Featured Review: Junior says I love Atlanta Classical Academy! The teachers are amazing and the school really prepares you for college. However, If you decide to send your child to this school, make sure they TRULY understand. ..The downfall of many new students at ACA is that when they enter the school (freshman year for ex.) they tend to expect that the grading system and the rigour of work will be the same as their…One critique I would give the school is that the staff is not diverse. As a POC at ACA, having teachers who look like you and can relate to racial problems that may occur at school is very important…..

Featured Review: Parent says We switched from our zoned school to FAST when it originally opened 6 years ago. The main reason we were interested is because they look at the whole student. You can be on level or behind in one subject and not be penalized and kept out of higher level work in another one. They started doing social-emotional learning long before it was the “it” thing to do.And design thinking prepares you for the real world. The real world isn’t a bunch of standardize tests. It’s critical thinking and finding solutions.I’m so glad for this school, it makes my heart happy. And my children have done very well there..

Book of Secrets read online by Jacqueline West (Page 6)

They would take the banks. They would have prevented Olive from putting the pieces of instructions together. They would say that messing with Aldous’s sorcery was a bad and dangerous business, and that if she did not want to become like Aldous herself, then she should simply put it out of her mind.

    But Olive couldn’t do that.

She couldn’t let paint and paper fall into the wrong hands. And the tunnel was clearly unsafe, even though the cats guarded it day and night.

Besides, if she could figure out how to make magic colors, she could use them for good. Perhaps she could help people trapped in the scenery of Linden Street. How to know? She could undo some of the wrong that Aldous McMartin did. She just needed time to think things through. In the meantime, the cats believe that it is Annabelle, not Olive, took paints and torn papers, Olive’s secret is safe.

Taking one last look at the bed, Olive brushed her hands off the ground, pulled on a clean T-shirt over her dirty one, and hurried down to the cats.

Horatio, Leopold and Harvey gathered behind the shed in the garden, so that they could not be seen from the house. Creeping up to them on tiptoe, the girl heard a quiet but heated argument.

“This is your post,” Horatio inspired someone. “You couldn’t even save a single place in ?”

“With all due respect,” Leopold replied sharply, “a plot of land is a zone of common responsibility. I examined the ditch. It was made a few days ago, maybe a few weeks. And none of us noticed it. Harvey, did you check the backyard when you were on night patrol?

“I’m not sure who this ‘Hagwie’ is,” Harvey said in Sir Lancelot’s voice, “but I’m nonetheless convinced that he looked around the backyard with breathtaking courage.

    “Indeed,” said Leopold. – Then I don’t understand how…

    – This is Annabelle! Horatio cut him off. Olive cowered behind the open barn door, hanging on every word. “Moreover, it’s not the yard, it’s that is under it. Don’t you both understand how much damage she can do with just one. ..

And then Olive’s elbow hit the door, and it made a deafening, rusty creak, just the kind that makes most people want to cover their ears. Olive winced.

Horatio fell silent. A second later, all three pairs of bright green eyes peeked around the corner of the barn: Horatio’s were angry, Leopold’s was alert, and Harvey’s was half-hidden by a coffee can.

    — Olive? said Horatio.

    — Oh! Olive tried her best to look casual. She awkwardly hit the barn door, and it creaked again, heartbreakingly. — So you’re not in barn. I thought you were there. I mean inside. That’s why I… um…

“Come over here so we don’t have to yell,” Horatio snapped.

Olive hurried around the barn and crouched so that she was at the level of the cat’s eyes.

“Miss,” Leopold began, “we must apologize to you. I was, – further words came to him with great difficulty, – an incompetent guardian. The tunnel’s security has been breached and I deserve to be punished.

    – You deserve to be burned on the bone! Harvey hissed, chivalrously tossing the coffee can away. – Decapitate! pissing!

    – Hey! Olive protested, though she couldn’t understand why pike should have been the cat’s punishment instead of its reward. – You have no right to scold him, because half an hour ago I found you sleeping at your post.

“That’s a pgawda,” Harvey admitted more quietly. – But to zagemat does not mean commit treason.

“Annabelle is treacherous,” said Olive, looking down at Leopold, who, in turn, was ruefully examining his paws. She could fool anyone.

Horatio let out a long breath.

“She’s right,” he said at last. “I suppose the only thing left for us to do is to fill in the tunnel and redouble our efforts.

“The price of safety is eternal vigilance,” Leopold muttered to his front paws.

    Olive stroked his head.

“Leopold,” said Horatio, “go back inside and patrol the tunnel.” Harvey and I will work here. Olive…” Olive straightened up, ready to be useful, “and you go wash your face. Your parents will be back soon, and you look like you’ve been lying in a coal pail.

Olive drooped again. She moved obediently to the back door, wondering what a coal pail was. Leopold trailed behind. Behind them, Harvey and Horatio were already crawling along the edge of the garden, studying the fresh entrance to the tunnel.

“We’ll probably see little of each other for a while, miss,” Leopold said without looking Olive in the eye as the back door slammed shut behind them. “I will go underground for a while. But if you ever need me, you know where to find me. And with a weak nod, without his usual military clarity, Leopold dived into the basement and disappeared.

Olive looked after him. Then she stood alone in the kitchen for so long that her legs began to go numb. Olive built a tower out of her thoughts and knew that if she moved, the tower would collapse.

If the passage to the room behind the tunnel and really dug Annabelle (and apparently it was true ), then she almost certainly took a few cans. However, she didn’t take the papers, which gave Olive a spark of hope. Moreover, with or without papers, Annabelle, as far as Olive knew, was not a painter. Artist of Other places was Aldous. What good was paint Annabelle? Olive chewed on a lock of her own hair, thinking. What is the use of paints for her ?

Well, if she doesn’t figure out how to mix them, they won’t be of any use at all. And in order to even begin to figure it out, the girl will have to put together all the scraps of torn papers. And it could take forever, even if she doesn’t go crazy in the process. Once, an annoying great-uncle Dunwoody sent Olive a puzzle for Christmas. The jigsaw puzzle had five thousand pieces, and on each of them other mixed pieces were drawn. Having collected it, you received a picture depicting pieces of a puzzle piled in a heap on the table; the mere thought of assembling something like this made Olive’s brain sizzle and spit like scrambled eggs in a frying pan.

And even even if she managed to connect all the paper scraps correctly, and even if they really turned out to be paint recipes, and even if she was able to could understand how to use them … why she would use them took advantage? What could Olive have drawn that would deserve eternal life?

Olive was still thinking and chewing on her hair when the front door creaked open.

    — Hi, high school student! exclaimed Mr. Dunwoody gleefully, as he and Mrs. Dunwoody set their briefcases on the floor. The words “high school” immediately gave the fragile structure in Olive’s head a palpable kick.

Mrs. Dunwoody hurried down the hallway, kissed Olive on the top of her head, and went into the kitchen to turn on the oven.

    — I’ll go cook dinner and then tell us all about the first day at school.

From the beginning of the meal until the end of the evening, the three Dunwoodys talked about school (especially math class), school habits (and especially how to use rulers, compasses, and graph paper) and the importance of good grades (especially A’s).
