To the attention of graduates

The most interesting school in Dagestan: where and how children from the village of Tsmur study

How can the lives of rural children be completely changed? Build a football field, open a programming circle and give the opportunity to study in a good modern school. But first, the old cowshed will have to be demolished – which was done by patrons Marat Shaidaev and Evgenia Tyurikova. We went to the village of Tsmur to see how one of the most interesting schools in Dagestan lives.

“I didn’t know that we have such places here”

From Makhachkala to Tsmur – about three and a half hours by car: first along the line of the Caspian Sea, and then up into the mountains. This is the territory of Southern Dagestan (or, as they say here, Yuzhdag) – the border with Azerbaijan is not far.

We are going from Makhachkala itself by taxi, experiencing all the delights of extreme driving, so popular in Dagestan. Therefore, all the beauty of the surroundings can only be appreciated after arriving in Tsmur. “I didn’t know that we had such places here,” the taxi driver says in surprise, looking at the new school, the final goal of our trip.

Against the backdrop of green hills stands a modern two-story building, next to it are several more small houses with sloping roofs. Right next to the school there is a football field, sports and playgrounds. At the end of the main building there is colorful graffiti: a boy stands on a mountain of books and looks through binoculars.

Among the mountain landscapes, all this really looks unusual: from a distance it seems that someone just took the neat houses and attached them to the mountains in Photoshop.

“He is showing me a barn built in 1929. This, he says, is a school”

One of the founders of the school is businessman and philanthropist Marat Shaidaev. From here, from the village of Tsmur, his family originated. Marat used to do something for the village whenever possible, and five years ago he was asked to help the only school in the village.

Evgenia, wife of Marat and co-founder of the school, says: “Small peoples have a desire or an inner need to do something for a place called “small homeland”. We periodically help Tsmur: either to make a road, or to fix a fence, or to carry out water.

One day Marat says to me: “You know, my uncle asks me to change windows at a school in Tsmur.” And he shows a cowshed built in 1929, sagging in different directions, looking like a twisted pipe. Single story, of course. This is the school, he says.

It was immediately clear that simply replacing the windows would be of little use.

“If you really help, then you need to demolish the school and build a new one. But even a new building will not save the situation. If the education system is not changed, then in exactly five years the school will be exactly the same cowshed, ”Yevgeny recalls the conversation.

It took Evgenia and Marat a year and a half to get a modern building in place of the barn, and schoolchildren finally got a warm toilet, hot water and the Internet. Today, the school has its own transformer box so that the light “does not fall”, and its own sewage system, which, alas, the villagers cannot boast of.

In 2016, Marat and Evgenia established the Selo Charitable Foundation, whose goal is to help children in villages receive a quality education. The activities of the foundation extend not only to Tsmur, but also to the entire district: programming clubs have already been opened in two schools, and they are about to open in two more.

“We had an illusion that we would easily bring teachers here.”

Another building on the school grounds is a small four-story building with balconies for 12 apartments. Not classrooms, just apartments: they are all designed for teachers and other employees who will live and work here. True, while most of them are empty.

“We had an illusion that we would easily bring teachers here: we would give them furnished apartments and they would be happy to work here. We thought that now we would get a turn. And we didn’t get it. We didn’t actually get anyone.

They brought four teachers – two were “eaten” during the first year of life in the village

“Ate” a team of local teachers who have no desire to change anything. We had to figure out how to train new teachers,” says Evgenia.

And they came up with: methodologists from Moscow were brought to Tsmur, who for a year told and showed teachers how to work on the Mobile E-Education platform. The idea is simple – to unload the teacher from organizational work so that he has time for development. For the teacher to enter the platform, open the lesson and see what topic, what task he should give the children, what to show. “We spent a year on implementation. The result was low, but we did not give up, we went to the second round. Now we continue to eat cactus, ”says Evgenia.

In the four years that the new school has existed, it has changed four directors: it was not easy to find a good leader. And after the school was built and equipped, it was “given” back to the state. Therefore, with a change in the teaching staff, there may now be difficulties: “We have influence on the educational process. We need to go through the committees, do certification of teachers, look for opportunities to train them – they are also residents of Tsmur.

“Saving the country from a humanitarian catastrophe”

The first thing you see when you enter the school grounds is a yellow minibus with the sign “Children”. Why does a small rural school need its own bus? Because today not only children from Tsmur study here: children from four more villages are taken to school. Everyone is welcome here, some live an hour away.

Evgenia emphasizes: “We don’t want to create a selective school. Today everyone is focused on selecting the smartest, the fastest. And where are we going to put the rest? The idea is to provide a normal, stable secondary education in the villages of the Caucasus. Not to select the most brilliant and not to make something completely incredible out of it, but to save the country from a humanitarian catastrophe.

3.5 million people in the country study in rural schools. After the 11th grade, they come out as nothing: no skills, no knowledge. They cannot enter a university: on the one hand, they do not have the money for this, and on the other hand, they do not have the knowledge for this. They might have studied normally, and they would have been given a hostel, but no one is able to do it.

The heads of districts in the regions have a KPI for the number of schools – it doesn’t matter if there is one child, 35 or 120

Well, for 35 children, what kind of teaching staff can there be? There are no full-fledged classes – therefore, there are no subject teachers. But you can just buy a bus to take these children to school. After all, it is much cheaper and easier. We are trying to change this system, we want to show that it is possible.”

Recently, the school also has a preparatory class for children of five or six years old. They mainly need it in order to learn the language. “At this age, children here actually do not speak Russian: at home they communicate with them in Lezgi. And they need a language: all teaching is in Russian. Periodically, teachers switch to Lezghin, but this is difficult to control.”

Now 78 children study at the school in two shifts. The fact that Tsmur has already become the center of attraction for many children in the district is not at all surprising: everything here does not end with ordinary lessons. All the guys in the village come running to the football field to play, sometimes they come from neighboring ones. The children also have their own greenhouse, and entire fields of planted hazelnuts surround the school grounds.

In the houses located next to the school, there are extracurricular activities and clubs. The choice is large: you can go to learn to draw, embroider with beads or knit toys, choose an elective in physics or one of the sports clubs – table tennis or football. The theater group and programming are the most popular among children.

“90% are people who just do something. Let’s let them live”

Looking at the houses for electives, it is easy to guess which of them teaches programming: there are bright ottomans right at the entrance. The atmosphere is very cozy and creative: there is a second floor and wide steps from which children can watch presentations or work on a laptop.

Programming will be taught in stages. Some children, for example, first need to be taught how to use a computer. In the initial group there will be computer science “without a socket” – algorithms and logic. Then they will study Matata Lab, programming small robots. And older guys will master Scratch, Python and sports robotics.

Why Programming? I think this profession will be more and more in demand. Even if the child does not become a programmer, he will definitely own a computer, he will have skills, and he will be able to earn his penny, ”explains Evgenia.

Now many children come to learn programming from other villages. “Scratch and the process of writing programs are very interesting to them,” says Evgenia.

“Children, if you feel uncomfortable, you don’t have to hit each other”

Some apartments in the “teachers’ house” have already found tenants. In one of these lives the supply manager Timur, who took us around the school grounds. He himself invited us to his place and showed us how everything is arranged inside. Excellent modern apartments – on some rental service they would definitely be rated no lower than five.

Malika Akhmedova, a teacher of history and social studies, a graduate of the Teacher for Russia program, lives in a similar apartment (here they differ only in color). In addition to history and social studies, Malika teaches Russian language and literature in elementary school, and also leads a theater and writing circle.

Malika herself is from Dagestan, but before Tsmur she managed to work in a village school in the Tambov region. A year ago, they called her and told her about Tsmur: “They say: ‘Malika, don’t you want to take part in all this?’ I thought: God, I have never heard of Tsmur, although I myself am from Dagestan, I will come and have a look. And, basically, everything came together.”

We meet with Malika in the assembly hall, which is located right there, in the “teachers’ house”. On chairs and on the floor are unfinished decorations and unassembled costumes that Malika brought from the district center in the morning. After classes, she and the children will rehearse the performance – between lessons, Malika has half an hour to prepare for the rehearsal.

“Teachers for Russia” came up with the “Theater in a Box” project. About two weeks ago we received a package from a school in the Voronezh region: the children sent us a map of their village, which they drew themselves. And based on how we perceived this card, we must put on a performance, ”says Malika.

Children really like the theater club: they come here not only to reveal their artistic abilities, but first of all to learn how to interact with each other. Malika recalls how she addressed the guys in class: “Children, if you feel uncomfortable, you don’t need to hit each other. You can just say, “Please don’t do this, it hurts me.” For two months I told them this and I was almost ready to give up. But at some point, I heard the girl say to the boy, who was banging a chair on her desk: “Please don’t do that, I don’t like it.” He heard and stopped.

Evgenia also notes this moment: “One of our achievements is that boys no longer shun girls. Five years ago, this communication did not exist. Now they are learning to interact with each other, and it is amazing that they come for this. That is, the child formulates: “I came to be more open, I came to learn how to talk.”

“I want to study here, I’m ready to live here”

The creative atmosphere is felt everywhere here – it seems that you are walking around the territory of some cool children’s camp. Recently, an “active weekend” was held at the school – different schools were invited, about 300 children and teachers visited Tsmur in two days. Evgenia says: “We divided them into groups of 10 people, let them into our circles, and the children said:“ This is just another planet, I want to stay here. Take me away, I live in that village, I want to study here, I’m ready to live here.” The visiting children were all delighted.

Even the children from the district center looked at the new equipment with excitement: “Do you give computers?!”

Evgenia and Marat are already working to ensure that children have the opportunity to live on the territory of the school. In the near future, we plan to build a boarding school where you can send your child from Monday to Friday. “Such boarding schools are in great demand in the Caucasus. Either it happened because the locals often leave to work, or because the apartments were small and the families had many children. The children will arrive on Sunday evening and leave on Friday evening.”

At the beginning of June, guys from the Kruzhok project came to Tsmur, about which even more people learned after the film by Yuri Dudya. The founders of Kruzhka travel to remote corners of Russia, teach teenagers about engineering, music or journalism for a week, and prove to everyone that a person’s life is not determined by the place of his birth.

This is what the school in Tsmur strives for, and it seems that the founders, teachers and everyone who works here are doing great. “Your world has no boundaries” – written on a large globe, which is located in front of the main building of the school.

“She’s been booby-trapped, high.

” How students and parents reacted to the evacuation of schools in Yekaterinburg

On Wednesday, 151 out of 163 schools and several universities in Yekaterinburg were evacuated due to a bomb threat. A letter with threats was distributed through parent chats. Many mothers and fathers panicked, and employees of educational institutions often took children out into the cold without warm clothes. The air temperature was -21°C.

“I will blow up the school”

“The school is mined. I’ve hated everyone all my life. Today you will all feel my hatred. You are all finished. I will blow up the school. You will all die,” the letter sent on January 12 to Yekaterinburg’s parent chats says.

A teacher from one of the “mined schools” told the local publication E1.RU that the message was also sent to many educational institutions, but at first it went to spam, so “it wasn’t seen right away.”

According to the local education department, 151 schools have been evacuated. Also in the city, the Ural State University of Architecture and Art, the Ural State University of Communications, the Mining University, the Yekaterinburg Theater Institute, and the Ural State Mussorgsky Conservatory were evacuated. Upon each “mining”, law enforcement agencies conduct an inspection.

The mayor of Yekaterinburg Alexei Orlov, in an interview with URA.RU, suggested that messages with threats could come from abroad. He clarified that such attacks occur regularly in the Urals.

“This is outside interference. We have been through this more than once over the past two or three years, unfortunately. There are destructive forces from neighboring countries that are shaking the situation,” the mayor believes. And the source of the publication in law enforcement agencies said that a person living in Latvia is suspected of “mining”.

The mayor said that the city authorities are looking into the situation and are in touch with the security services. According to him, it all started at three in the morning. Awakened teachers noticed that notifications about supposedly mining had come to the postal addresses of schools.

“Naturally, we cannot risk the safety of children, so such decisions (on evacuation – Gazeta.Ru) have been made. Everything is organized, without panic. It is clear that parents (delivered – Gazeta.Ru) are inconvenienced. Now the special services are looking into this story,” Orlov said.

Immediately after the evacuation, several schools announced the transition to remote classes until the end of the week. But the mayor emphasized that there was no talk of mass sending schoolchildren to study from home.

Parents in panic

Many mothers and fathers panicked when they learned about the mass evacuation. “The director figuratively told us what was in the text of this letter with threats: he hates school, something like that. The letter was sent from some strange address. In the end, everyone was sent home. The teachers reacted calmly. But the parents reacted differently. There were those who shouted to urgently give things away: someone had backpacks at school, ”a teacher from one of the affected schools told E1.RU.

Some parents are afraid to send their children back to school after the incident. And many did not like how they were informed about what had happened.

“All class teachers should urgently notify parents that, for technical reasons, lessons will start later today.” Well, that’s all. Then, on her own behalf, the class teacher added that she would send assignments and today we would study from home. And they have already read about “mining” from the news,” said the father of one of the students.
