lazarev

Sergey Lazarev loved music since childhood and performed on stage from an early age, participated in the Fidget project, was part of the Smash !! musical group, and then began a solo career. Now he is an eminent artist performing all over the world, gathering large concert venues, equally successfully performing songs in Russian and English. Twice became the bronze medalist of Eurovision: in 2016 and 2019.

Childhood

Sergey was born on April 1, 1983 in Moscow, in the family of Vyacheslav Yurievich and Valentina Viktorovna Lazarev. The family already grew up 5-year-old son Pavel. When Seryozha was 5, and Pasha, respectively, 10, his father left the family. It happened suddenly – one day the man simply disappeared and stopped communicating. He later had a new family; Sergey has a half-brother Andrey.

Sergey Lazarev in childhood

Despite the absence of his own father nearby, Sergei never felt flawed or unloved. Valentina was helped to raise children by her mother, Zhanna Petrovna. The character of the woman was iron – you will not spoil. So Seryozha, willy-nilly, got used to the ideal order in everything. Sometimes it seems to the artist that he suffers from mysophobia – the fear of picking up some kind of bacillus.

Mom of Sergey Lazarev

Later, Valentina Viktorovna got married. Sergey Lazarev’s stepfather’s name was Mikhail Alexandrovich. Now they are divorced from the artist’s mother.

Sergey Lazarev’s first school photo

From the age of four, the future singer was engaged in gymnastics, won competitions and received a youth category, but at 8 he was forced to leave the sport due to health problems. In high school, Sergei returned to training – being the youngest in the class, he was rather frail, and decided to gain muscle mass in order to be able to fend for himself.

Fidgets

The future artist became interested in music early. Lazarev began studying music at the age of eight. From the age of nine, Serezha, together with his brother, performed in the Loktev Ensemble. At the same time, the future singer played in the theater of Boris Pokrovsky.

In 1995, Lazarev became the soloist of the children’s group “Fidgets”. The Fidget teacher Elena Pinjoyan recalled that before joining the ensemble, Seryozha was a very shy boy. Once he went to the store for bread and got into a conversation with the seller. Her daughter Yulia performed in Fidget, which the woman casually mentioned. Sergei became interested – he had already heard about Fidgets thanks to the Morning Star program he adored.

Young Serezha Lazarev and Fidgets

The woman introduced him to her daughter; the three of them went to the “headquarters” “Fidget”. Climbing the stairs to the third floor, Seryozha gave up several times and abandoned the idea. Almost by force, new acquaintances pushed him into Elena’s office and kept her outside so that Lazarev would not run away.

Fidget – Go

The teacher immediately recognized the talent and insisted that Seryozha come the next morning. The teachers quickly fell in love with the complaisant, executive boy. And even the guys from the team, usually distrustful and even rude towards newcomers, quickly accepted him into the company.

One day the Fidgets went to a competition in Italy. On the observation deck, Seryozha was so inspired by what he saw that he began to sing “Santa Lucia”. The good acoustics of the place greatly strengthened his voice. When he finished, a whole crowd gathered below, applauding the little singer.

Sergei Lazarev and Vlad Topalov met in Fidget

In “fidgets” Sergey met Nastya Zadorozhnaya, Lena Katina, Yulia Volkova, Vlad Topalov.
At the same time, the boy tried on the role of a film actor, starring in the comic magazine Yeralash. The series with his participation is called “Liar”. A from 1997 to 2003, the famous intro of the newsreel (“Boys and girls, as well as from parents …”) was performed precisely by the voice of Lazarev.

Sergey Lazarev in Yeralash

Sergey Lazarev received his matriculation certificate at Moscow school No. 1061. By the way, they subsequently created a museum dedicated to the popular artist.
In 1999, Sergei entered the Moscow Art Theater School, and five years later he received a red diploma.

Smash!!

The “adult” career of Sergey Lazarev began with the group Smash !!. The singer created it together with his friend from Fidget Vlad Topalov.

Sergey Lazarev in childhood and youth

The idea to create their own musical group came to the guys back in the days of Fidget. They began to make dreams come true after Vlad’s mother invited the singers to record together an aria from the popular musical Notre-Dame de Paris. This song was supposed to be a birthday present for Vlad’s father, civil servant Mikhail Genrikhovich Topalov.

Sergey Lazarev and Vlad Topalov – Belle

The man saw the potential in the guys and took on the duties of a music producer for a new group, taking as a model the brainchild of Simon Nyper-Bell, the producer of the Wham! boy band. With the song “Belle” in August 2002, Lazarev and Topalov won the first New Wave competition in Jurmala. Topalov and Lazarev’s video for this song was at the top of the charts for about six months.

Smash!! – the most popular boy band in Russia in the early 2000s

In early 2003, the band’s debut album, Smash!!, was released. called Freeway. The record almost instantly received the status of gold. More than a million licensed copies were sold out, and the number of pirated discs sold is incalculable. Russian schoolgirls fiercely argued which of the “smashes” is more beautiful: “black” or “white”.

Smash!! – Faith

In 2003, the guys almost went to represent Russia at Eurovision, but they gave preference to the Tatu group. Perhaps Yulia Volkova and Lena Katina (also, by the way, people from Fidget) were the only youth group of the early 2000s that could compete with Smash !!. In 2004, Topalov and Lazarev were again one step away from the cherished competition, but unexpectedly for everyone, the “manufacturer” Yulia Savicheva went to Istanbul.

Perhaps the duo would have made it to Eurovision if not for the black cat that ran between Sergei and Vlad’s father. At the end of 2004, the second (and last in this line-up) disc of Smash!! was released. “2nite”. Vlad Topalov recorded the third album “Evolution” alone, after which the sun of the “Smash” group set forever.

In 2004 Sergey Lazarev left Smash!!

Many hypotheses have been put forward about the reasons for Lazarev’s departure, and the parties to the conflict say different things. It seemed to Sergei that Vlad’s father was promoting his son to the place of leader, and he was infringing on him, underpaying fees. Mikhail Topalov, in turn, argued that everything was exactly the opposite: Sergei “starred” and began to demand more. The truth, as usual, is probably somewhere in between.

In an interview, Vlad Topalov hinted that friction within the group began because of Lazarev’s allegedly unconventional orientation. Rumors about Sergei’s addictions could interfere with the image of the boy band, the reputation of Vlad Topalov, and Mikhail Genrikhovich, according to his son, had an extremely negative attitude towards homosexuals.

Solo career

Leaving Smash!! In 2004, Sergey Lazarev started his solo career. The artist signed a contract with the record company “Style Records”.

December 1, 2005 Sergey Lazarev released his debut solo album Don’t Be Fake. It consisted of 12 songs that were recorded in London. The singer created eight compositions in collaboration with producer Brian Rowling, who has worked with such stars as Celine Dion, Enrique Iglesias, Britney Spears, Craig David and Rob Thomas.

Sergey Lazarev – Fake

In early 2006, the first Russian-language song by Sergei Lazarev, “Even if you leave,” appeared in the rotation of radio stations. At the end of the year, at the MTV Russia Music Awards, Lazarev was noted as the “Best Performer”.

Young Sergey Lazarev

In the late spring of 2007 Sergey Lazarev released his second album TV Show. Five songs from the disc already had video clips, and the singer also recorded the ballad Almost sorry (“Why did they come up with love”) in Russian. The Russian text of the composition is not a translation of English, this was the idea of Sergey himself. In the same year, Lazarev took part in the New Wave and sang Michael Jackson’s Earth Song.

Sergey Lazarev – Earth Song

The third solo album, Sergei Lazarev, according to the already established tradition, began to record in England. In early 2010, the singer began to collaborate with the music company Sony Music Entertainment. The release of the new album Electric Touch fell on the same year 2010, in 2011 the album received gold status.

Sergey has a lot of collaborations in his creative work. In 2011, for the New Wave, he recorded the song “When You Tell Me That You Love Me” together with Ani Lorak, making a beautiful couple on stage with a Ukrainian woman and giving rise to rumors about their more than friendly relations.

In the winter of the same year, together with Timati and DJ Meg, Lazarev released a composition and a video for it Moscow to California.

Sergey Lazarev in his youth and now

At the end of 2012, the fourth album of the artist “Lazarev” was released in electronic format – for sale in Russia via iTunes. A few months later, it became the best-selling in the country. In the spring of 2013, a new concert program by Sergei Lazarev was presented.

Over the next year, Sergei released clips for singles from his latest album. Clips for the songs “Tears in my heart”, “Stumblin'”, “In the very heart”, “Take it off”, “7 wonders” gradually gained popularity among listeners.

In 2015, Sergei celebrated the tenth anniversary of his solo career by releasing a collection of the best songs.

Eurovision

In due time at Smash!! twice failed to get to Eurovision. Well, as a solo artist, Sergei Lazarev more than compensated for this miscalculation.
For the first time, the singer entered the international song contest in 2016 with the song “You Are The Only One” (“You are the only one”). In Stockholm, the artist hoped to repeat the success of his eternal competitor Dima Bilan, the only winner of Eurovision from Russia, or at least Polina Gagarina, who in 2015 lacked several points to reach the first place.

But I had to settle for third place, which, of course, is also a good result. But domestic viewers were upset, because the number turned out to be so spectacular. The performance took place in intimate twilight, and the use of the “magic wall” technology made the wings “grown” behind the back of the artist dressed in a black turtleneck very realistic.

Eurovision 2016: Sergey Lazarev – You Are The Only One

Three years later, the singer made another attempt to win the hearts of European listeners, this time in Tel Aviv and with the song “Scream”, in the creation of which Philip Kirkorov took part. “A lot comes from childhood, a lot of fears turn into some kind of screams in adulthood,” Sergey commented on the deep meaning of the composition.

Eurovision 2019: Sergey Lazarev – Scream

Alas, neither dry rain, nor lightning and meteors, nor mirror doubles helped Lazarev rise above third place. Perhaps the reason was not in the song and performance of Sergei, but in the tense foreign policy situation

Theater roles

In 2002, Sergey Lazarev found time from touring in Smash!! and played in the play “Romeo and Juliet” on the stage of the Alexander Pushkin Theater – after all, he studied at the acting department of the Moscow Art Theater School. Of course, he got the role of Romeo.

A year later, he played a major role in the production of “A Few Days in the Life of Alyosha Karamazov” at the Moscow Art Theater.

After leaving Smash!! Sergei returned to the Pushkin Theater and took part in the play Borrow a Tenor.

At the end of 2005, the jury of the theater award “The Seagull” awarded Lazarev two statuettes at once: as “Breakthrough of the Year” and for “Best Love Scene”.

Maestro Oleg Tabakov also recognized Sergey’s talent. From his hands in 2005, Lazarev received the “Talented Fusion of the Art of a Comedy Character Artist with a Musical Talent” award for playing in the play “Borrow a Tenor”.

Sergei Lazarev in the play “Borrow the Tenor”

In the summer of 2006, Sergey Lazarev was awarded “Crystal Turandot” for “Best acting debut 2005-2006”.

Since 2012, Sergei has been the leading actor in the play Talents and the Dead at the Pushkin Theatre.

Business

A big fan of four-legged friends, Sergey Lazarev founded an original pet business. Since 2014, he has owned a confectionery for animals “Poodle Strudel”. Since sweets are bad for dogs, the store sells cakes with the appropriate flavors: beef, chicken, fish.

Daisy, Sergey Lazarev’s dog

Sergey was inspired to create an unusual bakery by the mongrel Daisy, whom he “adopted” after a visit to an animal shelter. He saw dog desserts for sale while touring America and Europe and wanted to please his pet with the same. But it turned out that dog cakes had not yet reached Russia. Then Sergei decided to strike while the iron was hot, and soon the grand opening of the Poodle Strudel took place.

The singer opened a bakery for animals

Family Tragedy

Sergey did not have a close relationship with his brother Pavel. The younger brother was an obedient, well-mannered and hardworking boy who adored music and creativity in general, while the older one grew up unlucky, he was attracted by the street with all the ensuing consequences.

Brothers Lazarev

In 1999, 20-year-old Pavel first entered a penitentiary due to fraud. After serving the prescribed 25 months and barely finding himself free, the young man was caught with drugs, but got off with a suspended sentence.

Pavel spent the next five years at liberty, fell in love with a girl, and their daughter Alina was born. In 2007, he committed theft and paid with a year of freedom. In 2008, Lazarev Sr. attacked a woman, intending to rob, was caught and sentenced to three years in prison, but was released on parole after a year and a half.

In November 2010, law enforcement officers found heroin in a man during a search. Pavel was accused of drug trafficking on an especially large scale.
After being released in 2014, Pavel decided to put an end to his criminal past. The brothers became friendly as in early childhood. Pavel intended to open his own business, often asked Sergei for advice. The whole family got together for the holidays. But the idyll did not last long.

Sergey Lazarev with his brother Pavel and mother

In March 2015, Pavel, who had just celebrated his 37th birthday, got into a terrible accident – a tire burst at the car, and it was carried out into the oncoming lane. He got off relatively lightly: he broke his nose and earned a concussion. At least, so it seemed to relatives, until the man had a fever. He was getting worse. The ambulance took Pavel to the hospital, but the doctors could not save him. He died a week after the accident. More information about Lazarev’s personal losses can be found in this material.

Lazarev did not want to advertise the loss, but during the concert, which took place on the eve of Pavel’s funeral, he could not stand it, burst into tears right on stage and told the fans about his brother’s death.

At the funeral, Sergei saw his own father. The tragedy brought them closer, and Lazarev forgot about old grievances. Father and son reconnected. But exactly 2 years and one day after the death of Pavel Vyacheslav Yuryevich, he died – an ulcer made itself felt. “But yesterday he wrote to me“ Let’s remember Pashka “,” Sergey lamented.

Caring for Pavel’s daughter, Alina Lazareva, fell on Sergey’s shoulders. The singer spoils the girl, and, probably, thousands of subscribers on her instagram are largely the merit of his authority.

Personal life of Sergey Lazarev

The personal life of Sergei Lazarev has long been of interest to both fans and the media. And, paradoxically, almost more than his work.

In 2008, TV presenter Lera Kudryavtseva appeared in the life of Sergei Lazarev, who is much older than the singer. However, the age difference did not play a special role in the relationship. At every event where Lera appeared, Sergei followed her, and vice versa. Their romance became known on the New Wave. There, the artist began to court the popular TV presenter. At first, the artists stated that they were connected only by work and friendship. They stopped hiding feelings a little later.

For me, a beautiful girl should be good in everything – both in figure, and in face, and in mind. I can’t stand obsessive girls, with bad manicure and lack of taste.

Skeptics said that the relationship between Lazarev and Kudryavtseva was pure PR, while romantics believed that this was true love. However, the couple lived in different places, but there were still rumors about the wedding: Sergey promised that he would marry a TV presenter. He had to keep his word in 2011 at the Muz-TV awards. The hosts of the ceremony, Ivan Urgant and Ksenia Sobchak, took the lovers by surprise: they approached, handed the couple rings, hastily put on Lera’s veil and “forced” to exchange vows of allegiance.

Sergey Lazarev and Lera Kudryavtseva met for PR, fans say

In the summer of 2012, the couple broke up. At the end of 2013, Sergey and Lera were able to restore only a creative union, acting as co-hosts of the show “Song of the Year”.

At the beginning of 2018, Sergey showed his son Nikita. At that time, the boy was about three and a half years old, that is, he was born in 2014. But it is unlikely that the singer would have declassified his child if at the end of 2016 the paparazzi had not filmed the father and son going to church.

Sergey Lazarev with his son

Little Nikita can be seen not only on Sergey’s Instagram, but also in the video for the song “So Beautiful”.

The name of Nikita’s mother is kept secret. It is believed that he used the services of a surrogate mother like Philip Kirkorov.

Fans have not yet had time to get used to the idea that Lazarev is the father of a son, and in September 2019 it became known that the singer is twice a father. In 2018, his daughter was born. Moreover, at the moment when the press became aware of this event, he claimed that his daughter was another invention of journalists. But in the Secret for a Million program, he said that he really was raising his daughter Anna.

Sergey Lazarev now

In 2020, Sergey Lazarev could be seen in the show “Come on, all together!”. In one of the releases, the singer argued with the songwriter Simon Osiashvili, who criticized one of the performances for the song in English. Lazarev spoke out against injustice: at the beginning of his career, he himself faced criticism of his English-language compositions. However, in the final of the show, Sergey flawlessly performed the composition in his native language:

Sergey Lazarev – In the heart

The performer was an invited guest in the show “Mask”. He went on stage in a dinosaur costume and sang the song “Cruel Love” by Kirkorov. The jury decided that Nikolai Baskov was hiding behind the mask, and Lazarev was sitting in a panda costume. Therefore, when the identity of the artist was revealed, everyone was surprised. And Sergei did not hide that he deliberately changed his voice in order to confuse everyone.
