Lafayette Elementary School

As we begin the 2022-2023 school year, we reiterate our commitment to safe, in-person learning for all students, and a safe working environment for our staff. We continue to employ a layered mitigation strategy in our schools and offices, in alignment with current guidance from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), our local health agency, Contra Costa County Health Services (CCHS), and Cal/OSHA. More information can be found on our website, under the tab “COVID-19 Resources.”

Since the start of the pandemic, we have aligned our district-wide protocols with the guidance and direction of our public health agencies. We continue that approach with the protocols for the coming school year, as outlined below.

Face Masks

CDPH continues to “strongly recommend” that students, staff, and campus volunteers wear face masks when indoors on campus, but they are not required. Supplies of high-quality masks (N95, KN95, and 3-ply surgical masks) will be available at all schools and the District Office, and masks will be provided to any student, staff member, or campus volunteer who wishes to wear them.

COVID-19 Testing

For the 2022-2023 school year, the District will discontinue weekly COVID-19 surveillance testing. Testing technicians will not be present on campuses, and at-home testing will replace proctored tests.

At-home tests will be available at all schools and work locations and will be available for the following uses:

  • Tests will be available to staff upon request
  • Tests will be offered to classes of students in the event of a known outbreak (3 or more reported cases in a single class during a 14-day period)
  • Tests will be distributed to families for voluntary use at the start of the school year and may be distributed at other times, such as return from breaks or 5th grade camp.

CPDH has issued a blanket extension of all FDA-approved over-the-counter COVID-19 tests beyond their FDA-authorized expiration date. If you have an expired at-home test, as long as the test’s internal control line after test development is both easily visible and the color specified by the test instructions, the test may be used. This emergency blanket extension is valid until CDPH specifies otherwise.

STUDENTS: Returning to School After Testing Positive for COVID-19

We ask that families follow the recommendations set forth by CDPH. Based on these recommendations, students should remain at home if symptomatic, should take an at-home COVID-19 test, and should isolate for five days if positive. Students may return to school after five days, as long as symptoms are improving and the student is fever-free for 24 hours without medication. A negative test is not required to return to school.

As was the case pre-pandemic, students with symptoms of any illness (whether COVID-19 or other illness) should stay home until symptoms have improved and the student is fever-free for 24 hours without medication.

Please reach out to Deanna Poulsen and Christina Stearns in our office, 925-927-3570 if you have any further questions.

Contact Tracing, Case Reporting, and Notifications

Please let your school’s front office, Deanna and Christina, know if your student has tested positive for COVID-19, and follow the protocols outlined above. We are still obligated to report all positive cases to the state, and the more information we have about test positivity in our community, the better equipped we are to make decisions that affect all of us.

The District will continue to maintain a COVID-19 Dashboard on its website, which will identify all positive cases of which we are aware who were on campus within 48 hours of the positive test. We will no longer be sending group tracing notifications when there is a positive case in a classroom. We will, however, advise parents in a particular class if there have been three or more confirmed cases, at which time we will distribute optional at home tests to those who wish to use them.

In accordance with the Cal/OSHA notification mandate, we will continue to notify staff of a positive case on campus within one day of learning of the exposure.

We continue to maintain our COVID-19 email hotline – please email [email protected] with any questions.

Lafayette School District

The Lafayette School District is a kindergarten-eighth grade district with about 3,500 students in four elementary (K-5) schools and one middle (6-8) school. The district offers a full range of services based on the needs of our students, yet the basic instructional day centers around the core subjects: Reading, Language Arts and Mathematics. As a result, the students continually score among the highest of all California students. Most will be college-bound after attending either Acalanes or Campolindo High Schools.

The overall success in the district is attributed to a strong ongoing “Partnership in Education” relationship which exists among students, parents, faculty and community.

Persons who will have children attending one or more of the Lafayette schools should notify the district as soon as possible to help insure that their children’s academic needs will be properly met.

The Acalanes Union High School District

The Acalanes Union High School District is comprised of four comprehensive high schools serving the communities of Lafayette, Orinda, Moraga and Walnut Creek. The two high schools that serve the neighborhoods of Lafayette are Acalanes High school, 1212 Pleasant Hill Rd., Lafayette, and Campolindo High School, 300 Moraga Rd., Moraga. All of the schools of the district rank in the top of high schools in California in terms of academic and extra-curricular offerings. The schools pride themselves on the quality of their educational programs that provide a solid foundation for the students of our communities. This is evidenced by the fact that over ninety percent of our students attend college after graduating.

To keep pace with a growing population and a growing demand for a high-quality educational experience, the schools have engaged in an aggressive building and remodeling campaign and an upgrade in standards for benchmarks in the curriculum. Following successful bond measure elections in recent years, the schools now enjoy new classroom buildings, upgraded buildings, remodeled swimming pools and a new aquatic center, upgraded sports fields, and a new theater and fine arts facilities

The district has also invested heavily in wiring the schools for modern technology and in providing computers and instruction in the application of technology.

The district is in the midst of implementing the California State Standards in the content areas and aggressively addressing the need for comprehensive and positive assessment procedures for data for students, parents, and teachers. Advanced Placement courses have been added on a consistent basis for over the past five years, and the District now offers a complete and wide selection of advanced courses for the needs of our students. The District is aware of the need to offer a broad range of opportunities for our students. Therefore, there are existing and emerging courses and pathways in career-oriented interests, such as automotive technology, CAD drafting and engineering, and other technical areas. The schools also offer a full range of sports teams ands clubs and activities to engage student interests. Over 60% of the student body joins athletic teams.

The schools of the District are superior educational institutions by every measure. A large part of this success is due to the fact that they enjoy superior support from the community-from parents, clubs, boosters, foundations, organizations, and business. The communities value the schools as an integral part of the quality of life we enjoy in the Lafayette area.
