“They didn’t check the genitals.” School district will pay compensation to transgender student
Society

Delta Woods Junior High School student in Lees Summit, Missouri, who was born a female, legally changed his name in 2010 and received a new birth certificate in 2014 showing that name and a different (male) gender.
Although the student was allowed to participate in boys’ sports, he had to use a separate shower, changing room and toilet, as access to these areas for boys was forbidden to him.
In 2014, a student filed a complaint with the State Human Rights Commission and in 2015 filed a lawsuit against Blue Springs R-IV School District, which includes his school. The lawsuit alleged that the reason for the plaintiff’s ban on the use of the boys’ facilities was his transgender status and the alleged presence of “female genitalia”. Defendant “did not question, investigate, or in any other way test the genitals of other male students,” the lawsuit said. In a recent trial, a jury found the county guilty of gender discrimination and awarded the plaintiff $4 million in damages.
A spokesman for the school district stated that they did not agree with the verdict and would seek reversal of the verdict in other courts.
